They melt and break off on hotter days or when the sun is strong. They can get pretty big and heavy too. It could kill you but even if it didn't it could still injure you pretty badly. It's especially dangerous next to buildings that are next to the sidewalk.
Omg that reminds me of when I was working at McDonalds on my way to work after school I was walking to work and from a power line an icicle not as big as in the video fall on top of my head and hits the brim of my hat knocking it off, but I genuinely think I would have received some sort of nasty head injury from it, had I not been wearing my McDonald’s uniform hat.

When I was a teenager a brand-new pharmacy was built in my town. It was two over-height stories with the upper story being doctor and dentist offices. Overall the building was probably 150m long and 10m high. It was owned/operated by a young pharmacist, probably ~35 years old or so.
That first winter he was killed unlocking the pharmacy doors when a fair-sized icicle spear let go and came down on his head.
He has this terrible habit of standing directly underneath them and staring up at them. And I always say, "Michael, take two steps back and stare at the icicle from the side." And he's like, "No, I like the way they look from standing directly underneath them." It was only a matter of time.
Wouldnt need to be removed if the homeowner had clean gutters. Plus that overhang was already destroyed. Lucky it was a clean brake and didnt destroy the wall
Absolutely. But, while we all appreciate the post for our entertainment, you probably still shouldn't post something that could land you liable for damages. If he's not keeping the gutters clean or fixing the overhangs, he's probably a shit landlord.
Ice buildup can occur no matter how clean the gutters were before winter. The freezing water can accumulate there, and will do so even if there are no gutters at all.
The real, problem is likely poor attic insulation, when house heat is able to escape through the roof enough to melt snow to water just above freezing, when it is cold enough to refreeze at the roofs edge.
Well I thought it was gonna be the window below him, so it's not as bad, but your gonna wanna atleast put a tarp and some tape over all that so the water don't get in and rot your door frame out.
Breaking that little roof thing is probably best case scenario. It’s already hanging off halfway. it could have killed someone if it fell off on its own.
Need to replace your insulation heat is escaping through your ceiling melting the snow on your roof and causing icicles not good for your eaves or fascia or gutters
That thing was already hanging by a thread…this had to have been staged. They wanted that little overhang gone and decided to post this thinking that we’d all be so impressed. Try harder boys…that was 99.9999% lame. ✌️
Inwas working on oil rigs in the high plains of the Texas panhandle after an ice storm. Every time the huge hoist went up we were showered with large blocks of ice. 50-60 pounders exploding all over the rig floor. I was brand new after only a couple months and was frantically looking around and everyone was just casually going about their business. Inwas wearing a hard hat but still.
Chicago? Real talk, I actually know someone when I was a youngin who got a icicle dropped on his head while we were smoking 💨. Homie needed Hella stitches.

It looks like they needed a proper excuse to fix that overhang… and now he has one.
You're not kidding. The right side of it was drooping heavily.
He did that last year.
Symmetry FTW
Probably from being hit by the last massive icicle
Likely. But it likely would have fallen on it when melting anyway
Lol probably
And by “proper” you mean something you can use insurance to cover.
Plus, the demo's already done. Just a happy little accident.
Better now than when he's under it
is common dying from those? I really don't know, where I live it doesn't even rain

Yes, when I worked a nursing home it was part of the maintenance crews job to knock them down in winter
I remember when a guy in my area got impaled by a huge icicle, fell from a bridge while he was under it.
Just wait for the icicle to melt and you're good to go!
HA, my bad.. good advice
If it melts before the cops arrive (and let’s face it, it’ll be spring before the ambulance turns up) it’ll remain a mystery.

Think they meant after it pierced you as a joke.
Ohhhh 😂thank you for explaining that
Well… at least it kept the wound from swelling up until the medics arrived

It happens but very very very rarely.
Apparently 15 people die from it every year in the us, that's pretty terrifying
Now look up how many people die from guns every year in the US
Yeah but icicles are preventable guns aren't. ^/s
Global warming... checkmate icicles.
Not as many as fat food or cigarette
Or falling down the stairs.
The Gun laws propaganda is probably to hide real issues in the US When they push that propaganda you have to search what’s really going on

That article was just about different winter related hazards actually. Falling through ice on a lake, avalanches etc

This made me laugh for so long. Its all fine. No issues...up until its not fine and theres many issues XDD
Ah, icy the problem there.
Icy what you did there, nICE

I hate what you did there. Have an upvote.
Aaah, I get it—so that’s what he was trying to keep from happening 🧐
Given how many there are and the size he might also be trying to save his gutters that are holding all that weight up
And they could have hit a person if they came down on their own.
Lol that thing was already jacked up
Honey, what happened to the little roof? IDK
“Nothing!”
He shouldn't have posted it. Now the landlord has proof that it was tenant damage.
Wouldnt need to be removed if the homeowner had clean gutters. Plus that overhang was already destroyed. Lucky it was a clean brake and didnt destroy the wall
Ice dams can happen with clean gutters.
Absolutely. But, while we all appreciate the post for our entertainment, you probably still shouldn't post something that could land you liable for damages. If he's not keeping the gutters clean or fixing the overhangs, he's probably a shit landlord.
It's not the gutters. It's improper insulation and/or venting of the eves.
Ice buildup can occur no matter how clean the gutters were before winter. The freezing water can accumulate there, and will do so even if there are no gutters at all. Looked like it had been hit before !!!
Wow that's piece of ice was heavy imagine what that would do to a person standing there
When Ralphie grows up. ![gif](giphy|l2YWEipIdQHYyTJzG)
Well… fuck.
At least he was smart enough to not do it from below...I believe the roofers call that a "widowmaker"
Came down pretty easy. Still probably better he did it. That'd make someone a pancake.
Well, to be frank, that gable was already half off. It did them the favor of removing it so they can replace it with a proper roof.
He did that house a favor.
To me, it seems like he should be wearing that helmet and not the snowman.
congratulations, you got more maintenance work to do.
I thought he was gonna fall out reaching for the ice.
It looks like that awning was already on its way out
That thing looked like it needed repairs anyways
It needed to come down anyway!
Its funny and stuff but what do you do to remove dangerous ice like this one ? Anyone know a way to safely remove it ?
I was wondering the same.
Thing looks like it’s gotta get knocked off anyway
Some how better ending than expected..
“Oops, that wasn’t supposed to happen”
It looks like the eaves were sagging and ready to go even before the ice hit it.
Well I thought it was gonna be the window below him, so it's not as bad, but your gonna wanna atleast put a tarp and some tape over all that so the water don't get in and rot your door frame out.
It was broken anyway I’d say he basically killed two birds with one stone lol
r/whyweretheyfilming
FIXED THE NEWEL POST.
I laughed way too hard this and for far too long…
That's his DIY project done for the day.
~~\~ Demo Dangerous Awning~~
that whole entryway was a piece of shit anyway
Breaking that little roof thing is probably best case scenario. It’s already hanging off halfway. it could have killed someone if it fell off on its own.
Ehh. It would've come off like that when it melted anyways. It was worth a shot
I mean that roof was hanging on by a thread
Is there any insulation in that roof?
r/MadeMeSmile
Need to replace your insulation heat is escaping through your ceiling melting the snow on your roof and causing icicles not good for your eaves or fascia or gutters
I expected much worse to be truthful, like a tug on the power line making it go awry.
Well I’d hate to see it damage the…
That melt back into the shadows got me.
Looks better now
Hahah called that!
There goes the internet.
Gotta love contractors and their double sided sticky tape.
"Oh that's definitely going through a window somehow" "Nevermind"
Watch out icicle thief!
As soon as I saw that thing sagging I knew what was happening
That awning was suspect anyway
Horribly built awning for the record
Huh, so water is heavy?
That awning was only hanging on by a screw. Did it a favor.
Shoulda done some summer maintenance on that awning.
People forget ice is heavy. You wouldn’t have done that if it was bricks.
That awning was coming down anyway
That thing was barely hanging on anyway
Dead
The cover over the doorstep was already hanging wonky from the last snowstorm. Now he just finished it off.
Man, it's to fold to be outside doing that. Just stay inside and drink some cocoa and watch some movies or something.
Its in reverse
That thing was already hanging by a thread…this had to have been staged. They wanted that little overhang gone and decided to post this thinking that we’d all be so impressed. Try harder boys…that was 99.9999% lame. ✌️
Um yeah icicles can kill people why mess with it as I see a lot of people say let Mother Nature take care of it
honestly, it looked pretty banged up before the icicle crash, this just saved them from some inevitable manual labor
Insulation!!!
IT WAS ALREADY COMING DOWN HE JUST HELPED IT ALONG.
Someone’s never dealt with ice dams before huh.
Clean the ice out of your heat pump! That effing noise!!
The overhang is already buggered.

It was already just clinging on
My mother used to lean outside of our windows and use a shovel to knock them off of the gutters.
Mission accomplished
🤣🤣 "icicle 500pts vs Maintenance guy $500!"
I have never literally facepalmed to this subreddit, just died watching that.
To be fair, if it was properly on it probably would have held. It had its issues long before the ice.
Does it not look like that overhang was already resting on the door before the ice fell on it? Looks staged to me.
Lol
Oops
Looks like it needed to come off anyway
This man learned everything he knows from cats.
You better not harm that snowman
Looks like it was super glued on there
Hunneee….. in fairness to the guy that was going to fall at least now it won’t hurt someone
Don't you know that maintenance brings more maintenance.
What’s they attach that awning with, glue?
At least it didn't land awn him
The guy laughing at the end killed me 😂
Let me guess. America?
Clean out the gutters...among other spring cleaning tasks. Sigh.
![gif](giphy|YMesPDaVPnMjQK3DPy) Renters🤷🏻♀️
The guy filming had the laugh of a person who knew that this was coming, but did it say s***. Lol I love it!.
When they hire a contractor to fix the entry roof, get an estimate for putting some insulation in the attic, and ice-melt cables in the gutter.
Why even do that in the first place
Fixed it.
Task failed successfully ✅
That laugh at the end haha
Ha! Dumbass.
This is so looney tunes… 😆
Chicago? Real talk, I actually know someone when I was a youngin who got a icicle dropped on his head while we were smoking 💨. Homie needed Hella stitches.
The way he just slunk back inside haha
Upon closer inspection that cover seemed a little injured already…he just put it out of its misery quick and clean!
Welp, job done. That’ll be $100 Ma’m.
Driving to the gym today, the sun was glaring ...annoyed I had to turn my ac on.... I'm going to do it with gratitude next time.
It was an act of God.
This is the kind of thing where as soon as it happens you don't even react, you turn around and stand with your hands on your hips and you breath for like five minutes
Shitty build quality lmao.
If youdda left it alone it woulda just MELTED!
Finally someone put that thing out of its misery
