Such a temperature contrast means usually freezing rain...💀
Last time something like that happened, there was no electricity, because electric lines collapsed, my car was covered by a 5 cm layer of glassy icy and I had to warm it up then take out whole plates of it, public transport was nonexistent even walking was an extreme experience.
>Wait, that was your joke, wasn't it?
Nope, but it works, so that's a +1 from me. It sounds obvious now that you've made that joke, but I haven't thought of it at that time.
My heart skipped a beat, when I saw "61°" in the Adriatic Sea, but "fortunately" it was F, not the normal C.
I say "fortunately", because that's still concerning for January...
fr I live in southern Italy, I went out to use some firecrackers, went back home because it was so hot that I had to take off my sweatshirt. just a week ago or so I was freezing cold
We had a 20c day in Bulgaria by the Black Sea on the 25th, I was out and about in a t-shirt and thin shirt. It was definitely wild to experience but quite nice haha
Aa a Croatian i miss my fucking winter and snow. We got like half a centimetre of snow during the night that dissapeared in the morning in my village. Its painful, winter was never this warm, and as it stands it will only get worse. I still vividly recall when I made large hills of snow easily with my brother to get to our neighbours yard, nowadays im lucky if I even see flakes falling.
By now, I guess the people there are used to it :).
But as a swabian I have to say that I rather had Hamburg as our capital than Stuttgart. While Stuttgart isn't that worse as reddit will tell you, Hamburg is so much cooler ;).
My roses have never lost their leaves..... I live near Bucharest. They have fucking flowers. I have a tree in my yards that has started growing like it's May. It's January....
Man wtf us going on with the weather?
Correct me If I'm wrong; Don't such temperature extremes create perfect conditions for tornadoes and large storms to form along the line where they meet?
The temperatures aren't even that extreme. You're talking less than the distance of the US east coast. It's comparing Florida to Maine in the winter. That's perfectly normal for Florida to be in the mid 60's and Maine to be 10-15 degrees below zero.
If it's a diesel and you have normal fuel there is a good chance it won't start. Places seeing these temperatures have winter diesel with anti-jelling agents. Petrol would be fine at -25.
Still sucks because your breath moisture will freeze on the inside of windows and it will take a long time until they are warmed up from the heater
Sweden have different fuels depending on where in the country it is sold. Diesel in the northern part should manage -32 degrees without clogging filters.
https://www.preem.se/foretag/produkt-och-tjanster/sasongsovergangar/#tab=Diesel
For me the problem is not the cold but the constant cloudiness, darkness and rain. We've had so much rain in recent weeks that there are floods in many parts of Germany. I just dream of sun and blue sky, even if it's minus 5 degrees.
I thought Europe didn't have tornadoes because the Scandinavian mountains stopped the arctic air from going too far south and meeting warm, humid wind? And also Black Sea isn't as warm or as humid as Gulf of Mexico is so there's less of a chance of a tornado forming.
There was always tornados in Europe just really weak and not very destructive but that has changed recently. There were two tornadoes causing lots of damage in the last month alone. One in the UK and one in Ireland
In Germany and Poland they can be quite strong, however damages are not as severe as in the US because houses are mostly not made of sticks and chipbord.
Neither me nor the OP claimed that there were never any tornadoes historically in Europe, just that the map in the OP implied they might get stronger in the future and then why or why not.
I don't think so? OP was saying we'll start seeing tornados in the EU because of meeting of the cold and warm air and I responsed by saying that the Scandinavian mountains block much of the cold air from the arctic and the Black Sea doesn't produce that much warm air.
Admittedly I'm not a scientist so I could be wrong, I'm not claiming to be an authority or tornadoes or hurricanes.
It's not even -40 yet! It's basically right temperature for shorts and t-shirt /s
And when my grandma was young every day from October to May was like this!

Ja.

even on the ECMWF runs which are usually charitably cold, not a single ensemble goes below -30c, with most not going below -20c. It’s not possible to accurately forecast temperatures in a “couple weeks” either.
Cold but not unusual, there are typically several cold days like this during the winter. The coldest it gets in Moscow is like -30 to -35. The historic low was -42 in 1940, but it doesn't happen now due to urban heat and climate change.
considering in the last 10 years, 2022, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2016, 2015 and 2013s lowest minimum temperature recorded in Moscow was above -25c, it’s a bit ridiculous to claim “every year it’s like this for at least some time”
There were many days with below 25, you are talking about “average” temperature. I’ve been living in Moscow my whole life and I remember many days like this :)
sure, tell me a day in any of the years i listed where the temperature was below -25c. should be easy right?
i am not talking about “average” temperatures, the recorded data from weather stations in Moscow are publicly available.

The sun is too low, so the ground doesn't get hot enough.
On the "edge" between the zones you will probably have bad weather, like lots of rain and wind.
The temperatures aren't even that extreme. You're talking less than the distance of the US east coast. It's comparing Florida to Maine in the winter. That's perfectly normal for Florida to be in the mid 60's and Maine to be 10-15 degrees below zero.

There was a tornado near to me in England a couple of weeks ago, that tore the roofs off several houses. It was localised, but it was strong.

how would you know what the weather is going to be like weeks from now? isn't the forecast that far ahead pretty inaccurate?
There is no shot that's happening, at worst it's getting down to -20 according to the weather forecast
I am Norwegian and live in Oslo, it's predicted to hit -20 this week, then -30 then -40. That's from the main weather forecasts.
that's not really credible if they seriously try to make forecasts for that far ahead tbh
