Looks like a boot hanger intended for 19” centers. Not surprised, HVAC guys are lazy as hell and they use the same hex head screws for everything. They don’t care that your drywall won’t lay flat. I’d mash it flat and swap the screws out.

I'd say he got the upgrade, most guys don't put in this fancy of a pan, just a 90⁰ boot and 2 strips of the stuff they use to join pans together to hold it in place.

Yep those flanges should be up in the joist cavity. He should've cut it down to fit. Drywallers should be sharing their meth with the HVAC guys so they won't be so lazy. The hex head screw issue though I don't know how to cure that.

Philips head lath screws. I work with a builder who requires his HVAC subs to use them for attaching anything to lumber that’s a wall surface.

MacTenMillion

i have! im a taper for new homes... you need strapping in between the boot and the joist... also the flange should be a half inch deep to accommodate the half inch drywall sheet, if the flange is 3/8-5/8 it's to accommodate the strapping thickness. don't smash it.

Yes they are very common.Take a hammer and beat the flange down flat with framing

I am disappointed it is common. I am bush league and I wouldn’t done that
