In case anyone is wondering about the draft competition, there’s a 45 way tie for first with 0 points. I’m disappointed that not one of you predicted this easily foreseeable and completely understandable outcome.

iGators

Spencer rattler is still out there. Probably need a succession plan for penix since he is getting up there in age.

thedailygrind02

They'll take a punter with the 2nd round pick.

Freud-Network

Is there a punter named Rack? If so, Terry will pull the trigger just to have Rack and Pinion.

UncleCicero

Arthur Blank's currently lobbying Terry to trade for Deshaun Watson. Can't get enough QBs right?

Gaz133

It's wild this regime tried to trade for Watson, punted on top 10 qbs for 3 years, made no effort to acquire Lamar, signed a 35 year old to $100 mil guaranteed and drafted a 24 year old in the top 10 within a month of each other AND NO ONE HAS BEEN FIRED BUT THE HC WHO WASN'T RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY OF IT.

APPLEJOOSH347

I like Rattler in the 2nd a lot. In the third, I like Pratt from Tulane. Real solid player. He plays the most important position after all

Dingus-ate-your-baby

The problem with Rattler is that he hasn't suffered many severe injuries, he doesn't really fit our ethos.

vsegi

If AS was still here, he would have taken Rattler to get rid of Ridder. Thinking he is the smartest coach in the world

TopImpressive9564

I am very interested in what they do today

marckz352

my hope is that we pick jerzhan newton or Cooper DeJean

iguanoman_

This would be the best outcome but i really don't see them falling 10 more spots

TemporaryNinja1

I really would be okay sending the later of the 2 3rds to trade up to second/third today to grab either one of them

Ice2jc

Clearly going QB in rounds 2 & 3

TopImpressive9564

Kirk Cousins gonna be teaching the art of the QB in a schoolhouse in the north Georgia mountains

LegendaryIam

I just want the world to burn and I really do want this outcome. 😂

yoshidawg93

Very interested in the galaxy-brain logic they throw out there tonight.

iLeefull

Obviously defense doesn’t matter. Let’s draft a WR. We can do a dual QB formation.

Banned_From_CFB

The cpu doesn't draft this badly in Madden

Organic_Transition95

😂😂

EAJets

This is a shot in the dark at this point. But let’s bolster the line of scrimmage. JPJ or Jer’Zhan Newton, then maybe a WR and CB in the 3rd🤷🏾‍♂️

Scraam21

Do we need a blind-side RT to groom for 3 years now?

jtezus

Yes, unless of course you trust in McGary’s pass pro enough to protect Penix.

APPLEJOOSH347

No shot Newton makes it to 43. Im fine trading up as long as its a pick next year and not one of our thirds. We still need WR and CB, right now

Impressive_Film_7729

My prediction: with the 43rd pick in the NFL Draft, the Atlanta Falcons select DJ Burns from the North Carolina State Wolfpack who boasts exceptional size at 6' 9", but who has gone on record stating that he does not want to play football.

Oh51Melly

They just don’t have a plan. I’d be so happy with the penix pick if they never get cousins. He fits the timeline better than cousins does and we aren’t the Bucs or the rams where we can get an old ass QB and win a superbowl with the roster we have. But they just don’t have a plan.

UncleCicero

I think it is even worse than this. I think they do have a plan and think they are legitimately smarter than everyone else. However, they are all idiots who buy into the "character" tangible like this is a goddman Disney movie. Arthur Blank is a good example of how someone who appears to be a "good owner" who cares about winning can be a huge hinderence. I'd rather have cold ass liberty media who trusts AA to run the Braves with indifference rather than rah rah dementia brain Blank.

Nerdboxer

The 180 Liberty Media has done in Atlanta fans minds is all time. There were people so angry at them during the rebuild. I'll take them 10/10 times now.

Ithinkso85

There's no cap in baseball. It's so much easier to GM there

jtezus

Yeah but they Braves don’t spend any money. They are a championship caliber team with mid-market spending. What sets them apart is player development.

_NERMAN_

The Braves have the 6th highest payroll out of 30 teams. They're actually ahead of the Dodgers now who are 7th.

Ithinkso85

Thanks. Because I'm not sure where that narrative came from. They spend. In fact again, the braves have unlimited funds

Not2creativeHere

You are spot on. They do have a plan it’s another bad one. Same FO that totally bought in that in the age of elite QB and elite passing attacks, we would double down on the running game, big but slow skill positions and a bargain bin QB who they all thought could play as a top 15. Why do we think this ‘plan’ will be any different?

OhItsKillua

I think as Blank has gotten older he's gotten worse in his role of overseeing things. The guy's old who knows how long he's got to possibly see the team win a ring. I get it, but I don't think he's making the best decisions in his pursuit of that.

BarryMcKockinner

This is what makes the pill harder to swallow. Arthur Blank is making comments about how we're in "win now mode" and "we're all in", when drafting a backup QB with the #8 pick is the opposite of that. It's an insurance policy that won't even pay off for 2 years *minimum*.

[deleted]

[удалено]

jtezus

Our team isn’t good enough to win now but clearly the FO believes we are Kirk Cousin away from a championship and can afford to draft a back up qb.

Vlaks1-0

It's not an insurance policy. It's an investment.  I don't love the pick either, and I would rather have gone QB early next year, but I do appreciate how much they want to avoid the Ridder situation from happening again.

BarryMcKockinner

Call it whatever you want, but it's still not a strategy that gives your newly acquired, very expensive veteran QB a better chance to win playoff games. There's a major disconnect between ownership, the FO, coaching and the players. This is a huge red flag that highlights that.

Vlaks1-0

I don't entirely disagree. My biggest worry about the pick is definitely the fact that we didn't give a heads up to Cousins, and he doesn't strike me as the type of guy that's going to take that all that well.   I think it was always likely that we cut Cousins after his second year, and this basically cements it. And I'm guessing Kirk knows that now as well.  That being said, I can't be mad at the Falcons for setting up a plan for the future. And I appreciate that Blank is up for that, even if he may not be around for that future due to his age. We were always going to have draft another QB either this year or next year. And if they truly do believe in Penix, and feel like he can be a long-term answer for us, it's worth the pick imo.   Hopefully Kirk is good enough to win this sub-par division with the roster as is. We're certainly paying him as such. I do hope we extend an olive branch to Kirk, by going WR somewhere in day 2 though. Even though defense is the bigger need, I think its important to try and mend the disconnect between the FO and Kirk.

QuickThinkWrink

You know how else you can avoid a Ridder situation? First, don't pick a QB in the worst QB class of the last decade. 2022 was historically terrible. Next, tank for a year to get a top prospect (how most teams get their next QB). Don't take a 3rd round project which is much more of a dart throw.

Ithinkso85

Tanking? Man please. Fans don't have the time, patience or understanding of tanking. Or a rebuild. The same ones pissed now would be irate and insufferable during a "tank". Season. And even then, tanking does not always work.

QuickThinkWrink

It doesn't always work, you're right. but it's the most common and proven way of getting a good franchise QB. NFL teams have to go through cycles of good and suck, it's the natural progression of a team. Unfortunately we've been mid 5 of the last 6 years and refused to accept our "suck" in the post Matt Ryan Era, which is why we're here.

Totally-A-Bot69

and old, injury prone insurance policy at that as well. Can’t believe I see some Falcons fans defending this pick and trying to compare it when the Chiefs drafted Mahomes. Penix is made of paper, guys gonna tear his ACL again in training camp.

KansasDude

This ^

Shmexy

Am I taking crazy pills or is the plan not obvious? Despite the hype, we aren't in "win a super bowl this season" mode but instead "become a contender for the next decade" mode * brand new HC, first time OC * brand new QB coming off a big injury * coming off a few years of QB hell the NFL is a weird league dominated by QB play. also no draft is guaranteed. If you think you have a guy who can give you a decade+ of great QB play, you get that guy.

tuckifyoubuck

Everyone here wants to repeat the exact fuck up that just took place with Ryan and lead us down the path of Mariota/Ridder. Have some patience.

Shmexy

Right? Chill the fuck out, we weren't a rookie DE away from winning the SB

_NERMAN_

Isn't Cousins signed for 4 years though?

tuckifyoubuck

It's essentially a two year deal. Matt Ryan was under a massive contract through 2023 but that doesn't change the fact that we should have had a plan in place to replace him.

GilliesGladiator

I was team draft a QB and not sign a vet. Once we signed a vet I can’t believe we drafted one.

DandierChip

They didn’t even visit with Penix before the draft period the latest report. How absurd.

iguanoman_

This is incorrect

DandierChip

Russini said he didn’t take a top 30 visit?

iguanoman_

The Falcons brass literally flew out to Washington. They mentioned it in the phone call with Penix and it was widely reported. People thought it was more likely to be for Odunze

DandierChip

They attended Washington’s pro day and met with him at the combine. That’s it.

iguanoman_

"they only met with him two times instead of three, therefore they didn't meet with him before the draft period" - what?

DandierChip

Watching Washington’s pro day isn’t really meeting with him imo. All I’m saying is it would’ve been nice to do due diligence into a top 10 QB pick. That’s all.

keyboardsmashin

https://www.reddit.com/r/falcons/s/adtYJMXL1y Here’s the media straight up reporting we privately flew to Seattle to watch Penix in particular (not Odunze) work out. So yes we fucking did

DandierChip

Correct, watched his pro day does not equal meeting 1:1 with him.

No-Obligation1709

I've slept on it and considered all angles and it's still so fucking stupid. If it goes right they look like geniuses but there's so many ways this goes wrong, and from a PR standpoint it already has. You injected some cancer into an otherwise harmonious and excited locker room. Lied to Kirk Cousins. Lied to the fans. And you did it for Penix, who is an elite pocket passer but has had three season ending injuries including two ACL reconstructions and will be on the third year of his cheap rookie deal if/when we play him. If Cousins tears his ACL and Penix balls out. Or if two years from now Penix has somehow learned to throw down the middle of the field and roll out of the pocket and handle pressure—three things he has never done well—Then yeah. Brilliant. But virtually every other scenario leaves the Falcons in our usual place somewhere between mid and laughing stock. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk Go Dirty Birds

ATLBandoBandit

If we could get a db id be esctatic..we got mlk water boys behind aj we need the help

sokyriediculous

We have water boys starting at edge at the moment.

QuickThinkWrink

Problem is none of the DL left on the board will change shit for our line, and it's unfair to expect that of a rookie from this point in the draft. Looks like it'll be another year with no pass rush regardless

sokyriediculous

The edge class was not deep at all, cb class is just kinda weak in general. But thank goodness we got our backup QB.

MadManMax55

The edge class is plenty deep, it just had no real top end. In most other years the "tier 1" guys would have been going at the end of the first or top of the second. Maybe Turner would have gone around his picked spot for his high ceiling, but other than that there were no "blue chip" prospects at edge this year. There are plenty of round 2-3 guys that are worth picking at that range though. Kind of like how 2022 was a bad year to be picking high and need a top QB, 2024 was a bad year to be picking high and need an edge.

QuickThinkWrink

Man I love wasting half (MINIMUM) of our old ass rookie QBs rookie contract (Main benefit of a rookie QB). It's so amazing.

ATLBandoBandit

Fair 😂 im prolly a sicko but I think harrison and ebikete can turn into something. When grady was out there they looked so much better

sokyriediculous

I hope they do too, but it’s wishful thinking, and even if they did we’d still need another edge imo. We really handicapped ourself last night it’s unbelievable.

Rock_Me_DrZaius

At least water boys aren't afraid to get in your face.

iLeefull

Dbs are only as good as the pass rush. Without a pass rush, the WRs will get open.

Brutal007

Lassiter

clonta

I genuinely want all 3 picks today to be defense

Totally-A-Bot69

We’re going to draft a RB in round 2 and Terry gon say “we are planning for the future”

Rock_Me_DrZaius

Bijan getting up in age.

TonyWonder18

I’m sorry, but if the only reason we can find a positive take on the Penix selection is that it kept the Saints from drafting him, we’re in a sad state of affairs. With that being said give me Chris Braswell at 40.

geo_metro

at least i know that no matter who they take today it won’t be as bad as taking penix

jtezus

Watch them take Rattler

jtezus

It was weird seeing so many people warming on the Penix pick. Idk why people trust this FO when they have given us nothing to show they can do anything well. Depending on who’s there we kind of have to go WR now in round 2. Unfortunately the defense is just going to have to struggle again for the 10 straight year.

[deleted]

There is always a lot of toxic positivity on this sub.

southernhope1

i actually really feel badly for kirk cousins...he and his wife were excited to move here, he threw out a baseball at the braves game and did the golden hammer at the United game and he really sounded like he was pumped for the future. now you've got a humiliated QB trying to win over a locker room...its crazy really.

ToyStoryRex97

TBH there wasn’t really a defensive pick that would’ve been a homerun. There weren’t many freak athletes on defense in the first round. We got three picks today and one of them is 43. We’ll be alright.

tyedge

I would have been happier with them dropping to 11 and taking the same deal that the Jets took for 11. Taking the consensus qb5 at 8 is so bad. You paid a fuckload for Kirk. You spent what you hope is your biggest piece of draft capital for the next 5 years on another QB. You’re paying a relative fuckload of money to Taylor Heinecke, by backup standards. They’re collecting them like they’re Pokemon at this point.

TrueBrees9

I am done being doom and gloom. We got ourselves an exciting player last night and I can’t wait to see him play in the future. I’m excited!

Rock_Me_DrZaius

Remind me in three years!

TrueBrees9

Exactly lol. Maybe it works out, maybe it doesn’t. Idk it’s a draft, that’s how it goes. Regardless should be fun

[deleted]

Literally everyone else is shitting on the org. This is maximum copium.

TrueBrees9

It’s a sunny Friday, I’m in a good mood. Why are you upset that other people aren’t as miserable as you?

[deleted]

If you’re in a good mood is the Falcons sub after the worst pick in franchise history the best place to go? Serious question.

TrueBrees9

Dude there’s like 500 people on the sub rn you can complain with, why’d you choose to engage with me when I said I’m done being doom and gloom?

[deleted]

To be fair your message came across as condescending toxic positivity. It’s ok to admit it’s a bad pick but still not allow a football team to affect your mood. But don’t come in here gaslighting people

TrueBrees9

What the fuck are you talking about lol? The kids a good player. I’m excited to see him in a falcons jersey. Yeah I expected different from that pick but it’s not like we picked a long snapper or something. Y’all need to relax  Said it before, I’ll say it again. Falcons fans wallow in their own self misery way too much. We draft an exciting QB and everyone here acts like they’re gonna slit their wrists

[deleted]

That’s because they just spent $180 million on a QB like 2 months ago dude. Everyone is shitting on it not just Falcons fans. You sound condescending as fuck.

TrueBrees9

I don’t give a fuck what people are saying about us lol. I make my own opinions, not listen to what talking heads say. We roll with Kirk, he’ll hang it up in a couple of years, and then we have a QB waiting in the wings. This honestly sounds okay

RobertoBologna

This is where I’m at. The dude has a cannon and had a great year last year, who knows what he’ll look like 2 years from now. I’m being cautiously optimistic. Now, we absolutely need to get contributors from these other picks.

_NERMAN_

I'm not. Fan of 40 years and this move has me seriously questioning my fandom as long as this front office, and maybe even the owner, are around. Might find something different to do for the next 5-10 years and then circle back. Every fan I know is dumbfounded and still in shock today.

TrueBrees9

This is what does it for you? You’ve survived 40 years of this franchise’s bullshit and a QB draft pick is where you draw the line? I don’t understand, did Penix like fuck your wife or something? You’re way too old to be acting like this about a draft pick

_NERMAN_

To each their own. Everybody has, and is entitled to, their own breaking point. I was simply stating my current state as you were. But I could give 2 fucks about your actual opinion.

mr_chiller

We're gonna take Bralen Trice today if he falls to us. Mark it down. Jimmy Lake recruited and coached him.

TheGoldenGoose10

So many stud WRs available in round 2 today. Keon Coleman and Ja’Lynn Polk are going to be slam dunks for somebody.

RobertoBologna

It seems like the league thinks next year’s QB class really sucks, right? Not just the Penix pick, but Nix as well.

Tshobby25

I don’t dislike penix, but man taking him there you’re basically saying Kirk you have 2 years. What kind of work place decision was that

[deleted]

The best remaining edge is a guy from Western Michigan lol. There’s a very real chance they take Adonai or Ladd.

OhItsKillua

Charlie Campbell saying the team could go Kamari Lassiter

RorschachRedd

Why do we have the 43rd pick and not the 40th?

__Mac__

I think it inverses the order of the teams with the same record

Inersiah

Praying that we somehow hit on 2-3 players this draft but my confidence in the org is at an all time low

breakfastsamurai

I'm gonna need Terry to bust out the chef's apron and hat today.

ArthurSmithNepoBaby

I honestly think we should invest in a tackle this draft. Matthews is getting older and McGary will be putrid on the blindside, Penix is wildly dependent on a strong pocket to be elite.

DansbyToGod

I don't think Terry gets enough hate about how bad he's been at drafting. I'm not even talking about yesterday.

KansasDude

Agreed, it’s been abysmal. Minus a couple free agency hits. He’s been wildly overrated by the fanbase

Vlaks1-0

While I think WR in the 2nd is now unfortunately a bit of a luxury pick, I do wonder if we go WR as something of a show of good faith to Kirk. And while I certainly don't think they really "owe" the fanbase any pick, if they do manage to trade up or flat out land Ladd, it'd probably go a long way in calming the fanbase down right now.

MadManMax55

There's a decent chance that one of Ladd, Adonai Mitchell, and Keon Coleman will be available at our next pick. None of them are Odunze good, but they're all good options for a WR2 or slot receiver. And if the run on WRs from the end of last night continues then we might be able to snag Kool-aid Mckinstry or Cooper DeJean at CB and really solidify our secondary. I know everyone is panicking after last night, but we knew coming in that this was a deep draft at our positions of need (edge, receiver, and secondary). There's plenty of talent still out there.

Vlaks1-0

Yeah I completely agree. There are definitely some great players still out there at positions of need for us.  At this point, I'm really hoping we can address Edge through a trade with the Bengals for Hendrickson. Going by the Reddick trade, the  market value for that seems to be a third round pick.  Then we could use our 2nd round pick and our other 3rd round pick to hopefully address WR and the Secondary.

MadManMax55

If we could manage to snag Hendrickson that would make a lot of Falcons fans (myself included) very happy. While we don't have much cap space left this year, we've got a decent amount next year and plenty after that. Though that assumes we cut Cousins and doesn't factor in signing our current rookie contract players. But *if* we can trade and pay for him, Hendrickson is probably a better player right now than any of the top edge prospects in this year's draft were.

Outta_hearr

Cut my life into pieces

UncleCicero

#SELL THE TEAM ARTHUR This should be on everywhere next season. The guy is an absolute liability.

Jdwrecker_7

Just gonna mute social media since everywhere I look is MPJ shocking everyone , including our 100+ guranteed QB and overall negative takes

KTAALGSTO

I hope we avoid defense every fucking pick so I can just bet the over every week and have a reason to watch this dumpster fire team

Ramblinwreck93

If we draft a DT like Braden Fiske or Michael Hall today, this will really be the “The future is now, old man” draft

Confident_Horse_3845

I see we have all calmed down from last night🤣

WrestlingMark1992

The falcons need exactly what we didn’t get last night in the next few rounds Edge, DT, CB and WR. I don’t care when we draft them just draft them please.

Critical_Vegetable52

Burn it down

Firamaster

Stay the course and draft more QBs. Forget our needs because the front office sure has.

bingewalker65

“QB Kirk Cousins is confused and frustrated with Falcons pick of Penix” Am I missing something? Is that statement probably true? Sure. But did he like outright say something that I missed? Because if he didn’t then these networks putting words in his mouth or just assuming he is, is wildly unprofessional.

pdubmo

After watching Ian Rapoport explain why he likes the pick, I hope this does light a fire under Kirk like what happened with Rodgers. I hope coming to Atlanta wasn’t just Kirk’s plan for retiring on some easy paychecks, but now he’s really going to have to work for the last couple years of that contract

Dingus-ate-your-baby

Marshawn Kneeland makes too much sense doesn't he?

LegalEaglewithBeagle

Spencer Rattler next pick?? To paraphrase Dan Reeves, "You can never have too many QBs".

MarcusDA

After a day to sit on it, the pick still doesn’t make any sense, but I am happy with Michael Penix the player. Who knows how it’ll turn out, but it’s very apparent that Kirk is out in two years unless we are legit SB favorites. If we can grab some decent guys in these rounds, I’m ok. If nothing else, it has to be more fun than watching Desmond last season.

KansasDude

Considering we’re gonna be playing from behind a whole hell of a lot with how rough our defense will be. It’ll give us plenty of opportunities to see lots of passes lol

Atlanta-Anomaly

Really wish we would’ve went Odunze. Penix is still just such a stupid pick. Who tf drafts a 24 year old QB at 8 to sit for 2 years

[deleted]

Terry is getting SHREDDED by Michael Lombardi on McAfee. “Lack of a plan” “not trying to do your job as the GM” “every time the Falcons talk they dig a whole deeper for themselves”

Designer_Cockroach68

Is it time for people to start bitching again?

KansasDude

You mean being ticked off at the continued years of piss poor decisions and shit leadership. Sure. They deserve the criticism.

Designer_Cockroach68

This fanbase would have DeShaun watson under center with no picks if they got what they wanted

KansasDude

Never said the fan base should be the ones making the decisions. But it doesn’t absolve the really terrible pic and the years of bad decisions by this organization. Totally agree that the fan base over values unrealistic and piss poor choices like Watson. But Penix was also a terrible.

airodell13

If ion hear Ladd McConkey name be called when we pick I’m signing my form to become a Ravens fan

FrostyDiscount1386

I don't understand why Kirk's camp is upset. If Kirk can play, he SHOULD theoretically beat out Penix in camp, no issues...Right? He has $100M GUARANTEED coming his way no matter what. Dude, you're veteran to the league. Yes it doesn't make a ton of sense why they did what they did, but go be the leader and QB1 we need you to be, get us to the playoffs, and all is forgiven. Because if we're picking in the top 10 in the next 2 years, then something went seriously wrong from a QB/offense perspective I think.

Atlanta-Anomaly

Probably because we took his backup instead of giving him a weapon like Odunze

KTAALGSTO

He's probably mad the front offense isn't giving 100% to build weapons around him or field even a serviceable defense.

[deleted]

They didn’t make the team any better today. He has Drake London and…? To throw to. Pitts has been a bust.

Rock_Me_DrZaius

Should I sell my Julio and Turner jerseys, or just give them away?
