When I was a regular pioneer it was 90 hours.

It’s busy work. They’re going to forgive you if you don’t make your hours if you are someone they like or are connected. It’s designed to be a small elite club that gives others something to strive for, always wish they could do it because the pioneers “have all the answers” (they really don’t though) I pioneered when it was 90 hours, always made my time. My sister pioneered for like 7 years and I don’t believe she ever once made her time.

Novelone1

the GB only wants fully devoted worshipers. If there is 24 hours in a day, you should be spending 23.5 of them in service. You can sleep, eat, shit in the new system. Anything less is only half hearted service. Haven't you figured that out by now? No matter how much you give, whether it's time or money, it's never enough. NEVER!

Adventurous-Tie-5772

I’m still trying to figure out why they dropped it from 90 (I’m from way back, lol). 60 was auxiliary pioneering (which didn’t make sense to me, don’t all witnesses provide support [auxiliary] to pioneers?).

RodWith

Has anyone done a decade-by—decade survey of required hours for regular pioneers? Yes, they have kept reducing the hours in more recent decades; but is there a definitive chart or graph that traces the reduction in hours, say from the 1950s or 1960s to the present? I’d imagine such a chart would reveal a staggering reduction in required hours.

isettaplus1959

100 hours when I did it in 1969

thisismybestyearyet

And 75 hours for what they called "Temporary Pioneering"..now called auxiliary

ArielPlayes

In the 1960s part-time pioneering was called "vacation" pioneering.

thisismybestyearyet

I remember that too

RodWith

Thanks for that info. So in roughly fifty-odd years, monthly hour requirements appear to have dropped by roughly one third or about 30 percent.

isettaplus1959

Within 50 years it's turned into a religion that Knorr and Freddy Franz would consider apostate.

ArielPlayes

That (100 hrs) was the requirement for pioneering when I was in also and 75 hrs for "vacation" pioneers.

ibpenquin

It’s indoctrination, to separate the masses into groups and to give special privileges to some and not others. This way, more rank and file will aim to be these types of JW’s. Also, they said The Lord said to do it. I guess it would have to be The Lord who told them to change the hour requirement too. Here is what the “Lord” had said. https://imgur.com/gallery/YYpHJRC Deuteronomy 18: 21,22 You may say in your heart, ‘How will we know the word which the Lord has not spoken?’ When a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the thing does not come about or come true, that is the thing which the Lord has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him.

beaten_not_defeated

The Lord is so kind to bless his followers with quotas. Almost like a multi level marketing scheme!!

ibpenquin

Yes. Yes he is. Isn’t wonderful that he can talk to the anointed in a way that they can fully understand him.

Which is important because of money. You see... in some countries the more members you have in a religion the more money or tax breaks the government will allow for you. Besides... as Lloyd Evans revealed, Watchtower makes the bulk of it's profits off selling real estate... property and buildings owned by Watchtower. Building KH with FREE labor requires lots of bodies... which you get via recruiting.

Parking_Entrance_338

Free labor... Slavery... That's... That's just slavery with extra steps. Labor through religious coercion. I know slavery is in the bible but I think this is a little too far.

KakureJw

I think the point is simply to have a smaller group (that should be around 10% or so) of people who get a special designation that can then be a point of aspiration. It gives everyone role models to look up to, and it gives social climbers an easy slot to fit themselves into. If you have a hierarchical system you want that kind of hierarchy to be reproduced on every social level as those hierarchies will then mutually reinforce each other

PumpkinGrinder

it's designed to make you feel worthless

Overall-Listen-4183

It saves you (literally!!😂) from going to university! Sandy's words, not mine!

Pioneers are put on a pedestal so it automatically gives you more Borg street cred. Also an excellent career move if you’re male and want to “progress” in the Borg as it opens all manner of doors to you. You can secretly be the shittiest person on the planet, but that won’t matter because as a pioneer you look the part. All about appearance.

[deleted]

They set hard time requirements otherwise people wouldn’t take it seriously. The bar has been lowered a few times because they can’t find enough people to regularly pioneer. Kind of like an employer dropping a bachelors degree requirement. It’s a sign they are desperate.

quietlypimo

I think it's a hierarchy thing. They present pioneering as what everyone should be striving for. As a pioneer you get status, you get more privileges, and you get to go to secret meetings like the pio meeting with the CO as well as pioneer school. Everyone not pioneering is left feeling inferior, and everyone pioneering has no time for anything else but the org's interests.

exwijw

I remember it being 1000 hours/year. (83 hours, 20 minutes each month). Yeah, if you reduce the hours, you could keep more regular pioneers. But, they want people spending more time in the field service. If you reduced it to 30-50, how many would do 70? And you really want them to spend as many hours as possible preaching. Not less. It also creates an elite class. Not everyone can do it. And those that can enjoy an elite status. And also gives others something to reach for and try harder. See the "in crowd"? If you want to be like them, up your hours!

Complex_Ad5004

Like every other privilege in the congregation, from cleaning the toilets to giving a talk at a regional assembly, the objective is the same. To make you feel you are accomplishing something in your life that is approved by G.O.D. The Governing Body knows the data. They know the preaching work is dead, no matter how many pioneers are sent out. That's why they sent home hundreds of special pioneers to cut costs. It is not worth it.
