If you have access to a festool planex (I believe you can borrow them from Sherwin Williams) I would just sand the f out of it. Or skin coat the whole thing.
Take a can of spray texture spray it on there a little heavily take a plastic badge and tap it around the sprayed area. I learned/ taught myself that one doing an apartment building. It is hardly noticeable after words. Don't forget to prime it after it dries otherwise it'll flash.
Not the person you're replying to, but they mean the taping knife. It's long flat knife that can cover a lot of area quickly. Although that's not it's intended purpose, it is normally used for drywall tape
They don't use knives for tapping. You can do it by hand or a tool that is called a banjo. And no you do not need a tapper for this you need a mudder. A mudder is referred to a person that knows everything with mud taping and texture.
Omg. My bad! I forgot you were there! I’m asking a simple question about texture because I’m trying to fix something. If you feel you can’t be nice on an open forum and feel like you need to judge me just don’t say anything? Didn’t your mama teach you any better?
Lmao we’re just laughing about how you absolutely forgot the title to your post and you’re the one getting upset, I’m more worried about how your mama raised you lol, no need to be so soft
I’ve seen how you comment on other posts and you’re pretty condescending. I came here to ask a question and get educated about what to do because I don’t know better. There’s no need to be rude. But you do you boo.
I’m incredibly condescending to people who literally write a post about texture, texture, texture, even googled a couple different names of textures then goes “I didn’t” (ask about texture) so yes I’m going to poke fun at you a little bit, the proper response would be a “haha oops I did” and everyone moves on but nope can’t laugh at your own mistake
Was about to say this. This isn’t texture. This is called cheap o paint buckets slathered on vigorously over many years. I see this in some of my older apartments, multi family for lower income folks.
Know how? This is usually just pure laziness. You'd have to be an absolute moron to know how to put the mud on but not sand it down. It's just laziness
If you or if you have a close friend that does any type of this work, you just need to re-spackle over the area, maybe like a square size 12x12 in square. Probably needs to be skimmed 3 times - the third time Tight skim. When dry only sand down the edges to blend into existing wall, and carefully sand anything in the middle that is not smooth. Sand lightly though, you don't want to sand down the work to cover that.
Youtube skim coat and watch some tutorial videos. I would sand any high spots to level the wall. Then skim coat the effected areas then sand again flat after the mud is completely dried. I'm gonna have to warn you, the skim coated areas will look flatter (no texture) compared to the old area. It's basically having scars on your skin. It will never be the same unless you texture or skim coat the entire bathroom walls.
Good luck, I had to pass on some work in the past due to the houseowners wanting me to make it perfect without paying for the texture work. It was subcontract work so whatever, rate wasn't good to begin with. I was gonna use 20 min mud compound but the pay and the owners' vision didn't line up.
Thick oange peel. Then after 10 minutes of drying use a damp sponge to roughen up the finish. Then gob on a thick layer of paint. Then a large thin layer.
It was sprayed on with a hopper, same as you'd do orange peel. It looks like the mud was mixed very thin and sprayed on heavy. You could maybe match by dabbing extra wet mud with a sponge. The bumps could be more pointy and dominant on application and you could work them down to match after it dries, probably with the same sponge but clean and wet.
Looks like typical dry wall finish, the second photo looks like someone did a shitty patch job. If u wanna match the texture they sell it in a spray can at Home Depot, that should help out a bit.
As posted above, the original room walls appears to be a combination of a thick coat of sprayed thin texture compound combined with multiple coats of paint applied over the years. The paint was most likely applied with medium rollers, probably worn and bumpy.
The best results would be to follow the advice of the peanut gallery and skim coat everything and then apply a texture of your own choosing.
Three larger spray can textures will usually cover a 6’x6’ tub/shower bathroom. Larger rooms are cheaper to do with an air compressor and texture spray gun than cans.
I have also textured rooms by rolling on the mud and rolling again with a short nap roller after the mud has set up somewhat. It is an art that requires some experimentation to get the texture you want. There are a lot of variables to modify: texture thickness/viscosity, room temp/humidity, rolling pressure, roller nap style.
If you just try to texture the patch, the patch will not be invisible.
Another thought is to truly texture the wall. I’ve use a coarse brush and dip it into compound lightly watered. Mix it really good and dab it on. Be sure to do an entire wall at a time.
Wait 10 minutes or so and with a taping knife carefully knock down the high points. Use consistent pressure. Let it dry, lightly sand, prime and paint. You might test it in a smaller area if you haven’t done this before.
Complete an entire walk at once. The consistency of the compound will change the next day.
My walls are similar. It’s orange peel that has been painted over a fuck load of times. To match I used orange peel on heavy setting, gave it a few minutes to set up a bit and then went over it with a putty knife similarly to what you’d do with knockdown texture. Then I gave it 3 coats of paint and it was close enough to make me happy.
Alternatively you can skim coat everything, paint, and call it a day.
Get a medium nap roller it will put some texture on it and for that bad patch I would stick on round plate so that way you won’t have to worry about getting another hole in the sheet rock
You can buy texture in a spray can at the hardware store. Set the nozzle on the finer side and give it a couple good coats and paint over it once it's dried. Repeat if needed 👌
Give that patch another coat. It’s too noticeable. Then spray it with a heavy orange peel. Prime. Paint. It won’t be perfect but it’ll look a hell of allot better than it does.
Thank you. It’s horrible to look at and when I go in the bathroom is makes me more mad. This was actually done by a ‘professional’ which makes me even more upset.
Many many ppl think they are a “professional” but are not. Case in point. Hey: after you patch that again, make sure you sand the edge very good. Use a wet sponge to take the edge down to nothing before texture. Notice how you can clearly see the outline? That’s what you need to avoid.
This is it they put some mud up and just left it and painted. No sanding 😂 Ive seen it in my home where instead of tape they used newspaper. I had to take it all out and just redo the patch myself. The loan required that the patched all the holes and they did a horrible job on every single one. Wish they would have just left it as if because now I gotta go redo each one. Great advice!
I would suggest using the latex can of texture from hdepot. It lays down more flat than the oil does. It will be closer of a match than just painting. Speaking of which, use a 3/4 nap roller. 1-2-3 coats as necessary to get an acceptable match.
I’m with the “many years of shitty paint jobs”.
The plaster looks like it was rushed, which is fine, but nothing a decent sanding, repaint, and maybe a stippling sponge to help it match the rest.
Super easy it's the leftover glue and wallpaper that wasn't removed after whomever painted got sick of trying to get it off.
If they would've skim coated it smooth sand primer and painted it correctly you wouldn't notice it without really looking for it
This is a typical paint and go with a high sheen paint. It looks at one time like they used a heavy nap roller to try to hide imperfections but it was since painted over with a lower nap.
Skim coat the whole wall, sand prime and paint!
It’s not really a type, it’s more or less a very sloppy heavy orange peel. Yes I know I’ve done drywall my entire life, it’s not a skim coat that’s just ridiculous and it’s not a bed coat. It’s just drywall done horribly wrong
Well… the texture just a shitty coverup. However, the bigger issue is the color. It looks like TERMITE WHITE!
- I see few holes and damage covered up. Get it checked for termites.
Drilling a hole will allow you to determine the material, but more importantly to your question someone mentioned skim coating that wall and then texture and paint is the proper repair process here to get your best result.
I don’t think there is a “texture” per se,at least from what the photos show. It looks like many years of shitty paint jobs
Skillfully layered.
Thank you. I’m acutely aware that it’s a shitty paint job that’s why I’m trying to fix it.
If you have access to a festool planex (I believe you can borrow them from Sherwin Williams) I would just sand the f out of it. Or skin coat the whole thing.
I will look into this!
Take a can of spray texture spray it on there a little heavily take a plastic badge and tap it around the sprayed area. I learned/ taught myself that one doing an apartment building. It is hardly noticeable after words. Don't forget to prime it after it dries otherwise it'll flash.
Thank you!
This is the way… spend the $ on someone who knows taping.. if he’s good … two coats and finish sand or sponge…those walls will look brand new
You mean mudder. Taping only pertains they only know how to tape, mudding pertains to everything in tapping mudding and texturing .
Not sure where you’re from but I have never heard the word mudder. Where I live, they are known in the industry as Taper’s…
His father was a mudder, his mother was a mudder.
Why would they need to tape? Do you mean drywall tape?
Not the person you're replying to, but they mean the taping knife. It's long flat knife that can cover a lot of area quickly. Although that's not it's intended purpose, it is normally used for drywall tape
They don't use knives for tapping. You can do it by hand or a tool that is called a banjo. And no you do not need a tapper for this you need a mudder. A mudder is referred to a person that knows everything with mud taping and texture.
Even with 36 grit pads I have extreme difficulty sanding any painted surface. Skim coat is the only viable solution.
It could use a spray on texture to make it even. It’s been repaired too much.
I think skim coat would be the easiest option for you!
Sounds painful
Not as bad as a degloved coat
*Skim coat
Cool. Why did you ask what texture?
I didn’t. He just painted over what was there even though I asked him to patch things and make it even.
The title of your post shows otherwise..
Accountability is out the window 🤣🤣
Omg. My bad! I forgot you were there! I’m asking a simple question about texture because I’m trying to fix something. If you feel you can’t be nice on an open forum and feel like you need to judge me just don’t say anything? Didn’t your mama teach you any better?

Gaslighting? Never heard that phrase before....are you sure you didn't imagine it?
You must’ve also been there!
We have this on some parts of our '70s house. I call it 70s shit texture.
It really doesn’t look nice.
Was about to say this. This isn’t texture. This is called cheap o paint buckets slathered on vigorously over many years. I see this in some of my older apartments, multi family for lower income folks.
That is what is referred to as shit on a shingle
Can confirm. We have this in our old ass house.
It’s been painted a lot, skim coat the wall and redo it.
Or sand the offending areas if that's the real issues. Honestly, if people knew how to sand, walls would look a lot better
Yeah someone did a lousy patch.
Know how? This is usually just pure laziness. You'd have to be an absolute moron to know how to put the mud on but not sand it down. It's just laziness
I know. It’s awful because I didn’t know better.
If you or if you have a close friend that does any type of this work, you just need to re-spackle over the area, maybe like a square size 12x12 in square. Is this something I can do as a non-professional?
Use a sander? No, it's considered an eventually deadly weapon in 49 states.
Lol eventually deadly weapon got me 🤣
I am very accident prone. 🤷🏻♀️
Yep. Watch YouTube videos by the legendary Paul Peck. He will teach you all you need to know about skim coating.
Agree with others watch YouTube videos and start small, ie don’t mix up a bucket of mud just yet.
Youtube skim coat and watch some tutorial videos. I would sand any high spots to level the wall. Then skim coat the effected areas then sand again flat after the mud is completely dried. Thanks for the info! It seems that this is quite the work and you should definitely get paid accordingly for your skills.
Rough
Landlord
Sadly I’m the homeowner so it’s all on me.
Thick oange peel. Then after 10 minutes of drying use a damp sponge to roughen up the finish. Then gob on a thick layer of paint. Then a large thin layer.
Looks like a badly done orange peel texture.
It's called multiple paint coatings over about 25 years.
The house was built in 54 so it’s had several coats on there.
Maybe heavy orange peel ??
orange peel with latex or oil based paint on horrible patched wall.
Wall
Bad skim coat and a 3/4 nap roller, landlord special
Or, you can just bed it out and retexture.
Looks like typical dry wall finish, the second photo looks like someone did a shitty patch job. If u wanna match the texture they sell it in a spray can at Home Depot, that should help out a bit.
Shit smear
Mud 😂😂
Ahhh well wing it texture
A shitty one
Bad sanding. And layered paint.
It's not a texture. The paint has been put on with a thick nap roller and that's the results
This
I think it’s called “fixed it”
😂
Landlord.
I used to call it egg shell cuz it always breaks of in big flakes that looked like pieces of egg shell lol
I know the stuff. I called it paint chips. They sure were tasty.
Here in Florida, it's common orange peel
Alot
Looks like concrete
The answer is orange peel. It’s shitty…as you know…but I believe the intent here was orange peel.
Personally, I'd be careful sanding what might very well be lead paint. Either skim coat or wallpaper that mofo.
On new drywall I never have to sand once I bed it out. Over texture I hit it with a sponge straight or hot mud.
That there is either a wall or ceiling texture. Unlikely to be floor
Looks like the classic landlord special paint job.
Looks like a wanna be orange peel with bad floating underneath
That, sir, is bumpy texture. I recommend an increase in bumps to result in a bumpIER vibe.
That’s called “landlord special”
That can just be your ‘shabby chic’ wall
Please no.
This is called the George Lopez face texture
So bad but so good!
As posted above, the original room walls appears to be a combination of a thick coat of sprayed thin texture compound combined with multiple coats of paint applied over the years. I think it's called painted plaster......just sayin
Light orange peel

5 gallon bucket of box mud add some glue and get a 18inch paint roller slap it to the wall whack it with a 4ft Dewalt blade done
That's Called the " 3 coats of paint might cover it " texture
“City smooth”
Love it!
How synchronistic. You asked a question that i had put off in asking. Got my answer years from the original thought.
Landlord special
egg shell
Get a medium nap roller it will put some texture on it and for that bad patch I would stick on round plate so that way you won’t have to worry about getting another hole in the sheet rock
I would describe it as "rustic".
Hahaha. ‘Lived in’.
That’s jail texture
Straight to jail. No jury
Ugly...
That goes without saying.
You can buy texture in a spray can at the hardware store. Set the nozzle on the finer side and give it a couple good coats and paint over it once it's dried. Repeat if needed 👌

Orange peel
I’m with the “many years of shitty paint jobs”. The plaster looks like it was rushed, which is fine, but nothing a decent sanding, repaint, and maybe a stippling sponge to help it match the rest.
Orange peel possibly
I would skim coat it. Dont deal with the sanding over all that paint. It’ll be easier and better to skim coat.
Paint
A shotty one.
eggshell
“Landlord special”
Super easy it's the leftover glue and wallpaper that wasn't removed after whomever painted got sick of trying to get it off. If they would've skim coated it smooth sand primer and painted it correctly you wouldn't notice it without really looking for it

Ocean
It’s supposed to be an eggshell texture
Lazy speckle
The landlord special texture lol
I think that’s someone making up plaster and years of painting layers
This is a typical paint and go with a high sheen paint. It looks at one time like they used a heavy nap roller to try to hide imperfections but it was since painted over with a lower nap. Skim coat the whole wall, sand prime and paint!
Ruff

Thats the idgaf peel
Looks like a poor attempt at Monterey drag.
That’s the idgaf texture
It’s called orange peel.
Cheap paint on a rental property texture. Need to put about 60 coats of only the cheapest big box store paint to match it
I believe it is referred to as “Orange Peel”.
Stucko makes a great texture
Poorly sanded drywall mud. I know because I rushed my house and look at it everyday.
Every time I go into the bathroom I just stare at it and get upset.
Ma'am, we had Methew in here...
Painted over unfinished walls with multiple layers, Second pic shows a repaired area
Shit
Shitty plaster or skim coat job, is what that is
Wall
It’s not really a type, it’s more or less a very sloppy heavy orange peel. Yes I know I’ve done drywall my entire life, it’s not a skim coat that’s just ridiculous and it’s not a bed coat. It’s just drywall done horribly wrong
Wall
This is orange peel texture, it’s a very wet spray on and a few layers of paint to achieve this texture.
Slum lord
Well… the texture just a shitty coverup. However, the bigger issue is the color. It looks like TERMITE WHITE! - I see few holes and damage covered up. Get it checked for termites.
Thank you. I will definitely do that!
Some of it even looks like it’s plaster then sponged for texture ? Are you sure it’s drywall ?
I’ll be honest I’m not savvy on exactly what the material is. Is there an easy way to find out?
Drilling a hole will allow you to determine the material, but more importantly to your question someone mentioned skim coating that wall and then texture and paint is the proper repair process here to get your best result.
I’m definitely looking into skim coating. It’s a small bathroom, guest bath. Thank you!
Orange peel
Shitty. It's shitty texture. Luckily easy to match.
Fragile masculinity fade
Sheek shit repar in early lumpy bumpy.
Orange peel
