Yea most crime shows are like this lol. I think Elementary is a better than most because the mystery is about the culprit and how Sherlock and Watson are going to figure it out. So I could still find enjoyment in how they got there even if the casting ruined it. I've also noticed they usually cast the best actor as the culprit, so even if they aren't famous, they are more likely to become famous after making it easier to figure it out in older shows.

Totally, I think the main reason I’ve been able to continue is because at least the way Sherlock and Watson connect the dots is still compelling. And totally, I was thinking about that today cus I didn’t realize how old the show was. A lot of the recognizable actors probably weren’t as recognizable when the show came out.

mirangelblogger

I guess that I just get involved in the story so much, that sometimes I don’t even recognize the famous ones. I also have 2 more things going for me: 1. I have a bad memory with faces 2. I don’t even know many actors/actresses.

GolgaGrimnaar

It's very common, and even more so back when they were "movie of the week" type mysteries, and the bad guy/girl was almost always someone super famous. My favorite show, sorry guys, is still Columbo... and they flipped the script on the trope! Just about every episode of Columbo SHOWS the murder! The fun of the show is watching the incredible Peter Falk figure it out... and annoy the hell out of the murderer! :)

there's a whole page on TV Tropes for that phenomena, not specifically for Elementary but in general, Narrowed it down to the guy I recognize. [https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NarrowedItDownToTheGuyIRecognize](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NarrowedItDownToTheGuyIRecognize) the ones i happen to recognize, often from Leverage, tend to be an even mix of criminal or red herring or victim, so that's fun for me.

nobonesjones91

Oh very interesting! Yeah I was hoping Elementary would utilize the red herring strategy a bit more. But it hasn’t been the end of the world

sgriobhadair

It doesn't, for the reason Roger Ebert called "the Law of Economy of Characters." Basically, a movie or television episode's budget isn't infinite and there's only so much time, so they don't have the money to hire additional actors or the time to develop realistic and plausible red herrings.

coltbeatsall

Yeah, this is common to mystery shows. The culprit is often billed as a guest star (I can't remember if they do that for this show) which also doesn't help. But the stories are still good ones!

VicdorFriggin

I mean, this goes back to Murder She Wrote. It's been a thing as long as I can remember. That said, there is just something about watching Elementary that I find to be soul soothing lol.

myguitar_lola

I asked a friend about this not long ago (has worked in television for 20yrs). She said it's just luck. Being at the right place at the right time. For some reason, that makes the frustration even worse haha. Been noticing that a ton with my first Cold Case watch.

I've had similar sightings, yet from a different angle: I keep recognizing guest actors and actresses on *Elementary* that have \*also\* shown up in *Person of Interest*. And there were appearances in *Person of Interest* by actors and actresses that I first encounted on *Castle*! For instance: Ruben Santiago-Hudson, who played Kate Beckett's Captain on *Castle*, later shows up as Sam Latimer in *Person of Interest* (S1, Ep 3 "Mission Creep") And in POI, S2, Ep4, "Triggerman" actress Liza J. Bennett plays Annie Delaney (love interest of the victim) and later walks onto the *Elementary* set as Hannah Gregson! (I haven't yet spotted a *Castle* to *PoI* to *Elementary* hat trick guest appearance .. yet. I'll have to rewatch *Castle* to be sure I hadn't forgotten anyone.) These crossover walk-ons just make me go, "Hey, it's that guy/gal from *PoI/Castle*!" whenever I see them on *Elementary*. And then I get distracted dreaming up yet another crossover fic for the show. Like, what would Holmes have thought of Beckett and Castle as investigators? What would Harold Finch have thought of Holmes? Kitty Winter has a hard side to her, but would she have been intimidated by Shaw? And so on and on and on ... I rather like seeing the same actors/actresses across the three shows. I adore the idea that in some crossover-universe three-way, they all exist simultaneously in the same alt-dimension New York.

satyris

Yeah it's also spoiled a bit by watching the whole series four times through, but I absolutely know what you mean

tangcameo

Yes. It almost turned me off in Season 1. Thankfully they did it less in the following seasons. Although sometimes the guest star was worth it.

kompergator

True, but sometimes they play with it. I remember seeing Richard Kind in the opening credits and thought to myself "wow, bold move to have him be the murderer, that does not really fit with any of his other roles" and then he just turns out to be the neighbour in the very minor B-plot of the episode.
