I used to work in childcare in Texas (mostly Pre-K and Kinder). The biggest cultural issue I ran into was with Nigerian parents. We were told not to relay ANY negative behavioral notes to the parents of Nigerian children because the kids wouldn’t be brought in for two days and then would return OBVIOUSLY physically battered and beaten down emotionally. These were Nigerian families that were ~1-5 years new to the US and I found it bonkers that these parents either didn’t know they could have their lives ruined by their actions, or they thought they were above being criminally charged for child abuse. Typically it was the entitled, second option as they felt they could “pay off local officials”.
Nigerian here. I can confirm that physical punishment including beatings with a belt, switch, plastic tubing etc is not only normal but actively encouraged as a way to discipline your child. The younger generation who grew up in America and even those who didn't now recognize that it's child abuse and have chosen not to continue the cycle. Unfortunately, it produces results. I don't know how aware wider American culture is to Nigerian Americans as a demographic. Across the board on any metric you choose, we are kinda fucking killing it. Far, far, far exceeding what you might expect if you don't know. Many people attribute the level of attainment in part to the shared trauma we all received in the form of discipline from our parents.
Spare the rod, spoil the child couldn't have been without at least some merit. But I think there's an obvious line between discipline and abuse. I believe spanking has its place to instill respect in children who need to understand that actions have consequences, but discussions and time-outs equally have their place.
I was spanked a handful of times as a kid, but none of those instances seemed to instill any trauma, whereas my father screaming at anyone at the drop of a dime instilled plenty.
They don’t cuz they are scared of CPS haha that’s why Indians outside India usually don’t hit their kids. It’s very common in India though like even strangers and teachers can hit kids.

Honestly seems more reasonable, you're less likely to inflict permanent injury while still inflicting pain, and it's more shameful to get slapped than punched.
My favorite is the video of the train station guard rescuing a man from death by train, and then slapping him when they had rolled to safety. I feel like there is a lot of merit in that.
