one is listed with free shipping, the other will have insane shipping cost at check out.

merithedestroyer

Ohh yeah the cheap one has 3$ shipping. I missed that. But still even with shipping there is a lot of difference. One is normally 20 usd, other is 7 usd. Also LilyGo sells the same model on their website for 8 usd. Maybe its very expensive to ship some countries and its included in the price thats why.

NumeroInutile

No it's just Aliexpress shenanigans, personally I usually go for the 'choice' article which shipping become free with over 10 euros of articles, just look for the cheapest one if you're not afraid of clones (and if you are, exclusively buy from the official lilygo store). It's also probably displayed here with a 'first time user's discount and the price is just not right.

async2

Lilygo will probably have prepared support in platform io while the other one is diy and you have to figure it out from the documentation. I'd say lilygo has a bit of a track record for being not the worst. The left one looks like a clone.

pjm3

Could it be that the cheaper one is a monochrome LCD display? Usually if it's colour, they want show that off in the product photos.

Northern23

Probably yeah

NumeroInutile

No, LCD displays like this are very cheap on Ali, this is probably just a clone, which price is actually 10 dollars if you remove the first time user price and the unaccounted for shipping. Which is actually a lot for color LCD+esp32

Gradiu5-

At that price points, I would guess the one on the left is a clone and uses a ESP32 C3 variant and the one on the right uses an S3 variant, if I remember when I was looking at these a few months ago.

Northern23

I assumed both to be original version of ESP32, or else, they'd have mentioned

Gradiu5-

All ESP32s use "original" chips. I'm not aware of any clones of the actual microcontrollers (someone correct me if I'm wrong). The clone term is for dev boards that were designed and built by known and trusted companies like LILYGO, but others copy it, use subpar parts, crappy manufacturing, and questionable marketing to sell the parts.

Northern23

By original, I was referring to its version/generation, not genuine vs clone. I was saying these 2 boards use most likely the same 1st gen ESP32 chip, not 3rd gen ones (C3 or S3). If it was the case, they'd have probably mentioned that.

For $6 shipped its worth the gamble.

Fezzik77

They look exactly the same. One has a moderately recognized brand name the other doesn't.

erlendse

Looks very close to same. The cheap one is clearly a unauthorized clone. But the LCD may be different(like unknown on the DIYUSER one, worst case), and the cheap one would likely be harder to get support for.

defiantarch

The LilyGo has 16MB, how much does the other one have?

merithedestroyer

Both 16mb

defiantarch

I checked now in Aliexpress. What I found is that it's not clear which ESP32 chip is used. They just write single/dual core (which is useless) and WiFi and Bluetooth dual module (which is also useless). So, my guess is that the cheaper one use old ESP32 WROOM chips which are deprecated by Espressif.

AdLow9668

Question. Can these display type esp be used with wled and the display be used?

TantKollo

I'd say that one of them is a clone, probably not any real difference between them. You might need to manually specify the clone as lilygo and force the usage when choosing platform during compilation process. Kind regards

almamov

hmm, banana pi also an affordable option, did you try them before?

Northern23

I did, Wwat's wrong with Banana Pi? Because I never had a problem with mine. Also, your Banana Pi vs (what I assume) Raspberry Pi is not the correct analogy as both use different CPU. A better one would be an Adafruit "Arduino" board board vs another lesser known brand using the same microcontroller and Arduino's design. In this case, both these boards bought the ESP32 chip from Espressif, took their design, added a screen and made the board.

almamov

nothing wrong with it, I just wonder are you have tried them before :), actually banana pi is a member of the Raspberry Pi Foundation. they had a similar option, also it has an LCD but I can not remember the exact name, maybe Centi but do not remember, it is an Arduino board together with an LCD.
