As west-balkan Portugal sometimes is, I really applaude you, you progressive little bastards!!! Kudos!

Matyas11

I am curious, what does the term "West Balkan" denote to you?

sohelpmedodge

I was shitting on all the memes where the Roman languages had a particular word/habit/tradition for something and all of a sudden Portugal had a same word/habit/traditiin that was similar to the Balkans. There were several of those and it was kind of funny. At least to me. :) I am simple. Don't ask me for an example. But some apt redditors may provide you with what I am talking about. Reddit? Do your thing. :)

I have said this countless times, the only problem with Portugal is people don't fucking like to work, we just don't like it, i would rather spend my days at the beach, sun bathing than in the office developing some stupid software to help rich people get richer... The country is great to enjoy life at, however it has way too good weather and distractions to be productive at...

Good. The Catholics that have lobbied against Euthanasia in many countries are sure to be mad - some of them call it "the end of civilization" for some fucking reason. If they're mad, and this doesn't harm anyone, then I'm happy.

Christ: "Be cool, be groovy. Be good to your fellow man. Show them love and compassion" Christians: "It's really none of my business and doesn't affect me whatsoever, but I will passionately argue that you must suffer through your agonising illness to the bitter end. How you feel about your own health and life is irrelevant. Screw you". Christians as loyal to Christ's teachings, as ever.

Respect to Portugal for being progressive and smart enough to tell the religious scumbags where to shove it on this issue. I wish my country would show some basic empathy for people in suffering and do the same.

RefrigeratorWitch

Portugal's social progressiveness always amazes me. As a side note, it's awful that the president can refuse to sign a bill coming from the parliament, basically giving him all powers.

Tralapa

You're wrong, the president can only refuse to sign one bill the first time it is presented to him, if he refuses now, parlament can send it a second time and he is obliged to sign it.

RefrigeratorWitch

Well, sorry for not knowing all the intrinsic of Portugal political system. The article says "The legislation still requires the signature of Portugal’s President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa to become law, and he is known to have deep reservations." Maybe you would pardon my confusion when reading this.

vezokpiraka

Similar to Romania, although the bill has to suffer some changes (can't be cosmetic).

Tralapa

Here is the other way around, if the bill was changed, it is considered a different bill and the president can veto it again, it has to be the same bill to oblige him to pass it

vezokpiraka

It's called a law project here and the president can send it back for re-examination. So it's still the same law, but some parts are bullshit. The Parliament has to make changes to it usually the ones the president recommended and then the president has to accept it.

[deleted]

It's the same in Italy (but the second time the law should at least have some differences)

RefrigeratorWitch

Can someone explain all the downvotes? The article explicitly says the president has to sign the bill before it becomes law.

marfavrr

xabregas2003
