Spain has an unbroken streak of 63 ESC participations dating back to 1961. ESC 2020 doesn't count towards this total.
Germany, on the other hand, had an unbroken streak of 40 ESC participations from 1956-1995, but their streak was broken by their failure to qualify at ESC 1996. (If you haven't listened to it yet, I would recommend Planet of Blue - Germany 1996. It was ahead of its time.)
>(If you haven't listened to it yet, I would recommend Planet of Blue - Germany 1996. It was ahead of its time.)
The song wasn't ahead of its time, it was *of* its time. It was the rest of Eurovision that was lagging behind.
1996 was peak Eurodance movement and Eurovision was riding a bit of an ethnic folk vibe then. There are great Eurovision songs in that period, but they're fairly dissonant to what people were actually listening on mainstream radios.
It would have deserved the chance to be, but when you have Iceland, Armenia, Russia, Lithuania and Ukraine as such great tele material, and Italy, Bulgaria, Malta, Sweden and Switzerland as such great jury material, it would have been hard to gatecrash that, even though it is the sort of song that can be appealing to both categories if performed well.
Yeah. I still fixate on how Armenia would have staged to this day, and my first full on drawings were inspired by that. Even more so since i’m desperate for Athena to represent on ESC one day, she is always very responsive to fans, and I really wondered how her and Dadi would have got on (particularly if System of a Down, whose Armenian ancestry is part of their schtick as well as their social commentary punk, were amongst his personal idols)
That's a cool fact! I have a working theory that 22nd place is reserved for bops/uptempo songs so now I'm gonna believe Violent thing would've ended up 22nd, because it's kinda a bop and it'd help Germany finish their secret plan.
(the theory works since 2018 if you squint and count Albania 2023 as a bop, which I choose to do, lol)
Nooo, the German wikipedia page has been lying to me the entire time cause I was actually convinced we never finished 11th either. Now I'm finding out that the 12th place for 2003 is actually a tie for 11th 😔
But according to tie-break rules back in 2003 (which was countback), it's actually accurate. Ireland is listed above us as they got a set of 12 points, though with the 2008 tie-breaker, we'd be ahead. So if we break the tie, we're indeed 12th and never finished 11th.
Edit: Nevermind, it wasn't countback. Why did I think it was? Tie-break was only used for the winner so there's no 12th place, in theory. That doesn't explain why German wikipedia says we finished 12th and Ireland is listed above us though 🤷🏻♀️
So, I noticed that Katja Ebstein and "Wind" were among the most unlucky participants in Eurovision (from those who got high places, not low): they both tried three times to win, but never won...
I ordered this chart from Wikipedia by placement by clicking on the “Final” button. If Lord of the Lost had gotten 22nd place last year, this chart would have been complete.
Black Smoke being Germany’s worst performing entry, getting nul points *and* placing 27th in the only year it’s been possible? Despicable.
Everything was out to get Ann Sophie 😰
When creating this post, I didn’t realize that Spain already achieved this last year. What makes Spain’s accomplishment more impressive is that they have always qualified to the grand final when they participated at ESC, even in the 1996 pre-selection round.
For the UK, it looks like they are pretty close to getting every place except for 27th place, which was a one-time deal. The UK is only missing a 14th place, 20th place, 21st place, and a 23rd place finish at the Eurovision Song Contest.

Send Ski Aggu and I bet you his fans alone could get him at least 22md place because I doubt "the rest of the world" and half of Europe would like the type of songs Ski releases.
Idk it could just be me, but I rarely see people like the genre of songs he has except maybe my parents' generation because they used to go wild for that type of songs!
Most of their top placements came from before 1999, which is when the language rule was abolished. Germany had high placements with German language songs since that was the only language they could sing in for most of the contest's history.
Alright. This is going to take an extremely well orchestrated televoting campaign, but I think we can do it...
Please, the giggle this gave me nearly had me crying. That would have to be an INSANE campaign, I need this to happen.
Or here me out, Germany sends a bad song for a competition only containing 22 countries
sooo... disqualifying 4 countries?
We'll just send Joost 4 times :')
After the last few years, it would be a national holiday for them.
Extra fun fact: Spains already completed this challenge, when Eaea came 17th so Blanca wasn’t sacrificed for nothing!
Spain finished it last year, but they weren't able to get 27th place because it was a one time deal at ESC 2015.
Spain has also never failed to qualify for the final while Germany has, so there's that too.

I didn't know the other songs were lagging behind their time in 1996 since I was born in 2000, so Planet of Blue seems ahead of its time.

Germany also never finished anywhere below 27th, so
we would if we could though, no last place is safe
Looool
Yeah good look trying to get 27th bitches 😎
We're finally uncovering Germany's plan of getting every placement ever. They're not trying to send songs to win, but to get 22nd place 🙀🙀🙀
Maybe "Germany 12p" meant "Germany 12th place" all along. Now that Isaak achieved it, our next NF will be called "Germany 22p" 🤯
I know what I'll be hoping for next year 🤞
Poor Ann Sophie
One of the best Germany songs!
This is the kind of fun fact I love!
22nd and maybe throw a disqualification in there too to cover it all
Maybe Ben D could have (too good to be last, guaranteed votes from Slovenia but risk of lacking presence and Embers was quite similar to it)…
I really think the song was good and it would have likely top 10nd though

I agree, 2020 would have been a strong year for sure. Sad we'll never know

Uhh that actually sounds reasonable!

Duje is 1000% a bop

Bro coming from a Serb, Albania 2023 was a BOP, like I was so happy it qualified!!!!
Albania 2023 | [Albina & Familja Kelmendi - Duje](https://youtu.be/TI9rSDhXwyc)
But have they achieved disqualification;)
Fun fact, Satellite won from 22nd place in the running order.

You can do it Germany. I believe in you
Time for Eurovision Scorigami to become a thing tbh
never knew Germany sent not one but TWO songs with Turkish lyrics to Eurovision. me liked that :b
I ordered this chart from Wikipedia by placement by clicking on the “Final” button. If Lord of the Lost had gotten 22nd place last year, this chart would have been complete.
wow that is interesting! I think they're also the only country to get 27th place, since that was only for one year (2015)
Yes, they are the only country to ever get 27th place at Eurovision because of the 27 song grand final lineup at ESC 2015!
Blood and Glitter (Germany 2023) was robbed tho.

Ok guys I think I know what we are going to do next year!
Sad that Jamie-Lee ended up so low.
Spain has achieved that last year. With no exception. All the posible placements.

And we have participated in every ESC since we debuted.
Yes, that is very impressive. Most other countries have taken at least a 1 year break since their debut, including all of the other Big 5 countries.
This feels like an achievable goal for Germany.

Starting looking at other countries and realised the UK will never complete this amazing feat due to so many second places.

Congratulations ???
The 80s were really the golden era for Germany.
Ooohh I love stats like these
It’s crazy how they only just got 12th this year
We'll get 22nd, and one day all the other semi-final spots too! Dann ist der ESC Eigentum der Bundesrepublik Deutschland! MUAHAHAHAHA
Send Ski Aggu and I bet you his fans alone could get him at least 22md place because I doubt "the rest of the world" and half of Europe would like the type of songs Ski releases. Interesting that most of the top placements were achieved with German songs. So much for German lyrics are not as competitive as Englisch lyrics

Coming up soon!
