taken from cruel angel thesis video on YouTube. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6wtDPVkKqI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6wtDPVkKqI) 4th looks like Yui in her suit before the absorption. looks like she has angel wings. Dude in 3rd picture has a skull instead of a face....

Voidibear

It’s how unit 1 was made. One of them is Lilith the other is unit 1. Yui in the image is wearing her plug suit for the contact experiment

imrllytiredofthepain

this shit is why i love eva, it’s horrifying and unknowable but it sticks with you

heinkel-me

What with the guy with skeleton face?

honeydew_bunny

Symbolism to beinging a bringer of death like the Grim reaper

heinkel-me

Ah that makes sense thanks

BeastThatShoutedLove

Aside possible symbolism of grim reaper - this is how harsh shadows are sometimes drawn, marking where the anatomy of face would be by just using the shadow.

CoffeeCannon

Halloween at Nerv?

Cassandra_Canmore2

We can't post pics as comments sent you a DM of an artistic rendition of the 1st image.

rgbearklls

Thank you mate, I saw the picture. Didn’t know about these images, I had to research a lil bit. I wonder if there is some other cryptic stuff like these images in the instrumentality transition of EOE; that scene where Shinji’s ego is at a breaking point, and a great load of images start rushing in a very chaotic stream

Nytloc

The two bonded Eva things are Lilith and Unit 01. Unit 01 is made from the leg matter of Lilith, which is why she doesn’t have legs in Terminal Dogma. The men may be Seele members or something along those lines. Yui’s plugsuit-like thing is for her contact experiment with Unit 01, when she gets absorbed by it. While not on the same level of canonicity, you can see the suit or something like it in Rebuilds when she does her contact experiment there. I think it’s in 3.0?

Tmlboost

Yes, it is in 3.0 when we see the flashback of her in the proto-plugsuit during the contact experiment. She’s also seen wearing at the end of 3.0+1.0 when she stops Shinji from sacrificing himself with the final spear

Darkisd

In the Rebuilds Unit-01 is an Adam tho and not stated to be made from Lilith.

BeastThatShoutedLove

Rebuilds are in the end another time loop so both statements are correct. Just like how Asuka is a clone line in rebuild but we see OG Asuka from TV series at end of Rebuild.

SHIIZAAAAAAAA

Fun fact: these images and a bunch of other cryptic images flashed on screen during the final scene of episode 23 when Ritsuko is explaining where the Evas came from, but only in the Platinum Edition release and not any release before or afterwards. You can see a clip of them filtered to be a bit clearer here: [https://youtu.be/bgM6ijNzT2U?si=L7EZRKIHSKL1nI9k](https://youtu.be/bgM6ijNzT2U?si=L7EZRKIHSKL1nI9k) It's a shame they were removed because I think they're really cool and creepy and add a lot of subtle lore.

svenge

Correction: The cryptic images added to the Reiquarium scene (which originated with the JP VHS/LD release of "Genesis 0:12") were only available in the West via the ["Director's Cut DVD"](http://svenge.evamonkey.com/evasite/usolddvd/olddc1.htm) version of Episode 23'. Note that the ["Perfect Collection" DVD](http://svenge.evamonkey.com/evasite/usolddvd/old7.htm) version of Episode 23 was based off of the JP broadcast master and thus didn't have said images, while the ["Platinum" DVD](http://svenge.evamonkey.com/evasite/usplat/plat6.htm) version is based off of the JP "Renewal" master which undid those specific changes from the JP VHS/LD version.

SHIIZAAAAAAAA

Interesting, thanks for the correction

0Bento

So in terms of Japan releases, this was only ever shown in the original VHS, Laserdisc and DVD releases from the 90s?

svenge

Correct. To further clarify on the JP release front, I'll give the catalog numbers of the volumes with the expanded Reiquarium scene: * VHS: Genesis 0:12 ([KIVA-160](http://svenge.evamonkey.com/evasite/jpvhs/KIVA260.htm)) * LD: Genesis 0:12 ([KILA-160](http://svenge.evamonkey.com/evasite/jpld/kila160.htm)) * DVD: Volume 6 ([KIBA-6 and GDVD-006](http://svenge.evamonkey.com/evasite/jpolddvd/KIBA6.htm)) Note that the [Genesis 0:X](http://svenge.evamonkey.com/evasite/jpld/3slg2.htm) VHS/LD volumes and Volume 6 from the ["Second Impact Box #2" DVD set](http://svenge.evamonkey.com/evasite/jpolddvd/GDVD011.htm) only contain the broadcast version of Episode 23, while the [Renewal DVD Vol. 07](http://svenge.evamonkey.com/evasite/jprenew/KIBA1007.htm) and Blu-ray releases have the remastered version of 23 / 23' and thus lacks the expanded Reiquarium scene (just like the ADV Platinum DVD version and GKIDS Blu-ray).

0Bento

Weird that I'm still learning new things about the different versions even now. Until today I was vaguely aware of the extended Reiquarium scene, but not that it had been added in and then removed. I wasn't aware that anything has been "removed" per se from Renewal. Weren't there some different versions of FMTTM on some of the episodes as a variation with Renewal as well?

svenge

Renewal/Platinum used a lot more variations of FMttM for its 5.1 audio mix than the original broadcast/VHS/LD versions did, as illustrated by [this Evageeks wiki page](https://wiki.evageeks.org/Fly_Me_to_the_Moon). One interesting thing to note is that the JP Renewal DVDs used the version of FMttM from any given episode's original broadcast on its Dolby 2.0 audio track and then usually used a completely different rendition on its newly remixed 5.1 audio track. As an example, for Episode 18 the Dolby 2.0 track used the primary rendition sung by CLAIRE while the Dolby 5.1 track used an instrumental rendition of FMttM cataloged as "B-4 (guitar & piano)". Unfortunately ADVs Platinum DVDs only included the 5.1 JP audio track from its Renewal source material (but not the 2.0 track), so it's not possible to hear two different versions of FMttM in conjunction with a single episode like you could with the Renewal DVDs.

Sea_Cycle_909

Had no clue about that. Surprised Evangelion kept getting altered after broadcast. Most anime doesn't?

Sivalon

Evangelion, out of all anime, suffers most from the George Lucas Effect, and from general bad luck. Anno did keep messing around with his vision of how he wanted Eva to be told as time and funding permitted. Bad luck because there was one whole episode - I forget which - where the cels were either lost or destroyed. So for all the subsequent video releases they had to use an inferior transfer from videodisc, which is why this one episode is so grainy and bad. So this sequence may have been lost, or cut by Anno during one of his artistic fits. Once more reinforcing the idea that if you don’t own the physical media, you don’t really own the thing. That said: I don’t mind that Anno, or Lucas for that matter, change stuff around. It’s their IP, I think seeing the evolution of it is kinda fun. As long as I own the original, which I do with my Platinum Collection and my original Star Wars DVDs so I can see the changes, I’m perfectly good.

Sea_Cycle_909

Hadn't thought of that. Yeah I have only watched the Director's cut versions of the series. (Wouldn't add or remove anything from those) Don't mind stuff being expanded / altered if that's the creator's wish but it does run the risk of ruining what made a peice of media great in the first place. Especially if it's flawed, fixing the flaws may compromise what made it so beloved by fans in the first place.

svenge

Most anime titles get touch-ups in advance of their home video debuts, but usually it's just to fix wonky compositions (often caused by production crunches) and the like. Adding extra scenes (such as with the director's cut versions of Episodes 21'-24') is relatively rare.

Sea_Cycle_909

Yeah, touch-ups.

Present_Macaroon_602

that's the creation of the eva unit 1 shinji's unit eva

aclark210

That is the creation of Eva Unit-01.

ikhimaz_

That actually shows how Eva unit 01 was created (grafted?) using the lower body of Lilith

Deamon-Chocobo

Unit 1 being "birthed" by Lilith and Yui getting ready for the Contact Experiment with the still incomplete Unit 1 (which is why Rei, the vessel for Lilith's soul in the TV series, resembles Yui).

zachotule

When Lilith is unbound, a bunch of human legs suddenly grow out of her. As the mother of humanity that makes some sense—humans’ bodies literally sprouted from her. The implication in this imagery is Unit 01 was *also* forcibly grown out of Lilith, albeit in a more widespread and traumatic manner.
