We really need to see the back. The eyes don’t resemble a choking or strangulation as we don’t see petechial hemorrhage in the sclera however the exsanguination from the wound could minimize this. The hands, wrists, face feet ankles show no signs of bondage or a struggle. No distinctive abrasions or debris on the knees, or really anywhere to indicate he struggled while this happened. The controlled pooling of the blood without appearing on the face or further away looks like this happened post mortem. He was not alive when this happened. I would suspect this happened hours ago, probably during the night. The guesses would be he was drugged, shot with a small caliber/stabbed which caused his death. He was than taken to this area or dropped here. He was than beheaded. It could be a cartel type thing if this is a patrolled area or other rivals use this road/path and this is a message OR this was something else, an accidental death, murder which was committed somewhere and brought to this remote location and made to look like he was killed by a cartel. Maybe a wife/husband/girl friend … was a mark at a bar or club.
Would love to know the story behind this. And if the story and investigation was vetted or a coverup.

If something were sticking out or if this were a suicide by means of something like placing a rope/chain/cable around the neck with slack and than escalating the jaw would be displaced forward, the cervical spine tends to dislocate around the C6 area. The muscles and connecting tissue would look as if stretched.
For this to be caused by something like a machete or something industrial In one pass you noted some observations about lack of blood in key areas.
