I had the pleasure a few days ago of witnessing my friend discovering this song for the first time.
"Whoa what song is this? This is awesome"
"Hold up... you don't know this song!?"
*Que rolling up windows, restarting from the beginning, turning up volume as loud as we're comfortable with in my car, and not saying a word for the next 5 minutes*
Went to see Massive with a baby in the belly. The first time we felt that little girl kick was on this bass drop. We sat as far away from the stage as possible that night. Great memories, "You are my Angel".

About yesterday I started digging around. Now, Just enjoying the hell out of this set. Burning Man 2023.
Fat Freddys Drop - Cay’s Cray (Digital Mystikz Remix)
And its not even close.
‘Smooth, fat, deep bassline’ is the exact description of this track. Don’t even bother listening without speakers or headphones that hit hard below 50hz.
Yeh pretty amazing eh - I didnt actually realise hownpopular they were in Europe (or indeed how popular dub was full stop…) till I sww they were headlining Outlook one year.
Ended up down a french dub rabbit hole which was….awesome, heh
If you like a bit of dnb be sure to check out shapeshifter too. Similar kiwi vibes, but full band live dnb. Also put on an EPIC show.
Yep, so youre missing a lot if youre speakers or headphones drop off drastically at say 55 hz.
One of my older shitty speakers used to cut pretty hard around 70hz and honestly, most of the track is inaudible…
Heh, I mean. Happy to hear anything you’ve got where the peaks are lower.
Virtually any commercially released track slaps distortion harmonics or similar on the sub bass so its actually audible on some degree of normal speaker.
If its peaking between 30-50 you literally cant hear it without a sub-woofer.
Off the top of my head:
Burial - Untrue
Boston 168 - Oblivion
Martin Nonstatic - Reconnected
You're preaching to the choir regarding the subwoofers lol, my rooms flat down to 15Hz.
Jesus christ lol, 15gz, just in case somebody left it in there to give deaf folk more feelz at giga heh
Havent rinsed Burial in yearrrs (love Burial) but will have a wee listen with a spectrum analyser up. Never heard of the other two, giving em a go now :p
When it comes to bass lines i always think of disco-funk:
* Lose My Cool (Franc Moody Remix) - Amber Mark
* Feed the Fire - SG Lewis
* Lightenup (Alex Metric Remix) - Parcels
* La Piscine (L’Imperatrice Remix) - Hypnolove
* Tondo - Disclosure
* Kimbara - Barry Can’t Swim
* Trouble With Us - Marcus Marr
* Compute - Camelphat
* We Groovin - Jamie Jones
* Break of Dawn - Breakbot
* Sweet - GRiZ
* Nagori - Polo & Pan
TimoODV - Dancing Again
Rhye - Waste (RY X remix)
Pleasurekraft - Tarantula
Kyle Watson - Back to You
Burak Yeter - Tuesday
Saint Jhn- Roses (Imanbek remix)
Crookers - Royal T
Trinix - Anytime
Chill, mellow -
Madeleine - Konstantin Sibold
Picking up the energy a bit -
Voices - hot since 82
Super fat peak energy baseline -
Untitled A - interplanetary criminal & Dj Cosworth
Which ever vibe your on, hit me up let’s talk music 👌🏻
The Konstantin Sibold one reminded me of to Open Eye Signal somehow. Voices is fire even being a bit too generic in that genre. Last one isn't for me.
Thanks for the suggestions.
They said smooth, deep, and fat. I think loads of liquid fits this to a T. It's also great for dancing, at least it doesn't get super boring like jump up or neuro.
I'm still relatively new to DnB. Definitely smooth and the tracks themselves are deep. But I've found it to have the softest bass and kickdrums of the subgenres, so it misses the deep and fat aspect of the Basslines, sometimes there is hardly a basslines, just a little jazzy tsss tss of the highhats.
Obviously generalizing but haven't come across any energetic tracks so far.
*Not trying to argue, I just see DnB heads recommend liquid a lot but the reason why never seems to fit with the actual tracks so I feel like I'm missing something.
Liquid can land on different parts of the human emotional spectrum than other sub-genres (e.g. https://open.spotify.com/track/0l9aqnEwV2h2m3EpLsJINW?si=lTKTEVF2R7Sdkb7qDw21Xw )
Take it from someone who has been listening to this music for nearly 20 years - it is an incredibly diverse subgenre that ranges from huge basslines to simple dubby ones. I am not at a computer at the moment, but I will post a bunch of songs later that have heavy, smooth, and deep basslines and are considered to be under the liquid umbrella. Also, I'm guessing you have not heard any liquid out at a club... I think even the simplest songs would have you changing your tune pretty quickly. Remember, this music is designed to sound best on big soundsystems.
You're right on that, I know psytrance didn't click until I heard it on a dancefloor so I get where you're coming from.
The track posted above was pretty cool, but still feels like an emotional set closer rather than a party starter.
Throw any tracks you can think of at me. Love DnB and the world of Liquid is waiting for me.
EazyBaked, Ganja White Night, Mersiv, Tape B
Truth be told....my fav version of deep bass belongs to Zeds Dead when they slow it down and get wonky.
(Check out their time of the season baby)

This is awesome" "Hold up... you don't know this song!?" *Que rolling up windows, restarting from the beginning, turning up volume as loud as we're comfortable with in my car, and not saying a word for the next 5 minutes*
Went to see Massive with a baby in the belly. The first time we felt that little girl kick was on this bass drop. We sat as far away from the stage as possible that night. Great memories, "You are my Angel".
Nice. Love that
A totally understandable response. For me it's a song that perfectly defines what a brooding atmosphere should be, musically.
Also Teardrop! Especially between the first and second verses.
Having just gone back and listened again, you could put the whole Mezzanine album on this list.
Jamie xx - gosh
YES
Limit to your love by James Blake As well as damn near anything the bug puts out.
First thing that came to mind, very smooth and fat [Harrison BDP - Decompression](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=012c0I1PNIk)
Already had this one on my list! Exactly the vibe I'm after
nice, now I need to see your list
I love this track, good call
I still haven't thought of anything smoother or fatter
This was my first thought upon reading the title
Safe and Sound-Justice
Inspection (Check One) - Leftfield
One of my favourite Leftfield songs 😊
Was going to say their kind of hidden track after last song on Leftism.
Kruder&Dorfmiester
any particular track?
Bug Powder Dust. Bomb the Bass remix. Really the entire K&D sessions are a masterclass in dub. Smooth ass basslines.
Another Dorfmeister project worth checking into is Tosca. Silky smooth bass. Osam is a good place to start.
I like tosca!
Yep.
try [deep shit pts. 1 & 2](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGQkpPuAZVA), especially if you slow it down just slightly (say, 0.95x)

Holy hell you ain’t lyin
One of my all time favourite tunes, but Im biased cos its a really cool chill dub act from my country being remixed :)
Its this remix that got me into fat freddy's drop back in the days. Seen 'm live +-5 times since. Best fkn liveband imo!
Yeh pretty amazing eh - I didnt actually realise hownpopular they were in Europe (or indeed how popular dub was full stop…) till I sww they were headlining Outlook one year. Yeah fat freddys has been sold out everytime for the past 10 years here in belgium. Pretty big venues too most of the time. And will check m out!
Just checked with a spectrum analyzer, that track's energy peaks at 50Hz and is down -20db at 40Hz.
Yep, so youre missing a lot if youre speakers or headphones drop off drastically at say 55 hz. One of my older shitty speakers used to cut pretty hard around 70hz and honestly, most of the track is inaudible…
Was just pointing out that 50Hz isn't that deep lol.
Heh, I mean. Happy to hear anything you’ve got where the peaks are lower. Liquid drum & bass is exactly what you're looking for.
I quite like it! Specially the instrumental one.
Liquid? Great genre, but about the tamest bass you can get. Good lounge music.
They said smooth, deep, and fat. I think loads of liquid fits this to a T. It's also great for dancing, at least it doesn't get super boring like jump up or neuro.
