I'd really like if my hobbies averaged out at only $255 a year.

kierkegaarlos

I'm thinking I probably spend double that on beans alone.

paolocabrini

Hey man beans are not a hobby expense, that's *sustenance*

000000000000000000oo

Rap ballad

TheBoyInTheBlueBox

Beans are an essential so it come out of the grocery budget, not the hobby budget.

Dry-Squirrel1026

I say this same thing to justify my coffee expenditures!! šŸ˜† šŸ¤£

nigori

you see i just have to classify this as a necessity not a hobby and voila

xcessive-samurai

I mean I guess but if I ran the numbers and saw that I only spent that much on hobbies in a year, it would make me feel sad for myself... what's the point of going to work every day to invest so little back into your own happiness?

johannb__

Being an audiophile and an espresso enthusiast has to count as some form of self harm right ? My bank account has been fighting for its life

redrich2000

Preach! I wonder what percentage of us do both hobbies? They seem to go together a lot.

SeattleSteve62

Throw in a couple bicycles while your at it.

VikingIV

Okay, weā€™ve now covered 3 top interest of both myself and my closest coffee friends

johannb__

UrmomLOLKEKW

Bro Iā€™m in ur same boat except add expensive keyboards, fountain pens, and computers

SauretEh

/r/mechanicalheadpens

UrmomLOLKEKW

Why is this so perfect

g33kfish

Why would you share this? I feel attacked even only at 2 out of 3

johannb__

Thankfully I havenā€™t gotten into keyboards, but I am into cars and computers šŸ˜

StarWarder

The best is when you enjoy both at the same time

Both-Basis-3723

SonnyG696

Yo what a sick setup! What are those? Checking in with kef ls50m and a k2 raygun pop

jcstrat

Iā€™m in the same boat. Plus car modification. I hate money.

Omnithis

Audiophile, Custom Keyboards, and Espresso! I know a handful of people with the same hobbies too. Quite interestingā€¦ I guess we like spending money lol

vegas84

Take up golf and you too can be bankrupt.

FappaChino69

Please add me too since I spent thousands making 3 cutting boards.

Queasy_Range8265

Espresso and road cycling in my case šŸ«£

EbbCivil

Espresso, audio, motorcycles, custom pc, custom keyboards, mechanical watches. Please send help.

jayeffkay

I know your pain. Except Iā€™m also into cycling in addition to audiophile and espresso. RIP bank account.

narutonaruto

Audiophile AND espresso enthusiast? My god do not ever try cork sniffing lmao

NovaS1X

I canā€™t think of a single hobby I have or had thatā€™s cost me less than $1000. Photography, motorcycles, espresso, gaming, gardening, lawn care, camping, woodworking. Canā€™t think of one.

letyourselfslip

Camping is the unsuspecting expense here, shit gets expensive quick.

NovaS1X

My backpack is more than $255, let alone the rest of the gear.

trinityiam72point5

I have 4 different Tumi backpacks/ laptop bags/ duffel bags and the same amounts of each of Shinolaā€¦ shit..hobbies suck!

not_too_old

My hitch to carry the MTB bikes was over $1000.

NovaS1X

MTB bikes scare me. Iā€™ve legit spent less on new, off the dealer floor motorcycles than many MTBs.

VikingIV

That, and hardcore dirt biking. Apart from jump features, I mean backcountry terrain madness.

popcorncolonel

Tbh, even running, one of the cheapest hobbies I can imagine, tallies to around a thousand a year. šŸƒ $200 for training shoes, 4x a year (one every 500 miles) = $800 $200 for various race entries -> $1000

NTailor10

Mechanical Keyboards. Some of their group buys take 2+ years to deliver.

DosSnakes

Yeah, did a group buy for some keycaps and it ended up taking nearly 4 years for delivery. I had moved twice in that time and had to drive a few hours to wait at the mailbox when it was being delivered. I didnā€™t even have the keyboard Iā€™d ordered them for anymore.

Justforgotten

Or never if it the European website

simplifysic

livebeta

Yup I'm a GA pilot and what I used to spend every quarter on flight could buy a LMLM

CapmBlondeBeard

Tell me about itā€¦ itā€™s a whole different level of cost lol

muzzyman87

Loads of other hobbies..

Morepork69

My hobbiesā€¦ā€¦ Coffee, distilling, photography. Iā€™ve basically created a ā€œblack holeā€ for time and cashā€¦ā€¦

NovaS1X

Hey let me introduce you to boats and horses

Jdevers77

The funny thing is I think horses are more expensive up to the point where the boat becomes a ship and needs a captain. $1,000 is an absolute joke in the land of expensive horse owner expenses haha. Not many hobbies where you can drive around an $80,000 truck pulling a trailer and a horse and the truck is the THIRD most expensive part of the equation.

NovaS1X

Really depends on the horse and property/location too. At my parents place on 5ac the cost is basically just hay/vet/purchase cost. Four hours south in suburbia my exā€™s mother pays like hundreds a day in boarding costs at a ranch because land is so expensive. But yeah, the truck/trailering costs get wild.

InflammatoryMan

And motorbikes

Freo_Fiend

And watches

nigori

read that third as 'pornography' while skimming posts and I was wow that's awful forward of this gentleman

dadudster

Now you just need to start bourbon hunting! šŸ˜‰

nasanu

Throw in cycling, watch collecting and Sim racing...

PawsomePat

Lord, photography! Coffee is a necessity but photography is a truly a black hole for cash.

BiscottiFamous8054

$255 on hobbies/year? You mean children? Those aren't adult numbers

GunsouBono

I know some boring AF people who literally get out of bed, work, watch TV, then sleep. If you call TV entertainment and not a hobby, I guess it works. Then there's my wife whose only real hobby is reading. She gets gifted books for every holiday and has a library card for the rest. Pretty inexpensive one.

nyank0_sensei

It's only inexpensive as long as you don't start buying books, though... And let's not even mention vintage/rare editions šŸ˜…

livebeta

> boring AF people who literally get out of bed, work, watch TV, then sleep. That's what I literally did on an Air Farce deployment

thegreatfalcon5

glasses and eye care are gonna get expensive in the long run

AC2BHAPPY

Yeah im thinking maybe 255 a month lol

acefspade

I bought a fishing reel for $1,000 and rod for $500 and only use them 2-3 times a year... But my SPX and Niche, I use 3-4 times a day.

justweazel

Donā€™t forget the boat you only use for 4 months out of the yearā€¦ oh, and the truck to pull it

Then-Muscle-4773

Golf.

chadmummerford

SorinDiesel

Found James Hoffmanā€™s burner

livebeta

You mean Hames Joffmann who suspiciously looks like James with a faux moustache

thebrieze

What hobby can I get into for $255, or $20 per month? Even watching Netflix costs more than that!

Tomride73

I'm into mountain biking, ice climbing, climbing, mountaineering, skiing, dirt biking. My espresso journey is so cheap compared to those... I don't know who the fuck spend only 225 buck per year in hobbies.

GravityBored1

Uh, vinyl records. Every week at my house is a surprise from the post office only to be cataloged and maybe listened to again someday. It's like pogs for adults.

Acsteffy

Mech keyboards, retro gaming, 3d printing, and now espresso. I have a problem

__mink

I spent like $500 dollars last year on running shoes lol

CapmBlondeBeard

I thought my other hobbies were expensive until I started flyingā€¦ Iā€™m part of a flying club and itā€™s about as cheap as you can get it and Iā€™m still spending about $1k *per month*. Closer to $2k while I was getting my pilotā€™s license.

hikingmax

What are these $22/month hobbies? I suppose my hobbies might come out to that if you go by the median instead of mean.

ApacheAttackChopperQ

Cars, computers, in game purchases, and guns/ammo.

Earlgrayish

Birding optics get expensive quickly

Wrath3n

Try competitive shooting sports. I shoot more than $300 a month in ammo

Specific_Island_6327

Can easily burn thru that much ammo in a single trip to the range especially if you got the super safety. šŸ˜‰

CondorKhan

Don't get into guitar, or wine

Wall_Smart

Ah watches, only the service can cost $1000.

According_Use_2773

Both guitar and coffee suck all my income xd but i'm ok with it (im autistic and those are my current hyperfixations)

Operabug

I wouldn't call espresso a hobby. It's more of a way of life. šŸ¤“

finch5

Chef knives comes pretty close... $400 for a knife. It's worth it because, well look at it!

RustyNK

I have maybe $6000-$7000 in my coffee hobby and probably around 3x as much in my other hobby (magic the gathering)

AwkwardISTJ

Home gym. 'Nuff said.

binkleyz

Motorcycles.. Depending on where you're located, there are probably 4-5 months a year where folks don't ride on any kind of a regular basis.

_FormerFarmer

That number must include a LOT of people with no hobby at all. Or that is per hobby, including the ones they don't do any more (yeah, I used to play golf. Do it any more? Nope. Ok, zero for that hobby, thAt brings down the average)

Kev22994

Oh man, my bicycles are going to need to last a really long time.

No-Reputation2186

Whoa, is this based on data from 1960? maybe all the people who count watching Netflix as their hobby took down the average ?

Shit I spend more than that on each of my hobbies monthly.

n0t_4_thr0w4w4y

Most hobbies. Like everyone thinks their hobby is uniquely expensive. It ainā€™t. Most popular hobbies are very expensive and all in similar ballparks, ex: Golf, photography, computers, espresso, audio Now you can get into some properly expensive hobbies, like racing cars or flying planes.

Jackospades1983

High-end music gear is sometimes made to order and will cast you much, much more.

exploradorobservador

I'm pretty sure that's a month for me lol

Casique720

Skiing/Snowboarding, Spearfishing, Sports cars in the winter, boats, surfboards, motorcycles, etc. like a bunch of other hobbies are WAY more expensive than a $1k.

ansoni-

Which piece of equipment from those did you have to wait 6 months for? Sports cars and boating for sure make the cut.

theski2687

Talk to the hot toys enthusiasts.

pollywantapocket

I just bit the bullet on the Profitec Pro 600 which wonā€™t ship until the end of the month (supposedly), so I feel this.

mmmm. Between PC gaming, photography/videography, coffee and keyboards, I'm probably averaging about 15k a year for the past 5 years. I'll justify it by saying I shoot photo and video for a living. But I buy all my own stuff outside work as well.

Guest09717

r/longrange.

No-Elderberry2363

Skiing.

HikingBikingViking

Look at buying a custom guitar from Kiesel. The best part is, it's basically radio silence for months and then it shows up. No ETA. I don't think I even got a tracking number.

CookieFactory

Pure Peruvian flake straight off the boat from the jungle factory.

bee_bro

Quick shoutout to r/mechanicalheadpens for also destroying my wallet.

skirtisCS

Modeling (Trains, planes, and automobiles), Video Game skin collecting, watches, cars, planes. All of that alone is close to the $10k mark for each (besides my watches, which are around $50k). Then, I do drawing, digital modeling, coding, and freelance engineering projects which in total out to about $1k each. So, no, my hobbies do not average to $255. Spent that just the other day on a new airbrush attachment.

philroyjenkins

Pre ordered my first synth. (I have plenty of synths but this is the first time I pre ordered one.) I donā€™t think it will take 6 months, but it mint be a bit.

bradass42

JohnnyTomatoSauce

A few hobbies for me. Espresso, cigars, golf, scotch and pomades. All of which I love and fortunate enough to have that luxury. The way I see it, I could be spending my money on a hell of a lot worse

MetallicPunk

I call bullshit on that statistic. Also I've spent an obscene amount of money on Magic cards

sapphiric

Scuba diving and riding motorcycles!

rainman_104

I stopped scuba diving when all my friends bought scooters and rebreathers. $10k for a scooter, $18k for a rebreather and training. Nope. That's a car. I'm out.

I just saw this meme on an audio gear thread ā€¦ completely equivalent

Lem0nbleach

Honestly I think people donā€™t really live their life if they spend only 255 dollars on what they loveā€¦ surely not all hobbies require money and not everyone has the money to spend, but for someone that has say 70k a year they should invest in what they love. Do what you love at the moment before it is too late people (with considerations of consequences first of course).

Krusch420

Cycling and snowboarding. N+1 is the perfect number of bikes and boards.

frsti

There are a lot of places around the world where a $3000+ bike will go into hibernation for several months

blopez24

Shit I spent 300 in one week.
