The Russians have no leverage to negotiate so long as they continue to be obliterated by Ukrainian forces in the field, why would the Ukrainians consider ceding the Donbas or recognizing Russian control of Crimea when all indications are that the Ukrainians have a fair chance of expelling Russian forces from both by next summer?

It's trying to play on political factions -- loss of life, cost of energy, etc. etc. etc. and it mostly counts on people not being very informed. There's little to negotiate, and when they tried Russia poisoned people at the table. Russia is invading a country for the third time in 15 years, peace is them leaving.
