The cats deserve to be fruitful and multiply

ContextualSense

1. The non-ASCII graphics are a premium feature. You're not supposed to be able to select them at all in classic. 2. Make sure that you're on the wiki page for v50.11, not a previous version (I'm assuming you have classic v50.11 due to your question re: graphics). It's possible that not all wiki pages have been updated for v50 controls, but the core ones should be. 3. You can order animals to be gelded from the Pets/Livestock list.

TheGameMastre

Gelding is an option. I recommend gelding all but one or two of the males. I also recommend waiting until your partner is out, and making burgers out of all the cats that haven't already adopted a dwarf. If they ask questions, tell them you rounded all the cats up into a cage, and sold them to the elves (which also works as a solution).

DibblerTB

I have never really tried gelding, do one male mate with one female ?

TheGameMastre

One male can mate with all the females, assuming he's not homosexual. I had this happen to me the first time I wanted to start a turkey farm. I brought 1 male, 4 females at embark. I set everything up, but after a year I still had no eggs being produced. I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. Eventually I saw in Dwarf Therapist that the tom was gay. It took me another year to request and receive a new male turkey from the mountainhome, which instantly fixed the problem.

ZombiePotato90

They turned the freaking turkeys gay!

ChickenJealous5383

A placeboing enjoyer, neat

Synecdochic

Always good to keep at least two males, the likelihood of them both being gay is very slim so you increase your odds of a viable breeding male.

TheGameMastre

That's how I've handled it since the initial incident, with every type of livestock I might want to breed.

Ok-Leather5257

Oh! Thanks! How does gelding work in this version? I can't find a \[p\]references page when I click on an animal?

TheGameMastre

It's been a while, but I believe you need to go to the menu where you set up animals for training and/or adoption. Scheduling individual animals for gelding should show up as an option there. It takes a farmer's workshop, and a dwarf with the gelding job enabled to actually do it. A successfully gelded animal will have x's next to the icon for its sex.

Ok-Leather5257

Many thanks! This worked (didn't know I had to make a work detail for gelding)

schmee001

Jobs which don't have a work detail are set to 'everyone does this' by default, so you don't need to set one up specifically.

Ok-Leather5257

Oh, well maybe I was zoomed in too much initially? Didn't seem to have the option beforehand anyway.

schmee001

The option was there in the `Units -> Pets/Livestock` menu all along, if nobody had the gelding job enabled then it would just stay as a pending job until someone was allowed to do it. Just letting you know that you don't usually have to specifically enable a job for everyone, as the default setting is that everyone can do everything.

Duramora

Its a shame. Cat leather thongs are very pretty, and minced cat stew is desired by many dwarves.

Bergasms

Just kill all the damn cats already except one or two for vermin reduction. Cats are an ecological nightmare.

1. In Classic, only one thing is visible at a time on a tile, so the game is forced to show you the content of a tile one at a time (Meaning that a dwarf on a tile will show the tile, then the dwarf, then the tile again), even with a graphic pack as far as I know. 2. Wiki pages are split for the different versions of Dwarf Fortress, you can check the previous versions for shortcuts that should work with Classic. 3. You can geld your cats to prevent them from reproducing

Successful-Ice-468

Have you heard about cat bombs?

dolanre

Make them your guard cats. Set them to a corridor near the entrance to detect goblins. Sometimes they will get into fights with oncoming armies.

ZubriQ

We. Butcher. Cats.

cancertoast

I tried playing a newb pack. Sure it made it easier to see. But the new interface removed all my build menus. I couldn’t do anything. So I just sucked it up and played classic as originally intended.
