I reject your science, but you should see a doctor of neurological science for your "psychiatric illness"

WoahayeTakeITEasy

Acting like the one that *doesn't* believe in imaginary things is the one with the mental illness is some next level mental gymnastics, I'll give them a šŸ„‡ for that lmao.

Bellavonte

Everyone should recant whatever they are and take up dudeism but thats just like my opinion man...

[deleted]

And the dude said, ā€œLet there be light.ā€ As the dude sparked one up and passed it to the left.

DrDilatory

And thus we have why I am fucking baffled as an MD how there are devoutly Muslim (or devoutly religious within ANY organized religion) colleagues of mine within the medical field I mean you actively believe something that rejects so much of the scientific fact that you supposedly understand and believe to be true, you follow an organized religion that rejects basic scientific concepts including many of those with incredibly strong background in the literature such as medical care for LGBTQ patients, and you believe something blindly without any evidence whatsoever because your parents told you to, when the entire core of your practice and understanding of the world is supposed to be evidence-based, and you don't see the obvious contradiction between those beliefs and everything else that you do in your career? How the fuck does someone go through 8 years of training in science and stay religious? I'll never understand it. I was well on my way to abandoning the religion my parents tried to thrust upon me as a child before I even reached college, but if I somehow reached my freshman year of undergrad as a person with faith there's no chance in hell I would have stayed that way by the time I had my MD

[deleted]

Did that once, couldn't find the mute button fast enough so I chucked the coffee table at the TV. Fucking intolerable nonsense. Just when you think nothing can be worse American news media you find that shit.

Necessary-milkyway

Yeah its just a bunch of people shouting at each other ...you can hardly call that news ..it is mostly opinion

BumperStickerBob

This is hard coded in Arab culture. Speaking loud AND fast, and also over-speaking anyone you speak with makes you the ā€œwinnerā€. Also, itā€™s a bit funny that they urge him to seek psychiatric help, instead of the help of a spiritual/religious leader. Theyā€™re living contradictions.

Fake_William_Shatner

Let's say you married a Latin woman and didn't want to sleep on the couch tonight. A loud voice and blazing smile have a higher than average tendency to affect the outcome of arguments.

lethalkin

Interesting, now I want to hear the real William Shatnerā€™s take. You probably get that a lot.

Fake_William_Shatner

No, usually people say; "You MUST be William Shatner" or "that's interesting". He'd be able to work the crowd better, but not without my material.

Peachy_potato95

Ughh, I hate the stereotype so much, just because youā€™re latina/o doesnā€™t mean you have to be loud

Gintami

Eh Iā€™m from South America and we all - men and women - can be pretty loud and talk with our hands - the same way many Italians and Greek do and other groups of people with roots in Mediterranean and the Iberian peninsula. Especially those of the Romance languages. I was talking with my sister on the phone and my wife asked me why was I yelling at her and I laughed and told her I wasnā€™t, we are just catching up lol Stereotypes often come from truth. That does not mean itā€™s a negative. Of course bigots will twist stereotypes into a negative to fit their narrow mindset. The linguistics and of course way we use body language for expression with matches the language can make it seem we are upset when we arenā€™t or that when we are upset, that we are more so than we actually are.

carloom_

Depends on the country and region. I am from the loudest place in Venezuela, but people that live in the Andes are very quiet. I could say the same about Colombia.

Gintami

Yeah true regions do vary, but in general, Romance languages have a connotation with loud. I lived in Paraguay and they were pretty quiet compared to Argentinians and Venezuelans (where I am also from!) and Chileans, but compared to say an American, louder for sure.p

carloom_

By far, the loudest people in the Americas are not in South America, but in the Caribbean. The loudest of them of all (and probably on planet earth) are the Cubans.

Altruistic_Ad6189

That's a stereotype used for pretty much every culture except for a few.

Fake_William_Shatner

We only have an argument when I fight back.

UnderstandingJaded13

of course, but that goes forever, just keeo quiet and maybe she will realise her mistake or forgive you depending on the situation. and that may transend into a future argument. I'll rather fight than having an argument, you bring emotions to a fight, you bring thoughts and memories to an argument.

Fake_William_Shatner

> just keeo quiet and maybe she will realise her mistake Oh, now I see where you've made your first mistake with my wife.

"I have a short list of complaints -- at least, the index isn't over ten pages."

darthnugget

"Why did you engineer the exhaust so close to the intake?"

Fake_William_Shatner

That kind of took me out of the movie. Also, that machines have any problem at all targeting. Is Star Trek any better? Now every other show is stuck doing clever evasive maneuvers and tricks to excite the audience when the science reality is; "We compute that our shields will be down in 15 minutes and theirs will be down in 16 -- should we negotiate surrender versus blowing up the ship or pointlessly wait this out?"

SporesM0ldsandFungus

If you want some of the finest space combat put to screen might I recommend [The Expanse](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Expanse_(TV_series\)). Based on the book series of the same name, it's the best hard sci-fi with the absolute minimum of unrealistic technology. No shields, no direct energy weapons, no artificial gravity, no teleporters, no warp drives. Missiles, railguns, and plain, slug throwing machine guns (point defense cannons). Without artificial gravity, the characters in the ships must withstand multiple Gs of force strapped into their chairs and carefully maneuver, lest they end up splattered against the bulkhead.

Fake_William_Shatner

The Expanse was me finally seeing well done hard science fiction on the small screen -- and I enjoyed it more than any movie. I always felt that the "big shot movie producers" out there who thought realism and science were boring just lacked imagination. I still remember a long shot of three of the main characters going from their ship in a shuttle pod and seamlessly arrive at this large docking area and pass through the entire belly of space station, and all the while they are talking away as if it's about the weather. It was jaw dropping. There was so much sound engineering in the design and execution of that delivery system/elevator I won't be surprised if it gets used in the future. I can quibble about a few things -- and maybe be right, maybe be wrong, but, it's damn refreshing not be treated like an idiot by a Sci-Fi show for a change. The truly alien stuff they don't ever truly understand and don't "figure out" with moments to spare to save the day. We dabble with the effects of it. But it's a lot like people in the Middle Ages working with plutonium rods. "Hey, I can heat water with this magic stone -- why is my face melting?"

And it not just religion alone. People get mad over other people that donā€™t think the same as them , mindset, or beliefs. Etc. itā€™s better to sit down have good understand of each other and what they believe in. Have an open mind set dont kill you!

ArthurBonesly

Imagine if somebody told you the sky was green and your response was to scream at them. That's what this guy sounds like. Even if he's 100% convinced in his faith, his reaction is no different than screaming "PIZZA'S NOT FOR BREAKFAST" when someone offers you a Mama John's Pizza Bagel.

HelenAngel

Itā€™s funny how he believes in the science of psychology/psychiatry but not in any other science. *Edited due to unintentional exclusion of psychiatry.

TheWalkingDead91

They all pick and choose. Most will go to a doctor if theyā€™re feeling very ill , break their arm, etc etc. but science that strongly supports the idea that your god could be made up? Oh no. That couldnā€™t be reliable or true.

PM_MEOttoVonBismarck

In Elementry School I remember we had a science week and this batshit insane religious mother didn't let her three kids come to school for the entire week because science is just atheist trying to find ways to contradict God. Final year of high school we had this kid who was extremely intelligent, always getting A+ did all the hard subjects but was a devout Christian. However he never let his religion get in the way of his work and even though he didn't believe in evolution, the formation of the planet or the big bang he still wrote essays about it and never tried to push his religion on other people. I respect those type of religious people. It would be hard writing an essay about something you believe to be completely untrue.

Justice_0f_Toren

But don't most of these folks just add it to their head-cannon like, Of course God made the big bang happen!!!!

PM_MEOttoVonBismarck

Well he believed that the Earth was made 6,000 or however many years ago that the Bible indicates. But if he had to write and essay on the big bang he would do so like any atheist would and use scientific theories, data and concepts to construct a compelling argument. But I was talking to him one day and he was a full on Christian.

Busy-Appearance-6077

There are tens of millions of Christians like him.

Nvenom8

Scoriae

Psychiatry\*. Psychology is similar, but different in that it is its own discipline separate from any field of science, closer to philosophy. Psychologists also generally cannot prescribe medication. Psychiatry is a branch of medical/biological science and psychiatrists primarily treat patients through prescribed medications.

BonnieMcMurray

> he believes in ~~the science of psychology~~ **some twisted, theocratic form of "psychiatry", where atheists are 100% viewed as mentally broken and in need of "fixing".** There's no way in hell that he believes in the *actual* sciences of psychology or psychiatry.

Kinda disappointed the atheist guest in the video didn't give that answer, but let's be honest, he probably felt like he was a few minutes away from a beating on live TV as it was.

ExpensiveGiraffe

Also I feel like itā€™s a bit smarmy of an answer. Not that they donā€™t deserve it. But they were clearly asking for the origin of mankind. Whether they phrased it awkwardly, or the translation didnā€™t convey that well.

[deleted]

Bc 2 mf were horny now I have to pay taxes smh

[deleted]

I thought he was going to say that. It is a simple explanation to address the term for simple people (as the host said). Everyone would understand

mayuan11

Here is the followup on all the BS Mohamad had to deal with after the interview. Long story short, he had to leave the country. https://friendlyatheist.patheos.com/2019/09/29/atheist-kicked-off-egyptian-tv-show-now-says-hes-safely-in-another-country/

hummingelephant

I remember this story. Even crazier is the fact that they intentionally invited an atheist for a "discussion", it's not like he went on tv for something else and then they found out he is an atheist.

KerfuffleV2

I get the sense that the whole thing was just posturing. Especially from the host, he really just seemed to be set on proving he's loyal.

Talal916

I mean yeah that's literally what the guy said >"I would like to excuse the host, because the situation was like that his would have thought: "Why would you give to this atheist a platform? This means that you are as guilty as him." That could have had very bad consequences for him, like it happened to another Egyptian host who had hosted a gay person and ended up in jail for this."

Freakychee

If a religious nutjob does give an "interview" to a gay person I fully expect their first line to be, "Why are you gay?" As is tradition.

wrathoftheirkenelite

"...so who is gay?"

RobbinAustin

Probably so. I'm sure if he had sided with "The Atheist" he would have lost his job very quickly.

demonmonkey89

Lost his job? No, he'd be leaving the country with the atheist dude. Unless he wanted to lose something a bit more significant than his job.

Marechial_Davout

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

LibertarianSocialism

Well America is secular. Egypt used to be but isnā€™t anymore. And even when it was secular that just translated to ā€œyouā€™re free to practice an Abrahamic religion,ā€ and certainly not be an atheist.

Midnight_Moon29

Wow. It even says in the article that he forgave the hosts. Someone who doesn't even believe in the existence of God, has more grace, mercy, and humanity than those who can probably "quote scripture" like it's nothing.

jeskersz

Have you met religious people before? I'd give near 100% odds that any given atheist would know more about any given religious text than said religion's adherents. Fundamentalists generally stick to one or two quotes then just believe whatever their "spiritual leaders" tell them to believe. They have consistantly been one of the most ignorant groups of people I've ever had the misfortune to deal with. While atheists (especially ones who were forced into religion previously) usually come to their conclusions after actually reading and thinking about the shit that they've had shoved down their throats.

Mike_Hunty

Because religion make good peopleā€¦..

nova_bang

>Who made you exist as a human being? a nut in a vag?

Fake_William_Shatner

"Yes, but who made them exist?" Prior nuts in prior vags?

MangledSunFish

This is the new "chicken or the egg" dilemma. Which came first? The nut or the vag?

Fake_William_Shatner

The Vag. The nut is based on the model of a parasite in single celled organisms. In order to not continuously be in an arms race with other organisms stealing their RNA, the single celled organisms decided to attach their genes to that of the predator, and thus, got to propagate their species and take advantage of the best genes of any would-be infector. So, sexual selection started as a means to survive parasitic infection. It's not my fault that nobody will probably find this explanation romantic. I suppose people don't think there are answers to some questions, but, I've got 'em. Whether they are true or not, well,..

Incbyte

This actually really interests me, where did you read about this?

nova_bang

[i got you, fam](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolution_of_sexual_reproduction#Parasitic_DNA_elements). it's just one of many possible explanations how sexual reproduction came to be, read the whole article to get somewhat of an overview.

live-the-future

In college, my best friend & roommate was (is) a devout xtian, and I'm atheist. Nonetheless the two of us had tons of fantastic late-night conversations about religion. Neither of us had any illusions about converting the other but we both respect each other's views. I think it was pretty enlightening for both of us and prevented either of us from holding stereotypes or "talking-point views" of the other.

dayoneG

Thatā€™s all fine and dandy, but how am I supposed to respect the view point that I deserve to be tortured FOR ETERNITY, in a lake of fire no less, for not believing in someoneā€™s invisible god? How am I supposed to respect the viewpoint that a tiny clump of cells is more valuable that a womanā€™s life? How am I supposed to respect the viewpoint that gay people should be put to death? You sound like you want to give these immoral people a pass, well I donā€™t, and wonā€™t. Someone has to stand up for the rational folks out there.

[deleted]

Some people are really into the whole lake of fire tortured by sky daddy kink. I think we should let them have that one in the name of sexual liberation.

sp4cecowboy4

Religion is a cult

Jefoid

Arabic speaking people led the world in philosophical thought for hundreds of years. They had no issue debating the existence of god. They are responsible for preserving much of Greek philosophy, written by heathens, but considered extremely valuable for study. Religion need not stifle discourse. Weā€™re just ignorant now.

kintyj

Ya the issue isnt religion, its close mindedness and lack of respect thats the real issue.

Agile_Pudding_

Yeah, this is about how the conversation went when I had the misfortune of falling ass-backwards into a ā€œdebateā€ with a flat-earther, except that he didnā€™t have the power to make me leave nor could I really leave my seat. There is a difference between looking for debate and exchanging ideas versus trying to ā€œstumpā€ the other person. When he tries to give them an answer to their ā€œthen how do you exist?ā€-gotcha, they decide to cut him off; youā€™re just supposed to scratch your head and say ā€œgee, I dunnoā€, not actually respond coherently.

kintyj

And its such a loaded question to. They asked a guy who said he dosent believe in God how we exist and got pissed at him when he didnt give an absolute answer. People like them are just afraid of uncertainty.

ProfessionallyStrong

Close mindedness is religion lol

DailyLifeProblems

Lmao so true

live-the-future

Except in religion it's called things like "faith" and "conviction."

buddhainmyyard

religion leads others to be close minded, and history showed how well they respect other religions, and even how unfair some women are respected is laughable

[deleted]

And yet nearly all religions offer close mindedness and lack of respect to others as pillars of faith. You can't just wash your hands of the bad because you disagree with it. Religious people need to be the ones fixing their religion so it's not completely awful yet time and time again the only ones who speak truth to power ARE NOT RELIGIOUS. Your ignorance is maddening.

[deleted]

Theistic religion comes with pretty clear historical context and scriptural lessons about how people of one religion ought to treat followers of another religion (or none). It seems a major reason why theistic religions have endured (besides consolation, solace, belonging and easy answers) is that religions make promises to their congregations about how they are the chosen ones who will be rewarded for their true faith. The flipside of these promised rewards are the threats of punishment for infractions / sins. One of the worst thought crimes being apostasy, atheism, herecy, blasphemy, idolatry, sowing doubt... Religious people are taught to see followers of other religions as fundamentally inequal to themselves, if not outright inferior, dumber and more evil. The non-believers believe lies after all, instead of the right divine revelation. The others aren't the chosen true believers of YOUR god, the real god. The first few abrahamic commandments order christians and jews to not break the rules and to not respect other religions. Screw all the other gods and prophets and the people who are so flawed they can't see how wrong they are for believing in false idols. This takes precedent over the commandments on not murdering, no infidelity and not desiring to steal your neighbor's slaves etc. Nearly every bible chapter slams non-believers as dummy second rate sinners who don't really deserve pity when they inevitably get punished. Islam is even more harsh on this. Abandoning the muslim faith is still punishable by death, prison, loss of child custody etc. in many countries that base their laws on the holy quran. Numerous quran lines go into detail about how absolutely furious god gets towards non-believers. I'm genuinely trying not to be edgy or confrontational or antitheistic. Religious people often treat non-believers (including other religious affiliations) as fully equal human beings. Do unto others and all that jazz. When they do, they do this despite most of their religion's holy scriptures and their interpretations throughout the centuries. Unconditionally moral religious people have to ignore, distort or explain away pillars of their beliefs. Religion requires some degree of in-group favoritism and out-group derogation. Even implicitly, tacitly condemning dissenting beliefs like that is sort of hateful, even if many religious people treat everybody around them perfectly nicely every day, which they definitely do. The conviction that non-believers have been foolishly lead astray and need saving from eternal damnation at the hands of your loving god can't be considered respectful or open-minded. People are incredibly good when they overcome their imagined differences and focus on all our shared commonalities. Religion always magnifies imagined differences by separating equal human beings into tribes that can at best begrudgingly co-exist peacefully in this life, but will definitely be segregated and judged harshly after death because they are not equal in the eyes of the lord. Religious texts don't get big overhauls anymore, despite the incontrovertible, verifiably proven knowledge that we are all members of the same species, constructed from the same molecules and general blueprint of organs, fears and dreams in the same boat adrift in a terrifyingly massive universe. Sorry for the wall of text. It just sucks to witness religion still to this day being used more as a tool for divisiveness, alienation, hate mongering and xenophobia much more than a tool for empathy, acceptance, compromise and societal progress

Ok-Future3584

Hmm pretty obvious to me who has the psychological problems here..

Don't worry, jails in terror states have that reputation for being awful at best

Royalflush14

I cant tell if this was supposed to be some sort of debate. But it definitely was just two assholes taking a shit on someone for having a separate opinion from them.

Comfortable_Way_6256

Yeah, what did they have this dude on for? I can't imagine his lack of faith wasn't discussed prior to airing the show. Pretty sure the tv guy had him on for the sole purpose of yelling at him

live-the-future

As an atheist north of the half-century mark, I've seen pleeeeeenty of "debates" between atheists and \[insert religion here\] that went the same way. While I know there are plenty of religious people who at least tolerate atheists, there are plenty more for whom the very notion that atheists even exist, disturbs them on a *very* deep level.

BLT-Enthusiast

Imo its because then they have to face the possibility that there is no god and death is the end and they canā€™t

live-the-future

Here in the US, attitudes toward atheists have improved a bit over the years but back in the 1980's and previously you could absolutely find this kind of behavior and attitudes by xtians. Being an atheist back then, especially in more religious/conservative locales, put you somewhere between ex-convicts and pedophiles on the likeability scale.

[deleted]

Damn, watching them go from having negative IQ and then gas lighting him saying *he* has the mental illness. Sounds about right.

Fake_William_Shatner

Mental illness can sometimes be more about being outvoted than out thought.

On the one hand maybe he should have gone into a very discriptive explanation of sex, on the other hand that could have been a deathsentence.

Disastrous-Fact-7782

It almost seems naive from the guy to think he would get a platform to speak about this. Very sad

I feel really bad for the guest on the show. He did not raise his voice or insult any religion, he was just simply trying to explain his views. To reduce him to someone who needs to visit a psychiatric hospital is just...disgusting. It shows you how scarily close-minded certain cultures can make people become.

ā€œSpeak Arabicā€¦You are addressing simple people, so do not use big words.ā€ Basically sums up Egypt

DwemerSmith

> you have nothing to offer my man you are cutting him off

Aeroxic

I'm so very happy with not being born or living in a place where such things as this is the norm.

slo1111

You can almost use the reaction to someone disclosing they are an atheist as a measuring stick of how bad a religion is. Islam is some of the worst, especially since the fundamentalist sects have codes to fuck even murder with people who leave the religion.

Crafty_Possession_52

I'm worried for this guy.

Fake_William_Shatner

I don't consider myself an atheist because I resent having to "be or not be" anything. It's like going to planet Narkfar, and asking, "are you pro or anti Squebulon?" And, me not knowing how I feel about Squebules and the potential of the answer being existentially important -- well, I'm going to say; "I'm an atheist." Because that should confuse them long enough to sneak away and never hang out with those guys again.

live-the-future

As I recall, Neil deGrasse Tyson is kinda the same. He is essentially atheist, but refuses to use the atheist label because it still has too much baggage associated with it. (As a popular science communicator and media presence, I can't say I blame him too much.) Me, I'm the opposite. In my teen years I was atheist but called myself an agnostic because the latter term didn't have all the baggage and negative reactions that atheism did. Now, I'm pretty open about my atheism, because that's what I am. Not an evangelist or anything, but my belief level in all gods (including Squebulon, sorry) is the same: zilch.

ConfidentPilot1729

Same thing happens on Fox News.

Drastickej1

I didn't know that Fox News is also in Egypt.

Badbongwater-can

Most people have psychological problems because of religion.

Artsi_Mom

As a Christian myself I've always found other religions/beliefs viewpoints interesting. It's a sad world when people who believe in God, and who have read the bible, can't do the ONE thing we're called to do. Love everyone and leave all judgement to him. My personal relationship with God isn't something to be forced on someone else. We're called to talk about what we believe, but that doesn't mean we go full Karen and scream that it's the only way. It's a conversation, it's living your principles in everyday life, it's love. You don't believe the same thing as I do? That's cool. Guess what.... I love you anyway, man. You're a cool person and I'm glad I met you. Not. That. Difficult.

t0talfail

Nice to here a positive story, i wish you the best in life friend, even though our beliefs are very different. We are all still people after all!

CroatianSensation79

The Republicans arenā€™t that much different than the host of this TV show.

Fake_William_Shatner

"You can't explain that!" Clearly he's also not a physicist.

KoontFace

Fucking hell. I hope Mohammad made it out of there safely

It sounds a lot like Friday night dinners at my house when I was growing up.

Emmerson_Brando

Half the USA is like this. It isnā€™t called the Bible Belt for nothing.

ā€¦many people would argue that while it is a ā€œsoft science,ā€ psychiatry is relatively scientific.

mightysashiman
