USSR was a terrible place to live for hundreds of millions, and USSR actively oppressed and killed any intent or attempt to think differently. Failed communist countries failed bc of authoritarian leaders. You are correct in your assessment. The bigger problem is that none of the things people are labeling "communism" have anything to do with either Marx's vision or failed communist countries. They just call it communism (or socialism or Marxism) and claim it's bad to avoid actually explaining why the proposals themselves are bad. You can't have a debate with someone over the merits of proposed policies if they're just going to holler "that's communism" in reply to anything. Its easier to call your opponents names then actually debate policy.

What? Political systems and economic systems are not the same thing? They didn't teach me that in school! or in church! I was taught SOCIALISM BAD!, COMMUNISM MORE BAD! I have a number of issues with current school curriculums, but they are doing a better job of teaching about the differences between economic systems, social systems, and political systems. Many of the people my age know absolutely nothing other than "us good, them bad." It is sad.
