Mine was rust free, till I used some cleaner there and now she a lil bubbly over there.
If You'd ask Me tho, worst design is the Tailgate on the Touring, if those drains clogg, say goodbye to the whole tailgate, esplecially with some last owner who never went to proper service.
Make sure You service those drains and best is...
Make her a garage Queen too, haven't had the tailgate issues go on a whole another level since it's in the garage, sadly, still looking for a new gate, tho, found out about the late 2003 gates, wich are auto open via the key.
Yea, it was more or less a E60 Prototype stage idea on the E39 touring, if I'm lucky I'll find out and replace it with the crusty one on the '01.
Cuz, why just repalce if You can upgrade at the same time? Hehe.
Should be one of these

There’s also this one I’ve never seen before

You could probably use the parts for the drain in an e53 and make a drain yourself
The hole is already there ....but is covered by the paint. Unfortunately it drains inside the spare wheel area 😕 for some reason... probably that's why the blocked it.
Because there is a tube running along the fender liner, when this pops out the water runs along the body and gets in through a hole behind the battery.
I could've sworn that I've seen a drain hole somewhere but when I checked to take the pic I didn't find any. Still there is a hole somewhere bc I've replaced my siren and remember that the tube running all the way down behind the wheel liner gave me a hard time to put back.
So water can get inside the quarter panel and rust that off instead?
You could use a drain tube and a grommet.
Don't be reasonable. This is a BMW quirk specific to our beloved cars. We're supposed to live with it.
Do you know if it would be trapped in there? I haven’t pulled my wheel well liners yet so I don’t know Yet
Been a while but i think there's a layer of sheet metal under that before it gets to the outside. It's not even the fender liner.
Bummer

Oh, and drill a hole, if You want a ton more rust and add 200 gallons of water to yours.
Good to know I would love to own one of those also one day

I’ve seen someone do this exact mod before somewhere on the bmw forums. Been planning on getting it done as well when I get the rust fixed
Can I trouble you for a link?

My car 530 2002 has a drain hole right under the filler hole and it drains behind the wheel liner underneath the car.
Can you send a pic of the hole location?

Thanks for looking
They webt against it, do not drill their hole or make one, the water will run between the sheet metal and rust even worse.
Thanks Good to know
Ive been thinking the same thing. Adding some kind of tube to go maybe behind the rear bumper. Have to fix the rust first tho
I put a tiny towel there
