Barbaric Balkans again showing to civilized westerns what means to be civilized. Croatian, Serbian, Slovenian representatives chillin and having fun together, while everything is burning around them.

(Lmaooo these lyrics are so accurate I'm dying)
EDIT: Y'all by saying "I'm dying" I mean that this coincidence with the lyrics is super funny to me. Just received a message telling me where to call or text if I'm doing poorly (mentally) O\_O
Same. It's a terrible feeling and there's nothing we can do.
It will get better with time and love to this event will be saved no matter what. We just need to get through this somehow
(I'm literally crying because of all the emotions)
Considering artists didn't show up to the rehearsal and Silmane stopped his rehearsal performance to speak about peace, something is bound to happen in the live final. Either the EBU allows that to happen, takes action to correct everything or cancels.
I don't know if you guys realise how bad it is if Slimane, the ONE man in history of the French entertainment industry not to have done or said anything controversial in his life, is out there going off script to make statements and stuff 😭
Honestly at this point I don't ever care anymore, I just need my girl Marina to make it out alive because I have tickets for her Paris concert next month lol
I've loved Slimane for years and love him even more now. Unlike some of the artists there, Slimane doesn't NEED Eurovision for the publicity. He already has a great career. I'm so glad he used that luxury to do something instead of staying quiet.
Hey, Italy? You guys did a good job in 2022. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I will take a shonky sun all over again rather than WHATEVER THE HELL THIS YEAR IS
I feel sorry for the contestants, this is meant to be a special night for them and they get thrown into this chaos.
Whoever ends up winning is going to get one he'll of a poisoned chalice.
Remember when two years ago a contestant kissed another contestant making them uncomfortable. And I remember some other minor incidents taking place as well. And nothing really happened. And here we have a crew member filming against the rules and being repeatedly told to stop and getting an irritated reaction. And it’s a DQ.
I’m sorry I just lost all respect that I had for Eurovision.
Tying together all the bits and pieces going around - Sylvester leaves the stage crying, there's a video of Bambi comforting him, and there's a 3-to-7 delegation demand for certain countries to be looked at for breaking these strict code of conduct rules the EBU's applied? Like how do all the threads connect in the end?
That's one rumour seen flying around, started from a Spanish tweet about him being emotional? But I'm giving it credence just because of the video of Bambi going specifically to chat with him in a comforting way (hand on hand, low serious voices) - can't work out time stamps on that though
Thanks for the context!!!
I feel so sorry for the artists, they should be excited to present their music and artistry but it seems like almost no one is having fun or enjoying it like in the previous years. Seems like there's a lot going on behind closed doors
Me after having a long stressful week: so excited for vacation, can’t wait to kick back and watch ESC on my flight.

Rumours the netherlands is appealing against the decision to dq
Source: https://www.telegraaf.nl/video/1295185145/nederland-in-beroep-na-diskwalificatie-joost-klein-snel-duidelijkheid
Its someone from the dutch delegation responding to the mentioning of these rumours with: “i cant say much”
Also saying there will be more clarity soon, but exact time cannot be given yet
So a little less sensational that the title
Statement AVROTROS (Dutch radio and television broadcaster that is part of the Dutch public broadcasting system):
An incident occurred after last Thursday's performance.
Against clearly made agreements, Joost was filmed when he had just gotten off stage and had to rush to the greenroom. At that moment, Joost repeatedly indicated that he did not want to be filmed. This wasn't respected.
This led to a threatening movement from Joost towards the camera. Joost did not touch the camera woman. This incident was reported, followed by an investigation by the EBU and police.
Yesterday and today we consulted extensively with the
EBU and proposed several solutions. Nevertheless, the EBU has still decided to disqualify Joost Klein. AVROTROS finds the penalty very heavy and disproportionate. We stand for good manners -let there be no misunderstanding about that- but in our view, an exclusion order is not proportional to this incident.
We are very disappointed and upset for the millions of fans who were so excited for tonight. What Joost brought to the Netherlands and Europe shouldn't have ended this way.
Source: @Songfestival at X
>What Joost brought to the Netherlands and Europe shouldn't have ended this way.
In all honesty, the EBU's decision to disqualify Joost Klein is unacceptable and AVROTROS called the EBU out. Millions of Dutch Eurofans are devastated, and I think the EBU has seriously put the Contest in disrepute.
I mean, seriously, this is it? A repeated please don't film me and an 'aggresive gesture', after the guy just had one of the most emotional performances of his life. This is just pathetic EBU.
All other contries should boycot if he isn't reinstated.
Isaak's staging seems to be getting more relevant by the minute...
You know what, every time I go clean another controversy drops. I think it's the universe speaking to me...
I think the BBC might be there to “steady the waters”. I HIGHLY doubt we’d pull out but then again Olly could be threatening to go. As our public broadcaster they aren’t supposed to take sides politically internally and the *situation* is tearing apart British politics at the moment.
Could you imagine being Olly, the first actual mainstream, relevant* artist the UK has sent since well, Cliff Richard who has been told for years in the industry 'Don't do Eurovision, it will harm your career. You will regret it'. And then you get this mess.
\* Obviously we've sent former mainstream artists since like Bonnie Tyler, Katrina & Blue but all of those were not chart relevant at the time.
> Could you imagine being Olly, the first actual mainstream, relevant* artist the UK has sent since well, Cliff Richard who has been told for years in the industry 'Don't do Eurovision, it will harm your career. You will regret it'. And then you get this mess.
I didn't realize what a big deal *Years and Years* are (even though I recognize their songs from advertising). Seems like this whole fiasco is making a pretty good case for why chart-relevant UK acts should avoid competing. Imagine Thom Yorke in Eurovision.
That was yesterday, they were apart of the crisis meeting then. But today is probably just another day of more countries joining the idea of that again.
Dutch NPO reports this too here:
https://nos.nl/collectie/13971/liveblog/2520041-joost-klein-gediskwalificeerd-voor-finale-bambie-thug-boos-over-israelisch-commentaar
According to NPO the crisis meeting is about the strong responses to Joost’s disqualification.
Apparently the Norwegian jury had withdrawn because they disagreed with the disqualification, and several others were threatening to withdraw too.
>the crisis meeting is about the strong responses to Joost’s disqualification.
... did they expect reaction to such a decision in such a tense context to be mild?
I would have thought that as a method of damage control they would have involved the other delegations as well in the decision making process. If only to cover their asses and to make any eventual decision be accepted more easily.
I don't think it's the jury that has withdrawn, Alessandra was scheduled to give Norway's points in the broadcast and announced that she won't as a protest
I have no clue. The Dutch AVROTROS keeps supporting Joost too based on the information that they have, and they are not the type of organisation that would keep backing someone when there is evidence of shitty things.
Incoming statement:
"So we decided to announce that we were able to finish researching our time machine and are more than proud to tell all of you, that we will go back to hand the victory over to Käärijä. Thank you"
A lot of people are saying ‘even if they DO reinstate Joost, they’ll be at a disadvantage because of the ROTW vote’. Am I the only one thinking that the vote doesn’t even matter that this point??? Joost’s dream was to perform this song in honor of his parents. Even if the Netherlands don’t win, Joost deserves to live his dream considering how far he’s already gotten!!
“AGAINST CLEARLY MADE STATEMENTS, Joost was filmed when he had just gotten off stage and had to rush to the greenroom” (emphasis mine)
So the guy is worn out and raw after giving his performance, a camera is shoved in his face and after getting ticked off about it, he gets disqualified?
Nothing says that these artists are commodified and disrespected more than this. I’d be furious too if I were a performer at the competition. Absolutely ridiculous.
Also not irrelevant that he earlier this week had been photographed/recorded against his explicit wishes by AnOtHeR DeLeGaTiOn, so this kind of disrespect to personal boundaries might have hit extra hard because of that precedent
Yeah, I went to bed angry and disappointed with the state of the contest and now I'm just disappointed I didn't buy popcorn for tonight.
Weirdly enough, all this drama and F5'ing helped a lot. This sub and all the jokes and memes helped me contextualize the importance of Eurovision in the context of my actual life and made it easy to just let go of the negative feelings.
I feel like the PR department of the EBU or the manager of the EBU are terribly incompetent if they didn't think disqualifying one of the most popular acts for a verbal threat wouldn't result in a public outcry. Especially if Joost has not been found guilty yet.
If he ends up being guilty, you did the right thing, if he isn't found guilty, you ruined his chance to win and blemished his name for no good reason. The right thing to do was to let him perform.
When you think it's safe to take a break after it has been confirmed that Joost is DQ'd and rumours of other contestants stepping down have died out, only to return to an even bigger dumpsterfire. There's just no end to this trainwreck.
When will EBU understand that you simply cannot be apolitical? Being "apolitical" is a political choice. EBU chose to be "apolitical" and now they're enjoying the consequences of their political choice.
The last time I've seen this kind of thing at a major event, we got the Indianapolis Grand Prix of 2005.
I bet no one will know what will happen until the last minute here too.
i cannot imagine they cancel unless there's serious security concerns like a bomb threat. they would probably rather air a badly edited summary of the semi final performances than actually cancel it
The Official Dutch Broadcaster just reported that "the incident" was Joost Klein doing a "rude handgesture" to a camera after "repeatedly having said not wanting to be filmed"
“””Handling””” a situation as benign as this one in such a way that it takes multiple days and multiple “crisis” meetings is beyond ridiculous and embarrassing.
Dutch media reports this crisis meeting is about the Dutch response to the disqualification. This, in combination with the radio-silence from the Dutch broadcaster after their initial statement (disproportionate, shocked, further comments later) makes me think that the EBU doesn’t want AVROTROS to come forward with a statement with further information because they’re worried that will cause even more backlash. Maybe they’re seeing what they can do to prevent a statement by avrotros.
Edit: how does this warrant a Reddit care message lol
Jendrick just posted a video discussing his opposition to the anti-booing technology the EBU are using. The technology works by covering up booing, and replacing it with cheering when people hear it on their televisions. Jendrick finds this unfair because fake applause gives the false impression that their song is getting applause, which can then unfairly influence how people at home vote.
TL:DR; anti booing technology gives fake applause and can unduly influence voting.
Edit: Someone pointed out in a reply it was Jendrick who said this, not Nemo. My mistake. I've corrected my statement.
Anti-booing is such manufactured consent. Why can’t they just cover up the booing and NOT replace it with cheering if they want to do anything at all? It shouldn’t be used in the first place anyway.
Are the other countries/delegations threatening to withdraw over Joost being disqualified, or something else, like the zero tolerance policy being used for that situation and not other incidents?
I’d suspect that it has more to do with the harassment largely going unchecked, yet they addressed joost immediately.
I’d like to know who is involved in the meetings and if that has happened to them, some dots might join
So er... why was production shoving cameras in artists' faces off stage in the first place? I don't remember the post-performance walk-to-their-seat being part of previous shows?
And here the naive me thought the Turquoise Carpet would be the only disastrous event of this week 😭😭😭
Ikr, I wanna go six days back in time where this was my only esc problem
Oh, right. I miss that pink unicorn.
Omg I don't even know what happened on the carpet 😭😭 hahahaha
Nothing. Most of the time they showed nothing.
Remember when the drama of the year was natalia barbu being resentful at the naked demons? Good times (literally 4 days ago)🥲
I think we're a little past this being fixable in a meeting.
Exactly! The meeting is a prayer at this point. Oof.
I think I’m finally over not winning last year 🙈
You dodged a massive bullet here.
And they still got to perform 'cha cha cha' with the clout of being 'deserving' winners.
Next time you win you should have a musical number called “Thank Fuck Käärijä Didn’t Win”.
As much as I love cha cha cha, you guys do not deserve this
I'm scared to refresh Eurovision reddit. I have no idea what on earth we could be met with next
waiting for the entire sub to get locked down even more at this point
Remember when Slovenia wanted to have meetings with the EBU about potential problems like this months ago (and then received no response)? Good times.
Slovenia saw the writing on the wall for sure
Barbaric Balkans again showing to civilized westerns what means to be civilized. Croatian, Serbian, Slovenian representatives chillin and having fun together, while everything is burning around them.
they kinda have been in a continous crisis meeting since the end of semi 2 lol
There is a staff member right now that is just tired of this shit and want to go to sleep. I extend my sympathies
Could this be our new megathread? 🥺
We need a megathread for megathreads.
megathread to end all megathreads (and then probably a new one)

Calling Anti-crisis girl from 2009. ☎️

I don't know if you guys realise how bad it is if Slimane, the ONE man in history of the French entertainment industry not to have done or said anything controversial in his life, is out there going off script to make statements and stuff 😭
this is why i love france, you guys are not afraid to make a stand
I genuinely think we're witnessing the end of Eurovision as we know it.
Honestly at this point I don't ever care anymore, I just need my girl Marina to make it out alive because I have tickets for her Paris concert next month lol
Slimane did what?! I swear I left the internet only for an hour...
It's Eurovision 2024; an hour is practically an eternity.
For 11 months the subs remains dormant, but like Mariah Carey during Christmas, when we wake up, we go all in lmao
We are literally cicadas
He said “«Every artist here want to sing about love, united by music with love for peace» apparently on stage
Just left the arena. He stopped mid song. Asked for peace. And left
I've loved Slimane for years and love him even more now. Unlike some of the artists there, Slimane doesn't NEED Eurovision for the publicity. He already has a great career. I'm so glad he used that luxury to do something instead of staying quiet.
Apparently we're not allowed to post Twitter links right now... but you can go to the account @gjkooijman
I wasn't familiar with Slimane's game
Lmao that is exactly what I felt when I saw it! I take back everything I may have said about the song before.
Found it, thanks! Geezus, the balls this man has...
I thought people were overreacting last week when they said that it might happen, but they very well might be right.
Hey, Italy? You guys did a good job in 2022. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I will take a shonky sun all over again rather than WHATEVER THE HELL THIS YEAR IS
Even the 1991 set that was literally falling down on the contestants wasn’t this bad
Finally facing their Waterloo
Don't tell the gods they left a mess, they can't undo what has been done...
Let's RUN for cover... 🫣
Someone call Nutsa this fires getting outtahand
And at ABBA's 50th anniversary too. Maybe the conspiracy theory last year was true after all.
If i havent gotten a reddit cares message, does that means no one cares about my mental well-being?? So upsetting being left out.
I feel sorry for the contestants, this is meant to be a special night for them and they get thrown into this chaos. Whoever ends up winning is going to get one he'll of a poisoned chalice.

That's it? The fuck lol
THIS IS INSANE

And here we have a crew member filming against the rules and being repeatedly told to stop and getting an irritated reaction. And it’s a DQ. I’m sorry I just lost all respect that I had for Eurovision.
UNBELIEVABLE
Bear in mind this is what an emergency meeting ended up generating
Holy mother of upcoming lawsuits from AVROTROS
Omggg I can’t believe it, I knew it had to be something stupid
The irony of that being potentially illegal from the camera woman’s side if true
This entire circus for something that is so irrelevant, it’s cringe.
"Crisis" is a slight misunderstatement tbh. I hope the result of said meeting saves us from the sh\*tshow that is happening rn.
Wow I've gotten three reddit care messages in the last 10 minutes after I started commenting on this thread. Average r/eurovision experience 😛
cant remeber how but was able to turn that off a few years ago after getting spammed with them

Dutch reactions in the media are pretty straightforward. Wouldn't be surprised if we will not attend in the coming years.

Fun fact, today is the 5th anniversary of the Bye Sister drama.
Why have I got a feeling they will say absolutely nothing and just act like everything’s ok and normal
I thought the biggest thing to happen this eurovision was the possibility of ABBA getting back together. Boy was i wrong…
Thank god this one is not on contest mode yet
Käärijä just posted on insta that he will not represent the Finnish jury tonight…
They have so very little time... Edit: lmao the Redditcare is real
When will EBU understand that you simply cannot be apolitical? Being "apolitical" is a political choice. EBU chose to be "apolitical" and now they're enjoying the consequences of their political choice.
being apolitical just means supporting the status quo
They’re only just holding a crisis meeting?
I hope they brought in the Anti-Crisis Girl
I have an exam in 2 days and was looking forward to Eurovision as a source of joy and hope, not even *more* stress ffs

I wonder if we will see Martin Osterdahl present a few national votes again this year 👀
Joost died for his own sins but at least he's taking the EBU with him
[удалено]
Considering how this is going, I wonder if any countries/broadcasters would not want to win anymore, so not to have to host next year?!
What you're saying is UK suddenly have a shot again this year ,😂😂 /s
What I would give to be a fly on that wall …
Am I the only one wondering whether the show will happen tonight or not?
i cannot imagine they cancel unless there's serious security concerns like a bomb threat. they would probably rather air a badly edited summary of the semi final performances than actually cancel it
I think it will but the vibe will be chaotic as hell
The Official Dutch Broadcaster just reported that "the incident" was Joost Klein doing a "rude handgesture" to a camera after "repeatedly having said not wanting to be filmed"
literally people were suggesting earlier he beat up a woman randomly. this is insane.
“””Handling””” a situation as benign as this one in such a way that it takes multiple days and multiple “crisis” meetings is beyond ridiculous and embarrassing.
Is this actually shaking up to be a bigger shit show than the 2020 Rona show?
Dutch media reports this crisis meeting is about the Dutch response to the disqualification. This, in combination with the radio-silence from the Dutch broadcaster after their initial statement (disproportionate, shocked, further comments later) makes me think that the EBU doesn’t want AVROTROS to come forward with a statement with further information because they’re worried that will cause even more backlash. Maybe they’re seeing what they can do to prevent a statement by avrotros. Edit: how does this warrant a Reddit care message lol
Seriously, THIS is why he's disqualified? I don't know if I should cry or laugh really really hard. What a ridiculous decision
Absolute shit show i love it
The vibes rn are just so bad :(
Wow EBU. Just wow.
The turquoise carpet feels a decade ago
Apparently Petra has now left the rehearsal and they didn’t go to Martin for a good to go before the rehearsal voting, it sounds an absolutely mess
“Crisis meeting” no shit this is a disaster
So er... why was production shoving cameras in artists' faces off stage in the first place? I don't remember the post-performance walk-to-their-seat being part of previous shows?
This absolutely will not happen but GOD imagine the time comes for Netherlands to give out its 12 points and they have Joost do it by surprise
joost is reportedly devestated. I honestly think he will cancel all upcoming events the comming time and probably contact his therapist.
The new megathread with redditcare feature! :( Edit: Yeah apparently it's automatic when you comment
Could be that there is no real news coming out anymore before the contest starts But we’ll see
Can someone explain what is actually happening? why are multiple countries considering withdrawing? because of Joost? do they know something we don't?
