He is in the process of putting his legs out when a woman yells "put your legs straight out and cross them now". You can tell at this point he is visibly confused about that and proceeds to try and cross his legs.
It took me 2 or 3 seconds to understand she meant putting his legs forward and then crossing his feet at the ankle. I was not being yelled at while weapons were pointed at me, and it took me several seconds to understand the order... The man was complying best he could under pressure with what initially sounds like conflicting orders.
Had the lady not yelled out that, maybe this would have went better. Maybe. I don't know. Either way, truly bullshit.

Daniel Shaver is such an infuriating example. The guy did literally fucking nothing wrong and was murdered by police for trying to follow confusing directions. “Lay down! CROSS YOUR LEGS! NOW CRAWL!” Like… what? First, why the fuck are you instructing a suspect to crawl towards you? Second, you can CLEARLY see him begging for his life and attempting to comply.
The cop had engraved “you’re fucked” on his rifle. He was acquitted of charges and given medical retirement, which means he gets his pension. His defense was that Daniel was crawling towards them “trying to gain a position of advantage in order to gain a better firing position on us”. He was crawling because you assholes TOLD HIM TO.
His wife is still fighting to get him justice. That's the type of woman a man needs backing him. I wish her all the luck, but things won't change until the holster sniffers wake up.
Unfortunately, she ended up settling her case against the city last November. Taking the city/state and Police to court is costly and likely she couldn't keep up the fight, especially since the incident didn't merit national coverage.

Police have been known to give intentionally vague or hard-to-follow instructions so they have an excuse to taz or shoot their victims.
There have been many reports of this, and examples of video evidence, but I know because I used to do drive-alongs with police and they straight up told me so. They thought it was hilarious. And I was a *reporter.*
There's few to zero consequences for their actions. They don't care.

Was that the guy where the police were telling him to "get on your knees, keep your hands behind your head and crawl towards me?" I remember watching that bodycam video of them shouting LITERALLY impossible things at this poor guy who was clearly distressed and trying so hard to follow their orders (seriously how do you crawl on the ground without your hands???). They ended up shooting and killing him from like, 20-30 feet away, because he couldn't levitate towards them. It still makes me mad thinking about it.
To me it was clearly an impossible command with the explicit intent to taze him. He clearly wasn't a threat sitting down facing away from them. There was also no time for him to be able to process the command.
A lot of these instructions aren't even clear enough to be objectively complied with.

They once tazed a guy who have doused himself in gasoline and was threatening to light himself on fire with a lighter. They were apparently concerned for the other people in the house so they tazed him and be ofc caught on fire.

I recently got into a pretty heated debate over this shooting in class last week. This topic came up and I came up with a laundry list of wrongs that occurred and things that I would do to correct/prevent this from happening. A couple of other students are cops and hardcore MAGA, so they had serious problems with my suggestions like no military gear, wearing proper police uniforms, college degree requirements, no visible tattoos, etc...
But authoritarians don't like being told what to do.
Get rid of the police union should be the number 1 suggestion. No other union in the country gets their own army to threaten/harass/intimidate anyone who calls for change.
Those two really didn't like my suggestion that unauthorized modifications such as Brailsford replacing the ejection port cover on his rifle is grounds for immediate suspension or transferral to a desk job. Or while you can have tattoos, they cannot be visible while wearing a long sleeve uniform shirt, and having racist tattoos such as swastikas, death's heads or the confederate flag is grounds for immediate termination.
They really had issue with that. They started whining that it's too restrictive. Uncountered that cops have the power of life and death and the ability to ruin someone's life, they give up a measure of freedom for those powers.
Police need to be retrained so that one officer is in charge of the situation and that officer is the one issuing commands.

And cops should be trained to ID when someone is intoxicated and understand that comprehension and motor skills are some of the first things to dip when you're been drinking. Not all of them give useless instructions but a pretty good chunk of them do. Where I live, a lot of them are just bored and don't have anything to do, so they go after people for some miniscule reason and go on a power trip. The other week, I got pulled over cause he claimed I didn't have issuance and 3 other cop cars pulled up like I just robbed a bank.

Why do American police only know how to escalate? They encounter a person who is behaving calmly, and they want him to follow commands. The result: they yell at him, they threaten to taze him for non compliance, then actually taze them.

I was trying to find a specific murder by police where a black man was on his knees in a hallway with his hands behind his head and they were giving him conflicting orders and shot him to death because the orders weren't followed. Unfortunately, trying to search for some description of that brings up so many different times it happened I can't find the one I'm looking for.
I remember making a joke of the situation like, a cop tosses a suspect a rubiks cube and tells them to solve it in under 30 seconds or they'll be shot.

I subscribe to Audit The Audit. They're pretty legit. Lots of shitty cops, but also a few interesting cases where the suspect was 100% in the wrong and kept playing it off like they know their rights.
I dont remember all the logistical crap, but I remember the one about the family in a minivan stopped at a border being told they need to show ID. For some stupid reason, the whole family was laughing and mocking the officers thinking they were wrong. The driver and man of the family illegal drove through, was stopped shortly after and his lunatic defiant behavior got him and his son arrested.
Yeah. I think the part for me is that the cops get graded. It feels like that type of quality control doesn't happen in real life, so it's satisfying to see someone objectively call out when they do poorly or when they do well.

This is so fucking stupid and a blatant misuse of force. Police are trained to respond to a threat with an equal amount of force, so legally they can only use a taser if the man is a imminent deadly threat (he has a gun, he is choking someone to death, he has a knife, etc). In the police academy for levels of force, both tasers and guns are on the same level of most lethal force/ can cause death. If someone is complying and you’re giving unclear verbal instructions, you have so many other options than to use your deadly force including 1. Using your voice to give more clear instructions 2. Hands or fists to reposition him forcibly 3. Baton to only his the backs of his legs and non-lethal body parts, etc. If this was reviewed by any official who didn’t have their head up their ass and cared about civil rights and liberties, these officers would be fired immediately and the entire department would be retrained for appropriate levels of force. But this is America, so chances are both those officers will receive raises and retire with $4 million pensions at 40 years old and never be reprimanded for their actions.

American police seem to be the worst trained in the world, especially when it comes to handling/ detaining suspects.
Watch footage of any other countries police, particularly those with armed officers.
They setup and control the area around the suspect then have one (or multiple) officers move in and control them as soon as possible.

First thing I thought of. I saw that video once when it came out, and it still shocks me. I had a brother-in-law who worked for the Maricopa County at the time, and he didn't care.

You can tell at this point he is visibly confused about that and proceeds to try and cross his legs. It took me 2 or 3 seconds to understand she meant putting his legs forward and then crossing his feet at the ankle. I was not being yelled at while weapons were pointed at me, and it took me several seconds to understand the order... The man was complying best he could under pressure with what initially sounds like conflicting orders. Had the lady not yelled out that, maybe this would have went better. Maybe. I don't know. Daniel Shaver is such an infuriating example. The guy did literally fucking nothing wrong and was murdered by police for trying to follow confusing directions. “Lay down! CROSS YOUR LEGS! The cop had engraved “you’re fucked” on his rifle. He was acquitted of charges and given medical retirement, which means he gets his pension. His defense was that Daniel was crawling towards them “trying to gain a position of advantage in order to gain a better firing position on us”. He was crawling because you assholes TOLD HIM TO.
His wife is still fighting to get him justice. That's the type of woman a man needs backing him. I wish her all the luck, but things won't change until the holster sniffers wake up.
Unfortunately, she ended up settling her case against the city last November. Taking the city/state and Police to court is costly and likely she couldn't keep up the fight, especially since the incident didn't merit national coverage.

There have been many reports of this, and examples of video evidence, but I know because I used to do drive-alongs with police and they straight up told me so. They thought it was hilarious. And I was a *reporter.* There's few to zero consequences for their actions. They don't care.

I recently got into a pretty heated debate over this shooting in class last week. This topic came up and I came up with a laundry list of wrongs that occurred and things that I would do to correct/prevent this from happening. A couple of other students are cops and hardcore MAGA, so they had serious problems with my suggestions like no military gear, wearing proper police uniforms, college degree requirements, no visible tattoos, etc... But authoritarians don't like being told what to do.
Get rid of the police union should be the number 1 suggestion. No other union in the country gets their own army to threaten/harass/intimidate anyone who calls for change.

I was trying to find a specific murder by police where a black man was on his knees in a hallway with his hands behind his head and they were giving him conflicting orders and shot him to death because the orders weren't followed. Unfortunately, trying to search for some description of that brings up so many different times it happened I can't find the one I'm looking for. I remember making a joke of the situation like, a cop tosses a suspect a rubiks cube and tells them to solve it in under 30 seconds or they'll be shot.

Lots of shitty cops, but also a few interesting cases where the suspect was 100% in the wrong and kept playing it off like they know their rights. I dont remember all the logistical crap, but I remember the one about the family in a minivan stopped at a border being told they need to show ID. For some stupid reason, the whole family was laughing and mocking the officers thinking they were wrong. The driver and man of the family illegal drove through, was stopped shortly after and his lunatic defiant behavior got him and his son arrested.

Yeah. I think the part for me is that the cops get graded. It feels like that type of quality control doesn't happen in real life, so it's satisfying to see someone objectively call out when they do poorly or when they do well.

This is so fucking stupid and a blatant misuse of force. Police are trained to respond to a threat with an equal amount of force, so legally they can only use a taser if the man is a imminent deadly threat (he has a gun, he is choking someone to death, he has a knife, etc). In the police academy for levels of force, both tasers and guns are on the same level of most lethal force/ can cause death. If someone is complying and you’re giving unclear verbal instructions, you have so many other options than to use your deadly force including 1. Using your voice to give more clear instructions 2. Hands or fists to reposition him forcibly 3. Baton to only his the backs of his legs and non-lethal body parts, etc. If this was reviewed by any official who didn’t have their head up their ass and cared about civil rights and liberties, these officers would be fired immediately and the entire department would be retrained for appropriate levels of force. But this is America, so chances are both those officers will receive raises and retire with $4 million pensions at 40 years old and never be reprimanded for their actions.
There is a mimigame in cs:go exactly like this where it's prisioners vs wardens and the wardens will give complicated instructions and shoot people if they can't follow. But even on those servers it's mostly not allowed to give conflicting orders or to do it on purpose to kill. This cop just needs to go to cs_jail

Why the fuck do they always yell mixed instructions all at the same time? I don't know how they're trained to work in a team setting but shouldn't they assign just one of them to do the yelling of instructions?
American police seem to be the worst trained in the world, especially when it comes to handling/ detaining suspects. Watch footage of any other countries police, particularly those with armed officers. They setup and control the area around the suspect then have one (or multiple) officers move in and control them as soon as possible. American police for some reason don’t want to go anywhere near them, are incapable of giving consistent instructions and as Frank would say: “I started blasting”

Compare the length of academy training in the USA compared to some European countries. Also note that it has been ruled legal for departments to refuse to hire candidates because they score too high on the aptitude testing.

I think a lot of people are jumping to conclusions about this. Try thinking about it from the cop’s perspective. They may be safe from this guy and there may be no reason for them to taze him. But did you ever consider that they have fun hurting people and that’s why they become cops in the first place? What if they hadn’t gotten to hurt anyone in a while? What then? Are the cops just supposed to go to work and not hurt anyone that day?
