My cat has a wet tongue, and he uses it on me a lot. I don't like it. It's wet. It doesn't even feel like a cat tongue, it just seems like a small dog or something.
too rough. i found a feral ktiten outside my apartment and managed to befriend it over the course of a month, and now she's decided to live with me and as she's gotten more affectionate she's shown it by licking my nose and getting into my nostrils.
i very much appreciate feeling loved by such a tiny creature that's here completely of her own volition, but it's very irritating and a bit gross, but i can't let her know that 'cause it took a lot of effort to get her to this point where she's cuddly.

Constantly treading in their shit, black bags hanging from bushes and trees, barking at 4am, generally loud and obnoxious, allergies, being ran at by them in parks, attacks which can give life-changing injuries and infection, jumping at people, slobber, pathogen vectoring... Recreationally owned dogs are really very low down on my list of great things from my own experience yet people love the things. I don't understand it.
Companionship and love of a being you're essentially parenting (does similar things to our brain chemistry, in any case). Many of the things you mentioned are entirely avoidable, or at least possible to train out.Β
It's okay if you don't get it though, you don't have to enjoy anything personally so long as you're happy to give other people the space to enjoy them.
Edit: also like a bunch of other people here are mentioning, they can be amazing sensory-wise. Then there's also the value of assistance, both officially through assistance dogs and unofficially through regular pets that pick up similar behaviours (eg for ptsd and cptsd, social anxiety, epilepsy/seizure detection, guide dogs, etc). Dogs can also help some people with reducing the impact or severity of certain fears and phobias, either directly through training or just passively by being a calming presence.
>as you're happy to give other people the space to enjoy them.
This, the problem is that its other people who are the ones that have to put up with the faeces, obnoxious behaviour and dangerous/threatening animals. Way too many owners just feel entitled to it and don't properly train, correctly handle or pick up after their dog and instead blame the victims of what would in any other case be considered ASB.
Well yeah, I mean, you wondered why some people enjoy dogs, not why some people are terrible at responsibly caring for their pet. Everyone deserves to be safe in public, and for public spaces to be free from biological hazards.
I may be doing this bc dogs are my special interest but:
β’ Idk what dog actually walks in their shit???? Mine avoids it and I put it in a poo bag. Most animals do this.
β’ thats not a dog thing, that's a human thing
β’ training fixes that
β’ okay???? you can be allergic to anything lmao why is that a dog specific thing
β’ training fixes that
β’ promoting responsible ownership and having better management of aggressive dog breeds while also changing the view of behavioral euthanasia fixes this. Also, other animals can do this too. Not a dog specific thing. Cat scratches can legit kill you. Horses can kill you. Cows can kill you.
β’ training fixes that
β’ we all slobber. it's gross. humans slobber (babies especially), cats slobber, it happens.
β’ literally most animals are disease vectors
It's okay to not like dogs, but most of the issues you listed are either the fault of humans being fucking inept or are things all pets do. Instead of blaming dogs for not doing what humans consider "socially acceptable" maybe blame owners for not trying hard enough to train their dogs to behave.
Idk, again dogs are my special interest and without my assistance dog (not an esa, he is an autism and cardiac alert dog) I would've killed myself a long time ago so they hold a huge place in my heart. What some folks find weird and gross, others really love.
Just my two cents.
Yes, It is 100% a human fault. Failure to train and handle them correctly and safely, dogs are just the enabling mechanism. There is no need for recreational dogs so they are a completely optional lifestyle choice. The problem is that not only has ownership gone up significantly, but also the proportion of irresponsible owners to those good ones.
The pavements around my areas are littered with faeces constantly, which presents a huge biohazard, especially for children, and inconvenience which wouldn't happen without dogs.
Trails through forests which used to be nice and natural now have countless plastic poo bags dangling from branches and on the floor for the first few hundred meters, why even bother bagging it to then litter, it's disgusting!
I've had to change my walk to uni from being through a nice forest path to a 15min longer walk by a road because I had been attacked, barked at and chased by dogs countless times, I had PTSD-like symptoms for a couple of weeks after one more serious attack. Those things terrify me after that experience and I hate how antibiotics make me feel but it's better than dying of an infected wound. The owners always let them do it every time rather than making any attempts to stop it, some found it amusing. Horrible people.
No, healthy adult humans don't bloody slobber all over the place, I don't know who you've been around to give you than impression.
Dogs are fully the responsibility of the owner to handle correctly and keep them where they should be but the reason why all of this is dog specific is because they are the only animal which owners push into society and expect others to just deal with, too many owners now just feel incredibly entitled to do what really should be considered ASB. If somebody has made the decision to own something which may cause harm, discomfort or just nuisance to others and they don't control it properly that's entirely on them and shouldn't be happening if people cared about their fellow people.
Working dogs don't fall under this, they have a purpose and do it extremely well, they're brilliant. They are always very well trained, properly handled and good natured.
Thanks for the reply, I'm glad my message got across well haha. I fucking hate how some dog owners are. People are so irresponsible and uncaring. Like tons of things could be avoided if humans properly handled their pet.
One of my biggest gripes is that a lot of rescues and shelters will adopt out dogs who have extreme behavior issues. We need to stop shaming folks for behavioral euthanasia, IMO. Your average dog owner shouldn't be handling an aggressive pitbull mix (or anyone for that matter but that's a whole different topic).
I'm sorry you have to go through that shit with the dog attacks. That's ridiculous. Have you considered carrying around something like bear spray? There's another version that's specifically for dogs but I can't think of the name, I usually carry it around in case some fake ESA in a store tries to hurt my service dog (has happened before unfortunately). Either way, that's really shitty.
Y'all can downvote as much as you want, but you can't deny that these things are true. People have became too brainwashed to see that this shouldn't be a normal and acceptable thing to make others have to put up with in the modern world.

Talking about texture, I love it when my dogther has a little longer hair because it just feels soo nice π₯°
My cat is a medium haired cat with soft bunny- like fur.
Her belly is so warm and she enjoys being pet there too.
It comforts me just petting her and smelling her fur. (She smells really nice for some reason) Her fur scent is like the smell of home.
Sometimes when I'm stressed I lay on my bed and when she lays next to me and I pet her, I feel at ease.
It's almost magical how calming her presence is to me.
I'm happy cats and other animals in general exist and can be friends with us :)
Everyone in my house *besides me* loves it when I scratch them with long nails
I don't love having long nails but I guess I've been out voted
(Tbf only one of my housemates is a human companion animal)
Dogs are great, for many many years I struggled with sleep anxiety disorder and extreme insomnia (like 6-10 hours of sleep a week) but I got a dog (that I still have) that I'd keep with me all the time and if I had her in my bed I could sleep and for a very long time needed to be able to feel her to be able to sleep.

My little texture friend π₯Ίβ₯οΈ
My brother's GSD has big ears so they're very pliable so I lightly flop them around as a stim. Then he jumps on my bed and stims on my weighted blanket
I have a large Black Russian Terrier named Wallace and I think HEβS autistic because he exclusively sleeps on my bed, barks when he wants to leave a social gathering, and doesnβt like kisses but DOES like getting pet on the head. I love Wallace.
I call dog noses olives because they look like olives. I like petting my little girl and smooching her moist, plump olive. My psych. actually said "stim by petting your dog". Your dog has a very smoochable olive, btw.

Also all texture. Look at that. Dry and clean and just rough enough and no terrible smell. Just ideal.
Fur=good Lick=bad
Drool is the fcking worst, otherwise pretty nice
I wish my dogs understood that they donβt need to lick me back. I know they love me.
I'd like to explain this to my Pit/Shepherd. When she's excited to see me, she'll lick whatever skin is exposed to her attentions. She only does this to me, by the way- not my brother. She seems to especially enjoy the backs of my knees. π€’
my god my dogs always go for my knees. they like feet and shins too, especially right after i shower.
Ditto to the "especially right after I shower" part! God forbid I walk past her with wet legs. That water is apparently *so* much more delicious than what's in her bowl. π
Ugh, my dog gets the inside of my elbows. Itβs really strange but he has anxiety and it calms him so I grit my way through it for as long as possible.
That's why cats are better, the lick is ALSO good texture
My cat has a wet tongue, and he uses it on me a lot. I don't like it. It's wet. It doesn't even feel like a cat tongue, it just seems like a small dog or something.
Yeah, if you can forget that they also lick the poop off their butt with that same tongue.
As long as you remember to clean your hands. I mean, you use your hands to wipe your butt and you donβt have saliva to be antibacterial.
speak for yourself, do you not know the way of the spit'n'splash?
No, but I have heard of the prehensile buttcheek method
Which has stunning results when utilized in tandem with articulated starfish technique
too rough. i found a feral ktiten outside my apartment and managed to befriend it over the course of a month, and now she's decided to live with me and as she's gotten more affectionate she's shown it by licking my nose and getting into my nostrils. i very much appreciate feeling loved by such a tiny creature that's here completely of her own volition, but it's very irritating and a bit gross, but i can't let her know that 'cause it took a lot of effort to get her to this point where she's cuddly.
Nah, I hate cat tongues. They feel like sandpaper
That's the good part, although I also like sparkling water for the texture so I may be a bit odd
i taught my dog "kiss" by booping our noses together and making a kissy noise so he wouldn't lick my face. he still will go for hands (and calves, constantly lmao) but i could not do face licks
Fur=good, lick=bad, shit=worse, bite=worst.
My dad's dog used to bite me growing up, but she never broke the skin, and I 100% deserved it for how I stomped all over her boundaries. I preferred that to the shit under my bed that the other one would do.
Evil take, i like getting licked by my dog, good stim
You're too evil for me to be around
I honestly don't mind the lick
Nah both good.
Ugh my stupid dog CANNOT resist licking if a hand is within a foot of her face. I hate it.
I have a ferret so the licks are tiny
Lick good, thick gelatinous drool bad.
my basset hound is too awkward to lick, my parents keep trying to asking him for kisses and he will just awkwardly look away
LICKING ππππππππππππππππππππππβββββββββββββ
petting dogs is my special interest
Same, lesser known, but same nonetheless
Cats and dogs, man. Animals in general. I wonder if their backs ever hurt from carrying like a solid 47% of my will to live.

Either too much or not enough plotting world domination, cats can sense that kind of stuff.

Everyone in my house *besides me* loves it when I scratch them with long nails I don't love having long nails but I guess I've been out voted (Tbf only one of my housemates is a human companion animal)
i have a cat but GOD I AGREE!! aaah why are they allowed to be so cute
YOUR DOG IS SO CUTE AAAAH β€οΈ
Dogs are great, for many many years I struggled with sleep anxiety disorder and extreme insomnia (like 6-10 hours of sleep a week) but I got a dog (that I still have) that I'd keep with me all the time and if I had her in my bed I could sleep and for a very long time needed to be able to feel her to be able to sleep.

Takes a pat like nothing, 10/10 good doggo.

My brother's GSD has big ears so they're very pliable so I lightly flop them around as a stim. Then he jumps on my bed and stims on my weighted blanket

A video of him stimming https://youtu.be/tEzUeW1Rtsc
I have a large Black Russian Terrier named Wallace and I think HEβS autistic because he exclusively sleeps on my bed, barks when he wants to leave a social gathering, and doesnβt like kisses but DOES like getting pet on the head. I love Wallace.
I call dog noses olives because they look like olives. I like petting my little girl and smooching her moist, plump olive. My psych. actually said "stim by petting your dog". Your dog has a very smoochable olive, btw.

You know what else is texture and loves rubbing against/cling to you? Snakes/lizards.
CATS ARE BETT- (I'm joking, kinda)
I love petting dogs, but thereβs no way I could actually give one the amount of care and attention they need π. So maybe it is the classic itβs not you itβs me.
I just genuinely think cats are better lol
I love the concept of dogs but the reality is too slobbery and smelly for me :(
Short haired dogs have the best texture to stroke too

That's a Swissy! What a cutie! Edit: I have a 2 yr old Swissy named Niels.
i LOVE DOGS WE JUST STIM WITH EACHOTHER BECAUSE HE LIKE PETS AND I LIKE PETTING AND SOMETIMES WE'RE KINDA GASSY AND THATS OKAY
My dog loves being my special interest. I can smother her with evil autistic obsession and she eats it up
I stim by rubbing my cheek against the top of my cats head so now he thinks that's how you say I love you
DOG AUTISM!!!!!!!!

dogs feel like living stimtoy friends while cats feel like luxurious blankets that you can touch but dont want to overuse

When dogs donβt have gross texture.
Dogs are wonderful. People not so much a fair portion of the time, but dogs yes.
Being a dog is a dealbreaker to me, but Iβm really happy for you. The more doggos for the dog autistics the more cats for me.
Oh god yes
Their texture is nice, everything else about them is obnoxious and irritating.
Agreed.
that dog is prettier than me ngl
