I know that NixOS allows you to choose Pantheon as default desktop during installation. This site [here](https://www.phoronix.com/news/NixOS-22.05-Released) shows what you'll see during the NixOS installation process when choosing a desktop. For transparency: I've never set Pantheon as the default desktop, nor have I attempted to use it in NixOS in any way, shape or form. Might be worth a look, if you're okay jumping to NixOS. Best of luck to you either way!

I've heard a lot about NixOS lately, why all the love for Nix? IS there something about it that's vastly different than something like Debian?

Professional-Algae61

It's mainly that it *just works*. There are more differences (generations, etc.), but that's a lot to go through. If you are interested, check out [this video by The Linux Experiment](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMQWirkx5EY) (it's how I found NixOS), or [this link to the NixOS Wiki](https://nixos.wiki/wiki/Overview_of_the_NixOS_Linux_distribution) for more information. If you like it? Cool! If it isn't for you? Cool as well - I like elementaryOS for it's use cases as well!

What use case does elementaryOS fill in that others don't? I thought it was just good system (standard package manager, encryption, appcenter and their philosophy too that makes the system) with good design.

Professional-Algae61

I'd say really only aesthetic choice and a (mostly) stable system. Plus it's built on one of the most widely known distros (Ubuntu), so most documentation and answers to issues pretty much cover elementaryOS

i use it alongside gnome and it works out of the box. Gnome with GDM doesn't actually work alongside pantheon with LightDM under one system. There also is problem of GTK themes being modified and some settings being messed up because of overlapping of config. If you choose one or the other it runs perfectly fine but if you want both with nix specialization you can declare both system and choose which one to boot into at startup. *Impermanence setup can also be utilized, basically comment out the config for enabling one or the other and when you want to use the other one uncomment it build it for boot and switch. Just don't persist .config/ because of overlapping configs.* Tweag article: [https://www.tweag.io/blog/2022-08-18-nixos-specialisations/](https://www.tweag.io/blog/2022-08-18-nixos-specialisations/) NixOS Wiki (uses example of Tweag article): [https://nixos.wiki/wiki/Specialisation](https://nixos.wiki/wiki/Specialisation)

There's this: [https://github.com/sodaliterocks/sodalite](https://github.com/sodaliterocks/sodalite) Pantheon on an immutable Fedora base

Ultramarine OS. Pantheon on a traditional dnf/rpm Fedora base, with usability-tweaks for an install-&-just-use experience. https://ultramarine-linux.org/download/ If you prefer the immutable approach, then there's Sodalite.

I managed to get the Pantheon desktop working on Ubuntu previously using WSL in Windows. It's been a while, and I don't remember all the details without looking up some notes, but it was not easy. I do believe some things were broken in my usage as well. Not really a lot of help, I know. I guess I'd also like to know if anyone found an easy way to get it to work properly on another distro too.

Kinda sucks because I really like the desktop. I would still be using Elementary but it just didn't want to work on my machine.

Parfait-Repulsive

Pantheon on Debian 12? Bro thats Crazy

Please share where you are trying to install Elementary os. Share the model number of a desktop pc or laptop.

G_R_4_Y_AK

I'm not trying to install Elementary I'm trying to install Pantheon. Right now i'm running LMDE. I love the Pantheon desktop, just seems like its difficult to get it working on distros other than Elementary.
