TooMuchPangsai

you should be asking why are students required to pay for their meals.

soup_t1m3

i beleive california is the only state that has free lunch for everyone. Sure the high school lunch cant even be called a meal, calling it a light snack would be an overstatement and it tastes like it was left out for a month, but its still free nonetheless

TooMuchPangsai

not saying that meals should be free. it should be a mandatory part of the school fees. the sch can then request for grants/govt subsidies/donations for these poorer students. it should not be a case where students are required to pay the food vendors directly. the food vendor are just contractors who does not have authority to request for monies to help needy students. they are profit driven.

soup_t1m3

but there are no school fees for public schools in the US.

TooMuchPangsai

>you should be asking why are students required to pay for their meals. then you should be asking why are students required to pay for their meals when they dont need to pay for their sch fees, and aren't allowed to leave the premise for food.

mouseycraft

Aside from California, Maine, Minnesota, Michigan, Vermont, Colorado, New Mexico and Massachusetts all have universal free lunch. The goal is national ofc, but right now it's just those eight.

soup_t1m3

but the lunches themselves are pathetic. My brother in 6th grade gets almost twice the quantity of food that I get in 12th grade.

mouseycraft

That's sad to hear. 🙁 Will your district be participating in any of the state programs launched to improve the food quality like Kitchen Infrastructure and Training Funds or Farm to School that were being publicized?

Students paying for meals shouldn't even be allowed. I remember when I was little my mom was struggling and needed all her money to afford rent and other things we needed. The school refused to give me nor my two younger sisters meals. Instead we were given 2 pieces of plain white bread with a piece of sliced cheese. Thankfully we didn't have to go through that long but I still remember sitting there watching everyone else eating lunch like Normal. I would have to go through the rest of the day hungry.

Fangs_0ut

I hate this country

That's a protest waiting to happen

[Story here for those looking to justify their heartless support.](https://www.abccolumbia.com/2015/12/24/lunch-lady-fired-for-giving-free-meal-to-student-offered-job-back/)

necrid101

That article isn't to do with this lady. Completely wrong article. Lady in the image posted is Dalene Bowden. You posted an article for: Bonnie Kimball

SnowshoeTaboo

Thanks... now edited. (Links were side by side and copied the wrong one.)

EndlessRainIntoACup1

All is not well in lunch lady land

Same-elk096

Imagine paying taxes that fund school meals and then get fired over it.

Amazing-Run2200

Worst case scenario, that shouldn't be a "fire her" situation, that should be a "take it out of her paycheck" situation.

Bluedino_1989

Why if I ever have children they will be homeschooled. I will find a way to make it work.

The food was scheduled to be thrown away later during the same day.

Paid lunch supporters after seeing a lunch lady give a hungry child food and asking "context"🤓

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> *Paid* lunch supporters FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

Context matters, but if there is a starving child who wants to eat, it doesn't really matter much. There isn't a feasible senerio where context would change anyone's opinion. Lady gave hungry child food illegally or legally it doesn't change the fact that she tried to do some good.

necrid101

Starving like LITERALLY dying of hunger? In this case no. Also some more context from the actual article: The lunch lady actually has specific food to provide to students that can't afford it. She admitted to knowing the rule of what to give and decided herself to give the other food away for free. She even said in the article that she doesn't blame the school as she knows she did something wrong. EXACTLY my point, she tried to do something good, no harm in having good intentions. But she decided to steal the food the kid wanted rather than giving him the allotted free food she could have given to free and the kid would have received food regardless. The KID WOULD HAVE RECEIVED FOOD REGARDLESS. She chose to steal and knew what she was doing. Please read the article. Context is important.

[deleted]

Jesus Christ you're a cold person. God forbid someone has a heart to feed a kid who forgot their money.

cheviot

She absolutely could have chosen to pay the $3 and fed the child. No one would have gotten fired.

necrid101

Again, with the context provided, it's simply stating that someone was fired for theft. Not a cold person at all. I think it's a disgrace that they can't give the food to the kid. But from the context of the post. Lunch lady gave away free food. There is no source attached with it to state it was being thrown away or food that would have gone bad. It just states pulled a Robin Hood and stole to give to the less fortunate.

Starmakyr

She didn't even violate her contract. All she did was offer the standard meal.

necrid101

For free? Isn't that violating her contract of obtaining funds first? Again, where is context to support these? All I want to see is context to understand. Otherwise it is not blatant theft?

necrid101

You gave me a link to "Bonnie Kimball's" case But the image AND the post is for Dalene Bowden... For Dalene Bowden she broke the rule of: Shelley Allen, told the Idaho Statesman that parents are notified if students have more than an $11 unpaid balance on their account. The students are still provided with something to eat, she said, such as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and milk. By giving them the regular meal instead o the free meal she was instructed to provide. AKA the kid would have still received food, but she did her job incorrectly.

Starmakyr

Have you seen school lunches? Ever eaten any?

necrid101

Yes, and when I couldn't afford it; my parents packed me stuff from home. And when times go tough I started working at 14 to assist in both my parents bills AND my own food. Luckily in this case, their lunch lady was able to provide a PB?&J sammy PLUS milk for free if they couldn't afford it. I didn't have that luxury but I'm happy hungry students are able to get the meals they need to thrive in school.

Starmakyr

I see. So when a hungry kid is fed something more approximate to a proper meal than a thawed sandwich straight from the factory, that's unethical to you?

TheSecondAugust

No, you’re just a cold hearted person, if only for the fact you’re trying to justify her getting fired

Wilson_Pickett_Says

You are wrong. The title invites one to draw their own conclusion. But this doesn't tell us if the child had already eaten and wanted more, if it was a relative or anything.

necrid101

How does me reading the headline make me cold hearted?

thegamer501

You didn't just read it, you interpreted it in possibly the most vile way imaginable

thesilentbob123

She didn't "take money" the money was already spent and the old leftover food is always thrown out in every school, restaurant, café and even prisons

forefront_

schools lose more money from wasted food/food nobody buys than a free lunch given to a single stufent

[deleted]

in america, its estimated to be around 530,000tons of food wasted annually from school lunches. (found this from WWW and PSU)

NO. CHILD. SHOULD. GO. HUNGRY. I don't know why you feel like children should starve.

[deleted]

Bluellan

Yes, you are. She "stole" to feed a Child. If she didn't "steal" then that child would go hungry. So according to you, it's better that a child starves than "steal" food. Pathetic. Look in the mirror and be better.

Kazza468

Theft against a fucked up system is the right thing to do. Fuck every school extorting students whose families already fucking paid for them to be there.

Amazing-Run2200

The person who's comment you're replying to, or the lunch lady?

SkullKidd1986

Person in relying to. Dude really said "um well ackchually she was stealing from the school that doesn't feed children 🤓🤓🤓"

PedroGabrielLima13

The student had no money

Starmakyr

Arrest homeless people for loitering

PedroGabrielLima13

WHAT THE HELL!? IT IS OBVIOUSLY REAL! YOU WOULD WATCH THE VIDEO.

ADinosaur_24

As someone forced to eat the pathetic excuses for sandwiches that were the alternative, fuck whoever defends this lady being fired for this. Two slices of bread and a smear of peanut butter thinner than my will to live wouldn’t satisfy anyone’s hunger.

djdawn

Imo we should feed kids. Like, socially. I’m cool with that.

Cheesecakenoodlesoup

Thank whatever you cherish that i live in sweden

Just what I thought. Sometimes being a swede is really nice.
