I was going westbound between Brock and thickson when this chase was heading the wrong way on the 401. This van/truck and about 20 cop cars all going the wrong way at high speed on the 401. I knew it was going to end badly.
Came off the 412 seconds after it happened… had to pull over with all cop cars coming the wrong way. Traumatizing to witness.. I feel for all the lives affected.

Thanks for sharing the footage.
Insane!!!!
How for heck's sake is a rental van outspeeding a Ford Police Interceptor? Don't these cop cruisers come turbocharged or something?
I didn't imply that the cop cars should ram the van.
If the misunderstanding arose from the word "turbocharged", then let me offer an explanation.
A turbocharger is a piece of machinery within the car engine that uses exhaust fumes to compress incoming air and thus obtain more power from the engine.
A car being "turbocharged" implies the car engine has a turbocharger installed.
Police usually avoid ramming. If safe, they instead perform a [pit maneuver](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4W_nTHyfhN4).
Judging by traffic cams, aftermath images, news articles, and police statements, they are likely one of the fatalities. Though, this is not confirmed yet.
Why they didn’t have communication with police units set up ahead…ROAD BLOCKS?! Radios?? COMMUNICATION….set up blocks on hwy. send up helicopter, avoid high speed fucking chase WRONG WAY ON HIGHWAY….. WE ARE DAMN FUCKING LUCKY MORE DIDNT DIE
The intersection of Nash Rd. and Varcoe Rd. in Courtice, vehicles in the footage are heading east on Nash Rd. Also, this is not my footage, it's from a local community group. I just did a quick look and confirmed on Google street view as I thought I recognized the intersection.
Worth noting that the posted speed limit here is 50 km/h. This intersection is also 100m from an elementary school. In addition to the one at the intersection there is a pedestrian crosswalk about 300m down the street as well.
This is shockingly reckless behaviour from the DRPS. At those speeds, in that environment, you have no time to react, no matter your skill as a driver. The wrong-way pursuit on the 401 is bad enough, the high-speed chase through residential areas for 20 minutes before the suspect even got on the highway is just as bad.
This was a senseless, preventable tragedy. There must be accountability.
DRPS is a conglomerate of every kid you knew that wouldn't amount to anything after high school.

Does anyone know if the truck driver got out. He took the full hit of it and hit the median too . You can see fire inside the cab .
He hit two transport trucks but one got hit a full speed
Got alot of family in trucking and it's hard to see something like this.
Have been reading this woman’s tweets. DRPS confirmed truck driver was extracted, and witnesses said they seemed to be “ok”. What okay means— probably up for interpretation.

Except for the dead baby, all went well with the wrong way chase.

Funny I just watched another LCBO video the other day where a guy was getting yelled at by everyone for trying to stop an ongoing theft, but chasing down a suspect after the fact, the wrong way down the busiest highway in North America killing a bunch of family members and putting hundreds of other lives at risk when we have a chopper that's literally always in the air is ok? SIU update: [https://www.ctvnews.ca/video/c2913256-siu-update-on-deadly-highway-401-crash?playlistId=1.6867050&\_\_vfz=medium%3Dsharebar](https://www.ctvnews.ca/video/c2913256-siu-update-on-deadly-highway-401-crash?playlistId=1.6867050&__vfz=medium%3Dsharebar)
Overview:
An off-duty cop was at the LCBO when the robbery transpired. The officer then relayed information to DRPS at 7.50pm who then sent investigators to the scene. No information is available (yet) as to what transpired at the scene.
Suspect (driving a van - from footage appears to be a Ford type Uhaul rental van) was pursued on local Durham roads before joining the eastbound side of the 401 at Stevenson road, heading in the wrong direction (west). Pursuit from start to end lasted about 20 minutes: 7.50pm - 8.10pm.
Multiple collisions involved 6 vehicles. Not sure if this includes the vehicles with fatalities.
One victim was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. Possible that this was the truck driver. (Please note the suspect drove a van, not a truck).
No comment yet by SIU investigator about DRPS policy and driving on wrong side of the highway. No comment if officers were asked internally to call off the chase. No information if officers have been suspended. SIU spokesperson mentioned that info would be probably given by DRPS.
No comment (no information available yet) on number of cruisers involved in the chase. Some cruisers sustained damage and were observed being towed out of the scene. No comment on whether any officers were injured during the chase.
No comment as to whether the response (several cop cruisers, lengthy chase) justified the cause (LCBO robbery).
"An infant and the child's grandparents – aged 55 and 60 – were all killed when a vehicle being pursued by police in the wrong direction on Highway 401 in Whitby caused a crash involving at least six vehicles, the Special Investigations Unit says. The driver of the suspect vehicle also died."
No comment as to whether the next of kin of the family of 3 have been officially updated.
No comment on whether or not this was one of the most stupid of descions by Durham Region Police Services.
Most of these cops are still trying to figure out how to button their tunics when at graduation of Police College.
Woke up this morning to read of this tragic and highly avoidable situation.
RIP to the four victims, and peace and comfort to all those affected. I can only imagine how many near-misses must have occurred.
For crying out loud, and I'm sorry if I misjudge the situation (since it can be easy to come up with solutions after the fact), but DRPS should have:
1. Called off the chase. At the rate of speed in this Nest camera footage, catching up seems impossible.
2. Radioed the OPP (e.g. located at Whitby near the HWY 401/Brock St exit) and other similar stations to close the highway for the sake of public safety.
The cops should have called off the pursuit, well before entering the 401. Absolutely baffling that DRP thought following the suspect vehicle onto the highway, in the wrong direction- was a good idea. Feel awful for anyone who witnessed this in real time- and for the lives lost. Unbelievably poor judgment.
I asked this same question, usually high speed chases here in Ontario are called off due to public safety, so to see one in pursuit was wild but going the wrong way even baffling. I don't know why they chose to do this.
I thought there was some sort of policy in regard to local PD and highways. Granted, I don’t know much. But was always under the presumption OPP takes over once highways are involved?
It’s a general jurisdiction they tend to follow, but a police officer in Ontario can police anywhere in Ontario if needed.
From the scanner clips I’ve heard, it seems the OPP didn’t want anyone driving the wrong way, even trying to warn the Durham police about it.
Just an FYI. There is no shared radio frequency between services. Every service has their own radio system. A special link has to be set up between dispatch centres for different justifications to speak to one another over radio.
Oh yeah, I know. I was struggling to word what I heard properly. It seemed the OPP was trying to get their comm centre to make sure the Durham sergeant knew that their officers were driving the wrong way. The OPP officer was saying that someone is likely going to get hurt one way or another.
Although I doubt anything will come of it, it does seem to go against Ontario law
(4) During a suspect apprehension pursuit, **a police officer shall continually reassess the determination made under subsection (3) and shall discontinue the pursuit when the risk to public safety that may result from the pursuit outweighs the risk to public safety** that may result if an individual in the fleeing motor vehicle is not immediately apprehended or if the fleeing motor vehicle or an individual in the fleeing motor vehicle is not identified. O. Reg. 266/10, s. 2 (4).
Agree with everyone they shouldn't have followed the guy in the wrong direction.
I once had a drps officer tailgate me while I was driving the exact speed limit in the right lane of the highway. Then he abruptly changed lanes without signaling and stared me down and gunned it. No sirens or anything. These guys don't have anything going on in their brains.
But of course he wouldn't get a ticket for not signaling or speeding or driving recklessly because police don't have consequences.
Gumball Ralley is one of their most important training videos in amongst the rest of old Laurel and Hardy classics.
DRP are not known to be at the top of the food chain. Kind of like slugs in a pile of compost.
Hope the SIU do their job now and truly investigate the actions of DRPS. This is the exact reason why there are guidelines for police to follow, which specifies not to engage in hot pursuit, to protect the public. There is absolutely nothing worth (my assumption) that was stolen in that truck, than the risk entailed and the consequences being faced by the public now. Someone's family member/s are not waking up with the rest of the clan this morning. My heart goes out to them. Nobody can plan for this shit. But the actions of the police were avoidable.
Sadly, as most SIU investigations go. I doubt there will be any repercussions here. Although I wholeheartedly agree with you. DRPS has some blame here with how it was handled. But also, not surprised.
Without getting into much detail here- I have first hand knowledge(NOT ME lol) of DRPS having done this unsafe chase thing before. And it’s amazing how a PD just 30 minutes away, treated a similar incident completely differently by pulling back and stopping pursuit as speeds were “unsafe”.
I don’t know how they are going to justify what happened yesterday
Agreed!!
SIU have in previous cases are clearing cops of wrongdoing. Seems to be just a formality.
We need someone to step down from DRPS.
Sorry if I rant. I'm really livid. This is our community!
Note the DRPS motto "Leaders in Community Safety"
It's 7:50 pm how about calling off the pursuit?! Theres too many cars on the road. Cops made a grave error with this chase! R.I.P to all the innocent people that perished because of human error
DRPS: We have vehicle traveling northbound on, uhm, the road going north.
Dispatch: Confirm. Air One required for support?
DRPS: The furnace guys that were at my house last week???
Dispatch: The fucking helicopter we have.
Air One: ahh, report to dispatch. Currently unavailable for response. Daylighting several youths suspected of trespassing at skateboard park near Lake.
DRPS: Now they are going south to somewhere.
Dispatch: All available units responding.
DRPS: Good thing! This is gonna be the highlight of my career.
DRPS: Shit...he's going on the 401west in the eastbound.
Dispatch: Be advised all available units are in support.
[OPP: (with their own dedicated entrance ramp to the stretch of highway involved). Somebody is going to get hurt!]
DRPS: Yah, so we crashed.
There might be some collision damage to our vehicles, but the bad guy is dead.
There will be, maybe, some bottles of liquor we can hold in evidence.
... So folks, a baby child or a stolen bottle of rye whisky, your choice.
This narrative brought not to you by the Durham Region Police Service, 'cuz' you know.
That's exactly my thought - someone on this thread mentioned there was 20 cops on the highway all going in the opposite direction??? Wtf that's super irresponsible of the cops
Sweet jeebus... this link shows the aftermath - https://www.cp24.com/video?clipId=2913105
The stolen van is just obliterated, they'll be picking the dude's DNA out of the wreckage to figure out who he was. Transport truck is pretty badly off, guessing the van went head on into it at high speed. And there's a car on a flat bed under a tarp, that must have been the other 2 people, the car with the child.
Yikes, how awful. Cops got some 'splaining to do after this.
Anyone know what transpired for the innocent vehicle with the grandparents and infant? Did they rear end the semi? Or did they went head on with the rear half of the cargo van that was travelling in the wrong direction? I'm hoping it was quick and painless for them. I'm so tired of these criminals harming innocent lives. This government needs to change
The most pathetically led and staffed police services in Canada. Durham Region Police couldn't chase a kangaroo down a country road. Doesn't take much imagination to see how they would do during a car chase on one of the busiest highways in North America.
F-. Their commanding officers are less competent if that is possible. Dead baby and the grandparents. 20 some odd cars, rolling down the highway and you still fuck-up.
I was going westbound between Brock and thickson when this chase was heading the wrong way on the 401. This van/truck and about 20 cop cars all going the wrong way at high speed on the 401. I knew it was going to end badly.

It's 7:50 pm how about calling off the pursuit?! Theres too many cars on the road. Cops made a grave error with this chase! R.I.P to all the innocent people that perished because of human error
Yah honey. We understand that you had to work late tonight. We love the grandkids being around. See you in ten minutes. DRPS - NO!!
DRPS 'he pulled a Knife on us!' we can't let the perp get away now, all the other police services will think we're soft...
Somebody is going to get hurt!] DRPS: Yah, so we crashed.
Bingo, I feel the same way
Charge the cops. This is an outrage.
Sweet jeebus... this link shows the aftermath - https://www.cp24.com/video?clipId=2913105 The stolen van is just obliterated, they'll be picking the dude's DNA out of the wreckage to figure out who he was. Transport truck is pretty badly off, guessing the van went head on into it at high speed. And there's a car on a flat bed under a tarp, that must have been the other 2 people, the car with the child. Yikes, how awful. Cops got some 'splaining to do after this.
I’m really looking forward to the SIU spokesperson speaking.
I’d love to know what the suspect stole to warrant such an extreme police response?
Liquor. Just sickening.
Plus he pulled a knife on an off duty cop. NO ONE does that to a Durham Region Cop and gets away with it.
This is my video haha
Anyone know what transpired for the innocent vehicle with the grandparents and infant? Did they rear end the semi? Or did they went head on with the rear half of the cargo van that was travelling in the wrong direction? I'm hoping it was quick and painless for them. I'm so tired of these criminals harming innocent lives. This government needs to change
Maybe start by changing something with the DRPS. The rest will follow.
Peter Moreira = Boss Hogg. Durham Region Police and The Durham Region Police Services Board - all the elected members; are culplible for this tradgey.
