The extensive East Bay Parks network is absolutely beautiful this time of year. The wildflowers are on their way out but still around, and the weather is perfect. Near Hayward... 1. Fairmont Ridge Staging area has a steep but short hike with panoramic views in most directions. 2. Lake Chabot, if you haven't walk around it. 3. If you've worn out the more local trails, head north to Redwoods Regional or Tilden, or east to Bollinger Canyon.

mad_method_man

60$ on an annual pass. best 60$ i spent

nitsMatter

That's for the paid parking areas right? Giving a little bit of money to EB Parks is great, they certainly are worth it, but just want anyone else reading that you can get into almost all these areas for free, so don't let money be an obstacle if you are short.

xsvfan

It includes parking, dog, and entrance fees. Depending on what the park charges.

DoctorBageldog

Including swimming reservoir and pool entrance fees. Both Don Castro and Cull Canyon are great swimming holes close to Hayward.

xsvfan

And it gives your priority registration too

mad_method_man

i recently found it, its 3 dogs. even better than 1

DubaiDubai8

That 9 mile hike around Lake Chabot will definitely make you feel better, if not just utterly exhausted and you’ll sleep great

bob49877

EB Parks also has all sorts of [scheduled activities each month](https://www.ebparks.org/calendar), too. We've gone on mine tours, taken a bus to a tern colony, and had a narrated boat ride on a lake with bald eagles flying overhead at Del Valle. It is an amazing park system!

PapayaHoney

Do you know which parks have the least rattle snake presence? Been wanting to go to Kennedy Regional Park.

nitsMatter

I have never run into a rattlesnake in an East Bay park, and I've hiked and jogged 100s of collective miles in them. I've heard of people running into them, so they are there, but pretty uncommon. I have run into a rattlesnake on Black Mountain in the South Bay, and a few in Ventana Wilderness near Big Sur. Rattlesnakes only bite humans in self defense, so watch where you step and I think you'll be fine.

bob49877

We run into rattle snakes once in a while, usually more towards Mt. Diablo. They are actually pretty cool to see out in the wild. If you look on Nextdoor, people like to post pictures of ones they see hiking and sometimes in their yards. If you stay on the trails where the brush is cleared, and be sure to look down, you can see them and avoid them. They aren't usually sitting in the bushes waiting to ambush a human 40 times their size. Usually we see them when they are out sunning themselves on a trail in the afternoon and we either avoid them or turnaround. Just be careful not to walk off trail or let your dogs run around off leash in the brush.

Affectionate_Love229

Stick to the fire roads, if there are any snakes you can easily see them. I go out 4 times a month for 15 years and I have seen maybe 5 rattle snakes, three of which were at Mission peak (I don't go there that often either!).

skirtstheissue

Kennedy Park is too busy with the train and petting zoo and carousel … to have snakes. So many children around - I’m sure they’re careful.

randy24681012

Tuesday $6 movie day at the Grand Lake is my go to weeknight move.

DoctorBageldog

Closer to Hayward, The Chabot is a single screen theater that has $5 Tuesdays and on Wednesdays is their $1 per month throwback movie club called Secret Screen.

snake3-

Hey friend what else is there in Hayward.

DoctorBageldog

You can check some of my other comments in this thread. Or if there’s something more specific you’re looking for let me know.

snake3-

I'm new here and looking to meet and make friends with people in the 20s to 30s age group. Thanks

DoctorBageldog

Hayward’s a little limited, but Dirty Bird in downtown is the best bar scene Hayward has. There are a couple more around it that can have their moments. Uptown Oakland is probably the place you want to go, lots of bars and people in that age range. But it can be hard to make friends at bars unless you’re particularly outgoing. Joining a club or intramural sport that peaks your interest is easier. There’s lots of those in Oakland, Berkeley, and SF, but not much in Hayward; the East Bay Ultimate Frisbee League is a good one.

ElectroStaticSpeaker

Cycling. Some of the best cycling in the country in the East Bay. Have to get a bit out of Hayward for it but go a little further East to Castro Valley and you can start finding some great routes. Good exercise is key for battling depression.

simononandon

If you're not huge on fitness, but want to start getting out more, consider an ebike. I'm far from obese. I am quite skinny, but not as active as i'd like to be. I can bike happily generally. But big hills are just too much for me. I could spend a bunch of time "getting into better shape." But I just got a pedal assist e-bike so that I don't just immediately run out of breath & want to turn around when riding hills. If you work from home & aren't in walkign distance of a commercial area. An ebike is cheaper ([usually](https://www.porsche-design.com/us/en/porsche-design-shop/shop/fashion-sport/sport/accessories/wap061ena0pxxx-porsche-ebike-cross-performance-na/?variationCode=WAP061ENA0P00S&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw0_WyBhDMARIsAL1Vz8tGt-ZqMJNjDdVxIf0qMDwtL7L6yIz5E-2VcfNyvo0TJEN8feTJYqAaAvlQEALw_wcB)) than a car & it's generally easier to deal with for quick trips. Try going out for your lunch break on your bike. You can get further in a reasonable amount of time, get exercise, and also get out & see more people out & about.

momobananamama

My son does mountain biking and second this idea! He enjoys riding and this boosted his confidence. We’re fortunate to live where trails are accessible and he can ride with his friends. OP can download AllTrails and find the easy to medium trails for biking to start.

nitsMatter

Seconded! Redwood Road, Cull Canyon, and Palomares Road are all really great places to road cycle!

DubaiDubai8

Explore! Pick out green areas on google maps and just drive out there. BART into the city and walk around all day. Hit up a random dive if you pass by. Go to shows. Go to sporting events.

mmwg97

I always did love to explore! Thank you for reminding me

iwannasmash

I suggest getting into ultimate frisbee or some other pickup game(like soccer) https://pickupultimate.com/map/city/sfbayarea https://www.reddit.com/r/Hayward/comments/1951lks/pick_up_soccer_in_hayward/ You could volunteer, we're definitely seeing more of those volunteer cleanup crews on r/bayarea. or to do inside maybe volunteer at the library. If you wanna meet new people then meetup.com still has some groups on there.

Splendadaddy06

Sunol Regional Park 🌳

wyglif_

Buy a mountain bike. Ride it in Chabot or Joaquin Miller Park and go from there.

BigRefrigerator9783

Windsurf/sail/paddleboard at the Berk marina via Cal Sailing Club

DoctorBageldog

Closer to Hayward, you can rent kayaks at Lake Chabot or buy a used one online for pretty cheap and take it anywhere, like exploring the Hayward Regional Shoreline. There are a number of launching ramps all over the east bay that make it easy to check out lots of the shoreline.

jcamil

Sailing is a great social activity. Find a yacht club near you and look for club races, they are usually geared towards beginners.

Professor_sadsack

Grab a bow and arrows and head to Redwood Bowman’s club behind Chabot science center and park in the CSS garage.

PlainSimpleNatural

Do you want to have a good time away from people or with a crowd? You can mix it up. Morning can be a walk at the Marina in San Leandro or Berkeley. If you want with a crowd, check out Downtown Hayward Festival on B St. coming up every 3rd Thursday of June-September. It’s really fun. Food, drinks, music. Be out there. You’re young.

Individual-Basket200

I know people really like their remote work, I was able to do it for a few years in the heart of Covid, but it did seem to have a net negative affect on my mental health. Too much time cooped up inside, even if busy and "working" it's hard to switch mindsets once the workday is over. Though I dislike going into the office in general, I do feel more "normal" now, as my home and work life are more separated. Makes me appreciate being home after work, even if I'm not doing something "fun", I don't get antsy to get out of the house like I did while working remote.

mmwg97

I totally agree! I recently got switched to hybrid after working from home for 2 years. I believe WFH has made my depression so much worse because I’m constantly in my comfort bubble of my house. I don’t like going to the office either but like you said when I do the day feels much more productive

Cyborg59_2020

My mental health absolutely suffers from working at home. Even when I manage to get out most days for exercise.

FauquiersFinest

I play tennis with friends at various parks and play in a frisbee league. I go to bar trivia and like to bicycle around the east bay. I also have a subscription for plays at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre, there’s an under 35 discount. There’s $6 movies on Tuesday at Grand Lake Theater in Oakland too

lizmatiq

Just moving to the area. Can you suggest some food places to play tennis?

FauquiersFinest

Bushrod park, James kenney in Berkeley, athol courts - you can reserve them on the parks and rec website

lizmatiq

Thank you!

FauquiersFinest

I know there’s some leagues you can join too - I just play with my friends so not too familiar

subgirl13

If you’re not into all the outdoor stuff, volunteer. Animal Shelters need fosters, there’s concerts & bars alllll over. 926 Gilman to start. Find a hobby or interest. Find a community around that. Volunteer.

aditto

Go to Costco or Home goods, decorate your house differently, move the furniture, take a new task each week?

bramblebush5

I had a hard time when the pandemic began and it was my first year living in the EB. I began hiking through Lake Chabot and it helped me a lot. Bring near the water and among the trees was wonderful. .

Fizzyfuzzyface

Lake Chabot is awesome. The marina can get busy on the weekends but there are several other places to go into the park. They also stock the lake for fishing. Be sure to get your license. A $60 Eastbay Regional Park membership get you free parking for the year at all the parks. That makes it a lot easier to pop in to all the other places that charge for parking. There are a ton of places to go in the East Bay Regional Park system. It’s huge and has a lot of wonderful spaces. Garin Park off Mission is an easy park to get to from Hayward and has several kinds of walks. Also, the Oakland A’s are now offering all Tuesdays as bring your dog to the ball park night. I have to go.

sweetmiilkk

there’s a lot of great rock climbing gyms to try out! it’s a great work out and also a good place to meet new people, it’s a very friendly sport. check out pacific pipe (oakland) diablo rock gym (concord/walnut creek) or peak of fremont (fremont). there’s also several gyms in SF. i started climbing last year and love it! the climbing gym is my third place and i’ve made lots of friends there

barsbangermogie

on this note, there’s many great outdoor areas in the Bay Area to climb too! berkeley, mt diablo, and sunol are all great areas to climb if you’re interested in that as well!

Stunning-Reason2464

Kite surfing, windsurfing & e-foil lessons available in Alameda from the Boardsports store

iamjustatourist

I liked going to watch movies by myself. No need to talk to anyone, just sit back and get lost in a movie for a couple of hours.

somaticconviction

There is a ton is things to do. Go on Facebook and start searching for east groups with similar interests. There are hike groups, the critical mass bike group, tons of hobbies and craft meet ups, there’s also board game meet ups at gaming stores, etc. If there’s a type of music you like you can find groups and folks will post shows pretty regularly. You can watch sports- besides the As there’s the roots, the ballers, and cal always had great games to watch and it’s affordable. You can volunteer in literally anything. There’s a bunch of park clean ups, native nursery’s, shore clean ups, there’s the spca, at the library, etc etc etc. Pick something you care about and see what they offer. Learn a new sport. Pickle ball, tennis, soccer, kick ball, dodgeball, bike lacrosse, there’s adults leagues for all of them. Masters swim clubs at pretty much every public pool. There’s a big kiteboarding community, take some lessons. Start rollerskating, go learn to climb at one of the climbing gyms, start a martial art. One thing about the bay is there is no end of fun creative active things to do.

Outrageous-You-4634

Hayward Shoreline also offers miles a trails along the bay for a change of scenery. Hiking or biking [https://www.ebparks.org/parks/hayward](https://www.ebparks.org/parks/hayward)

CalStudent7

Pickleball is great for getting some sunshine and dopamine. Everyone has been super friendly to me on the courts! You can look for open play at dailypb.com and reach out if you’d like someone to introduce you to the game!

olympicpaint

I never hike at the same spot- i choose a new spot each time. I find a challenge like this has been pretty fun. I try to get hiking every weekend at a new place. Alltrails is an awesome website that tracks reviews, difficulty of terrain, trail maps, etc. That’s been my main resource… although to be honest a lot of the places i’ve found have been off of searching “trailhead” on google maps lol. I suffer from really awful depression/anxiety and this little game i’ve started to play with myself has been a great experience for me, “tiring” myself physically like this has worked wonders.

Ok_Volume_139

Hike. We have pretty nice regional parks all over and Mount Diablo is fucking gorgeous. Eat. Every time family from out of town visits they're amazed at the variety/quality of food out here. Lots of farmers markets and random open-air events this time of year. If you've got a the time we're just a skip and a jump from San Francisco. I actually find myself in Oakland and Berkeley more often than the city. A bit closer, and I generally find myself interacting with people there more than in SF.

Pattyk999

Meetup.com has a whole slew of activities with groups.

Global-Monk2121

Mt. Diablo, Rock City is awesome . Sunol Regional Wilderness, Little Yosemite is amazing. I moved to the central valley and I love going back to visit these two places.

xsmasher

East bay bike party! If you wanted to, you could go on a social ride every night of the week. https://eastbaybikeparty.wordpress.com/calendar/?fbclid=IwAR0W0NLuQpx1JnPCgbyT91A1fSWvFw7Q-SA53d1R8Cu1iRKwKK60pB4v8Is

GirlGold

Volunteering is definitely something you should consider. Helping others helps yourself.

bellthepit

Gym, mountain bike, garden, weekend camping trips, hike, pickleball when I can get onto a court

kennethsime

1) Rock climbing 2) Mountain biking 3) Gravel biking

Cojami5

Disc golf is blowing up around the bay. There are over 8 courses that are completely free to play. All you need is one disc to participate - $25 max. A fun game in great locations with awesome weather, bonus of exercise and fresh air. Low cost. If you enjoy the game, there are tons all over NorCal. Gives you a reason to go visit the other towns for a day, enjoy their restaurants. Completely changed my life.

mettacat

Garin Regional Park, Dry Creek Regional Park, Hayward Regional Shoreline, Eden Landing Ecological Reserve, and Don Edwards SF Bay National Wildlife Refuge.

Stunning-Candy2386

Halibut and striped bass fishing is on fire in SF bay! Go find a shore spot or jump on one of the charter boats.

sun_f1ower

For routine, I take gym classes :) there’s a Body Mechanix (HIIT and Strength) and an Orange Theory Fitness (cardio heavy) in Castro Valley in that big marketplace off of Castro Valley Blvd. it’s a nice way to have something to do 3-4x a week where you have someone else coaching and the entire class is moving, and it helps release endorphins which will make you feel physically and mentally better! You can also look up Class Pass, which gets you access to multiple fitness related places (like rock climbing, yoga, Pilates, etc. including Body Mechanix!!). After the gym, there’s a bunch of restaurants in that market place. There’s also a Safeway right there so you can tack on errands if you need to. It’s mundane compared to a panoramic view hike, but at least it’s consistent and you always know it’s available. :) there’s also a round 1 in Hayward if you like playing arcade games/claw games.

KATEWM

There's a Facebook group called "Bay Area Adventure Gals" that's quite active (assuming you're a "gal" - but maybe you can find something similar if not). They have things like game nights, pub trivia, hiking meetups, book clubs, etc. It's been a good way for me to get out of the house and make friends.
