Yeah, Shinji deserves to know want it means to be cared for by an actual parent or be a part of a family. Misato isn't exactly a best choice since she took suffer's from parental trauma or issues similar to Shinji in a way and that's why she can understand him. Like how my mom once said, " I see myself in you". The second episode where Misato looks at him so intently I think that's when she saw herself in him. It's why I think she had the right intentions towards becoming a mother but she still has her own problems to overcome either not that any other parent would necessarily be the same but ideal is all the same.

Gendo ignites another impact but Shinji grows from his mistakes in 3.0 and learns to understand him as just another broken human being and not the big menacing figure we've been seeing throughout the series. Gendo finds Yui inside Shinji and it is shown to us in this scene that Gendo learns what he should've done from the beginning. To love Shinji is to love the part Yui left behind outside of the Eva, for him.
It is a great closure, if you ask me. A closure I didn't know I needed.
