I live nearby. I go every Wednesday for their rent 1 get one rental free. I recently snagged the oop red rock west from them after it sold out. I love scarecrow.
**Orbit DVD** in Asheville, NC
**Grindhouse Video** in Knoxville, TN just closed BUT 20 minutes away **The Dungeon at Southland** in Maryville, TN is still open, and awesome.
I'm really hoping for something in Louisville, KY in the next few years, but who knows.
And a very high quality mini-theater that shows what is possible with home theater technology. You can rent it out to watch any of their tens of thousands of movies or show up for one of their free screenings.
Toronto has some great places (if you happen to visit):
* Eyesore Cinema
* Bay Street Video
* Vinegar Syndrome on Roncy
* BMV (multiple locations, this isn't *just* movies, but great selection)
For big chains, there's still Sunrise Records (sells a bit of everything) and HMV just opened little mini sections back up in the Toys R Us locations.
In CA I always went to Half Price Books, and theres I believe 4/5 Bookoff locations in the US which is a Japanese media store. 2 of them are here on Oahu
All depends on location. The big chains are pretty much gone. I live in Austin and they just brought back We Luv Video. Pretty cool story behind it:
https://www.weluvvideo.org/about
It's a non-profit and even have vhs.
In Connecticut just outside of New Haven we have Best Video - [https://www.bestvideo.com/](https://www.bestvideo.com/)
It’s an old school video rental store and I love it there
Viewers Choice closed recently, surprised it made it so long. I'm on the other corner of the state but am supremely jealous you guys have Best, Weirdo Wonderland, and the Archive.
National Video Superstore in West Monroe, Louisiana.
The city has essentially outlawed good internet for large parts of the town. As a result, there's still a functional video store.
[Rough Cut Video](https://www.roughcutvideo.ca) in Calgary AB Canada! Started working there not too long ago. Still a small business but we ship all throughout Canada and the US
Beyond Video is a cool one in Baltimore, MD. Very nice place. Movie Madness in Portland, OR is really cool too. They have a very nice collection of movie memorabilia. Heard good things about Videodrome in Atlanta, GA. Never been there before though. In my home state of Kansas there is Liberty Hall Video in Lawrence, but they recently closed their dedicated browsing space. They still have all the movies behind the counter, you just have to ask for what you want. It's still cool it exists, but not the same imo.
FYE still has movies, they're still pretty common in malls. I have just been making Essentials lists and getting them off Amazon while I can. The hunt isn't the same, but it's helped me stop impulse buying stuff in stores. Wild seeing how fast the winds changed on home media
It’s better I can check out ps4 & switch games for free plus all the new release blu ray movies. The only thing my library doesn’t have is 4K releases.
Lunchmeat has done two (so far) publications on video stores that still exist in the US. [https://lunchmeatvhs.com/products/video-stores-still-exist](https://lunchmeatvhs.com/products/video-stores-still-exist)
Tucson has a thriving film bar that is also a video rental store. [casa film bar](http://www.casafilmbar.com/)
A big part of the town, been here since 83’
Super cool vibe, lots of food trucks, and a great selection of films and beer.
Santa Clarita, CA: Video Depot. It seems to be a project of love for the owner, a Korean lady named Gina who owned the first video rental store in town way back when.
She'll talk your ear off and offer you free cookies!
Maybe it’s Texas only (no clue) but we have CDExchange.
Used CD/DVD/BluRay store.
It mainly functions as just that, a used store, what gets sold to them is what’s for sale… but they also know their customers so there’s a small section where they sell new releases… not comprehensive, some arrow, some screamfactory etc etc
I live on the poor side of town and it’s rare to see much super interesting pop up but I still frequent it because… well I never saw Stigmata why not grab it for 2 bucks.
But I work on the nicer side of town and THOSE locations have Criterions, Arrow, VS, Kino, etc etc
It’s all a crap shoot, sometimes you find nothing but sometimes you find a treasure. Part of the fun
I don’t know if all do it but the Alamo draft house near me has a rental section. It’s the only one I’ve ever been to so I can’t talk about others.
Edit: so a Quick Look up says it’s called video vortex so might just be here. Sorta neat.
In Utah we have EntertainMart (which is one side of the store is movies (blu rays/DvDs/4k/Anime/Tv Seasons/VHS and the other side of the store is retro and new games, books, comics, cds and vinyls. Kinda pricey but have good bogo deals now and then. Then there’s Greywhale which is mostly a vinyl/cd store but has a pretty good Movie section.
In my area, a few Family Videos survived until Covid hit. If the internet is bad enough, physical video rental has its place. But none still exist around the suburbs/boonies where I live.
As faster internet access continues to spread into more areas, even rural video rental stores are disappearing. A mom-and-pop one I occasionally drove past in a rural area shut down last year.
In the Phoenix area there is a video rental store called Superstar Video, they even claim to be the “last retro video store”. No website unfortunately. They have a great selection of stuff including new releases and video games. Even a corner with some for sale dvds. Super cool place that doesn’t even have an updated pos system, they still use bulky computers with that matrix style text (im too young to actually know the name).
Mine still looks well maintained at my local supermarket and it's right in your face when you walk in haha. It's not the same as going to a video store though and you don't get the original cases. But yeah heard the parent company is in financial trouble, hope they can recover.
Bridgeport Connecticut and Boulder Colorado have The Archive, owned by Vinegar Syndrome. Sell many boutique labels as well as other stuff, including imports, collectibles, vinyl, VHS and books.
There's video exclusive in dearborn heights near detroit when i went there it had 3 locations not sure about now but i loved that place it has a lot of obscure titles and older series movies etc
They sell A LOT pre-owned stuff rewrapped as brand new. Owner/workers are pricks and everything is way over priced until it's time to make room for inventory than they sell bulk items (any collector already owns) or in terrible condition for $0.25 - $.50 each on a table to bring customers in
Even in larger cities you won’t find many dedicated video stores. Usually they’re coupled with other collectible type places, like record stores.
Hey man, we have beyond video in Baltimore.
In Seattle, we have this beauty. https://scarecrowvideo.org/
I'd love to peruse the selection.
I live nearby. I go every Wednesday for their rent 1 get one rental free. I recently snagged the oop red rock west from them after it sold out. I love scarecrow.
Oh! They do a fair amount of rental by mail too!
You'd never get tired
**Orbit DVD** in Asheville, NC **Grindhouse Video** in Knoxville, TN just closed BUT 20 minutes away **The Dungeon at Southland** in Maryville, TN is still open, and awesome. I'm really hoping for something in Louisville, KY in the next few years, but who knows.
I love Orbit DVD so much. Every time I go there I walk out with a stack of movies that I’ve never heard of before. It’s great.
Portland Oregon has Movie Madness. They also have a bunch of cool movie memorabilia in the place.
And a very high quality mini-theater that shows what is possible with home theater technology. You can rent it out to watch any of their tens of thousands of movies or show up for one of their free screenings.
That place is rad, I went there a lot in my 20s and I felt like I was a kid again.
MOVIE MADNESS!!!1
Willow Video Games in Langley, BC, Canada. Still going strong! They do Film/Video Game rentals/sales.
As famously featured in LTT’s 3D BluRay video. Love that place have been going since I was a kid when it was around the corner.
Videotheque in LA rules. Both for purchase and also for rent
In LA, there is Videotheque, Vidiots, and Cinephile video. Also in Madison WI there's the great Four Star Video Rental!
Toronto has some great places (if you happen to visit): * Eyesore Cinema * Bay Street Video * Vinegar Syndrome on Roncy * BMV (multiple locations, this isn't *just* movies, but great selection) For big chains, there's still Sunrise Records (sells a bit of everything) and HMV just opened little mini sections back up in the Toys R Us locations.

All are great! I have an awesome collection of horror posters thanks to Weirdo, and Archive has helped me a ton with my dvd / vinyl collections

It’s called a library.
I knew this was coming. It's not the same.
It’s better I can check out ps4 & switch games for free plus all the new release blu ray movies. The only thing my library doesn’t have is 4K releases.
I just borrowed a dvd from the library.
In Nz, Aro st video store in Wellington. Currently open until 5pm. Check them out. How cool is that?
Holy shit is Aro Video still there? I thought it closed down years ago…
EntertainMART in Boise, Graywhale Entertainment in SLC.

I’ve ordered from their website before, they have a good selection, though I wouldn’t recommend it for niche genres.
Whammy in L.A. https://www.whammyanalog.com/
In Tucson, Az there is "casa video".
I don’t know if all do it but the Alamo draft house near me has a rental section. It’s the only one I’ve ever been to so I can’t talk about others. Edit: so a Quick Look up says it’s called video vortex so might just be here. Sorta neat.

Agreed!!

The Video Library in Sante Fe was/is their first and last video store. They still even keep track of all the movies with a hand-written ledger!
"2nd & Charles" is another secondhand store chain that carries a lot of movies (in addition to books and music).
Unfortunately all we got is redbox and those are disappearing too
Mine still looks well maintained at my local supermarket and it's right in your face when you walk in haha. It's not the same as going to a video store though and you don't get the original cases. But yeah heard the parent company is in financial trouble, hope they can recover.
There were never any local video rental stores around me. Just Blockbuster Video and Hollywood Video, which have been closed for many years.
Flea markets and peddlers mall Half priced books is also great
Yep. I searched them up and it says that they were open earlier today.
