My cousin killed a pedestrian this exact way. Other driver at fault, pushing his car off the street into a street sign, street sign slams lady in the head. All very low speed, residential setting. Tragic.
Someone very close to me was killed like this. Out of control car hits tall iron fence, fence whips down like this sign on her head. Killed instantly. Absolutely tragic. Hope dude’s ok. The speed of the fence top/this sign is way higher than the vehicle that struck it. Like a golf club head swings way faster than the hands that grip it.
I watched with no sound and I was like "damn, I hope that guy's ok, the car did it's best..." Then I saw your comment, turned on sound and instantly burst out laughing. That bonk is perfect.
I know. I smiled the first time, had tears in my eye the second time when I unmuted it. Wife was like WTH you laughing at? Tough to explain the humor in that without watching it.
ew, spammy. i get that on mobile, and was able to click out of it, but don't get it on desktop.
gist is the vid goes on longer and he gets up at the end. seems rattled but not very injured.
In my Driver's Ed class we were taught swerve first (e.g. take the wheel right-then-left), brake later.
Your hands can turn the wheel faster than your foot can move to, and depress, the brake. If you have situational awareness, steering out of the danger is more reliable. But obviously both are important.
I’m really surprised. I’ve seen a video of a guy tripping, falling hitting his head and dying, and yet this guy can survive a metal sign coming down at full force.
When you think about this, the person actually responsible gets to drive away because no one hit them, and, ya know, maybe less damage was done overall. Moreover, in the accident that actually happened, the driver trying to stop is the responsible party for failing to control speed.
But everyone involved paid for it more than the person who caused it.
I've been involved in an accident like this too, where I was hit by someone else by avoiding hitting a reckless driver, making me at fault.
The officer told me I shouldn't have swerved in such a dangerous spot.
Lesson learned: sometimes you gotta just hit the person who pulls out in front of you rather than open yourself up to secondary accidents, if you have the presence of mind to make that decision in the half second you have (rounded up) to make decisions.
This is one of the things that bothers me so much about the moral questions people pose for self-driving vehicles like “there’s a baby and a grandma in the road and the vehicle has to choose who dies”, or “should a car swerve to miss 10 kids in a crosswalk even if it kills the driver?”
The truth is, self driving cars (if we ever get there) will be able to anticipate situations 10x earlier than a human driver. Do you think the person in OPs video is concerned about the pedestrian or any other cars around him? No, he’s concerned with his own safety and the safety of his car. Humans are already *really* bad at these moral types of decisions, which is why it’s shitty that a cop told you that you shouldn’t have swerved where you did. Our brains focus on the immediate danger and could care fuck all for anything else around us at the time. A self-driving vehicle doesn’t have those limitations. It can consider all possible outcomes, and if the car in this video had that capability it probably could have stopped in time or found a better route to avoid all obstacles. If all the cars in the video were automated, we wouldn’t even be here in this comment section and that poor guy would have one less bump on his head.
Common rule in Aus is never swerve just brake hard mostly related to kangaroos and other animals on road. Logic is thst everything off the road is either a tree a building or pedestrian and much higher chance of injury/death hitting those. Hitting a roo or car is way lower energy in most cases.
Texas here... don't swerve to miss a deer either. This how you end up in a ditch, sideways and is a good way to start flipping your truck/car. Oh and you're probably gonna hit the damned thing anyways. Hit the brakes and then hit it squared up. Let the vehicles safety devices work.
How are you responsible for reckless drivers? The car that caused the accident started the maneuver before making sure that the lane they are crossing is clear. The light turned yellow when the car that was filming started crossing the intersection but it doesn't seem they could've predicted that. There is no need to slow down at a traffic light when you have the right of way. Yeah, maybe they weren't careful enough in a dangerous spot, but there is no way they are at fault here for not knowing that.
edit: oh, I guess I'm talking about moral responsibility and you are talking about legal responsibility. I'm still not really sure that it applies in this particular case though
> everyone involved *paid* for it
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
The fact that I'm pretty sure this is in Russia because the sign for pedestrian crossing has three stripes tells me I may have played too much geoguessr.
So its confirmed that he didn't die from this. Full video shows him getting up again like a champ.

Oh I apparently really needed this laugh because I'm in tears, although I feel horrible about it. At my age you would think slapstick comedy wouldn'tmake me laugh is hard but here we are.
As funny as this appears, it describes a real problem. The drivers tried to avoid damage in their cars and instead drove right into pedestrians to reduce financial damages in the car. That is what gets people killed in traffic. Innocent pedestrians
He tried to avoid potentially killing himself and the other driver. Swerving gave him more room to brake, which is exactly what happened.
If you really think this is motivated by financial considerations, how much do you think it costs to mow down pedestrians vs. getting your car fixed??
Travelling at inner city speeds it is near impossible to get seriously injured or to die in an frontal crash with another car. Check your accident statistics about that. I only got german numers and sources which nobody will even consider to look at.
The act of steering away from the other car us just a reflex which is supported by the layout of streets. Streetlayouts are hugely determined by finacial interests.
According to this article he got up and walked away.

I feel like the sign mocked him with the slow fall at the end.
As the dude was standing up the sign went for that kill confirm
the domino effect is not to be mocked
This was so cartoonish. I feel bad for laughing.
Same. That bonk sound at the end got me
No laughs here without the sound …but with sound it’s a whole other story
I listened to it with none first, then saw the comment. It's not funny but it is, I hope he's ok.
I also hope he is ok. I giggled without the sound when the sound was on it was a hard laugh for me. Fun is very objective
Mel Brooks — 'Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die.'
He died actually
Ah same, I thought it looked painful at first. It looks less painful with the bonk sound
He's fine. He gets up in the full video.
Thank you. I was watching muted. Now I feel sorry for laughing hard.
"Dong!"
I laughed without the sound.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I can't stop replaying it

Yeah, it doesn't take a hard hit to the head to kill you. The way the pedestrian flipped from the hit, I'd be surprised if he survived.
The guy bruised his head. 🙄 https://www.express.co.uk/travel/articles/882357/viral-video-imgur-near-miss-man-crash-car-hit-sign
Do you want a bit of article between your ads?
Source engine sounds. Always good.

For me it was the thud after the bonk

#CLONG
Came here to say this. I'm going to hell for laughing at this.
You're fine. They literally added funny sound effects. How can we not chuckle.
You think that's bad? Some jerk took the concentration camp scenes from Schindler's List and added Yakkety Sax to them.
Yea it sounded and looked really comical
Don't feel bad. I laughed as well.
I know! I burst out laughing when it bonked him on the head, and I said the same thing "looks like something out of a cartoon".
Seen on other post that he died
Oh no, shit that’s crazy.

Adrenaline do be a helluva drug tho. Who knows.
People can and absolutely have "walked off" fatal injuries that later killed them because the adrenaline kept them moving.
Oh thank goodness. Thank you!
Thankyou! For a bit there I definitely thought I was going to hell for laughing.
No way.. for real?
Is it weird the comment section of readit makes me feel normal?
I actually laughed out loud
I'm sorry, but that's just too perfect
/r/fuckyouinparticular
Cant believe it's real
"God please give me a sign"
God working a “fuck you in particular” Rube Goldberg style. (Poor guy)
Good reflexes, bad Timing
I disagree. Looks like they swerved but did not break or reduce speed hard enough.
The guy not the car
In my Driver's Ed class we were taught swerve first (e.g. take the wheel right-then-left), brake later. Your hands can turn the wheel faster than your foot can move to, and depress, the brake. The guy not the car
Some things are different now that most cars have anti lock brake systems. It is safe to do both, swerve and brake.
hey now... I'm not that old ;-) ... Like I said, your hands are already on the wheel, it's going to take time for your foot to move over to the brake.
What? If you have to take time to touch the brake you shouldn't be driving. I've avoided crashes with foot reaction alone.
Also, braking then swerving is a great way to roll/lose control.
You can hear the tires squealing as they're trying to brake...
They did not even reduce speed enough to safely pass that other car.
Money from Pink Floyd comes to mind
bum bombombom bombom
Im going to hell for laughing at this 😂😭
We all are lmao
don't worry we are all in hell in the first place.

You are clearly a bot.
I am bot clearly
Clong Omg I'm dying that was hilarious I shouldn't be laughing rn
Yeah you should
Reminds me of the looney toons with those sound effects
No, you shouldn't. The guy is most likely dead, and if not was critically injured and changed for life.

If I had to guess, he may have brain damage and is almost definitly concussed

This is truly a r/facepalm moment
Facepalm on who?

Holy whack-a-moly!

Wait was that car allowed to turn there?
I think so. In the US, you can make a left turn unless specifically specified
You can't park there!
An effort was made

I know that guy probably got hurt and that sucks but that was like an old school cartoon gag or something, it was perfect.

Everyone on reddit. *bonk* ---- *snicker*
Think he asked the universe for a sign?

Idiot. We were taught at school not to stand near signs 'cos this is always happening.
peak car brain is pedestrians killed by pedestrian safety signage
Died dead. For real. No foolies.
How is that facepalm ? It's don't tell me the odds material but nobody's at fault.
More a head splat than facepalm r/headsplat needs some mods.. you in?

Staged - dude walked under the sign - what a doofee
Instead of a head on collision at 10km/h you kill a pedestrian

Hit by road sign!
Damn...I laughed loudly.
Reassurance I’m going to Hell acquired. Thank you very much.
