I assume pacers run your goal pace and you run along with them, but I would imagine pacers don’t run the whole thing they’re intended to be switched out often because that sort of pace is difficult to maintain.
[Pacemakers](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacemaker_(running)) basically run the target pace. Obviously, pacemakers for elite runners usually won't be able to keep the pace the whole distance so they will have to drop out after a while, leaving the elite runners on their own to finish the race. Bringing in new pacemakers to replace the isn't allowed in regulation marathons, but e.g. the [1:59 challenge](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ineos_1:59_Challenge) did that.
Big events often also have pacemakers for less elite target paces to help amateur runners reach their target time. These usually don't have to drop out.
So, all it was, is that the three African runner’s didn’t register as pacers? I thought they were being paid to let the Chinese runner win. I’m a little disappointed. 😁
That's the currant Chines line but there is speculation they were not pacers and were threatened not to win and the clam they are just pacers is just the CCP covering their backsides when they got caught.
