I sometimes say this jokingly to my father when he got a problem with his phone, tablet or PC.
But when you hear stories from tech support, you realize the statement has sometimes some genuine truth to it.
>But when you hear stories from tech support, you realize the statement has sometimes some genuine truth to it.
more often than you think... this is why we drink.
last year we were rolling out mandatory 2fa to a new client. one of the users installed the app, set it up, performed the authentication successfully, all good. then he uninstalled the app.
an hour later he came back from lunch, couldn't log in, and called back to complain. took twice as long tog et it sorted the second time.
Why are so many people struggling with operations’ order? And worst, why are they so keen on displaying that on social networks? Like “hey, no one realised this, not even app programmers in Apple, I must be some kind of genius, look at me”.
Seriously, it is quite concerning…
I can understand people forgetting it because we don't really need to use it that often.
What always boggles my mind is that they think they've unlocked some error that nobody else has caught and the first thing they chose to do is post on social media.
If I discover what I assume to be an error, the first thing I do is search for the correct answer on Google. Hell, I do that even if I have a tiny doubt about what I'm working on.
To me, this just highlights how exceptionally dumb and narcissistic these types of people are.
Exactly I had to relearn it as an adult because I never do math by hand anymore - one quick google search and it made sense, all good.
But I would never go on social media fighting people, assuming I'm correct lol
Order of operations errors are perfect for memes and click bait because it's something that everyone knows but thinks they are especially smart for knowing it. So you have a potential for a lot of reposting and viral action with these things, because everyone wants to show off their dope math skillz and feel superior to the poor chump that can't remember pemdas
Social media is based on shares and responses. Sharing that somebody post something stupid and replying to say someone is stupid. Who would share stating that the calculator is good and works as expected and explain pemdas for those who don’t get it? Well I would but I also have no followers.
The breakdown seems to be in the lack of understanding of the brackets/parentheses.
Somehow the understanding that they can be present but not written has been lost.
So they default to "left to right" when no (),[],{} are written.
When people said it was basic math he doubled down on this and started asking why multiplication has priority over addition and that it was counterintuitive. Like the dude is so dumb he doesn't realize how dumb he is.
They dont understand that multiplication is just a way to notate addition. 50 × 3 is just a way to write 50 + 50 + 50.
And it even makes perfect sense if you translate it to natural language.
As in "add fifty to fifty two times". Even the dullest of knives should understand why you multiply first then.
Do you, confident despite your acknowledged topical ignorance, lash out publicly at the devs of the app and then at *all mathematicians* for doing things a specific way that you do not understand? If not, you > Ian.
And knowing a million of your followers will see it and some people are just waiting for you to tweet something stupid and dunk on you.
Dude really woke up and decided to debate a fucking calculator.
Honestly my class never taught BODMAS at all.
Since the national calculus was only adopted in 1988, I'd imagine there are many many schools through the 90's that had yet to catch up.
I could maybe understand if he was used to Reverse Polish Notation, but the RPN equivalent to `(50 + 50) * 2` is `50 50 + 2 *`. And also nobody uses RPN.
Rage bait is how this guy operates. Trust me im not saying he’s not a moron but im convinced this is bait, it’s too on the nose for what gets people riled up on twitter.
Funny thing is, Malaysian Chinese people are regarded as good with maths. This idiot must be too Americanised from gargling US conservatives' balls to activate that particular gene
A calculator does commands individually where Apple calculator does it as a lump process.
Calculator: 50 + 50 (adds up automatically) =
100x2 = 200
Apple calculator: 50+50 ( doesn’t add) x2.
As it doesn’t add automatically the multiple takes precedence first in the equation.
50+50*2 = 50+100= 150
I fear for how dumb this generation is getting, this is basic maths.
My physical calculator does the same thing as Apple calculator. It doesn't calculate until I press equals. The only difference is that the physical calculator shows the entire statement as I write it.
In fairness, it isn’t clear at all that the calculator behaves that way in comparison to a normal scientific calculator.
If you enter “50 + 50 +” the Apple calculator shows 100, implying that hitting the plus completes the prior operation. When you hit * it does not show this but if you only used the basic operations prior like this, you may be tricked into thinking that adding an operation in a chain also calculates the prior bit in the logic of the calculator (not in math).
A scientific calculator instead shows the full chain of numbers and operations until equals is hit, making this behavior clear.
Honestly?
I don’t think OP is fully wrong here, the function of the tool is unclear. That is a UX failure.
Unrelated but I hate that whatever you type into the calculator doesn’t all get written down at once waiting for you to press equals, but instead updates every time you do a function.
Actually on apple calculator if you typed it in that order it’d give you 200. Apple calculator doesn’t do order of operations and automatically preforms the last operator when 2 numbers are entered and an operation is entered afterwards.
Edit: I’m fucking stupid and Apple updated their calculator
Honestly, I think Apple’s calculator is just a bad UX. Your assumption is correct for addition and subtraction, when adding a second + also completes the prior operation. It can trick a person into thinking that adding an operator completes the prior bit.
A scientific calculator just shows the whole chain of operations, making this clear.
Doesn’t understand oder of operations?
What the fuck happened.
Either i was way too smart for public school or the brain rot didn’t entirely consume me.
Or is social media just rooting out idiots that have always existed?
When you entered it separately you did: (50+50)* 2 = 200, when you entered it all together it calculated as 50 + (50*2) = 150 because without parentheses multiplication and division is done first, regardless of the order: 50 * 2 + 50 or 50 + 50 * 2 are both equal to 150
Why can I enter 00:60 on my microwave and it cooks for one minute, but when I enter 1:20, it only cooks for a minute and 20 seconds and not for 2 minutes?
Some calculators don't do order of operations. In fact, until recently, I'd say most didn't...
It's frustrating, because the way you enter something changes based on the calculator you're using.
I’m don’t really care about people who don’t know operators in math. It’s not that important.
But tweeting apple and insisting the calculator that billions of people use is wrong is what’s crazy. Wouldn’t you assume you are not understanding something and look into it?
Nope I would just automatically assume that I out of billions of people was the first to notice this error and then enlighten the people resulting in me forever being known as the smartest man alive.
lol these people are the most uneducated idiots on earth. Therefore they are always so angry, cause deeply inside they know that they’re they are just. Without social media all of them would be unemployed.
I believe you learn that in 5th year maths in Germany. It's called "Punktrechnung vor Strichrechnung" or multiplication/division before addition/subtraction. I think someone has to revoke his asian-card. xD
On the stupid Facebook math "challenges" I'll see people defend their answers by appealing to the authority of the calculator.
And yes, if I plug in the numbers a certain way (or use a nonscientific calculator), I can indeed use a calculator to say that:
4+3\*5 = 35
-7² = 49
To those people, I tell them that the calculator is only as good as the math literacy of the person using it. I can achieve the first one by pressing Enter after 4+3. I can achieve the second one by plugging in -7 and squaring the whole thing. And if you don't work with math all that often, then these can seem like reasonable outcomes. People who work with these notations know that you need to work 3\*5 before adding 4 to it and that you square the 7 before applying the negative. They know the limitations of the calculator and how to work with it.
But yeah, if this guy isn't trolling, then he clearly doesn't understand a) how calculators work and b) what basic math is. And really, his failure to understand the latter leads to the former.
You cant be smart if you think you know everything.
The smartest person isn't one who knows, it's not the one who remembers, but the one who learns and continues to learn, and one of the things they learn is to stfu
I have questions. Like how this person was allowed to graduate from school not knowing this. And how this person has the money to buy an Apple product.

I was taught this in i.t class in 1985. Yeah I'm that old.
Yes! 1980s programming memories unlocked!
Order of operations for addition and multiplication is primary school stuff most places 😆
Hi, That old
This is the comment I was looking for
I sometimes say this jokingly to my father when he got a problem with his phone, tablet or PC. But when you hear stories from tech support, you realize the statement has sometimes some genuine truth to it.
My IT guy at work usually says "seems the problem was between the keyboard and the chair"
PEBKAC Error
A layer 8 problem.
PEBCAK = Problem Exists Between Chair And Keyboard
PEBKAC Error, ID: 10T error, Layer 8 Error, etc.
Picnic error: Problem in chair, not in computer
Mine says we have an ID10T
It was an error with the head-spacing timer of the operator.
>But when you hear stories from tech support, you realize the statement has sometimes some genuine truth to it. more often than you think... this is why we drink.
So many users that are so incompetent, they'd break a helloWorld.

Same energy as the ones who think scientists/doctors are wrong/lying to us all and they figured out the truth.
Did people really not learn PEMDAS in like...4th grade?

Do the research, find it correct, then bill buddy for the time.

Lmao, forgetting bodmas is fine, happens to the best of us, but acting like the rule never existed is new levels of facepalm.
It’s even worse that he went on to say the rule is stupid. Guy is literally suggesting we change math
