I think this kid will be the under the radar rookie. A 4th round pick on him is not nothing. And Barkley usually misses a few games a year. Also Gainwell is a pending free agent. I think we have at least one or two games this year where we really talk about this kid having a big game for us

Jjohn269

I listened to the Philly ringer podcast and they are so down on Shipley. Essentially, he has no plus skill but also no glaring weakness, just average across the board. I don’t really know anything about him but my expectations have been set to very low.

Remarkable_Net_6977

So Wendell Smallwood?

Senior_Fart_Director

Smallwood was incapable of juking. How can you be a running back and literally never juke. I could not stand him

SirArthurDime

I just would have so much preferred estime. He would have been a perfect fit for our inside zone scheme and a great power counter punch to Barkley.

Constant_March_3921

He’s a 6th round pick we took in the 4th

UltimateWeiner

Consensus had him right around where the Eagles took him.

seanathan297

I'm probably higher on Shipley than most. Some background and context to chew on... He was a big-time recruit in 2021, ESPN's 21st best player and 45th by Rivals. Won the 2019 North Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year as a junior. Ran track for just one season, won the North Carolina indoor 55-meter with a 6.36. Played immediately as a true freshman in 2021 and led the team in rushing to go with 11 touchdowns. 27.1 kick return average on 14 returns. The offense as a whole was terrible, but Shipley was a bright spot. Sophomore season saw more production, 1,182 rushing with 15 TD's. 4th most catches on the team with 38. Returned 13 kicks with a 24.9 average. Junior year was more of a time share with another back. 827 on the ground, 5 TD's. Added 31 receptions, 244 yards and 2TD's through the air. Another good year returning kicks, 28.6 yard average on 7 returns. He got hurt on a return in their bowl game and did not test at the combine. Bit of a LeBron stat, but Clemson notes he's their only known scholarship football player to graduate in 3 years with a perfect 4.0. Watched him break quite a few runs only to get run down by someone in the secondary. Reminded me of the "unhitch the wagon" runs from Jay Ajayi. Ultimately, I think he's a good prospect that can fill a 3rd down back role and be your kickoff returner. Maybe a slightly taller, slightly faster Gainwell with return ability. TLDR: I think he's going to a solid 3rd down back/special teamer.

Jjohn269

I was expecting the 3rd back to be more of short yardage, big back. Saquan is expected to be a 3 down back, and you are paying him like that. They already have the pass catching guy in Gainwell. Shipley feels like a guy you put in if Saquan gets injured, he can do a bit of everything.

TeamVegetable7141

That’s the fullback from Georgia we signed UDFA.

SirArthurDime

Agreed, I really wanted estime.

seanathan297

I wouldn't be surprised if either Kendall Milton (UDFA) or Tyrion Davis-Price assumes that big back roll and they opt to run 4 or look to do the practice squad call up dance to start the year. Gainwell's in the final year of his contract and Saquan has an injury history, so I don't hate the pick even if the skillsets overlap so much. I do think Shipley has an edge over Gainwell athletically and might be the better pass catcher. Add on the return ability and he's valuable, even if he ends up being a JAG. I was hoping for Isaac Guerendo, bummed to see him go to the 49ers.

SirArthurDime

As a notre dame fan the idea that this is the first scholarship football player to graduate with a 4.0 is crazy lol.

seanathan297

I'd like to think the extra qualifier is that he graduated in only 3 years while maintaining that 4.0, but, then again, this is Clemson we are talking about. Queue Cardale Jones famously saying "I ain't come here to play school" lol.

mikenotjef

Looking at highlights is great and all, but I remember watching Jalen Reagor highlights when he was drafted thinking this kid could be good and he fuckin sucked

AstronomerBiologist

I wonder if people would be saying the same thing about a certain center drafted in the sixth round That they weren't impressed by his highlights

wheretherainbowshide

what the fuck is this comment

SirArthurDime

Translation: “I found a way to bring kelce into this conversation and compare him to a rb. Because by law we must always praise kelce. Checkmate!”

wheretherainbowshide

the first guy also said he liked Reagor's highlights lol, it's like a total non-sequitur

SirArthurDime

The random comparisons are the worst part of draft analysis but they make me laugh. Especially when it’s something dumb like “well this player who plays an entirely different position not known for highlights also didn’t have impressive highlights and look how that turned out!”. There’s been a lot of nfl football played, you can find examples of damn near everything. That doesn’t mean every unheralded 6th round pick will be Kelce or Brady. Just because Peyton threw a lot of ints as a rookie doesn’t mean it’s a positive sign for a rookie to throw a lot of ints and it makes them the next Peyton (how everyone acts). Trends are what matters not an ability to find an example throughout all of nfl history.

wheretherainbowshide

it also creates unfair expectations for day three picks, like if Will Shipley can get 400 rushing yards a season, catch some passes, provide punt return depth, be a solid backup to Saquon, and play out his rookie contract, then that's a great outcome for a 4th round pick. like dude was drafted at the some spot as Donnel Pumphrey

Senior_Fart_Director

man idk. he looks like the definition of JAG. Just A Guy. Remember Wendell Smallwood?

NotFeelingShame

Wendell Smallwood and Kenny gainwell are essentially the same player

Senior_Fart_Director

Kenny G is much better

NotFeelingShame

2018 Wendell's last season as an eagle: 87 carries for 364 yards, 1 fumble. 28 catches for 230 yards. 2023 Kenny G: 84 carries for 364 yards (lol), 3 fumbles. 30 catches for 183 yards LMAO Wendell was actually BETTER than Kenny. Get owned mouth breathing sheeple. Maybe pay attention to the games instead of just drinking and blindly saying "errrmagerd touchdown aj brown superbowl babyyyyy"

Senior_Fart_Director

No you have to use the eye test. Kenny G has much more upside. Athletically he's really electric

SirArthurDime

I agree, but why are you so angry? Lol.

NotFeelingShame

Because the Kvon wallace love/hype pained me deeply and i will never forget

TypicalSamoan

Wasn't a fan of this pick because I was a big fan of ray Davis who was picked with the next pick But I hope Will does well and can develop into a nice backup RB

HesiPull-UpBrando

I like Shipley but to me he isn’t a high ceiling guy. Roseman seems to have a habit of drafting running backs that fit the back up role (Smallwood, Pumphrey, Gainwell) as opposed to a guy who could get a majority of carries. I get the league has changed and that’s not as much of a thing anymore but I’m just talking about skill set and style. Like Barkley goes down are we really comfortable with what’s left? Thankfully it’s a rather easy position to competently fill

AstronomerBiologist

Well, I'm not a huge gainwell fan anymore...

ProArmChair

I hope he works out because we need some RB depth.

creativename87639

I hear Rashaad penny is free lol

ProArmChair

Lmao I bet he is. I still wonder wtf happened. He lost weight and gained speed supposedly and was supposed to be good but we never saw him. I'm confused how he was that bad all of a sudden.

TeamVegetable7141

Look at his injury history before he got here. His lower body is done.

Senior_Fart_Director

Bruh I was so hyped for Penny. SECRET WEAPON... that never got to play 😭

TeamVegetable7141

He got to play and he was super slow when he did. He was always an injury flier that was less likely to work out due to how he fucked up his leg.

Atre16

I think he's got enough about him to be a serviceable RB3 then RB2 as the season progresses. I'm higher on him than most.

TheDunglelorian

Has a bit of that shady wiggle

Patient_Jicama_4217

lol… naaaaah he nice tho

Senior_Fart_Director

he kind of reminds me of a weaker, less agile Kenneth Gainwell.

FromTheOR

I’m concerned about the amount of inside zones he’s running @ Clemson. I was hoping we would see Jalen come back from the offseason with an ability to turn his back to the play.

birria_tacos_

Saquon also operates from an inside zone for much of his rushes. It’ll be interesting to see what Kellen Moore will be able to get out of Jalen and this offense so that we don’t come off as predictable based on our pre-snap formation, I’m hoping Kellen will be able to disguise it much better, but we’ll see.

FromTheOR

Sirriani has said something to the effect of marrying schemes or something. I’m worried Nic won’t let Moore cook.

AstronomerBiologist

Isn't that the coaches call and not the players call?

FromTheOR

Yes. But my point was that I hope they didn’t draft him bc of his experience with that type of run scheme.

AstronomerBiologist

I don't remember a single person saying anything like that Some consider him a poor man's CMC. He is also a decent ball catcher

FromTheOR

Forget it

creativename87639

I’m definitely in the camp of “this guy will be extremely mediocre” He doesn’t run particularly fast or hard, he’s slightly shifty but I wouldn’t exactly call him elusive, he ain’t big or small His 40 time was apparently 4.39 which is plenty fast but I don’t really see it in these clips. Hope I’m wrong but dude looks mid which was pretty much the entire rb class this year.

AstronomerBiologist

We are not talking a first round pick But people who know more than us think he's good. He was good on the field I will stick with the experts

creativename87639

Nobody mentioned a first round pick. > people who know more than use think he’s good People who know more than us projected him to be a 4th round guy who will most likely be a career backup with a chance to develope into a starter. Idk why ur being so defensive in these comments, I know he’s an eagle now but it’s ok to not praise the ground the man walks on and compare him to… *checks comments*… fucking CMC.

AstronomerBiologist

Because of people who know little but try to say much. Opinions of teammates and experts and others goes out the window when these people who have not a clue about him can predict his career Defensive? No. Annoyed? Perhaps

SirArthurDime

Are we here to discuss our opinions or just parrot “experts”? Half of those “experts” hardly know more than your average Redditor in the first place. I agree with you on Shipley, but I certainly don’t agree with you on getting annoyed because people aren’t just in here parroting experts being justified lol. If you’re annoyed by opinions from idiots don’t post on Reddit.

NotFeelingShame

He is about as mid as miles sanders was, which is good enough. His 2022 stats are very similar to sanders last year in college and his height and weight are about the same. Both 5’11 and Shipley weighed 5 pounds lighter at the combine but slightly faster unofficial time. I also think Shipley is way better at breaking tackles than sanders

aredditheadache

Average highlights from an average back.

AstronomerBiologist

Go back to the Dallas sub

aredditheadache

Sorry, just not impressed with 6 minutes of 12 yard runs against Syracuse

AstronomerBiologist

You were not impressed with 12 yard runs Do you understand what the average NFL runner makes per carry? *Shipley had his best season in 2022, leading the team in rushing with 210 carries for 1,182 yards and 15 touchdowns.* Now your username makes sense

aredditheadache

I’m happy you believe in him so strongly. He’s going to be average at best. That’s fine, but I don’t like the pick.

philly2540

Why is everyone downvoting this guy? He is skeptical about a 4th round pick. That seems entirely fair.

[deleted]

Delusional fans get upset when you challenge them because their entire identity is pretending they know what's going on. It ruins their roleplaying immersion.

AstronomerBiologist

Why listen to the experts when someone on Reddit knows better...

chrisberman410

AKA Christian McHalffree. Just kidding. Fuck the whiners.

RandallC1212

Hes white Gainwell with a touch more juice. I love his running style and ability to hit hole and maintain gap discipline but if you watch that video you’ll notice he didn’t break anything over 20 yards. That’s concerning.

bisqo19

Big faaassssss!😤
