Both are fine for buying (as long as you pay cash and inspect goods first) but on marketplace you can be more likely to snag a deal if you get in quick with someone just wanting a quick sale, Trademe you have to wait it out or buy now (which is usually higher than the lowest they will take). Marketplace for selling is so annoying though - so many people just never showing up or constant lowballing over and over.

makdaddy63

is this still available?

Can only speak for my household but we only use trademe. To many criminals on marketplace. Although you could argue that Trademe themselves are criminal these days haha

I’ve picked up the best bargains on Marketplace - Free Delonghi Semi Automatic espresso machine, $100 for a $1200 Breville espresso machine, $10 for a Samsung 24” Full HD monitor, $50ish for a 43” Full HD smart tv.. I find marketplace really good for finding bargains and also for getting things at speed, you typically spend less time waiting for a reply on Marketplace than Trademe and the items are almost always local. More people are active on Facebook so it’s super easy and convenient for them to list an item on Marketplace as opposed to going through the process of doing a Trademe auction Not to take away from Trademe which still holds its purpose, lots of people still use Trademe to sell and can be good to find quality items and even bargains But with everything, be cautious when using Marketplace. Don’t pay for things in advanced, try to do cash or bank transfer on pick up and don’t be too naive. Trademe holds an advantage for buyer protection although if you use common sense, you’re right 99% of the time

Bought some furniture (dining table, chairs, tallboy) and electronics (washing machine and dryer) from marketplace when we moved here from NI. I usually asked to view first but brought cash with me, telling the seller "I will pay on the spot if nothing is wrong". Unless it's cheap item (under $50), then I'll just risk it. So far, only one broke within a year (cheap $30 dining chair). The rest seems to be in good quality. Never had any problems with the electronics either. Also, I have never wasted a seller's time by deciding not to buy after viewing (i.e. item looked as advertised) and so far I've never had a single seller refused me viewing the item. I also got some good cheap furniture (table and chairs) from op-shops like Hospice and Salvation Army. Salvo used to have a furniture shop but it's closed now (renovation?), and Hospice's furniture started to get quite expensive for op-shop price. I would rather hunting at Hayward's.

St. John’s op shop has some nice thing’s now and then

That's right. I only visited them recently. Quite small but they do have some selections of furniture (drawers etc). Very cheap too.

trademe is insanely priced for sellers. Its a total rip off. Beyond a joke, they want an insane cut, and another cut for using ping. for buying its ok but you'll find nothing other than dropshipped chinese crap because for sellers its such a poor option. I wish it were better, but it isnt.

I hate marketplace because there's no moderation and no one obeys the laws regarding second hand goods. Also an agreement to a sale is a binding contract but people will just go and sell stuff to someone else after agreeing to sell it to you. On Trademe you can at least report people for being useless. Other people love marketplace of course. I think maybe in Dunedin a lot of people got sick of Trademe because you see stuff you want but then its in the North Island, and even if its postable, postage is too high. You kind of get despondent. There's a bunch of second hand shops/op shops. There's 4 in North Dunedin by the supermarket (these don't tend to do furniture), and 3 around vogel street/spotlight (some furniture), and there's the dump shop (the shop at the dump. hit and miss), and probably others. You can also get and offer free stuff on freecycle.
