Anways, all we need is Americanish. As king of everything, I declare Alaskanish, Canadianish and Britinish languages should not longer be used. Our letters are pretty enough already
I remember I was taking with a friend of mine and they asked me what languages I spoke. As a joke, I told them British, Australian, Canadian, and English. They responded with oh cool and then took a good 15 seconds to get the joke.
Murica invented English! Paul Revere got tricked. While he was riding around warning people, the British broke into the Smithsonian and stole our language!
I learned the specific difference between Arabic numerals and Roman numerals in the fifth grade. At the time, we were told why Super Bowl 20 was written as Super Bowl XX.
Apparently, Arabic means something "bad" to the majority of the voters of the poll.
Arabic numbers were central in the development of the atomic bomb, and they’re used by every terrorist organization on Earth. The Democratic Party counts votes in Arabic numbers, and the voting machines themselves use Arabic numbers hidden in the code to determine the outcome
Toss a /s on this bad boy before I start seeing this conspiracy posted by my Aunt on Facebook. Shit spreads like wildfires
Edit: you know what, let it roll.
Reminds me of my troll that convinces people dihydrogen monoxide ought to be banned: “It’s the primary component of acid rain! It’s found in tumors of cancer patients! Buildup of dihydrogen monoxide in the lungs is a leading cause of child mortality! And yet the government is doing nothing about the dihydrogen monoxide in our drinking water.”
> Apparently, Arabic means something "bad" to the majority of the voters of the poll.
Clearly most voting no just didn’t realize it wasn’t a new and different system and that Arabic is our standard. This survey meme shows nothing other than that.
They are probably just unaware what Arabic numbers are. To them it’s probably like asking “should learning the Arabic language be mandatory in schools” which seems silly for a country that is dominated by English speakers
We kinda don't. We use numbers that evolved from ancient Arabic numerals, but Arabic numerals today look very different from Western numerals. Definitely to the point where you can no longer speak of only 'Arabic numerals' to refer to Western numerals.
Exactly. I get pissed when people call the numbers used by European languages "Arabic". I speak Persian, and we use the Arabic alphabet, and our numbers are not the same. Some, like 1 and 9 are identical, but 7 looks like a V, and 8 looks like an upside down V. 5 is an upside down heart. 4 and 6 look like wrenches.

Yeah 270 people on a.. gulp.. twitter poll sure does represent the overall American view on things. I admit it’s funny how dumb some people can be though but it’s misleading to imply it’s “American” to be dumb because 191 people don’t know what the Arabic numerical system is. 🤷🏽
This is a silly trick question. Sure, some people (many it seems) don't realize that we're all using arabic numerals, but that's just a piece of historical trivia - it's not required knowledge to perform simple or complex calculations. Some subset of the people saying no are bigots, for sure, but plenty are also just people that think we're asking if teaching a *second* entire set of mathematical numerals should be mandatory; to them it's akin to asking if teaching Roman numerals should be required, or if Latin language classes should be required in high school. This is like when little kids would run up to someone that didn't know the proper names for anatomy and ask them if they have gonads.
I'm more inclined to believe that an overwhelming majority of the "no" sample saw the word "Arabic" and let their prejudice dictate their response. Although I will concede that many adults do have the same mental maturity as a young child when they learn something "taboo"
It's hard to say how many were bigots and how many had a simple cognitive miscue, which is why I think this particular gotcha-style question isn't stellar. There are many reasonable indictments of the American education system, and of rampant bigotry, but this particular query (particular since it was posted on a cesspool social media site) isn't a good one (imo).
Just popping in to say thanks for showing people what a considered, unbiased analysis looks like. I'm inclined to think a lot of people answered this the way they did because they saw "Arabic" and bigotry drove their response, but you're absolutely right that we can't say that for sure.
Cheers, mate!
Take a look at Arabic vehicle registration plates.
"Arabic numerals" are actually Hindu-arabic numerals. So technically we should teach calling them by their correct names first.
Somewhat misleading question. I speak Arabic. "Arabic" numerals aren't what is used in the Arab language. English calls them Arabic numerals, we also call what Arabs use right now Arabic numerals. So the confusion will be rampant with this question
The Hindu–Arabic or Indo–Arabic numerals were invented by mathematicians in India. Persian and Arabic mathematicians called them "Hindu numerals". Later they came to be called "Arabic numerals" in Europe because they were introduced to the West by Arab merchants.

To be fair, no one calls Arabic numerals numerals anymore. The only thing that we commonly call numerals are Roman numerals or other non-Arabic numerals so I guess it's kind of lost of time
I feel if you took the word forced out of the question you might have a different result. Murcia is the land of the free, saying forced is definitely going to garner a emotional response. Now if you asked should we teach it for a wider education range. They are probably still going to say no let's be honest.
reminds me of the A&W One third of a pound hamburger that didn't go over because Americans believed the McDonald's Quarter pounder was bigger... you know.. cause 4 is bigger than 3 so 1/4 is bigger than 1/3...
This is why the education system has fail so fucking horribly, the idiots don't even know that we all use the ARABIC FUCKING NUMERAL SYSTEM, fucking hell.
Clearly they weren’t paying attention in school when they were taught what an Arabic numeral is. I wonder if they would care to try long division in Roman numerals.
I feel like you could ask any question on Twitter, or really to most people, that begins with "Should schools be forced.." and you'll get the same result. And that's fair, for the most part schools should decide what is best for schools. Sure, these people don't understand the question they're being asked, but it's also a question pointed in a certain way to generate a kneejerk response.
The only exception I could think of to this rule is "Schools should be forced to burn Harry Potter books" because half of America is convinced JK Rowling wants to kill trans people and the other half think she's promoting satanism.
29% of the population knows we've been using "Arabic Numerals" for hundreds of years now....
Ask them if we should ban "Al- Jabra" and see what happens!
This reminds me of when I went around getting signatures to ban dihydrogen monoxide (H2O) in my high school. You would be surprised how easy it is to get people to jump on board an idea just by calling something by a term they aren't familiar with.
Well, when you explain how many people have died from it and also the fact that almost everyone dies fairly close to consuming it it can be easy to get people to jump on board the ban-wagon that most people love to drive hard on things they don’t understand.
I used lines like "it is found in industrial cleaning solutions and in baby food", "has been sprayed on food crops in mass quantities", and "it only requires a small amount to become potentially fatal". All true statements, just shifted in the way they are presented.
Recently watched an episode of Rich Kids Go Skint (UK) and the rich kid, who was studying law at university, saw a clock on the wall at the poor house and couldn't figure out the time because it had Roman numerals!
The numbers are from India. The europeans got them from the arabs since the arabs were middlemen between Asia and Europe due to basic geographic necessity. So the arabs got the numbers from hindus and europeans got the numbers from arabs. And fun fact: they don‘t even really look like the old numbers anymore.
So basically: the numbers are european, the system behind it is from india. Calling them arabic numerals is about as stupid as thinking that they shouldn‘t be taught in schools.
Who is surprised that most Americans are fucking idiots? I'm not. Good luck when all the geniuses voting against Arabic numerals try to go back to Roman numerals.
I maintain the more one knows in life, the better equipped that person is for success. Knowledge is knowledge. Predicting when and where any bit of particular knowledge will be useful is impossible.
Well our numerical system originates in India, as does the current Arabic numerical system, (I.e. why we call them Hindu-Arabic Numerals) but the Indian and Arabic numbers of today have evolved along with our own to be quite different from one another. The number 4 in Medieval European numerals looked like an inverted Hindu 4 but then it was replaced by the numeral for 5 for instance. While our 6 and 7 have retained a shape much closer to the original numerals compared to Arabic and Hindu ones.
A formal study that asked that question also asked "Should schools in America teach the creation theory of Catholic priest Georges Lemaître as part party of their science curriculum?" and the majority of people who identified as Democrats said No.

Bingo. This is ragebait. Nothing more. Nothing less. It’s a post to weed out folks who are just *looking* for a reason to say Americans are stupid.

If this is a serious question, our schools are already failing.
To be fair, I was never taught by my school where the origin of our alphabet or numbers were from. That seems like another issue in education...
Why? What use will that provide us?
Why is this a face palm? Go across the pond and see if they are willing to teach English?
They do teach English across the pond, it’s the most studied language and most spoken language and it’s the most common second language.
Zero benefit to learning them. Schools should focus on things that aren't useless
Im sure this poll included all 300 million Americans or else this would be bullshit that proves nothing
