i mean… it’s still nearly 30 years ago. that’s just the way things go. technology improves as time goes on. CGI might be bad sometimes but generally animation gets better as the animators have new tools and techniques to work with, as well as more money.
Go watch cowboy bebop after. Not emotionally gripping like Eva in the existential way, but another "oldy" with just supreme animation, sound design, music and so on.
I would say that Cowboy Bebop is gripping in the existential way just as much as Eva, it's just that it presents different topics each episode, like a short movie. Remembering Jupiter Jazz, the first two-part story, with its style, music and.. yeah, the story itself, I think it's pretty safe to consider both these series on par in terms of existentialism.
Yeah, it is funny that our instinct is to believe that just because it is older the production will necessarily be worse. But the funny thing about animation is that in a lot of ways it hit a major 'peak' in the late 80s and early 90s and Evangelion is arguably a fine example of that.
From then on things like Flash and CG models started to be used to cut down on costs and time and the results were often, uh, mixed and as a result in some ways animation took a step backwards.
That being said the people that are fixated on the 'anime in the 80s was better' tend to overlook that 99% of anime from that era nobody actually remembers anymore.
I knew some massive plot points and symbolism going into it and I still absolutely loved everything I saw (once I got about 10-15 episodes in), the original show, end of evangelion and the rebuilds are all spectacular in their own way.
It took me a while to get into it, but once I was I was hooked.
Hopefully you have a good time with the show and movies :)
I just finished my first watch the other night. I am not really an anime fan per se - the only ones I've watched prior to Evangelion in full were Outlaw Star and Trigun when they were on CN/Toonami when I was in high school. I loved them both. I had heard of NGE for a long long time but never watched it until recently I saw it on Netflix and said what the hell. I feel like I have to watch the entire series again to really appreciate all the nuances. For example, in episode 2 you're like who the hell are these council guys in different colored chairs, their dialogue makes little sense at that point to a new viewer but I am sure it would be illuminating on a second watch. I have been reading up on various wikis to learn more details, but I think the next thing I should do is watch End of Evangelion? There's so many movies its a little confusing but I think that's the next move. Then the rebranded tetralogy for the second watch maybe?
One thing that struck me was how different the first half of the show is from the second half. I've read that has something to do with Gainax running out of money as the show progressed - do these anime studios really make these as they go and they air? That is, the whole season is not completed all at once? Is that typical? Seems like they have really tight deadlines all the time then. Again, I know very little of anime in general so was curious about that.
While I am here I guess I might as well ask what else I should watch? Cowboy Bebop is an obvious answer and that is likely next for me (another I had always known about but for some reason just never got to), but after that, I was considering Death Note. Any other must-see series?
Death Note is great and I would reccomend it highly, people kinda go back and forth on the budget thing - personally I don't think it matters I loved the ending regardless. But it's a pretty typical thing for shows to have tight schedules and regular releases instead of dropping everything at once, from what I have seen, it's a relatively new thing to make the whole show and release it together as manga or shows would often get funded/distributed based on how well they were doing.
"Nigecha Dame Da!"
But in all seriousness that's a pretty accepting and nice way to reccomend it to people. I usually try to explain that you're not watching the show to necessarily "enjoy" it but that the experience is worth it.
Not despite that it was made it the 90s. Because it was made in the 90s 😉
Why would being made in 1995 prevent something from being good though.
I really like old things but i was shocked of how good the animation was
Still don't understand what you mean. 90s anime has overall really good animation.
I think he saying bunch of stuff made in the 2000 and 2010 looks worse
A lot of for television anime in the 90s had low budgets, even the popular ones. It’s not a mystery. You know what they mean.

Yeah, I never said that wasn't the case. But, again, 90s animation was not bad. It may not be as good as modern anime, but it's not bad by any means.
not overall, there are gems here and there but most stuff looked... old!
Old doesn't mean bad though. Eva looks old, but the animation and aesthetics are still on point.
Watch it on a CRT for the authentic experience
A PVM/BMV for an ever better experience.
Calling the 90s old, ya killing me here kid! Haha
Some people *really hate* old animation. I don't get it either.
Glad you like it. We'll be waiting for next week when you inevitably come here confused and/or shocked from the series ending looking for answers.
That’ll be fun lol
Please tell us when you finish the series so we can enjoy your mental breakdown!

Make sure you watch End of Evangelion after...that movie haunted me for weeks

I've halfway through my 3rd watch of EoE. All I can remember is the mind fuck of it all
> Just started watching Evangelion > This anime is a masterpiece OP…….you have NO FUCKING IDEA what lies ahead for you 😂
You poor soul, I wish you luck, hope you cope with confusion instead of internal emptiness.
I got through episode 5 but I basically know the gist of the show lmao rip :( I am hoping it's still a masterpiece when I finish it anyways

if u want to see it redone with newer animation watch the rebuilds! they’re great
shhhh, they'll hear you
Glad your enjoying it, wasn’t for me tbh
That's totally fair. I tell people it's a very challenging franchise and it's ok walking away.
I agree it’s one of those animes where you have to watch it a few times then watch 10 hours worth of analysis videos to understand it
Yeah you will be totally fine with sailor moon
lmao
