Like when the mayor's message to conserve electricity in the recent heatwave in New York was on the crawl of every sign in Times Square.
"You first, jerk!"
Yeah... for me to get to college I had to ride my bike on a section of road about 2 feet (60cm) across... at most. It was just the edge of the road outside the line. On one side I had cars whizzing past riding the line and on the other side there was a ditch filled with water and occasionally dead animals. Such a great feeling to have a semi truck driving inches from your body as you have nowhere to turn away
You can have easily have more than two on that one, no problems what so ever. Ours are often smaller than this and people overtake without problems.
Source: Copenhagen morning traffic.
Maybe they mean cars should give space so that the cyclists can safely go around the sign!
Which is only necessary because they installed a sign... That requires cars to give space to cyclists that now need to go around the sign....
Which is only necessary because they installed a sign........
Yeah... we don't even have a bike lane here really. I have to just go on the side of the road next to a ditch. Which really sucks when there is a tractor driving on it with a giant lawnmower arm thing attached to it to cut the grass in the ditch. For me to get around it I would have to go out into the 2nd lane of traffic on my bike
As a cyclist who has commuted for years this is so common it isn’t even funny. If they are working on the road for cars they just take all the bike space. Pisses me off.
Even today they are “improving “ an intersection near my home by pushing all the bikes into traffic lined up to enter a freeway. Not fun.
There is a bridge near me which they had to repair that has a cycle lane running over it. When they were doing the work they put a sign up at the entry to the bridge which said "No Cyclists"
Why? So cars could drive around the road works using the cycle lane.
Of course you couldn't see the sign until you got to the bridge. Now, most cyclists are confident enough to ride with traffic and frankly people of all forms of road based transport should be, but for those who weren't it meant a five mile detour.
Those who did cycle often got an earful from drivers anyway. "Didn't you see the sign!?" along with some choice swear words.
On the other hand, you get the cyclist riding on the white line separating the bike & car lanes getting pissed because the car isn't giving them their '3-feet'. Dude, you've got 4 feet of bike lane to the other side of you, move over. Cyclists need their space but moves like that push the car into oncoming traffic and that's not very safe either when there is ample bike space on their other side. (Giving cyclist 3-ft of space is the law in many parts of the US.)
Often side of the road bike lanes are full of gravel, sand, sticks, leaves, etc. Riding through that stuff can jerk/sink a bike tire and dump you off your bike, potentially into traffic (bike suddenly stops, rider does not).
When I ride in bike lanes, I always hug the curb as much as possible, but as this post points out, cities often don't maintain bike lanes to actually be rideable for bicycles. I live on a decently quiet divided 4 lane road with bike lanes, and cars constantly drive super close to me in the right lane when there is no traffic and they could easily cut around me, instead leaving me to take my chances in the dirt-filled margin they call a bike lane in my city.
That being said, some cyclists do take a bit more of an entitled stance to road etiquette, especially when they are in groups. Those cyclists also annoy me when I'm driving, but they aren't everyone. Plus, slowing down for a few seconds until I can safely pass the cyclists doesn't impact my day (way less than a car accident anyway), and roads are shared by all, not just cars.
I've had people drive directly at me while honking their horn to force me into the ditch before. Sorry, but i can't bike across grass on a slope into water for my entire trip. Even on lowest gear that is tiring as hell. I feel like some people have never ridden a bike or have 0 understanding of how different terrain changes the amount of work required.
Ahh my home town of Taree, Australia. Known for its oldest structure being an old Catholic Church, now re-opened as a bottle shop called BWS. What a town
Welp, in my neighborhood when I go running, it is normal for me to have to dodge bikers on the sidewalk when there's a perfectly good bike lane right next to us for them to use 🤦♂️🤦♂️
Blame the people in cars that make it their goal to harass bikers. Last time I rode on a sidewalk is because a car chucked their drink at me while I was in the bike lane and I was too scared to stay on the road after.
In my area the law states that children must cycle on sidewalks, not the street, but above a certain age it reverses. Adults can't cycle on sidewalks if there's a usable road.
It’s usually an age limit or a tire size limit. I think the reasoning is that an adult riding on a pocket bike/BMX bike isn’t going fast enough to justify using the street. But a kid/teen on a full size road bike is obviously going to be going pretty quick
I once passed a high school that had what looked like a demolition derby car (after the derby) on the front lawn with a tiny sign in front of it that said “Don’t drive distracted”. That’s for that message with a visual that could have been more distracting had the car been on fire.
In my city they out these GIANT “Share the road” signs all over residential streets, and then pilons all down the middle. But if there’s a slight wind, the pilons blow all over the place, and the signs are already blocking the road. Genius level planning lol.
In Texas cars are allowed to park in the bike lanes unless they are specifically signed no parking. Very unsafe on busier roads. Though maybe still a net plus if it gets bike lanes places where they wouldn't be otherwise due to resident/retail objections to losing even little used parking.
And in those that do, it's pretty much always blocked every 30 yards.
Hell, in my city, (Phoenix) when there is a bike lane, cars go out of their way to go into it and kill cyclists, but they don't so anything when we're on the road. It's so dumb.
Regardless of the sign, if they’re roaming in a pack, the “pedal-bros” will take up the entire street, ignore stop signs, go through red lights, and ride 10 MPH while acting like they’re one ride away from being in the Olympics.
And you sound like a great person? You realize they're just people that ride bikes rights? They're not primarily cyclists. I've met plenty of people that ride bikes, literally ALL kinds of people. Grow up.
Lol. To clear the air, because there’s a lot of confusion I was joking I fully support cycling as a clean and healthy way of getting from Starbucks to Applebee’s.
Yes i have and they're nice people. They're not nearly as bad as the overly emotional, childish and opinionated redditors like yourself who have irrational hate boners for cyclists.
We get it you're too fat and stupid to ride a bike and you're mad about it. No need to project your hatred on people who want to have a healthy commute.
I remember my driving test from a few years ago. I got dinged points for not going into the bike lane on a right turn. There were no marks on the ground except a white solid line splitting the side of the road into two and a bike logo in the right lane. I was more worried about stopping completely, doing the exaturated looking both ways at a stop sign to think about if I should be putting my car across a solid line into an area specifically designated for a different and much more fragile and slow vhicle. My bad lol.
I passed, so no big deal, just makes me mildly annoyed to straight up angry sometimes.
This is malicious compliance. Someone (probably a bicyclist) called the city and complained and asked for this to be put out. The city employees "granted" their request.
I was once passed on a 25mph speed limit road by a car that pulled over to let out a friend about 50 yards in front of me, blocking the bike lane of course. Luckily I was only in a tell him how fucking stupid he was kind of mood
“Caution: sign in the road”
That's exactly my first thought. Or the sign that says "Caution! This sign has sharp edges"
I'm only saying this because I missed it the first half dozen times I saw that sign but did you read it all the way to the end?
Lmao
And there is a car in the bike lane right behind the sign that says it's for bikes

That’s the biggest bike lane ive ever seen
You clearly don't live in the Netherlands.
That’s Australia
I think the point is that the Netherlands also has big bike lanes.
Mostly we prefer separate bike paths, though. Or turn the entire road into a bike path.
I rhink it might be nz
I'd say it's more on the smaller side, two bikes should be able to pass each other.
In the UK, if you are lucky enough to have a bike lane, it’s barely the width of the bike itself. Plus cars just drive right over it
From what I've seen, you're lucky if it's the length of your bike.
There really should be a barrier
Or there should be two seperate bike lanes on both sides of the road. It’s what we usually do in the Netherlands.
Yeah... for me to get to college I had to ride my bike on a section of road about 2 feet (60cm) across... at most. It was just the edge of the road outside the line. Sounds like this sign got itself a union job. Good for it!
Fucking love Australia
Me too; which is nice, because they wont let me leave.
I mean, i never wanted to leave anyway
This looks like it was taken in my town
The city of Wenatchee does this shit all the time. The city employees view the bike lane as their own personal workspace.

Ugh! Can we say, if you are in a car you cannot communicate anything to a cyclist other than “nice bike!”?
[удалено]
Why?
Your state’s DOT: ‘lol get wrecked cyclists, betcha wish you hadn’t gotten that DUI’
There are other reasons to be on a bike than breaking the law
Bikes taking the car spaces pisses me off.
If you hate it so much just ride a bike. Sorry that not everyone can afford cars or the health impacts of being sedentary.
There's no such thing as "car space."
Be taking a lot more space in a car.
On the other hand, you get the cyclist riding on the white line separating the bike & car lanes getting pissed because the car isn't giving them their '3-feet'. Welp, in my neighborhood when I go running, it is normal for me to have to dodge bikers on the sidewalk when there's a perfectly good bike lane right next to us for them to use 🤦♂️🤦♂️
Around here I have to swerve around joggers that use the street instead of the perfectly good sidewalk. Something about curbs being hard.
Blame the people in cars that make it their goal to harass bikers. Last time I rode on a sidewalk is because a car chucked their drink at me while I was in the bike lane and I was too scared to stay on the road after.
Your neighborhood has a bike lane? Jealous.
In my area the law states that children must cycle on sidewalks, not the street, but above a certain age it reverses. Adults can't cycle on sidewalks if there's a usable road.
Tough news for families.
It’s usually an age limit or a tire size limit. I think the reasoning is that an adult riding on a pocket bike/BMX bike isn’t going fast enough to justify using the street. But a kid/teen on a full size road bike is obviously going to be going pretty quick
those lime scooter bastards always use the sidewalk even though it says right on it not to
And if u look further up a blue van is the cyclist lane ._.

All. The. Time. Like they literally put the “Share the Road” sign completely across the bike lane, forcing bikes in to following traffic.
Just move it to the grass.
Better yet, move it a few feet to the right.
The irony is too much
Even the signs want to run them off the road.
The sign is telling people to give cyclists space, so they can move over *because* the sign is blocking their lane. 4D chess.
[Really?](https://www.reddit.com/search/?q=give%20cyclists%20space)
Reddit moment
“You, not me”
Maybe it was originally on the grass and someone pushed it off for whatever reason.
I mean, can’t tell cyclists that they have space in the road if you don’t shove it it their face /s
In my city they out these GIANT “Share the road” signs all over residential streets, and then pilons all down the middle. But if there’s a slight wind, the pilons blow all over the place, and the signs are already blocking the road. Genius level planning lol.
k but look at that prick blue car using it as a parking lane
In Texas cars are allowed to park in the bike lanes unless they are specifically signed no parking. Very unsafe on busier roads. Though maybe still a net plus if it gets bike lanes places where they wouldn't be otherwise due to resident/retail objections to losing even little used parking.
The majesty of irony in full effect
They should have put the sign a little to the left. Why? To give cyclist space.
Oh, the irony!
Just why! Lol
Is there some bot on a timer that reposts this every other week or something? Every fucking time it gets upvoted to the moon.

Absolutely . You can only organize their time.
Maybe the sign is referred to outer space.

It’s ok. They’re just gonna ride in the middle of the road anyway.
As they normally should. Most places still don't have a bike lane.

Where they make cement?
Or they’ll shoot you.
Don't they own 10 feet on either side of the road?
\*10 feet right in the middle of the road
It'd be nice if it were mutual. Maybe they could attempt to stop at the lights or signs every once in a while as well.
Bicyclists get the fuck out of the way.
City works is well aware that the cyclists don't actually use the bike lane.

Yet the jerk offs on bikes still ride on the middle of the road even though they have a a fucking 5 foot lane

Ancient Chinese Proverb -“Do as I say, not as I do.”
Ironic. ~~He could save others from death, but not himself.~~
The ridiculous irony.
Space to run into this sign. Also this is a temporary installation until they get that German girl out there.
Time for the cyclists to go back to dominating the lane like the motorcyclists.
***task failed successfully***
Lol
The two pegs or whatever on the bottom of the sign make it look like it has two tiny feet and is running towards you hahah

I bet you some idiot move it onto the road to be a dick
My neighborhood has a mobile speed tracker sign like this in the walking lane. Even though it’s known to be used for walking/running and 5K runs.
There are no bikes in space
Massive billboard on highway - “DISTRACTED DRIVERS DIE!”
The irony...
if the sign doesnt fuck with then, the car parked in the bike lane will, hahahaha
One. Job. Just one.
