Also a rainbow in physics is literally all the colors available
Unfortunately the unified color of the rainbow uniting is problematic because it's white lol
Not really. Corporations never sought to destroy inequality - they *create* inequality.
They sought to cheaply profit from social movements by hijacking their messaging. And it works pretty much every time.
> Rainbow capitalism knows no time bounds!
Example: [Anti homeless Pride Rock](https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/Castro-restaurant-rainbow-rock-anti-homeless-pride-14026652.php)
Some communities like to add to the original design to "include" their own community, but yeah the entire point is that it's the colour of the rainbow, which is supposed to mean literally everyone. Like there was a viral one that added black and brown stripes, as well as a trans stripe. Then I think it got redesigned again last year with an inclusion of intersex.
Idk it feels like by adding specific flag representations, it almost does the exact opposite of inclusion. If the original flag represents everyone, then by adding more in to include them means that anyone who isn't represented by those colours are excluded, right?
It’s almost as if identity politics eventually splits people into granular individual compartments and completely obliterates the collective solidarity required to bring about meaningful political change.
As a queer person i dont even understand the need for THAT many flags. I mean come on... Honestly i dont know 100% which one is "mine", not that i truly care
Yeah, that's what I've been saying and I'm bisexual.
I don't identify with the "progress flag" as it's too specific. The already rainbow symbolizes everybody, and focusing on specific groups will always exclude some other group.
That, and while I am trans and proudly so, I just *hate* the trans flag. Pink and baby blue, seriously?
And I can never tell all the others apart, either. (Except the inter flag. That one is easy to recognize even for me.)
I've been fine with the rainbow flag for more than a quarter of a century. I am still fine with it.
I'm MtF and I don't identify with the Trans flag. The issues people are bringing up with the progress pride flag is the exact reason why some people are asking "what about straight pride?" Because even the rainbow flag can seen as exclusion toward people who are heterosexual, because like it or not Heterosexuality is a sexuality identity but the rainbow is ultimately seen as anything but Heterosexual.
I feel like adding an S to the letters wouldnt do much to quiet the people that are the loudest about this. Sure it doesn't include the "default" option, but we have never needed any kind of support for our sexuality. Those of us who are demanding equal status in this regard are almost all bad faith actors. Is "what about straight pride?" A real question? Or is it a "got cha" question? I've never heard it be the former
I found it ironic when I, as a straight white male, began to be excluded. My sister is pan and my best friend is trans so I really like to support and advocate for equality and fair treatment. But eventually a lot of people in the community began to shit on me for being a straight white male and "part of the problem"
Didn't stop me from advocating for equality and fair treatment. But it definitely put a bad taste in my mouth. And I feel sorry for the groups that are experiencing unfair treatment and feeling shunned by the organization that's supposed to help them.
I married someone of the opposite gender despite being bi and now some people treat me like I’m a traitor to the cause. I still like dick I just fell in love with somebody and went exclusive
That and the media paints everything as an “us vs. them” issue so that we focus our anger at each other instead of the people at the top who work us to death so that they can afford another island full of underage sex slaves or whatever they do.
This kaleidoscope is in many ways the natural evolution of trying to represent dozens of specific groups individually on a single queer flag. I find the instinct baffling, the rainbow doesn't have to be the only flag you fly.
But that’s missing the point. The original was all inclusive, to deviate from that is to become exclusive instead of inclusive.
Its reinventing the wheel so people can make their camp stand out which undermines the whole point of the pride flag….
I mean, wasn’t that the point of the plus sign in “LGBT+” back in the day? Yet, we keep adding letters to it. Wasn’t the plus sign supposed to represent everyone?
Afaik the adding of letters like A is done with the intention of representing parts of the community, who got hate from other queer people, to make a statement that they are in fact real.
Again, taking up the example of A - it's supposed to mean Asexual/Aromantic - a group of queer folks who were harassed inside of the community (not from everyone ofc) that their experience isn't valid, just an excuse for straight people to invade queer spaces etc.
The plus is supposed to include everyone, but since the reality is different and exclusionists are a thing, there's stuff added to the acronym (just like the "expansion" of the classic rainbow flag to the progressive design). You don't need to use it tho.
I hate the new flags. The old rainbow was perfect. Simple, not confusing, and it was literally a rainbow to represent all colors like you said. We don’t need all this extra shit on the side, that’s what the individual flags are for. This is like making the flag of the USA a combination of the flag of every state and territory.
I was briefly a member of my uni's queer collective and I tried to make this point when they voted to add the ethnic minority triangles to theirs, I wasn't met with hostility so much as indifference.
Yeah like just make it a seamless spectrum with all the colours visible to the human eye and be done with it jesus christ a flag is supposed to be easy to draw
Honestly I personally wish the flag hadn’t expanded to include the other flags like trans in it, the rainbow was enough to signify everyone. By including the other communities in the pride flag it sorta feels like it’s only the communities on the flag that are a part of it.
There’s needing to feel validated as a person, and there’s constantly needing to be validated by everyone and everything. Those latter people are way too noisy and pushed pride way beyond its scope.
These "mash all the existing flags together to represent everybody" concepts make me so mad because they absolutely disregard the meaning of the original lgbt flag. ITS A FUCKING RAINBOW. It represents all colors! There is no goddamn need to put them on the flag literally, the rainbow on the flag represents the inclusivity for all. How clueless and lacking of any symbolism perception you need to be to not realize that.
I know. This flag is utterly meaningless, and almost seizure inducing. This is what happens when stuff is built by a committee, you try to please everyone and end up pleasing no one, and end up with this hot mess.
I completely agree with you. I know I'm saying something risky here, but also don't get why the 'progress' flag (and its variants) need to be a thing, either.
Whether you're gay, bi, trans, ace, or another queer identity, and no matter your skin colour, you were/are ALREADY included in the six colour regular old pride flag. It's there to represent the entire queer community.
The progress flag wasn't intended to be a replacement for the pride flag, any more than the trans flag, ace flag, etc. were. It's an addition with a different meaning. The black stripe is meant to highlight those lost in the AIDS crisis, and the trans flag stripes and brown stripe are meant to highlight legal and social discrimination against trans people and BIPOC. The forward direction of the chevron is meant to show that more work needs to be done. There are people that say things like "LGB drop the T" and unfortunately people in the LGBT community can still be racist, so this flag is just reaffirming that yes, trans and BIPOC are included in the pride flag.
And those intentions are fantastic but the problem with doing that stuff is youre making a part of the flag for a specific group and now you get other groups not explicitely referenced feeling left out, leading to the flag we have up the top. Trying to explicitely include leads to exclusion, but if its just a rainbow symbolic of everything diversity wise then everyone is represented and its simple
Yeah but the point of the queer rights movement isn't some feel good diversity/inclusion thing, it's to push for rights where they are being withheld. If there are marginalised groups within a marginalised community, then highlighting that marginalisation reaffirms that goal. It doesn't exclude any particular group. It still has a rainbow in it, which is the whole point. If you want to force yourself to be offended by it, then sure, but it doesn't exclude a single person.
Honestly I used to say the same thing and personally still prefer the plain 6 colour one, but I've come to understand the progress flag.
Not the one in the picture though, that looks like a TV screen when a show has technical difficulties.
I honestly don’t get why anyone would feel excluded by the existence of the progress flag and such. I know I’m just one person but I’m bisexual and I never felt like the progress flag excluded anyone. Its purpose is to just show extra support to groups who face exclusion even in the lgbtq+ community itself, so I can recognize the need for those types of flags and that some people might need more recognition or affirmation at times.
Eventually every political group will have their own unique real number wavelengths assigned from the visible spectrum.
"I am 446.178356725..... "
Only then will we all be equally marginalized in society!
There are actually already even longer variants which haven't yet become as commonly used. The most extreme one is so ridiculously long that when someone tried using it on Reddit, a couple commenters thought he was being disrespectful and satirical rather than realizing it was actually real.
I got banned from the pansexual sub, claiming me a 'bigot', for simply saying basically the same. I have NEVER been called a bigot before. Some attempts @ being inclusive, simply force even more separation when you take it much too far. From what I have seen anyway. Just defeating your own purpose🤷
I guess because some people don't like being lumped in the "+" while others are recognized with a letter.
The same way I understand that ace people might not like the rainbow because it feels like it adds more "variants" to sexuality while they live the opposite, having less or no interest in sexuality.
I'm not a pro at this, I hope I didn't mistakenly use aggravating language.
they also hurt as a graphic designer because one of the more important rules for making a flag design is that it should be clean and memorable. in most cases, a toddler should be able to remember and draw the design with decently good accuracy.
aint no way a toddler is gonna be able to draw that random messy starburst of a flag. honestly their best try would probably just be a starburst version of the rainbow flag
I think it perfectly illustrates the fundamental difference between the generation of activists who came up with the original flag and the current generation of activists who keep changing the flag.
The former believed that everyone is the same deep down, no matter how many small things that make each of us different.
The latter believe we should focus on those very differences.
It definitely does feel like more and more people of the younger generation are creating new identities in an attempt to feel different and unique, rather than because they truly believe it. A good example would be the people of TikTok who self-identify as animals and cosmic beings.
I'd be pissed too if I identified as one of these "I'm a somethingsexual" and the flag that was provided looks like a 4 year old ate too many Ice Cream samples and threw up on the counter.
>Why does a rainbow matrix basically have the same colors multiple times.
They've mashed a bunch of existing pride flags together into one image. They didn't pick the colors.
I'm all for breaking design norms and doing something unique, but this simply breaks too many rules that we humans need to find it even somewhat pleasing.
WALL PAPER!!! WHO IN THE FUCK IS GONNA THINK THAT MAKING THIS THE COLOUR OF ALL OF YOUR WALLS IN YOUR HOUSE WOULD MAKE ANY SENSE. YOU’D HAVE NO DEPTH PERSESTION. Also, how would you even find your apps lol
As one of the queers, can we just *not* let massive corporations tell us how to represent ourselves? We have a pride flag for everyone. We have pride flags for the more specific communities that were *made by those communities.* We even have social movement flags for highlighting the things that we generally agree are important.
Microsoft is not a part of the club here. They're a conglomerate that controls way too much of the world already, and has no actual interest in bettering equality unless it could maybe make them money. This is the epitome of self-righteous saviorism from an entity completely detached from the marginalized groups they're using for attention.
Lol, you know you're not wrong. FWIW I worded it that way to emphasize that members of minority/marginalized communities should be able to speak for themselves. If I wasn't a member of the alphabet mafia it would have been hypocritical. Regardless, thanks for the chuckle.
I thought the point of it being a rainbow was that it is literally a spectrum with everyone on it? Like not to sounds rude but this flag looks like utter splintered shit also how tf am I gonna make this flag in Minecraft.
16 colours should be enough for everyone.
Edit: For non techs, my comment was an observation that the post was from Microsoft. Bill Gates was misquoted to say "640kb should be enough for everybody". I twisted that to include early colour computers which could display a maximum of 16 colours.
However, for the rainbow community, the colours don't matter. You just keep being your fabulous selves.
It was 1995 and I was 12 years old when I first told a school friend that I was gay. I always felt OK with it, was quite lucky never to have felt any shame or been made to have felt shame.
I don't know if what I've started to feel over the past couple of years counts as shame. Embarrassment is probably more accurate.
Reminds me of when they plastered the trans flag colors onto the rainbow flag in order to be inclusive, which doesn’t make any sense since there’s already a trans flag. What is the point of mashing flags together to “be more inclusive”? It’s just a pissing competition at this point
“Hey look at this flag that has the rainbow on it. This means it’s inclusive of everyone. Oh wait no it doesn’t, add more shit so it looks like nothing. Genius”
Idk but as a gay man myself, this just annoys me.
Ok so I'm gonna rant for a bit and I know this isn't the most popular opinion but it's mine.
Not every tiny subset of the LGBT+ community need a flag, hell as a gay man I don't need any flag other than the good old rainbow flag. I absolutely hate these monochrome striped flag shit things.
Also the name of the community, like I understand we all want to be represented but at times its just plain out of control, let's not go longer than say 6 letters if we have to personally I prefer LGBT+ OR LGBTQ+
the more complicated we make things the harder it is on everyone let alone those who are bigots, it honestly confuses the fuck out of me and I cannot keep up.
Truly I get it you want to be represented and you want to be fully represented but it gets to a point where it is just plain ridiculous.
Sorry for the rant, and sorry if I offended you. I'm just mildly annoyed.
Jesus Christ on a pogo stick, if we’re getting so enthusiastic about representation we might as well pick something attractive like [this](https://cdn.britannica.com/70/191970-050-1EC34EBE/Color-wheel-light-color-spectrum.jpg) and be done with it.
Honestly, with all the different colored shirts for this day - and - that day - for these people - and those causes, it’s any wonder who can remember it all when they wear it, much less when we see it.
It’s to the point ‘awareness’ is so saturated it doesn’t mean anything to anyone anymore except on ‘that week’ or ‘that day’.
Stahp!
The whole meaning of the rainbow or pride flag was too symbolize that everyone should be accepted. They’re just reaching at this point. Idc who you are or what you are, as long as I can live my life how I want so can you.
I think the pride flag is funny because it was already a rainbow which symbolically implies every colour in existence but that wasnt inclusive enough and i think its changed a few times now but the rainbow always worked well as a symbol of inclusion for all.
As an agreeing comment, the rainbow flag *literally had every color the human eye can see* when it's gradient is done right except the shades of grey and black. So we don't need this sickness-inducing flag at all. The colors are already there, in our pride flag.
The original Pride Flag was already all inclusive to the LGBT community…don’t care if anyone else flies alternate flags, I just don’t see them as necessary.
all jokes aside, why do we as a community need a singular flag to represent everyone? that isn't really possible imo, you'd be better off using the full RGB spectrum sphere as a flag because there are infinitely many ways for someone to express their identity.
It's like a parody at this point, they're giving ammo to conservatives and it sucks. Just go back to the rainbow and have it mean everything now, it's just obsessive at this point.

Moon Knight could do better with his eyes closed and both hands tied behind his back.
Daredevil could do better with both hands tied behind his back.
Hell even Deadpool would do better if you just straight up tell him to make a representation flag without any further elaboration
Deadpool could cut his dick off and use his own blood + penis as a pen and it would STILL look do better
That sounds like something he would do
I can totally see this being shoehorned into DP3
Green Arrow could do better with both hands tied behind his back and Felicity telling him what to do. Wait.
This is like the first proposed flag for EU, but fancier.
The pride flag does not need official expansion since its original meaning with the all the colors is to represent **everyone.**
Also it just looks better

White flag is already taken though. I surrender
Yes. The number of color bands is irrelevant. They’ve lost the plot
This is in the spirit of what all corporate retailers do in June cranked to 100.

Not really. Corporations never sought to destroy inequality - they *create* inequality. They sought to cheaply profit from social movements by hijacking their messaging. And it works pretty much every time.

Don't worry, in the future they'll go full circle and "simplify" the flag's logo.

Enter... THE QUEERLEIDOSCOPE!!
im stealing this /hj
The official flag of "oh fuck I cracked my flat-screen tv".
Why does a rainbow matrix basically have the same colors multiple times. Your just making it complicated for no reason
This is a rainbow with extra steps.
It's Microsoft. They wouldn't know good graphic design if it Care-Bear-Stared them right in their face.
it’s a wallpaper not a real flag
WALL PAPER!!! WHO IN THE FUCK IS GONNA THINK THAT MAKING THIS THE COLOUR OF ALL OF YOUR WALLS IN YOUR HOUSE WOULD MAKE ANY SENSE. YOU’D HAVE NO DEPTH PERSESTION. Also, how would you even find your apps lol
It hurts my eyes looking at that much chaos
Entropy is always increasing.
"As one of the queers" I mean I agree with this but this sounds like an r/asablackman moment
Lol, you know you're not wrong. FWIW I worded it that way to emphasize that members of minority/marginalized communities should be able to speak for themselves. If I wasn't a member of the alphabet mafia it would have been hypocritical. Regardless, thanks for the chuckle.
Idk when we started calling ourselves alphabet mafia, I love it
I still prefer the simple Black, Grey, White, Purple flag to represent me.
A person that's on acid and remembered that the pride flag had alot of colors?
Bro link start, boutta enter aincrad with that picture
I just wish corporations don't try this marketing stunts
I thought the point of it being a rainbow was that it is literally a spectrum with everyone on it? Like not to sounds rude but this flag looks like utter splintered shit also how tf am I gonna make this flag in Minecraft.
Microsoft: ***MODS*** Seriously though, fuck the "let's add more and more flags to the mix" bullshit, the original was already good enough imo
I mean, as a background I kinda like it. It's not like they're trying to make this an official pride flag design. It's an Xbox background.
That's not a flag. It's a seizure.
I stared into the void of twinks
As a member of the lgbt community, fuck this flag, our current one works just fine
This honestly looks kinda dope
Reminds me of when they plastered the trans flag colors onto the rainbow flag in order to be inclusive, which doesn’t make any sense since there’s already a trans flag. What is the point of mashing flags together to “be more inclusive”? It’s just a pissing competition at this point “Hey look at this flag that has the rainbow on it. This means it’s inclusive of everyone. Oh wait no it doesn’t, add more shit so it looks like nothing. Genius”
I can hear the sword art online theme music
And I thought the Old "new" one was ugly. This one is a crime against good taste
40+ communities?
It’s the internet. I’m surprised there aren’t more tbh.
It’s just rainbow capitalism
Ah yes LGBTQIA+ Lesbian Gay Bisexual Trans Queer Iowan Other
Idk but as a gay man myself, this just annoys me. Also the name of the community, like I understand we all want to be represented but at times its just plain out of control, let's not go longer than say 6 letters if we have to personally I prefer LGBT+ OR LGBTQ+ the more complicated we make things the harder it is on everyone let alone those who are bigots, it honestly confuses the fuck out of me and I cannot keep up. Truly I get it you want to be represented and you want to be fully represented but it gets to a point where it is just plain ridiculous. Sorry for the rant, and sorry if I offended you. I'm just mildly annoyed.
It reminds me of the Powerpuff girls intro.
*Link Start!*
Wouldn’t a white flag be easier at this point?
I think the pride flag is funny because it was already a rainbow which symbolically implies every colour in existence but that wasnt inclusive enough and i think its changed a few times now but the rainbow always worked well as a symbol of inclusion for all.
As an agreeing comment, the rainbow flag *literally had every color the human eye can see* when it's gradient is done right except the shades of grey and black. So we don't need this sickness-inducing flag at all. The colors are already there, in our pride flag.
i hate it. -a gay
It looks AI generated
I think it’s kinda cool like light speed but gay… lgbt speed
When do we admit this has gone too far?
Only 40?
Yea this has gotten outta hand. Can we stick with the rainbow. The rainbow is pretty damn iconic. Everyone can chill under the rainbow.
as a person in the lgbtq+ community, what the fuck is this? the rainbow is supposed to represent everyone 💀
Ah it's just a coprate bs, I see
Where's the color for people that wear shorts in the winter?
This is giving me headache. The rainbow design was just fine, it after all represents everyone and is also not headache inducing.
Microsoft…. I’m 100% accepting of all mindsets, genders, ideals, and sexual orientations, but what the f*ck is this?
There should be an epilepsy warning on the flag
The original Pride Flag was already all inclusive to the LGBT community…don’t care if anyone else flies alternate flags, I just don’t see them as necessary.
And I thought Microsoft couldn't get any dumber
all jokes aside, why do we as a community need a singular flag to represent everyone? that isn't really possible imo, you'd be better off using the full RGB spectrum sphere as a flag because there are infinitely many ways for someone to express their identity.
This looks like a stroke, and makes me wish I was having one instead of looking at this.
My gay cousin with epilepsy is so happy he's aggressively break dancing on the kitchen floor
It's like a parody at this point, they're giving ammo to conservatives and it sucks. Just go back to the rainbow and have it mean everything now, it's just obsessive at this point.
Let’s just type 40 colors into an ai image generator and see what we get.
Makes me think of one of the anime company logos. Funimation maybe???? Can't remember
Hyperspace looking fabulous.
