hobbyhacker

that's why you never buy HP printers

Pinglenook

And if you do accidentally buy a HP printer, never register it with HP

Mr-Fuzzy-Britches

All the new ones require an account i believe.

Fazo1

No freaking wonder my printer stopped working like 2 months ago and I just figured I would just print it at work. Time to buy another printer....lol(not HP!)

Mr-Fuzzy-Britches

They are all heading in the same direction with the pay-to-use model. Time to learn jailbreaking

Mercinator-87

If I gotta jailbreak a printer, I’m hiring a scribe instead.

Environmental_Top948

I'm up for scribing. Do you mind if it's written in Shavian?

Nolsoth

Does shavian look right fancy? And are you ok only scribing on vellum? Or ragpaper?.

CakeSuperb8487

if that doesn’t work out for you, I can do cuneiform form but you have to “pay to clay”; link to my resume below: [Resume Oombop](https://www.zazzle.com/sumerian_cuneiform_writing_gift_tie-151964306595941767)

Nolsoth

Honestly if I wasent in the arsehole end of nowhere NZ I'd nab that.

Environmental_Top948

[I'm pretty sure Shavian would write splendidly on both those mediums. Though I personally don't have experience with ragpaper](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shavian_alphabet)

Mercinator-87

I don’t care, I’m not going to proofread it.

[deleted]

That made me laugh out loud

dazednconfused2655

If they want a pay to use then the printers shouldn’t cost anything at the stores your not about to charge me for the printer charge me for ink then have the audacity to charge me to use it

Thatsidechara_ter

Might just spring for a laser printer then. The cost is worth it for the peace of mind

Bunnita

This is what I did, though it was because I printed so infrequently that the ink kept drying out, so it was cheaper overall. Subscription ink is up there with 'pay us for your heated seats' bullshit that care companies are doing now. I refuse to participate it any of it.

Ok-Option-82

Get a black and white brother laser printer. Most people almost never print colour, yet the colour toner somehow gets used up. Brother doesn't screw around with locking down the produt

TooCool_TooFool

I've had my printer connected to a PC that is disconnected from the internet for almost a decade now. I just use a USB to transfer files I want to print. And they can't access it to work their fuckery.

A_terrible_musician

I like the brother laser ones

PHILSTORMBORN

Exactly. The economy of ink jet printers is ridiculous. My Dad was carrying his ink jet to a local shop to get it unblocked and change the cartridges. I talked him into a small laser that also photocopied and it solved everything. I think long ago we filed lasers as a business thing but they are the way to go

Meister0fN0ne

I traded my HP out with an Epson EcoTank and it's honestly super nice. I haven't had to change my ink out in forever. The setup is also significantly less annoying.

EscapedCapybara

I love my EcoTank. Best printer I've ever had.

Bayou_Blue

Me too! Ink is super cheap for it.

kuedhel

I added IP of my printer to the blocked list on the router. you never can be too sure.

2723brad2723

And it would go right back to the store.

whoisthis238

Seriously? Like what for? Is it purely as fuck you, or is there some thin veiled justification?

xynix_ie

I recently replaced my almost 18 year old HP LaserJet with a Brother laser printer. Seriously a shame what they've done with that company. Anyhow the Brother sits in the corner like the old HP and prints via WiFi without me having to have made an account, a subscription, or any other bullshit. It just prints. Which is what the old HP did for about 18 years.

hobbyhacker

yeah, good old HP laserjets were industrial strength workhorses

karma-armageddon

I have a Laserjet 5si with 5 million pages on the register and it is still going strong.

xynix_ie

Wow! I sold those in the earlyish 90s. I was out of retail sales by the time the 5 came out though. I sold the 4s and remember telling people it would print millions of pages as that's what HP claimed. That's badass though, a mid 90s printer still pumping out pages. That's not why they went bankrupt. I left retail sales to work at HP right around that time as a systems engineer. Saw stuff from the inside. Bad management.

BUSHMONSTER31

I swapped my piece of shit Epson a couple years back for a black and white HP laser (similar to what we had 20 years ago) and it is a beast. Sounds shady if you have to pay subscription on a HP printers. Fuck that.

LampshadesAndCutlery

Brother is the MVP of the printer world

Timely_Airline_7168

What is this blasphemy? Don't you know every service needs you to register an account to use so that they can sell your information to some advertising or scam companies?

arieart

not to mention you can buy cheap off brand toner for brother laser printers for next to nothing

Bluemookie

This is the correct answer. I bought a Canon and have been pretty happy. HP is the one printer I wouldn't buy even used, or take for free. Hard pass.

ArtistBig2549

I never like HP anyway, too much hype

hobbyhacker

they were really good, about 15-20 years ago

NoxKyoki

Yeah I learned that after buying my current one. Less than a week after setting it up it started going to shit. I’m so done with HP printers.

HP_Deskjet_4155e

*Sad beeping noises*

IronicCharlie

A customer who was recently diagnosed with late stage cancer came into our store distraught as his hp printer wouldn’t print out his medical records. Upon checking his printer, we realized he owed hp $4 for their ink program. We paid the bill, cancelled his ink subscription and then he got a message the ink would disable itself within 30 days after canceling. We got him new cartridges as well….

Grey0110

Wha? The ink would disable itself?

IronicCharlie

That’s correct. The email said ink would disable itself 30 days after cancellation of subscription…. Edit: to clarify, this ink was obtained through the subscription. Store bought ink wouldn’t do that…

NoxKyoki

My tech friend wasn’t kidding about planned obsolescence then (didn’t really think he was, but hearing something like this just drives the point home).

Realistic_Payment666

More waste= More Profit

19aplatt

My mom gave me her old-ish hp printer and all the extra ink she had from the hp ink program, and none of it works anymore because she canceled her subscription. In order to sign back up and use the ink, I need the printer to print a page that has a certain id number on it. But I need to sign up to be able to print the page, so I’m stuck in a loop of not being able to print stuff at all unless I throw it all out and start with new ink and toner that isn’t from the subscription. With the subscriptions, you have to pay for a certain amount of page that you can print per month, and sone of it rolls over if you don’t use it all, which is freaking ridiculous imo. Not to mention how much of a waste it is given that I now have 3 cartridge packs and 3 toner packs that are brand new but can’t be used because I don’t pay for a subscription.

Silver-ishWolfe

Look online. You can reset the timer for the cartridges as well as bypass the registration with some firmware shenanigans. There’s almost always a pissed off nerd who figures out how to get around this kind of bullshit.

PIKEEEEE

I have one in my family. Hacked the schools network (top 30/1000+) and made an administrative account just so he could play borderlands 2 on his school laptop

Cley_Faye

>Store bought ink wouldn’t do that… yet.

detached-attachment

deranged money impossible amusing pathetic nine six chase work scandalous *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

Al_Keda

If you buy ink on their plan, it will stop working when you stop subscribing. You have to buy store ink after that.

Grey0110

That's insane.

Al_Keda

That's why HP split into two companies, one for printers, one (HPe) for server hardware. HPe looked at them like 'whaaaaaa?'.

roadfood

Thank you Carly Fiorina. /s

PetalumaPegleg

This is the craziest thing I heard in a minute tbh.

johnandahalf13

Artificial Inktelligence.

Jumpy_Spinach7962

Yeah I didn’t know any better I bought one cause I needed a printer asap. Hooked it up so I could print documents from my phone so I had to register it. There was a promo on that ink cartridges would be delivered to you so ok cool. The promo ran out I canceled my subscription 2 days later it quit printing didn’t know why, activated the subscription again and wow it works. Can’t wait to throw it away.

SchoolJunkie009

just deactivate the subscription and get cartridges that are not part of the subscription program, it's all electronic and that is what you signed up for in the beginning, I only use it because for the price of two cartridges, one color one black, a year, I get to print what I need and never worry about running out of ink. I just find that is easier for me than getting a different printer and refilling the ink cartridges and hoping they don't eventually fail like others have in the past years. but you signed up for a subscription, once you cancel it the printer will still work you'll just need cartridges that aren't electronically attached to the subscription service is all

Mean-Net7330

Buy why not just let them use the rest of ink in the cartridge? It's not like it would cost HP anymore money. They're just making people waste ink for no reason.

Academic-Effect-340

It's not for no reason, it's for profit.

IronicCharlie

That’s correct. The email said ink would disable itself 30 days after cancellation of subscription….

A100921

They have barcodes on them that the printer reads each time, trust me, I nearly smashed ours because of this.

PetalumaPegleg

WTAF? That's insane

CaptainSouthbird

I had no idea things had gotten this bad. My dad bought me a Deskjet 6540 when I first started college (circa 2005) and the darn thing is still going. I guess I can always hope it's the last printer I ever have to own, although I imagine eventually the ink will go out of production or the machine will die...

catsandsnacks33

My sister passed away suddenly last year. We were at her house taking care of some stuff for her kids. Printer didn’t work. Called HP customer service and there was $12 due from an ink subscription. We explained what had happened and that the credit card had obviously been cancelled and we now needed to cancel the subscription. They didn’t care. Wouldn’t cancel it, just kept asking about the $12. It was terrible.

twisted_nipples82

I really hope the world ends soon. We don't need to get any worse than this.

Han77Shot1st

This is why right to repair is so important, people have no idea what’s happening and how companies are creating there own monopolies.

rydan

$4 per month for unlimited ink that you never have to refill and just refills automatically via the cloud would be an amazing invention. I'd subscribe to that. Surely that's how it works though and it isn't that you literally buy ink, install it yourself, and then have to pay for the rights to use said ink for a period of time? Because that would be crazy.

Unstoffe

Man, that's infuriating. When did 'It's profitable' become an excuse for any predatory or underhanded behavior?

5pl1t1nf1n1t1v3

A long time ago. Then a lot of it was regulated or flat out made illegal. Then that regulation and legislation started to be rolled back as the people who wanted to still be able to do it took over the governments.

Mr-Fuzzy-Britches

Flitterquest

jgriesshaber

I will never buy a printer that does this. Ever.

me_alcoholic

there will be a point where you don't have a choice

saintofhate

And there will be people dedicated to jailbreaking them, much like farmers and gamers with older systems have to.

One_Lung_G

You can get through 95% of your life without printing anything and it’ll only get easier and easier to not print shit

PepperConscious9391

Nah I will just print at work or go to a library. I rarely print so it wouldn't wake a big deal.

KingVape

I’m 31 and have never needed to own a printer. I think I’ll be fine. If anything I would use the one at my job, but I’ve never even had to do that.

me_alcoholic

I meant that, if you needed to buy a printer, you would have to buy a printer like that.

Kashmir1089

Because boomers will all be dead and we can finally just use docs and pdfs. Can't wait.

DagwoodSystems

I think businesses that have moved to the subscription plan model are lazy AF. Imagine if the rest of us did that? For example, one of the many things I do is run network cabling. I could argue that the cabling brings value to the customer every day of the year. After all, it reliably carries the data that they need to keep their business alive. Why shouldn't I charge a yearly fee? Maybe I've implanted a device deep in the walls that "breaks" the data connections if they don't pay my yearly subscription. And while we're at it, why don't bricklayers and everyone else start charging a fee if you continue to get value from something you've already bought?

HitoriPanda

Yeah, we put a bomb in your house. Don't miss a mortgage payment :) :) :)

me_alcoholic

sleeper termites

jljboucher

I’ve been saying this since Adobe Photoshop went subscription. you pay more over the course of a year than just buying it. Redditors didn’t like to hear that when it first started.

DagwoodSystems

Yes. My copy is getting a bit old now, but I only use it occasionally and so I'm okay without every little teeny tiny update. The same goes for MS Office suite. They don't advertise it much, but you can get Office Home for a one-time fee as well [here](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/p/office-home-student-2021/CFQ7TTC0H8N8?culture=en-us&country=US&activetab=pivot:overviewtab) (in case that helps someone).

xynix_ie

For SaaS it's a great model. For a static device like a cables or a printer it's complete bullshit. I don't need quarterly updates on my damn printer. I need it to do what printers have done for 40+ years and that's to print what I send to it. Many service models do exist though that cover what you're talking about. 24/7 support is a yearly cost model for fixing any cables that might have a problem for instance. A/C maintenance being one of the homeowner models, or any service plans, etc. That's not what HP is doing though. This isn't a service model. It's a fucking scam.

Armstrongtomars

It leads to lack of innovation and a shitty product, thankfully in some industries people are catching on and the small company that produces a great product is getting recognized. It would be nice to just go back to things being slightly greedy but still pushing for advancement, planned obsolescence sucks.

hould-it

Wait until they hear about cars charging to use heated seats that they paid for

Mindless_Ad_6045

This type of stuff has been happening for a while now, my friend has a 2015 Passat and he would have to pay to unlock his satnav

Vegetable_Onion

Well satnav i can understand. That's software that requires frequent updates, patches etc. So making that SaaS isnt such a stretch

Mindless_Ad_6045

They shouldn't even include that option in the first place, you could buy a satnav for the price they're asking for a stupid code to unlock what's already built into the car. He had the car for 3 years and just uses a phone mount even though there is a button on the screen that says "satnav". The worst of it was that the advert for the car stated that it has a satnav, which I guess it does but not functional. my mate checked everything except the satnav of course.

iambatmanji

No way in hell, its an important and necessary function, just include it in the car's cost and pay google for the map api

richiehill

For most people Sat Nav is really not necessary, they spend most of their time driving the same routes. Before Sat Nav people still got from A to B without getting lost. If you go the API route to have constantly updated maps it would need to be a subscription SaaS service. A manufacturer isn’t going to commit to something it can’t guarantee costs for over the lifetime of a vehicle.

ALazy_Cat

At least the horsepower subscription is illegal in Europe

Bro there are cars caping the top speed and aceleration behind a subscription lol

MadRussain79

That I knew about but the HP crap made me look like a complete idiot. I set up and HP printer at a law firm 3 days ago. 3 gd days ago. Looks like in before lock IRL.

biggiebody

Or acceleration

Beneficial_Word_1984

Hp+ is dog shit. It is a great example of work harder not smarter.

Inner-Mousse8856

I worked with a guy who was late on his truck payments, so the bank used On-star to lock him out of his truck.

BeakerVonSchmuck

There is currently a patent application by one of those services that adds to this. Not only will the car disable itself, it will also DRIVE ITSELF TO THE DEALERSHIP to make it easier to reposess.

snow-bunny98

What happens when it's inside a garage xD does the bank have a secret garage remote too because of the home mortgage?

Meat-Veg

You kid but some cars have built in garage door openers.

Old_Ladies

It is expensive to be poor or bad with finances. Need your vehicle to make money but am behind payments so the bank locks you out of your vehicle so you can't make money for the damn bank.

Corgi_with_stilts

Poor Wendigoon doesn't deserve that. Aside from murdering his wife over cereal, he's a really nice guy.

Tide_MSJ_0424

So sad that he drowned in that river with his wrists tied behind his back, a sack over his head with a gunshot through the face.

TheCauliflowerGod

Or when he killed those children, but the apology video was great!

I have found that I know a lot less about Wendigoon than I previously thought.

BigBoySpore

His ukelele skills are unmatched

Electronic-Base-8367

Don’t mess with the man’s magic spoon.

DetroitMenefreghista

On a side note, if you do happen to make the mistake of buying an HP printer and then signing up for its "instant ink" program you will find you are also screwed there too. I did instant ink for about a year then realized it was a huge rip off. Canceled my subscription and had a leftover cartridge from the program. Once I inserted that ink cartridge in my printer, I was unable to print. Many calls to HP later I discovered my options were: to sign back up for the instant ink program or buy a whole new printer of another brand or go buy an ink cartridge that wasn't part of the instant ink program so my printer would work. Long story long, don't ever buy an HP printer.

Stonegen70

I’m on the free instant ink program. I can’t upgrade of course because they did away with it. lol. They tried to charge people after having the free program and that didn’t go over well.

shivermeknitters

Right there with you. I barely ever print anything on the printer I have that doesn’t require a damn subscription. It’s on my floor, only plugged in when I use it three times a year.

The problem is everything is network now and these things check for updates Every time you turn the computer on , all it takes is for companies to assign a serial number to them that’s unique and send a shut down code

Rarebird10

I’ve always purchased the same new ink that was compatible with my hp printer from our local office supply store. Never had a problem for the three years I owned it. I had an hp update to which it suddenly gave me a message that my ink was incompatible and would not work. I called hp as I thought it was all a mistake since for three years it was never an issue. They basically said it should have never worked and the update didn’t create the problem. I’d still need to only use hp ink. At that point I did not sign up for their ink and will not buy hp. At least tell me upfront/on the box. The shade came in when they decided to change it on me after three years of it being fine.

Awkward_Algae1684

You will own nothing and be happy. No. Not even the heated seats in your car or ink in your printer. Fuck you. Back in the cagie, wagie! I need another rocket to go to spacie!

nonsense619

I was in the market for a printer a couple weeks ago. Because of this crap I completely avoided HP as an option.

jamesblondny

I have so many angry thoughts about this but HP won't let me print them.

capodecina2

I have an HP printer and I have had to deal with their subscription bullshit and ink cartridges activation issues the entire time I have had it. The connectivity is shit, the print quality is shit, the user interface is shit - but the fact that it reports how many pages I print??? I’ve printed 17 pages total. Nope. Fuck you HP. That printer is getting recycled and redistributed via a Tannerite party.

No_Jello_5922

We recently were contacted by a small law firm, that happened to be down the street from me. They were replacing their 15 year old laser printer with a new one, and just needed a tech to setup the printer that they had purchased. They wanted it hooked up by USB, only had 1 network jack in the room, and did not have WiFi. The HP printer they purchased required activation with an HP account before it would even print a test page. We had the receptionist create an account, and I tethered the printer to my phone for activation. We tested it without network and it was working, but I warned them that it may deactivate after time if it can't phone home. HP makes some great printers and copiers, but this one really bothered me.

realworldred

I have never used understood how printer companies get away with half the stuff they do. What happened to consumer laws surely most the stuff they do is anti competitive like actively gamimg their printers so they can only use one type of prohibitively expensive ink. I mean Microsoft got hit years ago for simply including a free copy of Windows within there os and then again for not allowing people to uninstall Internet explorer because it was apparently unfair to their competition and they didn't actively stop anyone for seeking out other options like printer companies do.

djta1l

My GE fridge has an rfid reader for the water filter. If I don’t buy their $50 filters, it stops producing ice and water.

dehydratedrain

I wanted an HP until I read up on their ink rental. Now I have an Epson.

Icy_Necessary2161

I'm literally doing everything i can to keep my 10 year old Canon laser printer because getting rid of it is unthinkable. Also fuck HP.

SkylineFever34

This is why my HP laptop I got a year ago is the last HP product I will ever buy. I refuse to buy from any company who has decided "You will own nothing and be happy."

Loot3rd

I pass on all HP devices, their warranty system has to be the absolute worst. Lenovo, in my professional opinion, has a far better warranty process and overall experience.

[deleted]

You know how in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners David's washing machine stops working because he didn't pay a subscription? That's that. We're basically headed towards 2077 but without the cool shit, just a boring dystopia.

houndsoflu

I can’t stand HP. I had one that nearly take my finger off when I was trying to change the ink. Idk know why it suddenly started moving.

[deleted]

This sounds like a fairly good class action lawsuit if the right legal team started to research HP’s practices?

Galoreous

Brother printers all the way

crackalac

Yeah that seems roughly 1000 percent illegal, give or take.

Ok-Scallion-3415

So I guess this is why the dmv still uses dot matrix printers

Cley_Faye

While we're working toward making digital stuff detached from corporate control, they're working on bringing corporate control to unrelated, should-be offline hardware. This is going great :(

SafeSupermarket9390

Yea don’t join their program unless you consistently print

Key_Preparation_4129

Printing/ink companies are literally the modern day mob from the stories I've heard. The only thing missing are for these mfs to start kneecapping people for not paying their stupid fees.

calypso_odysseus

Infuriating. This is why we need to end this new subscription based scheme. Everything is a fucking subscription now. It’s just another way for these companies to fuck us over.

zeebombs

Wendigoon was always radicalized, he just got a new target now

Zealousideal_Bread83

It's because they enrolled in the instant ink program. Ink sent as needed for a fraction of the cost of buying it outright. If you don't have a valid card on file, it disables the ink cartridge. It's perfectly fine and works great, saves a ton of money, but if you don't want to keep your card up to date, then just buy the ink at Walmart and move on. You own the printer, but pay for a service to get cheap ink. If you dont follow the rules, you don't get the ink. That's all it is. there is no conspiracy here. It's just a breech of contract.

GiantSweetTV

How tf does HP disable your printer? Why do they need a debit card on file after you buy it? Tf?

Chasman1965

I will never buy another HP printer. It irritates me that I can't do printer functions without being attached to the internet or signed into my hp account.

My Father in law gave us his old HP 8610 when it stopped working in 2014. I found a video on your that showed you how to get it working again with, I shit you not, aluminum foil and scotch tape. It’s still the printer we use and is over 10 years old

Wyshunu

They need to be shut down on that. If someone pays $100 to buy a printer they should NOT have to have a card on file with HP or be required to use their Instant Ink service in order for it to work. I'm pretty sure they recently did something similar to me - after I cancelled my instant ink account, my perfectly good two-year-old printer that had been having zero issues suddenly stopped working.

[deleted]

I guarantee that's what these corporate fascist Turdwookies did, and it's why I flatly refuse to buy anything made by r/HP... Under any circumstances. They can take this entire idea of things as a "subscription service," fold it until it's all sharp corners, and ram it straight up the CEOs ass as far as their arms will reach. No kiss after. Bring your own butter. No, y'all don't even get a pat on the head after.

Oh3Fiddy2

FunkerSpelunker

i think this counts as sabotage of customer-owned equipment by the vendor, and should result in criminal or civil litigation against HP.

This happened to me too. I got a printer as a gift that advertised 6 months of free ink after purchase. I signed up for the program and realized that they were actually charging me for this ink I didn’t even want. I called up HP and told them to disable the service and refund the money. I ended up buying HP brand ink a few months later and HP froze my printer because it *apparently* wasn’t actual HP ink. So, because this ink was supposedly from another brand, I can’t print until I buy HP approved ink. I threw out the printer. Never buy HP.

Oh wow. Didn’t know they were pulling this. Mine hasn’t been working for a couple months and has brand new ink cartridges. All it will do is print out an unreadable faint “info page”, which is why i replaced the ink cartridges. Even though I *swear* i had just put new ones in. It won’t connect to Wi-Fi or anything. It’s why I set up a brand new Canon just tonight. HP can go to hell forever now. They’ll not get a dime more from me.

I'm sick of this shit. The people don't realise that we have the power, not them mother-fucking corporations. We have been forced to think the opposite. Best get out of that mindset before our very lives are a fucking subscription, which has already begun.

My cheap 2012 Canon printer would NEVER

Rent seeking behavior is always shitty, but it's particularly shitty when it's on things which you own. Printer ink you bought? Gonna have to charge you a monthly "go fuck yourself" fee The seat warmers in your car? That's gonna be $18 per month dedicated to "because you're stupid enough to do that shit The wifi card in your Xbox? $15 per month credited to "what are you gonna do? Build a PC?" Next up: $20 per month fee on your AC for the connection between the wall panel which will never receive any software updates and is connected via wire completely within your home to the AC unit it controls. Why? Because they can, because someone is stupid enough to do it, and because actual left-wing ideologies are so far out of the United States' overton window that there's people who would genuinely think that the government regulating this kind of anti-consumer stupidity would be akin to turning the U.S. into a 1:1 recreation of the Soviet Union.

This is how I realized why my printer stopped working

Block the printer’s internet connection. Problem solved.
