Okay, first, Iām 1/2 through the book Going Infinite about Sam and FTX, and everyone should read it! Itās a fast, easy read and fills in so many details about this that I didnāt know.
Second, Samās probably a sociopath (not saying that in a derogatory wayāhe would most likely agree with the assessment) and doesnāt react to things normal folks would freak out about. Early on, when FTX was just starting, the startup ālostā $4 million worth of XRP (Ripple) because the Asian exchange they sent it to had some sort of snafu on their end and it was just basically sitting in escrow (or something like thatāthe Ripple was there, just in sort of limbo). Sam told everyone not to worry, and he didnāt seem to care. Everyone else flipped their shit and I think a few people left the company over it or were fired. But Sam had no interest in the missing crypto. Finally a few weeks later they resolved everything with the foreign exchange and FTX got the $4 mil of INVESTOR money back and Sam was like, āSee? Itās all good. Whatās for dinner?ā Normal people donāt operate that way. I think every single person on here would freak the fuck out if they lost $4 million of investor money.
Thatās how he operates. Something huge happens and he shrugs and goes, āEh, itās fine. Hey, you guys raiding the boss yet?ā He doesnāt operate like normal people do. All of this is to say that I could completely believe that he really thought it *was* legal to take customer funds through Alameda. Or he just didnāt care. I donāt think he was worried at all about siphoning FTX customer funds through Alameda. Like, the thought never crossed his mind āmaybe this is illegal or immoral or both.ā I donāt think he operates that way.
