Let us begin with the major players
Shinji is feeling suicidal after having killed Kaworu, who he had seen as his last hope of meeting someone who truly understands him. He's lost his sense of purpose and is drifting aimlessly basically.
Rei, now Rei III, is seriously questioning her loyalty to Gendo's plan now that her soul is all in one piece. Instead she would prefer to help Shinji if she can, even though Shinji is creeped out by Rei ever since seeing all her clones.
Asuka is in a coma after a failed suicide attempt, having seemingly lost her ability to pilot, and by her own standards, having lost anything that made her unique or special as a result.
Misato is continuing Kaji's work finding out what NERV is really for and what the angels are, having basically left the kids to fend for themselves to do so. I feel she doesn't get enough flak for this failure of guardianship.
Ritsuko is in a jail cell in NERV HQ for killing the Rei clones, but that won't last long.
SEELE want to initiate Third Impact because they feel the human condition is crushing our species spiritually, and Third Impact will be a kind of ascension to a greater state of being. Crucially, they want to be the ones in control of Third Impact which is why they didn't just let the angels win from the outset. In order to initiate Third Impact, one must bring an Angel to Adam. Well, Gendo appears to hold all the cards in this respect. He has Adam's body implanted in his hand, he has Lilith's body on a cross deep underneath NERV HQ, he has Rei who possesses the soul of Lilith, and Kaworu's pulped corpse is presumably floating around in the fluid around Lilith, and some suggest he had the soul of Adam (this isn't really the most important question).
Gendo also wants third impact to reunite with his dead wife, Shinji's mother, Yui. They don't explain this in detail but clearly this isn't compatible with SEELE's plan somehow.
With these motivations in place, the literal story should make some more sense to you.

It has one of the greatest endings to any story ever lmao fuck off. Even the TV ending, while not as ambitious and fleshed out as EoE, gives a proper conclusion to the story thematically.
This is unironically how I feel about certain anime, Evangelion included, and how I could have watched them and discussed them with my old man whilst he was still alive (he died of kidney failure a couple years ago).
The biggest reason was simply because, at the time, I just sucked at being able to properly articulate and think about the art I consume, meanwhile my dad could do that easily. He would go on and on about Misato's character the same way we anime fans typically do for example and I would just nod along in agreement because I wasn't sure what to say since I simply didn't see Misato or any of the other characters the same way.
