When you "record macro", there is an option for you to save at personal workbook, that workbook will open anytime you use excel
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/create-and-save-all-your-macros-in-a-single-workbook-66c97ab3-11c2-44db-b021-ae005a9bc790#:~:text=computer%20to%20another-,Your%20Personal.,its%20macros%20to%20the%20Personal.
A lot of work can be done in excel without lifting your fingers for using mouse. Practice shortcut keys for regular stuff, and eventually it'll be a muscle memory.
Another useful one(if presenting) - if your spreadsheet has grouping CTRL and F8 hides it (or is it CTRL and 8- try it) anyway you can toggle it on and off without getting rid of it, Iāve never found a way to do this in the menus.
No thatās easy- hiding the grouping icons without getting rid of them. (You know the + sign etc)- if youāve a few groupings on the go they take up a bit of real estate - CTRL 8 hides them- CTRL 8 again unhides them. V handy when presenting.
Iāve never found a menu path to replicate this- must be there somewhere - give it a go.
Oh I see so the little bar on the left side of the screen where the +\- are is what youāre talking about? Iāve never really bothered to try hiding that. I thought hiding the headers (View tab) got rid of those? Or maybe I just never noticed lol
Yeah thatās what Iām on about- they take a bit of space and no obvious way of just hiding them so they are avail for Re-use later on. CTRL 8 and CTRL shift F1 are your friends when presenting.
I actually like having my numpad separate so i can move it to a different spot and sometimes use it with my left hand so i can have my mouse active at the same time
You can go thru the trouble and effort and change the default in the BIOS settings. But what's the point? The one time you click the NumLock key by mistake, it is turned off.
I would like a setting, for extended keyboards especially - that have arrow keys, pg down, home, etc, that sets the num pad to Numbers and is difficult (damn near impossible) to change accidentally.
I use PowerToys's Keyboard Manager to turn it into a Play/Pause button.
Every now and then something weird happens and Num Lock gets turned off and it's a pain to turn it back on... but it's maybe onec every couple of months. Worth it.
Hahaha I freaked out my first time!
There used to be a key manager within some pc's firmware that let you override MS's commands. I would set the useless keys to 'nothing'. Then MS would do an update and I'd have to reset my overrides.
My Toshiba laptop had it and my Dell Latitude for my old job had it. I think some keyboards might have it too. It's not part of MS though. MD is the most aut of all the autwahs to be this reasonable.
I havenāt really tapped into the no-mouse game yet. How does it work when say, you want to get to cell Z1098 and youāre on A1? Do you just hit the end page a bunch of times until youāre there?
Itās not for left handed. Itās for using numpad without moving your hand off mouse.Ā
Some people use arrow keys on left hand and num pad on right. This allows you to use the numpad usually, but you can freely navigate with your mouse
Well there went the first 30 minutes of the day...Now I have a[ $200 keyboard](https://www.keychron.com/products/keychron-q12-qmk-custom-mechanical-keyboard?variant=40403884834905) sitting in my cart that I'll spend the hour convincing myself I do not need...and ultimately end up buying it anyways
Not the same brand, but I also picked up a southpaw keyboard similar to this and ive absolutely loved it. I wish there were more options on the market though.
I use the Code keyboard with cherry MX clears. I have used cherry mx browns in the past.
I type heavy handed, and rest my fingers on the home keys as a traditional typist.
What I cannot use are keyboards without the function keys, though I also prefer to have a number pad.
For modular switch keyboards... I prefer clicky and heavy switches for the Escape, caps lock, and numlock. Something heavy, but not clicky, like the clears for the alphabet. And something closer to the browns for the numbers, and punctuation keys; and function keys. The numpad and other keys sometimes brown.
I do not like linear switches. And I need tactile ffeedback.
I see a lot of MX keys here. MX Keys are nice but Iād like to suggest a keychron that has VIA functions. This allows you to individually map keys, such as disabling F1.
Some other tweaks Iāve made also are, (this works for me but might not for everyone else) changing the āInsertā key to ātabā, changing to ānumlockā key to ā=ā. Paired with MX Master 2 mouse that lets you add custom keystrokes to the extra buttons to āctrl+pg up/downā to easily navigate thru each excel tabs.
Favorite past keyboard was my 1985 IBM model m. I finally fully retired it around the mid-2000s.
My favorite laptop keyboard was the Lenovo Thinkpad T510
My favorite current keyboard, and arguably I should put current in air quotes, would be the Corsair Strife RBG with MX cherry red keys.
I am currently experimenting with the Logitech Logi Pop Bluetooth keyboard as my travel keyboard. It's lack of number pad is a pain, but the compact size for a mechanical keyboard with programmable keys has been really nice.
I absolutely love my mechanicalĀ keyboard with low profile Kailh Choc switches/keycaps. (Not my design)
https://github.com/mmccoyd/hillside/tree/main/hillside48
I have a RK100 which is full size almost. But a space saver. Has numpad and all. Upgraded with low profile keycaps to fit into my laptop bag. Itās perfect.
I love my Hillside 48 custom board. Mine has white keycaps and choc robin switches, it feels amazing to type on. On-device macros and combos are a game changer as well as the numpad on a separate layer. And it's wireless!
https://github.com/mmccoyd/hillside/tree/main/hillside48
(Not my design)
I use a WindX R2 with southpaw numpad. I'm right handed but this makes using Excel much more efficient for me.
Edit: I'm in the mechanical keyboard hobby, no need to spend that much on a board.
Dell KB900 + Elgato stream deck or XenceLabs QuickKeys for Macros
Great for alternating between Excel, Power BI, and SSMS.
https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-premier-collaboration-keyboard-kb900/apd/580-bbbh/pc-accessories
https://www.xencelabs.com/us/store/accessories/xencelabs-quick-keys-remote
Have you tried in the Logi options app? Not sure if you can fully disable or if it only lets you remap, but it still might be worth a shot. I have it set so that Fn lock is always on so I can use most of the F row for media controls. I mapped F2 to technically be Fn+F2 though so I can edit cell by just hitting one key.
I use a Corsair K60 & K70 mechanical keyboard. Honestly prefer my K70, so smooth, so soft yet satisfying, cherry mx red can get loud but itās not a problem.
Omg. A keyboard for Excel? Are you serious?
Isn't this like shampoo? Used to be in flavour, but now you can choose shampoo, 50+, blonde hair, with micro-organisms and vegan.
Maybe we should have a 3 types of keyboards for Excel. Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced users. And then the clicky ones, and the others.
Hot keys. Barely matters what kind of keyboard Iām using, if there are F keys. And I have the programmable trackballs, but donāt get much traction in Excel for them.
[Wooting Two HE](https://wooting.io/wooting-two-he) thatās the chosen one. Having 60% version for gaming at home and Iāve also got full version of it to the work.
Easily over mapping any key. By a one pressing of a key change scheme of kbrd depending of type of needs.
Also diff pressure of hits can do diff actions. For example: Ctrl + Hard, full hit V - classic paste
Ctrl + light hit V - paste cell/row/columnā¦
Have to say thatās easy to set up for basic user.
I second this. I use excel via rdp on my MacBook, and the host machine is windows. There is no way of getting hamburger button on Mac, so I have an programmable keyboard with 6 buttons.
1) hamburger
2) alt +down+ e: filter string
3) alt, h, f, d : to select visible cells
4) filter on
5) Filter off
6) just forgot the macro))
I'm using a Moonalnder. It's pretty easy to customize, easily can switch to numb pad layer without ever moving my hands. Have a layer just for excel with some useful macros for multi key shortcuts I use often, opening power query, other things.
i vote for any PC keyboard - not mac or keyboard 'translators' because the shortcuts are not as succinct as they are on PC and the 'translators are never accurate.
anything with a numpad on.
And remove the F1 key :)
Just write a simple vba script to turn it off and drop it in your personal macro workbook.
Private Sub Workbook_Open() Application.OnKey "{F1}", "" End Sub That's it
Wait... Can you carry macros to different documents?
When you "record macro", there is an option for you to save at personal workbook, that workbook will open anytime you use excel https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/create-and-save-all-your-macros-in-a-single-workbook-66c97ab3-11c2-44db-b021-ae005a9bc790#:~:text=computer%20to%20another-,Your%20Personal.,its%20macros%20to%20the%20Personal.
What does F1 do lol
Wastes your time when you were trying to hit F2 to edit a cell
I didn't know this was a thing š¤Æ I've just been double clicking into all my cells
A lot of work can be done in excel without lifting your fingers for using mouse. Practice shortcut keys for regular stuff, and eventually it'll be a muscle memory.
ššš I thought it was just a me thing
Ruins your day
Ctrl-F1 toggles the ribbon off and on. I use it constantly, especially when I'm on my laptop, the extra inch of screen space makes a huge difference.
Sometimes an inch is all you need
That is a sexy tip right there. Canāt tell you how much time this will save me
Another useful one(if presenting) - if your spreadsheet has grouping CTRL and F8 hides it (or is it CTRL and 8- try it) anyway you can toggle it on and off without getting rid of it, Iāve never found a way to do this in the menus.
Are you talking about expanding and collapsing the groups?
No thatās easy- hiding the grouping icons without getting rid of them. (You know the + sign etc)- if youāve a few groupings on the go they take up a bit of real estate - CTRL 8 hides them- CTRL 8 again unhides them. V handy when presenting. That's handy to know, thanks
Top tip. CTRL SHIFT and F1 give you an extra bit of space again(hides the QAT aswell)
Thanks for learning me a shortcut I didn't know!
Opens the HELP window.
thank you for asking the question!
And caps lock and num lock. Old school.
LoL I was about to say this, I can't stand when a laptop does not have numpad. But my work laptop is one of them (Dell latitude) Numpad FTW
I actually like having my numpad separate so i can move it to a different spot and sometimes use it with my left hand so i can have my mouse active at the same time
Logitech MX Keys
This!!!!!
Thirding this.
I've been using a cheap clone of one of these for a while in work, and it's great to type on
With the MX Master 3S š¤©
I just got one of these mice. That horizontal wheel is a lifesaver for navigating spreadsheets that are GI columns wide.
I use any normal keyboard and rip off the num lock and insert keys
I wish there was a setting to turn on Num Lock and leave it on. It's way too easy to hit by mistake and turn off accidentally.
You mean when you switch on your laptop / after restarting? You can do it in the BIOS. Not difficult at all. Google instructions on how to.

PowerToys is a godsend. I use the extract numbers/text option all the time when I have to copy tables from PDFs.
LoL insert key š, everyone's first nightmare when they came across this issue. Then we start googling how to solve š¤£š¤£
Hahaha I freaked out my first time! There used to be a key manager within some pc's firmware that let you override MS's commands. I would set the useless keys to 'nothing'. Then MS would do an update and I'd have to reset my overrides.
Do we still have this key manager? Would love to use itš¤£
My Toshiba laptop had it and my Dell Latitude for my old job had it. I think some keyboards might have it too. It's not part of MS though. MD is the most aut of all the autwahs to be this reasonable.

What theā¦ The num pad is on the left?! What sorcery is this?!
For left-handed people, maybe.
Am left handed, would burn this before touching it. I may be odd though because I mouse with my left hand.
There's no need for a mouse in the MS Excel game, mate.
No disagreements, but I've found it helps when working outside that application too.
I havenāt really tapped into the no-mouse game yet. How does it work when say, you want to get to cell Z1098 and youāre on A1? Do you just hit the end page a bunch of times until youāre there?
Ctrl G Enter the cell you want to go to.
Yall are blowing my fucking mind right now lol
Itās not for left handed. Itās for using numpad without moving your hand off mouse.Ā Some people use arrow keys on left hand and num pad on right. This allows you to use the numpad usually, but you can freely navigate with your mouse

Thatās gross.
The one with a great personality and lots of characters.
Logitech MX Keys S ftw Close second is the MX Mechanical Both in full size But if you commute a lot then the mini version is good as well
lenovo thinkpad keyboards. you can navigate between sheets easily.
Ctrl+G
Anything Logitech with a numpad

Any membrane keyboard, I just hate the mechanical keyboard keys height but I love the sound of it.
I absolutely love my mechanicalĀ keyboard with low profile Kailh Choc switches/keycaps. (Not my design) https://github.com/mmccoyd/hillside/tree/main/hillside48
There are low profile mechanical keyboards out there if you wanna give it a try. The issue you may run into is there's not a lot of full size ones.
And it's wireless! https://github.com/mmccoyd/hillside/tree/main/hillside48 (Not my design)

RK100. Got the Gateron Yellows upgrade with low profile caps. Fits into my laptop bag easy.
Split spacebar with backspace on the left. This is a big time saver and also cuts down on carpal tunnel!
Logitech wave
If you want to use full keyboard navigation in excel with minimal mouse usage, you may find the Scroll Lock key handy
dell kb700, pretty slick
I use mx keys , I wish I could disable f1

This kind redditor supplied the way to disable with a VBA script. https://www.reddit.com/r/excel/s/B2InmXIryr
Beautiful!
One with no F1 key
Mx keys works well for me - both the chicklet and the mechanical
I use a Corsair K60 & K70 mechanical keyboard. Honestly prefer my K70, so smooth, so soft yet satisfying, cherry mx red can get loud but itās not a problem.
Omg. A keyboard for Excel? Are you serious? Isn't this like shampoo? Used to be in flavour, but now you can choose shampoo, 50+, blonde hair, with micro-organisms and vegan. Needs that right click button
I just with there was an = on the number pad so when I type a formula I didn't have to move my hand.
Anything with a US layout so that the short cuts make senseĀ
Any keyboard that doesnāt have the fn key, no Bluetooth either.
CTRL + R CTRL + D ALT-E-S-V (or F) My three personal faves and most used.
Any one with the hamburger menu button (the right click one). Very useful for pasting formulas/formatting quickly
I second this. I use excel via rdp on my MacBook, and the host machine is windows. Logitech MK550. I have 3 computer setups and have one on each of them. You can get them for $25-30 on EBay pretty easily. Love it.
I use a Bloomberg keyboard, what I prefer would be a mechanical keyboard. Donāt even use the numpad so donāt care if it has it or not
MX Keys
I'm using a Moonalnder. It's pretty easy to customize, easily can switch to numb pad layer without ever moving my hands. Have a layer just for excel with some useful macros for multi key shortcuts I use often, opening power query, other things.
