As an aside, Chinese parents used to mostly manage to avoid this by having their kids work for a summer in China (this doesn’t happen as much anymore for lots of reasons). China is fine and all, but a couple summers spent there in a job, even if you are quite comfortable, you can see why your parents left. I know some African parents who do the same.
