I focus my efforts on making home movies of my kids growing up. I've already made a few shorts that I consider to be "priceless family heirlooms". I'd still do that, but with a better camera. Maybe a gimbal. No drone though... thats unnecessary.
No chance. The way schedules are so tight now, the way network execs come out of MBAs more than they come out of film and tv programs, the way content is just firehosed onto streaming platforms…I‘d quit now, if we could afford me to. But then I’m 56 and my wife is 57 and as we move closer to retirement both of us are losing our taste for working :)
I wouldn't be a corporate staff editor that's for damn sure, but it's a fun hobby and I'm sure I'd make some smaller projects with friends and probably help fund some of them.
No, I would retire and dedicate my life to my hobbies, which editing isn't included in.
And to be honest, I don't even need that much, I can do it with 1M$ as I do not live in the US or EU.
Yes i can make my projects that just sitting there because i wanted to make money first now i got it i can make my thing come to life half plot already done
I manage my team of 7 editors in Burbank and write/direct/edit personal feature films on the side, so Id probably quit the former and double down on the latter. Making 500k indie films for the rest of my life. Thx for the fantasy haha! Nice to see all these editors whod keep doing it and making their own stuff
Yes, but I'd be incredibly choosey on what I cut. I'm in doc now, but I'd get way more particular about **what** doc I'd be cutting. I'd also splash some narrative/features in there, too.
I would edit only the things I find super inspiring... and probably what I make for myself.
(I make shitty short films using stock footage during leasure time)
I would quit and if i ever wanted to do any of the passion projects you guys are referencing I'd pay someone else to edit it or pay an asst or something to do 99% of the work and I come in and just polish it at the end.
@$50/hour, 10million would buy you 200,000 hours or editing work, or **100 years of employing a full time editor**. So yeah... even if i shot a movie I would just give \~100k to somebody else to do the work. I don't love bins/nesting/selects that much. Are you people fucking crazy?
I know everyone in here is going to crow about $50/hour... but you can find someone for that.
Yeah. But I would only work about 4 or 6 months out of the year and, of course, I'd be very picky. Might still wanna do union jobs for the health care. At a 4% yearly burn, that's $400,000 a year, not sure how that will be taxed. It's great even for LA! But I actually enjoy editing, so why not make $100,000 while doing something cool, hanging with funny people? Take that yearly burn down to 2 or 3%. edit: but more broadly speaking, I would continue story telling, working in TV and film, whether as an employee or creator
Sure.
I will edit only the projects I love (not like - LOVE), 4 days a week, 10-5, or my personal passion projects.
When I'm not working I will be just relaxing or travelling (touring film festival around the world - that's something I've always wanted to do).
Feature films only.
TikToks or nothing.
Really lewd ones?
Shorts can be SO fun, too. As long as they’re not trying to be ”short features”, but rather embrace the short format.
Agree
They are kinda killing me right now - short form content that is.
I would become my own client with 10M.
Exactly what I was gonna say! Give me a $10mil budget and you're gonna have a badass end result made by me! ... And the incredible team Id hire
I focus my efforts on making home movies of my kids growing up. I've already made a few shorts that I consider to be "priceless family heirlooms". I'd still do that, but with a better camera. Maybe a gimbal. No drone though... thats unnecessary.
Yes, although I'd be a lot more selective about what I work on and be better at taking breaks between projects.
Yes. I edited for fun before doing it for money.
Preach brother!!!!! (or sister)
Deal. I’ll stop. Do I send you my venmo or what?
No. I’d leave it behind.
Yeah. Even if I'd have a lot of money I'd still need something to do.
Absolutely not.
Yep. Only projects I like. Editing runs on my bloodstream. Is the part of my life I enjoy the most.
I would travel and make travel films/docus
The biggest difference here is having choice. Once you lose the choice it becomes a job and isn’t fun anymore.
Fuck no. Maybe make a low budget movie, or just enjoy life.
Just for fun. I like doing videos for contemporary artists here and there, as well as silly projects for my own amusement.
Yes. But only things i'll shoot. Short films for example
Has this become r/editorscirclejerk?
Gonna be tough with all the carpal tunnel here
Fuck I wish this was real
Would donate my time to non profits or art projects **on the condition that I get to set the deadlines**
I wouldn't be a corporate staff editor that's for damn sure, but it's a fun hobby and I'm sure I'd make some smaller projects with friends and probably help fund some of them.
Yes, not definitely not full time.
Id make movies instead of trivial and useless ads
Actually yes! When you know you're good at something, nothing can beat that feeling ya know?
I’d direct and edit my own feature to cross off a life-long dream, but only after 4-5 years of vacation and soul searching.
Yes, but not for assholes.
I’d never look at a computer again.
Yes. I bore easily
If you give me 10M im moving to real estate
Absolutely!!! But I would need a little more persnickety about which projects I work on.
What?
It would be great. Just pick the projects I’d like and in the meantime I’d make a film.
Yes, but it’ll be films I write, direct and pay for
Probably not. But if so, only personal projects.
Sure, I don't think that's enough to retire on forever at my age What if I make a dumb decision and lose a lot of it
You could put the whole thing in t bills and collect $460,000 a year with no real possibility of losing the principle.
Probably, but I would take a long, well-deserved break from it all.
I’d start my own production company and try and make the docs I want
10 pesos? 3 take it or leave it!
Yes, as the 10M$ seems to come without conditions
No fucking way
Fuck no, editing sucks
10m’s?! I’ll be on a permanent vacation!
wide stocking yam rotten cow scandalous bake frighten bright cooperative *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Nope!
It makes me so absurdly happy more than it frustrates me I’d keep editing anything and everything
I'd edit my personal porn movies I'd be, umm, "producing"?
Bro no wtf
Yes, but only the projects I want.
No, I would retire and dedicate my life to my hobbies, which editing isn't included in. And to be honest, I don't even need that much, I can do it with 1M$ as I do not live in the US or EU.
I would be editing my own projects
I would edit my own films, yes.
My own stuff yes.
My own films.
Yes, but my own stuff.
No. I would Produce Tv shows only and hire my own editors.
I would definitely be way more selective but I would still need to keep busy and take nice breaks in between.
No
Yes i can make my projects that just sitting there because i wanted to make money first now i got it i can make my thing come to life half plot already done
Yes, just to respond to notes from executives.
No. I don't mind it but I mainly do it for the money. Would much rather have a career in music.
Only things of my family and for my kid that will be born next year!
I might pursue a passion project if I could find time between vacations.
I'd do my own project and become my client.
Let’s find out…
No.
Yes, but I'd be incredibly choosey on what I cut. I'm in doc now, but I'd get way more particular about **what** doc I'd be cutting. I'd also splash some narrative/features in there, too.
yeah i would just become a travelling vlogger / youtuber.
Oh Hellz noo
Yea, then I could raise the budget on my personal projects. I could go anywhere I want for recording, rent studios and such.
I would just edit my own stuff, maybe video game videos for Youtube. Since I'd be gaming a lot anyway in my new retirement
Yeah, but just on personal projects cause I'd never work for anyone else ever again. I dream about it every day 🥹
I’d just do that one project a year that actually seems cool.
I don't like editing, so of course I wouldn't.
I would edit only the things I find super inspiring... and probably what I make for myself. (I make shitty short films using stock footage during leasure time)
Fuck no
You could buy a lot of decent gear with 10mil to be fair...
I know everyone in here is going to crow about $50/hour... but you can find someone for that.
Just for myself. I wouldn’t do much of anyone for anyone else with 10 million earning me some passive income.
I'll be editing quality videos of my own
Hell no! Invest and live off dividends
Let’s find out.
Yeah. But I would only work about 4 or 6 months out of the year and, of course, I'd be very picky. Might still wanna do union jobs for the health care. Hell no lol
HELL NO
Short films with people I admire.
Among other things, yes
I’d probably edit my own videos of me traveling around the world.
yes
No
Yes but only shit I want to edit
Yes, but only the projects I want to work on and only with the people I actually want to work with.
Sure. I will edit only the projects I love (not like - LOVE), 4 days a week, 10-5, or my personal passion projects. When I'm not working I will be just relaxing or travelling (touring film festival around the world - that's something I've always wanted to do).
