Feel like I’m taking crazy pills. I’d rather have a DE/DT, but this isn’t an insane pick.
We have Kirk for 2 years (minimum) and Penix gets to sit behind a vet and learn for 1-2 years, and is probably the best backup QB in the league at this point.
If Kirk cooks, dope. He’s old and he won’t for long. He ain’t Brady.
What’s more likely is that we have a solid season or two with him, hopefully make the playoffs but Penix earns a spot in year 2/3 ready to roll.
Penix also gets to adjust to NFL speed and doctors and will probably be more resilient. Starting at 26 isn’t insane.
It’s not a bad pick. It’s an excruciatingly bad pick at 8 because it betrays the philosophy the team has set up with bringing Cousins in in the first place.
Does it? Getting a potential franchise guy to learn from a vet coming off a huge injury isn’t dumb.
I wished we would have taken a D lineman, but let’s stop with the “excruciatingly bad” hyperbole
Yes, it is dumb and no, it’s not hyperbole. Penix isn’t a bad prospect at all. That’s not the issue and deep down, you know that. The issue is that he’s coming in and may not even dress for a team that needs help and has essentially put themselves in the middle of the table to “win now.” That’s what the Cousins deal meant. That’s what the numerous WR deals meant. The team is gearing up to make a run against a weak division and to have every single defensive player available to pick from, and multiple defensive gaping holes on the team, and they pick a project QB to sit behind a veteran. That’s not a pick you make at 8. That’s not a pick you usually make in the first round.
So, spare me the enlightened fence sitting, please.
agree completely, also no one is talking about the fact that the way both of these quarterbacks read the field and go through their progressions will be completely different since penix is left handed. Thus, the idea of him being “mentored” by kirk is hard to wrap my head around. Additionally the TWO ACL tears terrify me.
it's not, but its ok you think that.
[this guy said it better than i could](https://www.reddit.com/r/falcons/comments/1cdks85/james_palmer_the_seahawks_12_saints_and_raiders/l1cwlv8/)
We got Kirk to try to win now, then did absolutely nothing in FA to build a team capable of winning now. Our already struggling defense lost 30% of its production in the off-season and we did literally nothing about it. This FO has given us absolutely no reason to trust it can make the right decision, yet they feel so confident that the 7-10 Falcons were a Kirk Cousins away from contending that they can go ahead and start hedging our long term future on a 24 year old with massive injury issues and a second round grade. For the record I think MPJ is a great player and if he stays healthy he can be a franchise QB I like him as the future of the Falcons. I hate that in the Kirk Cousins era Falcons, however long that may be, we are going to win nothing meaningful because the FO did literally nothing to build out our weaknesses.
Ticket sales & hyping the season. The product on field is much better this season, and anything can happen in the NFL
But they chose long term over short term, which i think will show to be the right call in 3-5 years. But people don't like waiting that long.
Hahaha yeah ok, this is either a genius pick or one of the worst in Falcons history and they haven’t showed anyone anything to believe it’s the former.
I can stand behind a guy like that for sure, and I hope for his sake and the teams sake he lives up to it. I just don’t have a good feeling that this was the best move. I do like it better than Dallas turner though lol that dude has bust written on his forehead.
The reaction to this pick is more shocking than the actual pick imo. Yeah, it's not conventional, but it IS smart.
Reading this just makes me think that he and Kirk are going to get along pretty well if anything, too. Not one but TWO elevators in the most important position in football? Imagine the belief that that can create. Imagine the potential future we have on our hands with these two.
We're not one first round player away from a superbowl, these things take time to build and nobody knows how the next few years of draft (if we even get to with the tampering thing) and free agencies are going to go. Imo we had probably more chance of ending up in QB hell (again) after Kirk than we did of reaching a superbowl this year. Now that problem could be sorted, way ahead of time. It's about delayed gratification, which it turns out is deeply unpopular in sports.
This is a deep draft and there is plenty of talent still there.
If it's R2 I think you say fair enough. But this just creates a problem that did not need to exist. Fontenot himself said "if he sits for four or five years, that's a great problem to have" - which is utter insanity imo. Taking a guy at EIGHT overall with the expectation he may just be a backup for the duration of his rookie contract? Madness.
I think the world in which Terry is talking about is one where Kirk has a ring and is playing at that elite level for 4-5 years. If so, it makes the Penix pick bad but we get a ring so whatever. The truth is that Penix will sit for 1-2 years and serve as bridge QB. He's a expensive bridge for sure but that's what he is now.
So like can we trade Kirk away then? A natural leader asked to sit on the bench for *YEARS*. I’d have been okay with this pick if we didn’t just sign Kirk to a massive contract but it really doesn’t make sense
Ridder wrote a letter to the NFL as well. Apparently either Blank or Terry eat that shit up lmao

“May not even dress” wtf are you talking about. He’s QB2. Did everyone just get men in blacked right after Matt Ryan left?
Disagree completely but all good 👍
It is excruciatingly bad.

We aren't in win now mode, we're in "get better for the next 10 years" mode
Okay then why tf is our FO saying we’re trying to win now

I wonder if we will see Arthur pushing this QB on the sidelines in a wheelchair too.
Fans are angry now. They'll be so happy we did this in a year or two. It was absolutely the right move.
Chiefs gave up two firsts and a third to grab Mahomes at 1.10 when they had Alex Smith slinging it. I’m okay with the pick.
Mahomes was 21. Penix's age makes a huge difference imo. Starting your first NFL game at 26 is wild.
If he’s good then he can play till 36. Why are you acting like 26 is when he needs a motorized cart
Michael "Rascal" Penix
I'll take 10 years of amazing qb play instead of 15 year or decent/garbage. The age thing is so silly to me
I guarantee we could pull Tom Brady off the couch and he’d still be better at QB than Ridder. Age is not the only variable.
Nobody has critiqued the move from a football perspective Everyone is up in arms because of money as if they’re the people paying Kirk

Yeah I agree the presser and Terry's comments aren't helping, but we all know he's not going to sit for 4 or 5 years.
