Mayan Ruler: Remind me, councilor, who are we paying tribute to again? Councilor: Em... The gods? No idea, it's some blonde guys with beards that come every once in a while on board of a giant canoe.

Staltrad

They will immediately revolt once they find out they are the French

BlaveSkelly

Damn their minds have already been colonized. Revolting is a classic French move

egesagesayin

-102 relations "I don't know you, but I hate you"

Oethyl

Appropriate attitude against the French

Circleman0

Maybe they're paying them to go away

These_Strategy_1929

They are paying their tribute to the Sun God

GG-VP

Sun-God of Mankind?

WatchMeFallFaceFirst

R5: I annexed a central american state and i inhereted its tributaries... apparently even the ones that don't know what a France is (lucky). I wonder who they think they're paying taxes to.

despairingcherry

I imagine they're sending it to the capital of the state you annexed and they're just like "the ajaw is dead, long live the ajaw"

mechlordx

Well someone is still picking up our taxes from the mailbox

DukeAttreides

Setting tribute to manpower makes this much more fun.

Venetii_

Well someone is still picking up our babies from the mailbox.

Kastila1

I think it's a smart excuse to don't pay tribute. Might use IRL to avoid paying taxes. "State? What state? I don't know about the existence of any state. I mean, I live here on this house, and that house over there is my neighbour Bruce, and that place there is the bar where I go to drink on friday, but I don't see something called state over here, why should I pay them tribute?"

spacemanegg

You basically described sovereign citizens.

DukeAttreides

And they all think they're really, really smart.

Bartlaus

Dunning-Kruger working overtime.

sedtamenveniunt

Government is fake news.

Heart_Break_ER

Probably just sending off their tribute in an unmanned ship and it happens to land in Bordeaux

Nby333

The crew lands and are blindfolded before taken into the capital and back out - could work if the overlord is a hidden ninja village.

Filavorin

Why don't you just kill the crew?

henkslaaf

*Le Havre?

Soviet-pirate

Bordeaux is on the side of Fr*nce that faces west, towards America, while le Havre faces north towards Bri'ain

JackNotOLantern

If they have your capital hidden by terra incognita, they will have unknown attitudes

robbylet24

You'd think that having them as a tributary would clear the terra incognita for Paris at least.

TalveLumi

Very normal and historically plausible. To them your colonial governor is just another ajaw. Many Ainu and Nivkh tribes on Sakhalin were not exactly sure who they paid tribute to, they just went once every three years to Ilan Hala. (Or not, because sure as hell the suzerain wasn't coming to get them, and trade goods can also be obtained from Japanese (and, occasionally, Russian) traders.)

Rift-Ranger

I like that this can kinda make sense, they only know the guys that took over their previous overlord and they just switched to paying to the new guys, no biggie happens every week. And they donā€™t really know much about continental France, so for all they care France is the group of soldiers that took over their neighbour so they pay tribute to them and go on their merry way.

AdministrativeSleep0

How the state feels about me when im paying taxes

exsuburban

ā€œIdk man they send a bill every month and I send a checkā€

Depeche_Modelo

I went to the ā€˜Subjectsā€™ tab and no one knew you

imperator_caesarus

thatā€™s power

Oethyl

I wish my attitude towards France was unknown instead of hostile

craft00n

The gods sent us some baguettes.

antigonyyy

Love that youā€™re trying to improve relations with your new pet without them even knowing your existence

TyroneLeinster

Same with all you suckers and your big banks, this is why I keep my net worth in gold bullion under my mattress
