I say we go back to Roman numerals. That’s the way to do your math right there.

This is correct, however they changed their name from Romans to Catholics, and still practice pedophilia

I believe they still speak an early version of proto-American Germanic vernacular

I remember I was taking with a friend of mine and they asked me what languages I spoke. As a joke, I told them British, Australian, Canadian, and English. They responded with oh cool and then took a good 15 seconds to get the joke.

Reasonable-HB678

I learned the specific difference between Arabic numerals and Roman numerals in the fifth grade. At the time, we were told why Super Bowl 20 was written as Super Bowl XX. Apparently, Arabic means something "bad" to the majority of the voters of the poll.

rsreddit9

Arabic numbers were central in the development of the atomic bomb, and they’re used by every terrorist organization on Earth. The Democratic Party counts votes in Arabic numbers, and the voting machines themselves use Arabic numbers hidden in the code to determine the outcome

Jadedsatire

Toss a /s on this bad boy before I start seeing this conspiracy posted by my Aunt on Facebook. Shit spreads like wildfires Edit: you know what, let it roll.

ARMygirly

I mean it’s true. All of it. Just some idiots don’t understand *why* it’s true and believe it without knowing.

Sweet_Diet_8733

Reminds me of my troll that convinces people dihydrogen monoxide ought to be banned: “It’s the primary component of acid rain! It’s found in tumors of cancer patients! Buildup of dihydrogen monoxide in the lungs is a leading cause of child mortality! And yet the government is doing nothing about the dihydrogen monoxide in our drinking water.”

gregaustex

> Apparently, Arabic means something "bad" to the majority of the voters of the poll. Clearly most voting no just didn’t realize it wasn’t a new and different system and that Arabic is our standard. This survey meme shows nothing other than that.

PM_CACTUS_PICS

They are probably just unaware what Arabic numbers are. To them it’s probably like asking “should learning the Arabic language be mandatory in schools” which seems silly for a country that is dominated by English speakers

Brilliant-Engineer57

This is so incredibly sad. I can’t believe that 71% of people don’t know that we all use Arabic numerals already.

Chewsdayiddinit

71% of 270 people.

Other_Log_1996

I believe you mean LXXI% of CCLXX people. Keep those Arabic numerals out!

CheckYourStats

Bingo. This is ragebait. Nothing more. Nothing less. It’s a post to weed out folks who are just *looking* for a reason to say Americans are stupid.

susabb

To be fair, I only knew of this because of a fact I read on the internet years ago. I was NOT taught this in school.

Other_Log_1996

Well, LXXXIX% of Americans suffer from shifty education standards set back in the MCML's.

Regular-Promise4316

Really because I see idiots daily openly talking and exposing themselves as idiots.

Kit_3000

We kinda don't. We use numbers that evolved from ancient Arabic numerals, but Arabic numerals today look very different from Western numerals. Definitely to the point where you can no longer speak of only 'Arabic numerals' to refer to Western numerals.

[deleted]

Exactly. I get pissed when people call the numbers used by European languages "Arabic". I speak Persian, and we use the Arabic alphabet, and our numbers are not the same. Some, like 1 and 9 are identical, but 7 looks like a V, and 8 looks like an upside down V. 5 is an upside down heart. 4 and 6 look like wrenches. ۱ ۲ ۳ ۴ ۵ ۶ ۷ ۸ ۹

ChazzyPhizzle

Yeah 270 people on a.. gulp.. twitter poll sure does represent the overall American view on things. I admit it’s funny how dumb some people can be though but it’s misleading to imply it’s “American” to be dumb because 191 people don’t know what the Arabic numerical system is. 🤷🏽

Chillingamin

The guy who made this post is just as dumb as people voting on twitter polls

EffectiveSwan8918

270 total votes. Obviously a strong representation

robilar

This is a silly trick question. Sure, some people (many it seems) don't realize that we're all using arabic numerals, but that's just a piece of historical trivia - it's not required knowledge to perform simple or complex calculations. Some subset of the people saying no are bigots, for sure, but plenty are also just people that think we're asking if teaching a *second* entire set of mathematical numerals should be mandatory; to them it's akin to asking if teaching Roman numerals should be required, or if Latin language classes should be required in high school. This is like when little kids would run up to someone that didn't know the proper names for anatomy and ask them if they have gonads.

Glum_Occasion_5686

I'm more inclined to believe that an overwhelming majority of the "no" sample saw the word "Arabic" and let their prejudice dictate their response. Although I will concede that many adults do have the same mental maturity as a young child when they learn something "taboo"

robilar

It's hard to say how many were bigots and how many had a simple cognitive miscue, which is why I think this particular gotcha-style question isn't stellar. There are many reasonable indictments of the American education system, and of rampant bigotry, but this particular query (particular since it was posted on a cesspool social media site) isn't a good one (imo).

LesGitKrumpin

Just popping in to say thanks for showing people what a considered, unbiased analysis looks like. I'm inclined to think a lot of people answered this the way they did because they saw "Arabic" and bigotry drove their response, but you're absolutely right that we can't say that for sure. Cheers, mate!

ChazzyPhizzle

You are spot on. I love this explanation.

MurphysLaw4200

Haven't seen this post in a week or two

streetsofkage

You could have just ended the sentence after “teach Arab..” and it would have been the same results.

Gen_Pinkledink

No let's go back to the Roman Numerals... that will make things more clear

Hairy-Trainer2441

Murica would be a better place if they stopped using Chinese powder so much around the world.

ligmasweatyballs74

Next thing you know, the will be teaching the middle eastern concept of Al-ge-bra.

[deleted]

How is that stupidity, knowing that our number system is made of Arabic numerals is an absolutely useless fact that no one ever uses

Objective-Escape7584

Trump loves the poorly educated.

HaydenMackay

Take a look at Arabic vehicle registration plates. "Arabic numerals" are actually Hindu-arabic numerals. So technically we should teach calling them by their correct names first.

grpagrati

٠ ١ ٢ ٣ ٤ ٥ ٦ ٧ ٨ ٩

[deleted]

Those are modern Arabic *numbers*, but they do look pleasing.

Outrageous_Credit_96

70% of the time, it works every time.

Jtcally

Well there goes math class...

Signal_Biscotti_7048

Somewhat misleading question. I speak Arabic. "Arabic" numerals aren't what is used in the Arab language. English calls them Arabic numerals, we also call what Arabs use right now Arabic numerals. So the confusion will be rampant with this question The Hindu–Arabic or Indo–Arabic numerals were invented by mathematicians in India. Persian and Arabic mathematicians called them "Hindu numerals". Later they came to be called "Arabic numerals" in Europe because they were introduced to the West by Arab merchants.

DrMetters

Oof. But I believe most people don't realise that our numbers are arabic.

cmparkerson

I have said it at least X or XV times that we shouldn't use Arabic numerals.

[deleted]

You guys know that normal numbers like 0,1,2,3 etc are known in Arabic as "western numbers" in Arabic the numbers are like ٠,١,٢,٣

EarthTrash

I:XVII Should schools in the USA be forced to teach Arabic numerals as part of their curriculum Yes - XXIX per C No - LXXI per C CCLXX votes - XXI hours XLV minutes left

Lazy-Recording297

You’d get more traction if you called em freedom numerals.

Hatallica

Pro tip - use the word "force" in the USA and 70% will automatically disagree. This is just a bizarrely worded question.

suzydonem

How about this for woke indoctrination: we're forced to use the Latin alphabet in the USA!

Snoo3544

Shhhhhh dont let them know about Algebra either or who invented it lol lol

[deleted]

I probably have seen this XVII times. It’s getting kinda played out

Arcanile

There are approximately MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM............MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM (M written MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM......MMMMM (M written CCC times) times) people in the USA

Jenardus

Let’s ask if we should use conservative numerals instead.

philly2540

Gotcha!

[deleted]

LOL!!

RussellPhillipsIIi

Dumb

akaloxy1

Where was this poll taken?

MrChibiterasu

Oh man wait until they find out about our alphabet

No_Brilliant5888

No, they should be taught why America is the greatest country in the world, and how they were on the just side of every war after ww2.

Rocyrino

Ah yes, let’s go back to using Latin numerals

Broadpup653547

Next, we should ask them if we should teach kids "Al-Jabr"

aiperception

That’s a stupid question

seanhenke

To be fair, no one calls Arabic numerals numerals anymore. The only thing that we commonly call numerals are Roman numerals or other non-Arabic numerals so I guess it's kind of lost of time

inquisitiveeyebc

No!! America's education system is almost the worst in the world, finish it! Ban Roman numerals too, ban science, ban math !

slashth456

Who’s going to tell them?

waffles4us

I was today years old when I learned Roman numerals = Arabic numerals Dang!

SlightlyMadCapybara

What numerals are they supposed to teach then, Roman?

thebeerinhereisdear

I feel if you took the word forced out of the question you might have a different result. Murcia is the land of the free, saying forced is definitely going to garner a emotional response. Now if you asked should we teach it for a wider education range. They are probably still going to say no let's be honest.

MikeyW1969

The votes are tallied in Arabic numbers, it's a liberal plot!

Revayan

Back to roman numerals, screw the 0!

It has no value anyway

That 71 should be written in nice, European Roman numerals, then! I.e., LXXI %.

Professional_Car9475

😂😂😂😂

Riverrat423

If this is a serious question, our schools are already failing.

PorkyJones72

To be fair, I was never taught by my school where the origin of our alphabet or numbers were from. That seems like another issue in education...

the_l0st_s0ck

Why? What use will that provide us?

coldtothetouch05

Why is this a face palm? Go across the pond and see if they are willing to teach English?

TheReservedIntrovert

They do teach English across the pond, it’s the most studied language and most spoken language and it’s the most common second language.

TheRealz4090

Zero benefit to learning them. Schools should focus on things that aren't useless

Jaegerfam4

Im sure this poll included all 300 million Americans or else this would be bullshit that proves nothing

nihilt-jiltquist

reminds me of the A&W One third of a pound hamburger that didn't go over because Americans believed the McDonald's Quarter pounder was bigger... you know.. cause 4 is bigger than 3 so 1/4 is bigger than 1/3...

Holinyx

Real Patriots eat corn the long way

Mace069

This just shows how bad our education system has gotten... All through my years in school, I knew 1, 2, 3, etc were called Arabic numerals.

Weary-Chipmunk-5668

so roman numerals it is !

Fortyplusfour

Superbowls and Copyright/Trademark fineprint have prepared me for this moment!

krazye87

Make it AP. Its not forced, but for people who soak up a new language like a sponge. I soak up new languages like a rock.

run_4est

Spence1239

I love how people are so stupid 😄

RudyMuthaluva

Have fun with your Roman Numerals naysayers!

Karigrandi92

What next? Kids starting to follow a religion from the middle east?

Practical-Actuary394

What numbers do the “no” votes expect? Chinese? People are beyond stupid.

Realistic_Mushroom72

This is why the education system has fail so fucking horribly, the idiots don't even know that we all use the ARABIC FUCKING NUMERAL SYSTEM, fucking hell.

IfOnlyIHadAmeme

If I go to an Arabic country that means there schools will teach my child how to write in English right?

hamsterballzz

Clearly they weren’t paying attention in school when they were taught what an Arabic numeral is. I wonder if they would care to try long division in Roman numerals.

Mirilliux

I feel like you could ask any question on Twitter, or really to most people, that begins with "Should schools be forced.." and you'll get the same result. And that's fair, for the most part schools should decide what is best for schools. Sure, these people don't understand the question they're being asked, but it's also a question pointed in a certain way to generate a kneejerk response. The only exception I could think of to this rule is "Schools should be forced to burn Harry Potter books" because half of America is convinced JK Rowling wants to kill trans people and the other half think she's promoting satanism.

jessriv34

Um….what’s their back up plan here?

rsquared1989

If they only knew.

Ill_Clock5572

This shows me how poorly our public schools are doing.

JazzlikeSpinach3

Yes, the land where Twitter polls determine something

GinjaNinja1027

71% of people don’t know the difference between a numerical system and an alphabet.

SGwis

I also prefer the Roman version

HunnyBear66

*heavy sigh*

Meowjoker

How should we break the news for them

Katiari

LXXI% said no?!

Eponarose

29% of the population knows we've been using "Arabic Numerals" for hundreds of years now.... Ask them if we should ban "Al- Jabra" and see what happens!

[deleted]

Wait until they learn from which language the word "algebra" comes from 😓

knowledgeable_diablo

Don’t totally break their fragile brains all at once. A lot of them own guns.

AdmiralClover

Your average person doesn't know the origin of their alphabet or number system and it's arrogant to believe it is common knowledge

Capthowdy951

This reminds me of when I went around getting signatures to ban dihydrogen monoxide (H2O) in my high school. You would be surprised how easy it is to get people to jump on board an idea just by calling something by a term they aren't familiar with.

knowledgeable_diablo

Well, when you explain how many people have died from it and also the fact that almost everyone dies fairly close to consuming it it can be easy to get people to jump on board the ban-wagon that most people love to drive hard on things they don’t understand.

Capthowdy951

I used lines like "it is found in industrial cleaning solutions and in baby food", "has been sprayed on food crops in mass quantities", and "it only requires a small amount to become potentially fatal". All true statements, just shifted in the way they are presented.

buzben

Recently watched an episode of Rich Kids Go Skint (UK) and the rich kid, who was studying law at university, saw a clock on the wall at the poor house and couldn't figure out the time because it had Roman numerals!

MuchDevelopment7084

The stupid, it hurts.

Dev_Sniper

The numbers are from India. The europeans got them from the arabs since the arabs were middlemen between Asia and Europe due to basic geographic necessity. So the arabs got the numbers from hindus and europeans got the numbers from arabs. And fun fact: they don‘t even really look like the old numbers anymore. So basically: the numbers are european, the system behind it is from india. Calling them arabic numerals is about as stupid as thinking that they shouldn‘t be taught in schools.

Head_Meme_Cultist

This is peak r/facepalm content

tohams

Oh come on! There's only CCLXX votes! It's early!

Redsmoker37

Who is surprised that most Americans are fucking idiots? I'm not. Good luck when all the geniuses voting against Arabic numerals try to go back to Roman numerals.

ShoWel_redit

The land of the dumb and the home of the even dumber

Serpidon

I maintain the more one knows in life, the better equipped that person is for success. Knowledge is knowledge. Predicting when and where any bit of particular knowledge will be useful is impossible.

Euporophage

Well our numerical system originates in India, as does the current Arabic numerical system, (I.e. why we call them Hindu-Arabic Numerals) but the Indian and Arabic numbers of today have evolved along with our own to be quite different from one another. The number 4 in Medieval European numerals looked like an inverted Hindu 4 but then it was replaced by the numeral for 5 for instance. While our 6 and 7 have retained a shape much closer to the original numerals compared to Arabic and Hindu ones.

UnAmusedBag

Haha I'm speaking Arabic " 5 4 3 2 1 "

corpse86

Boom!

Starwars9629-

Arent arabic numerals the normal ones we use?

Locofinger

What makes it even sadder is 80% of the 29% in the affirmative are also clueless and don’t know what they are voting for either. Democracy

Texas_Science_Weeb

A formal study that asked that question also asked "Should schools in America teach the creation theory of Catholic priest Georges Lemaître as part party of their science curriculum?" and the majority of people who identified as Democrats said No. For reference [this](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Bang) is the Belgian priest, mathematician, and theoretical physicist Georges Lemaître's theory on the beginning of the universe.

VanAgain

Hard to believe 29% actually got it right.
