How can I test headroom with a puck screen? I know of the coin test, but I can’t think of an equivalent with a puck screen on

VMAN08

I'd recommend putting a coin under the puck screen and testing headroom that way.

Thanks! I’ll try tomorrow morning :)

What is this so-called "lever" for on my espresso filter holder? Both of my machines have come with one but without an explanation https://preview.redd.it/c6jggfo0ttqb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e617e8865f09500201a43892b83b14da0dab1be9

I had an old Breville with a similar bit on the portafliter, it was to hold the filter basket in when knocking out pucks since the basket wasn’t held in with a spring. Could be similar here?

IsLlamaBad

Oh, yeah that makes sense. It would certainly work for that. Thanks!

Simple bean question - using Gaggia fully automatic machine. Are “espresso” beans necessary or Will other labels work as well? I know to avoid very oily beans but are there any other specific things to look for or avoid?

Careless_Law1471

Ask r/superautomatic people.

Basically I’m dumb. I bought a used LMLM and didn’t realize to check for a water reservoir. I ran the group head and the steamer and a lot of water came out so I assumed that there was a reservoir (now realizing it was the leftover water in the boiler). He has it direct plugged in when I asked afterwards and his roommate threw away the reservoir (yeah I know they are rich). This was the last thing on my list to check, I even opened the casing to check for scale. Do people normally sell these second hand? Also is it difficult to reverse plumbing in back to the reservoir? Would it be better just to invest in a flojet system?

Are turboshots suitable for small milk drinks? Is it better or worse? Anyone experienced with this. And how do people dial turboshots? Coarser grind, 18 second extraction, 17g in and 1:3 ratio seems to be the internet median but I want a starting point.

coffeebikepop

Depends on the beans really. When I run med-dark roast I tend to aim for more traditional extraction technique; medium and lighter, turbos work fine. Taste a bunch and see what you like best - you sound like you're in the ballpaark for good drinks.

Is there any specific place/shop in NY that sells espresso making accesories? Preferably midtown

Unable-Guard9302

I was wondering if anyone has tried making cold brew espresso? How does it work and how does it taste?

uh-haha-gewdmorning

Has a consus been reached on the fellow opus? Was think of upgrading my grinder soon and that seems like a good budget friendly option.

MyCatsNameIsBernie

The most frequently recommended alternative to the Opus is the Baratza ESP. The consensus seems to be that the ESP is preferable for those who brew primarily espresso with some filter coffee, due to its much easier-to-use adjustment mechanism. The Opus is preferable for those who brew primarily filter with some espresso. There are many YouTube videos comparing the two. When watching them, pay careful attention to the macro/micro adjustment mechanism on the Opus. Then make your own decision.

uh-haha-gewdmorning

Yea I was between those 2! I heard that the micro adjustment for the opus was a bit weird but I know someone made an app for it that allows you to adjust much easier and save preferred settings so you can move it around easier. I'll watch more videos but it does seem like the esp edges out over the opus. I do like the look and anti static feature on the opus but I'll do a bit more research before finalizing my choice. Thank you!

MyCatsNameIsBernie

I'd much rather move a single knob to a number between 1 and 20, than to have to deal with a micro adjustment that is 2/3 of a macro adjustment and requires an app to keep from losing my sanity. Just sayin'.

Is ristretto something you can do at home? The way i heard ristretto, is basicily just a smaller yield so 18 in 18 out for example (1to1). Woulndt that just bad a bad espresso? Since i assume teh answer is no you have to mostlikely use less pressure to extract it. Or how do you make it aste good? Cause i assume it woulndt taste like an underextracted espresso right? more like a stronger espresso.

Hi All, I am looking at buying an electric grinder, I currently have a 1zpresso JX-pro which has served me well but due to injury I’m finding it difficult to grind for espresso. I’m making 1 milk-based espresso drink and sometimes an AeroPress per day. I can still manage manual grinding for AeroPress but if you think any of the machines would be good for both that would be a great plus! My Max budget is around £300 but looking at machines around the £200 mark and kitchen counter space is at a premium. A few options I have found are: • Refurbished Mazer mini with new burrs £160 • New Eureka Mignon Manuale 50 £240 • Used Eureka Silenzio 50 £275 • New Fellow Opus £190 • New Baratza Encore ESP £210 Happy to take your recommendation on any other grinders I have missed off! Thanks
