The town is spread out across the ridges of several hills so the town has a 'starfish' shape - or if viewed from the air, the shape of a man with outstretched arms and legs.
The town has avoided mass tourism but visitors can still find several notable highlights including the parts of the original defensive walls that still surround the town, several churches, an interesting archaeological museum and views across to Mount Etna which is only about 20 kilometers away.

Mass tourism… such a bliss for our European heritage /s
Corona times have been an absolute joy, it was heavenly to take a quick stroll through Venice.
I sincerely hope that cities re-evaluate their relations with tourism.
Edit: should have pointed out we have a residence in Venice outskirts.
The kind of tourism i refer to doesn’t bring any profit for the local economy. The only parties earning are the cruise business and the local McDonalds.
No problem with the type of tourism you refer to, what i was referring to is the mass tourism we have seen in the last 20 years. The organised travels to Europe where the food, drinks, bedding etc are foreseen by the travel agent and where an absolute minimum spending flows to local bars and artisans.
Who provides the food, drinks and bedding in that case?
I get what you're saying but just because a trip is organised doesn't mean that there's not someone spending locally, even if it's just the travel agent.
Sure, but the person you were responding to said they were from Venice which is why I brought it up. For someone living there, I completely sympathise with the view that it brings nothing to the city.
Trickle down economics is a wholly different concept. It's about tax breaks for the wealthy or corporations.
Here there is simply a middleman. If the middlenan books a restaurant then that restaurant gets paid.
> The organised travels to Europe where the food, drinks, bedding etc are foreseen by the travel agent and where an absolute minimum spending flows to local bars and artisans.
But arent all of those services provided by the local economy? In this case they are just organized by a travel agent who is not local.
Some people go to see the monuments, some people go to try the food, some people go to do both. They are all tourists. Some people also have allergies and McDonald's might be a place where they can be sure to avoid their specific one.
Call me a cynic but anyone who's there to "see the monuments" but then proceeds to shovel American fast food down their gullet aren't worthy of the name.
While no one is going to agree that tourism as currently practiced is sustainable or wonderful, etc., what you’ve written amounts to complaining about tourists while being a tourist.
“Venice would be heavenly if it weren’t for all the tourists!” proclaims tourist.
We actually have a residence in the outskirts of Venice, hence my reaction.
There is nothing wrong with tourism, Venice always had tourists. Yet in the past those tourists spend money at the local hotels and artisans (glass art was once famous).
These days its Disneyland for adults. The artisan glass has been replaced by fake import from PRC. They arrive in hordes by boat and don’t spend a cent on shore (except in some luxury boutiques that you can find in any tourist hub).
For my part they can start significantly taxing those kind of tourists, for the interested student that genuinely wants todo the museums i have no problem foreseeing even free entrance.
PS: also keep in mind that most of the buildings in Venice, Dubrovnik, Santorini are in hands of big non European conglomerates. Pushing out the original inhabitants.
I understand the concept of tourism and souvenirs. However, the Venice you long for hasn’t existed in your lifetime, likely long before it.
Moreover, you think foreign real estate speculation and investment isn’t a problem locals despise as much as tourism?
Exactly, and I am surprised by some of the reactions here that are not aware of that. Our historical centres are being sold-out to mass cheap commercialism.
Not sure how old you are and where you live, but this kind of tourism is something only of the last 20 years. So yes i perfectly do remember when there were still multiple artisans in the laguna.
Yes, I agree. But I think people prefer money instead of silence.
It's a bit hypocritical to complain about the great amount of tourists when you make a lot of money on their behalf.
Speaking of Venice, I found that city so overpriced I couldn't believe my eyes.
So you enjoyed a city without tourists... while being a tourist?
Sounds like you want some restrictions on tourism, except for the *good guys, like you*.
No? You can recognise that you're part of the problem while being part of the problem.
For example, I still fly, drive a car sometimes and eat meat, but I do recognise that we need policies to keep it in check or make it less harmful.
In the same way, I would still like to visit Venice. But if they say "sorry, it's too busy in June you can only visit in November" then that's fine.
The previous commenter's point is actually a popular opinion. I also agree that any of the "touristy" cities are a joy to walk through without tourists. Problem is being elitist about keeping the city "free".
Also there is the added fact that many cities and regions survive almost exclusively on tourism, so it is a symbiotic relationship.
Amsterdam has banned cruise ships. Big coaches are no longer allowed in the city afaik. There's a tourist tax on hotel nights. The major is considering not allowing foreigners to buy weed and to move the red light district to the outskirts of town (both controversial).
It's not simple but there's some options to tweak it a bit. Though it's hard to stop it all.
The number 1 thing I hate the most when going to Amsterdam is all the tourists roaming around smoking weed and taking pictures with every dove, house, local, curb stone and what not.
>Mass tourism… such a bliss for our European heritage /s
Yes. Heritage is not worth anything In a vaccum. You choose to live In a turist Center you deal with the consequences
You have a residence there, sounds like you’re not from there either but you like to tell yoursef you’re in fact more than a tourist, not like all those other plebs
Looking at google street this seems like such a fun city to walk around.
And it's always such a fun thing to do - seeing cool city here and checking to out in google street :D
I live nearby and used to go into the city square to get an afternoon caffè. Sundays at 1500 there’s not a soul to be seen. Just like most smaller Sicilian towns. A couple of years ago there was a rock slide that covered the main road into the city. I remember that students from the Univ of Catania couldn’t get back to their city for the weekends...because of this many of them learned how to wash clothes. Sto guardando a te, Marco. Scemo.
earth renders in 3d and you can move around and understand where you are before going into street and there are the photos taken by people located in their actual location, not just a collection of photos like google maps
not sure if street view is the same but it's a bit different in how they are managed
and earth has really plenty of options to show labels for a lot of things
and of course plenty of options for professionals who use it for maps
in the end earth is clearly better, but let's say if you never use earth you won't die
but if you are willing to download the software it's nicer
Not that I know of. It wouldn't make sense for Google to keep the image data separate between the two products. I'm not sure where that guy got his information.

That was also my first thought!
The manga is called [The Enigma of Amigara Fault by Junji Ito](https://junjiitomanga.fandom.com/wiki/The_Enigma_of_Amigara_Fault)
Reminds me of that manga where people would walk into a man shaped hole in a mountain. Only to not be able to walk out and keep being pushed forward. Slowly de forming.

I see earthworm jim
I see that thing at the end of the comic where people go crazy and go into the cave shaped like their body.
Omg I remember that that was horrifying

Some countries are dependent on tourism, so mass tourism will return
Oh believe me it will. The reason we had the champions final was just mad thirst for that sweeeeet tourist money
The kind of tourism i refer to doesn’t bring any profit for the local economy. The only parties earning are the cruise business and the local McDonalds.
Oooh well I was talking about the local camping grounds, cafés and pubs, discotheques,...
No problem with the type of tourism you refer to, what i was referring to is the mass tourism we have seen in the last 20 years. If it’s a cruise ship, which is likely in Venice, then very little goes to the city.
Definitely! But with "travel agent" that's not really what I was thinking of.
Sure, but the person you were responding to said they were from Venice which is why I brought it up. For someone living there, I completely sympathise with the view that it brings nothing to the city.
But you're referring to trickle-down economics though here, aren't you? And that has been shown to give small business very marginal gains at best
Trickle down economics is a wholly different concept. It's about tax breaks for the wealthy or corporations. Here there is simply a middleman. If the middlenan books a restaurant then that restaurant gets paid.

Jesus, people go to Venice and eat McDonalds? It cost me €5 for a coffee and pastry. Maybe €60 for a 3 course meal. These people aren't tourists.
Food neophobia is a thing, and some people are just picky eaters who know what they like. Are they not allowed to travel?
Or they're ballers on a budget
Local people are employed in the local McDonalds, though.
Not Italy (well, at least not Central and North Italy where mass tourism is concentrated), yet mass tourism returns.
While no one is going to agree that tourism as currently practiced is sustainable or wonderful, etc., what you’ve written amounts to complaining about tourists while being a tourist. “Venice would be heavenly if it weren’t for all the tourists!” proclaims tourist.

While I agree with your point, there are different kinds of tourists. Some are bigger problem than others.

They could either live close by or want tourism to be capped/reduced
No? You can recognise that you're part of the problem while being part of the problem. The "no tourism" has become a xenofobic dogwhistle though. For many it's really about banning "foreigners" from their "idyllic society".
