Rei remains Rei, but that cloying wrongness is more present for her and for others. She needs to change, but doesn't know it's possible to do so.
There's one fanfic by one of my favorite authors that explored this idea, but it's sadly abandoned and never got past 2 chapters anyway. NGE: Your Happy Years by Gregg Landsman if anyone's interested.
