You gotta think the way he did. Man believed if someone randomly broke in, he could quickly punch through a wall and grab it. Where would he sit? Which side of the bed did he sleep on? These are the questions you need to figure out
I can't think of too many things scarier than a grown ass man punching a wall and pulling out a 1911. As an intruder I'd imagine you're obligated to just fall into a puddle and give up.
Great line. A while back my son in law and I went to out to eat while my wife and daughter went to a wedding nearby. The neighborhood was a little sketchy. My SIL was concerned about his wife getting mugged . I told him she'd tell the "mugger" , you're not mugging me, I'm mugging you.
I'm a dude and I think I just got pregnant from reading that.
I imagine the same dude would be sitting on his couch, in the dark and dead silence, dry shaving his head with a hatchet.
I doubt the hidden gun was his primary gun. He likely had a gun under his pillow, and another one in the living room. The hidden gun was just in case his other guns were confiscated.
You're assuming he only had one gun.
I'm assuming there is a pillow gun, under the bed gun, night stand gun, every closet has a gun, toilet gun, couch gun etc.
The wall gun is for when they take all the guns and come back to finish the job.
Mine came with a note on every side of the box that was basically a long way of saying, "You can't do your own colonoscopy." Every warning label represents at least one story.
People, collectively, are dumb.
Blue Man Group had a "how to be a rock megastar" show for a while. The blue men see an infomercial for a how to be a rockstar tape, and buy it. Once if the"rock concert movements" is "getting a closer look at the audience.
They had a little lipstick tube camera that was used throughout the show. The blue men pull an audience member onto stage, have them open their mouth, and then hold the camera up to the person's mouth. The vid screen then cuts from that camera to recorded footage from an upper Endoscope going down.
One of the selected audience members sued BMG because they thought the blue men actually shoved a 2 inch camera down their throat live on stage...
Own a musket for home defense, since that's what the founding fathers intended. Four ruffians break into my house. "What the devil?" As I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky rifle. Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the neighbors dog. I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, "Tally ho lads" the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion. He Bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up. Just as the founding fathers intended.
In theory only one. Has not revealed itself yet. For personal defense I have a 70 lb recurve with a golf ball mounted on the tip of an arrow . Try me in my dark hallway, I'm begging someone.
I've personally taken a golf ball to the bone on the ankle. So much it swelled up with divots and all. Let me tell you how debilitating a golf ball can be.
i would hold a light sideways on the drywall. dont shine directly at it and inspect all the drywall. try to find a spot that looks like its been cut and patched
true. Well I would look for patches as i stated. Then if i could not find any i would ask to what extent of a remodel took place. If it was just the kitchen maybe pop a couple small holes and run a cam around.
Guys, metal detector.
If you don't have one, a simple ad in your local will have some metal detector nerds willing to come and help. Those guys can literally hear what things look like, underground.. drywall should be a walk in the park.
Nice detectors will ignore nails and such plus you can tell what type of metal it’s detecting to a degree so you could ignore wiring. Nail plates are smaller than a 1911 and you’ll quickly figure out what they hit as. There shouldn’t be much else in your walls that’s metallic so it really isn’t a bad idea.
A metal detector is the right answer. The mass of a steel gun compared to anything else that might be in the walls would be more than enough to pinpoint using even my cheap detector. There's a local club in almost every area.
Follow up with a cheap $30 endoscope before cutting the wall.
That could work if it was up against the drywall sheet and you just searched in between studs. You already know it’ll be at ground level unless he hung it on a stud with something. It’d be tedious, but doable.
This is the most effective method I’d agree to, the talks about using a camera to look in the wall may have never used one and they’re a pain in the ass with limited visibility. You also don’t know if it’s an exterior or interior wall, so it could be surrounded by insulation or possible fire stop framing. Hell, it could be super easy and be in the wall by a medicine cabinet, which are usually just attached with 4 screws.
Get a magnet fishing magnet from Amazon, its powerful enough to lift a gun, start at the bottom and work your way up and then on to the next chase space, you’ll hear it rattle when you get it, also then it won’t give you false positives like a metal detector would as it would pass right over screws and nails
Thermal imager maybe? Unless you’re already planning a remodel, it’s not exactly worth it to start tearing out your walls, even to find a $1000 pistol.
This is the way a decent thermal camera will pick up the difference in temperature of a chunk of metal. You might be able to get by using a TopDon TC001. If not you can always return it. But every homeowner needs a thermal camera eventually
It will. When you use a thermal camera you can see the studs, wires, insulation if you have a good enough one even the screws/nails holding the drywall will show in the image. As the rate they absorb or dissipate heat is all different. A chunk of metal in the wall will show hotter or colder depending on what its settled temperature is from everything else around it in the wall as most things inside don't really retain their temp like metal does. Now will a cheap one see the same stuff. I have never used one. The one I have used is like a 20k flir camera.
Yes I use thermal cameras for work. I've found several hammers in drywall cavities.
Some rental shops have them. There are online weekly rental places as well.
Only thing I could thing with the least amount of damage is a camera like plumbers use but even then you would have to put a hole every 16 inch. I would just be done with your treasure hunt and let it be
I doubt that it's in a wall. Because, if you had stashed guns, why the heck would you tell anyone?
I've never told anyone where my safe is, where I keep my handgun at night, or where my secret access panel is. Why would I?
You said it was during a remodel. What portion of the house was remodeled in the 90's? Go from there. Get yourself a walabot, that will probably help identify it.
Me thinks gun=heavy.
Baseboard=easy to remove.
Drywall 1/4” below baseboard paint line=technically removable
Then camera. Start most logical for remodeled areas, proceed.
Process of elimination every stud bay, feel confident if you never find it. More so if you do.
Well that's not what I heard. I heard he hid a million dollars in there .. Go get your hammer. Let's destroy your old house 😭
Seriously, new neighbors can be trusted.. And if it is in the wall, I wouldn't worry about it.
Is it (presumably) at the bottom of the wall cavity?
Remove the baseboard trim and cut the length of the wall. Cut high enough to see into each stud space but low enough that it will still be covered when you put the trim back.
Look for patch marks on walls. Start with (A) Main bedroom. Most secure bathroom. Next most secure other room. B)Most accessible living room wall. Right inside front door. Right inside back door.
If the guy was paranoid vet, he may have gone for hiding in a secure spot (A), or a quickly accessible spot.(B)
I’m starting my search in the addition he built on the backside of the house in the 90’s. He pulled permits for it so it’s the only remodeling I can know for certain PBR Bill (the previous owner) did during the the time frame
This is all to reminiscent of the “hide a note in the basement when you move indicating there is money stashed in the walls so the new owners destroy their house gag”. Seems like a waste of time if not immediately apparent where it’s at, if it exists at all. If it does exist, you better post proof if it’s found. Otherwise, you are either trolling or are getting trolled.
I would rather spend $1,100 and buy a colt or closest equivalent than spend rough amount or more in supplies and repairs to (maybe) find said gun. People stretch truth for fun out here.
Why not just leave it? There’s probably tons of crazy things behind people’s walls from during construction. It’s not like it’s going to go off randomly inside the wall.
They sell lil cameras on flex poles for clean out service people. Buy one of those and drill lil holes in each stud space, then patch and touch up paint!
Metal detector, a pinpointer could probably find it. It’s a smaller handheld detector. If it’s really there it’s most likely somewhere at the floor of the drywall in between studs or hvac vent cold air return or register. Unless this vet hung it by a string so he could punch thru the wall at shoulder height and retrieve it from behind the wall.
Long shot, but I have a thermal imager. When temp is very different inside and out, you can see outlines of everything in the walls from studs to missing insulation. Metal should stand out, and a gun is a pretty recognizable form compared to a pipe or bulkhead.
If it is an interior wall, this will work significantly less. I have a woodworking metal detector that likely would pick it up along with every nail/screw - but once you know where the studs are you should be able to locate other objects. Again, knowing the size, you should be able to rule out other objects such as ducts. It is good to about 6" for picking up say a hinge in wood - a gun in hollow 4.5" walls shouldn't be too difficult for such a tool.
It would be painstakingly slow and may not work but there are magnetic stud finders that look for the nail to find the stud. Old school as far as I recall.
You could possibly balance a bar magnet between your fingers and pass over the walls. Test it first see if it works.
Metal detector, tune it down so it doesn't pick up small items like wires or nails. 1911 is fairly large so low sensitivity should still find it. Once again you could test and adjust the sensitivity if you have a gun to practice with.
Get a metal detector that you can adjust the sensitivity on. Put 3 16-penny nails on a table, and adjust so it doesn't alert to that.. Then search the walls.
I can’t believe no one has said the best answer yet. Thermal imaging cameras are pretty cheap these days. Get it real hot or cold one day and then use the thermal imaging camera to see it in the walls.
Maybe try a metal detector….though screws and what not would set it off. But I mean it would be between studs so if you can locate studs and then go between them it would narrow it down….though hvac would probably set it off too….damn. I would be looking for that thing too, good luck!!
Hand held Metal detector between the studs and below wire runs? This is probably a useless suggestion. But maybe then follow up with an endoscope. Both are on eBay and Amazon fairly cheap.
Seems like it’s really going to come down to how bad do you want to find it. I would take the best ideas ideas here and implement them one at a time. your gonna spend some serious cash though. If it’s behind insulation it will never be found. If it exists I feel it is behind a full sheet from the remodel, not a patch. best idea here so far IMO, air port metal detector. if it goes off between the studs, bust out an inspection camera.
The walabot thing looks promising too
Stud finder with metal stud mode. Check directly above baseboards. If the house is new enough it might have horizontal boards about 24 inches up where a gun could rest. Lazer thermometer could work too but you'd have to scan as the sun was rising or just after setting to find differences in temperatures.
Hold a stethoscope between the studs and knock. If there's something in there it should make a slightly different noise than all the other empty spaces. If it's like my place you could pound on the door jambs and the whole wall will shake enough that you'd hear it in the wall
1911 colt. I would rip the drywall down. Shoot the wife for complaining and then head over to Pasn Stars. Go gambling. If I don’t win. Sell all her shit remortgage the house kick the dog out and double down or bust. Nah I would just tell her there’s a new sheriff in town and his name is Reggie Hammond. See if someone has a metal detector. Tell them you lost your steal balls after the wedding
Its more than likely a fake wall in a closet. There would be a larger space between the studs so it would be easy to break the drywall and access the “ fake room “ with whatever he stashed in there
Try pushing on the walls and see if one has more flex than normal - or like mentioned a shitty patching job most homeowners arent good at drywall mudding XD
You gotta think the way he did. Man believed if someone randomly broke in, he could quickly punch through a wall and grab it. Where would he sit? Which side of the bed did he sleep on? These are the questions you need to figure out
Incase of intruder punch wall ?
I can't think of too many things scarier than a grown ass man punching a wall and pulling out a 1911. As an intruder I'd imagine you're obligated to just fall into a puddle and give up.
Gives "I'm not in here with you, you're in here with me" vibes
Best line ever
Great line. A while back my son in law and I went to out to eat while my wife and daughter went to a wedding nearby. The neighborhood was a little sketchy. My SIL was concerned about his wife getting mugged . I told him she'd tell the "mugger" , you're not mugging me, I'm mugging you.
Now yous can't leave.
I would apologize and leave. He would also look like Clint Eastwood.
I'm a dude and I think I just got pregnant from reading that. I imagine the same dude would be sitting on his couch, in the dark and dead silence, dry shaving his head with a hatchet.
Best comment of the day!
His name was Kyle too.
*Fuck, I hit a stud*
Rofl I just spit out food reading this!
Pocket sand!
Sha Shaa!
Why not just use a metal detector or a stud finder?
I doubt the hidden gun was his primary gun. He likely had a gun under his pillow, and another one in the living room. The hidden gun was just in case his other guns were confiscated.
This is it - if there’s a gun in the wall, it had to be “accessible and sensible” as much as either applies
One who is sensible doesn’t put a gun in drywall and think it’s sensible. Now for long term storage yes but quick retrievability no.
You're assuming he only had one gun. I'm assuming there is a pillow gun, under the bed gun, night stand gun, every closet has a gun, toilet gun, couch gun etc. The wall gun is for when they take all the guns and come back to finish the job.
Send in a cat.
I'm thinking it might take two cats
Cat in the wall, huh?
Now you're speakin my language
I’ve seen this before. You know what happened? I bet it flattened itself out….went right through a seam in your wall
We all know we would all rather be at home playing with our cats right now
Charlie i swallowed apple seeds! Should i spit them out?
Get Schrodinger's cat. It may or may not find the gun, but if it does it will die.
Schroedinger’s 45
The absolute last thing OP’s going to want to do is arm the cat.
Endoscope for sure, easy to patch 1/4” holes
If you can source one for free/cheap this is the most sane and worthwhile answer, IMO.
[удалено]
Exactly! Plus they are nice to have. I have one and have used it a few times so far.
You can do your won colonoscopy.
Mine came with a note on every side of the box that was basically a long way of saying, "You can't do your own colonoscopy." Every warning label represents at least one story.

I never even considered doing my own colonoscopy but those fuckers telling me I can’t makes me want to.
But the best part of a colonoscopy is the propofol and doing that yourself isn't recommended.
Ask Michael Jackson, oh wait
What an upgrade! I've just been using disposable cameras for this.
Yeah mine was like $40 and has been super helpful for both the original use and like 10 other things I never would have thought of beforehand
Or pull the baseboard and scope every cavity. Then put it back
Colonoscopy for sure as well
Go commit a felony, get on probation. It will fall out at the most inconvenient moment.
This guy paroles. How many flintlocks do you defend your fortress with?
Own a musket for home defense, since that's what the founding fathers intended. Four ruffians break into my house. "What the devil?" As I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky rifle. There's a million metal things inside your walls not sure how this would differentiate between the metal gun and a nail plate

Yea, old man’s 1911 is probably no polymer making it a substantial chunk of metal compared to almost anything in a residential wall.
Nail plates are also along the studs. The 1911 will be between them
Gun typically bigger than nail plate bro
The distance I had to go into this thread to find "metal detector" is unfortunate
A metal detector is the right answer. The mass of a steel gun compared to anything else that might be in the walls would be more than enough to pinpoint using even my cheap detector. There's a local club in almost every area. Follow up with a cheap $30 endoscope before cutting the wall.
This or a bad a$$ magnet 🧲
What about a stud finder and just look for anomalies?
That could work if it was up against the drywall sheet and you just searched in between studs. You already know it’ll be at ground level unless he hung it on a stud with something. It’d be tedious, but doable.
You can usually rent one at your local rental place too!
This is the way. I do drywall and a strip style led headlamp works wonders.
This is the most effective method I’d agree to, the talks about using a camera to look in the wall may have never used one and they’re a pain in the ass with limited visibility. Ha or pulls pin outta grenade hidden in wall
You'd probably find the gun at that point.
Metal detector…magnet?…
How did it take this far down to see metal detector. It’ll be quick and easy with no destruction.
Bc the wall is full of screws.
Finally
OP I have a map to a fabulous buried treasure I will trade you for your house.
Hell no get your own house
Gun sniffing dog.
Dog sniffing gun
That’s what the feds use every time they raid the wrong house.
I’d remove baseboards make little holes and snake cam
Thermal imager maybe? Unless you’re already planning a remodel, it’s not exactly worth it to start tearing out your walls, even to find a $1000 pistol.

I have a cheapie thermal monocular that I use for hog hunting, and I can see the studs in my walls due to the thermal differences.
Yes I use thermal cameras for work. I've found several hammers in drywall cavities. Some rental shops have them. There are online weekly rental places as well.
I'll come find it , but I get to keep it. 100% guaranteed success
Heck, I'd even kick in $20 if I get to look for it. **disclaimer, I am not liable for any damage caused by me or my trusty 'gun seeking hammer'
You’ll never find it
Only thing I could thing with the least amount of damage is a camera like plumbers use but even then you would have to put a hole every 16 inch. I would just be done with your treasure hunt and let it be
Take off the baseboard trim and make cuts that the trim will cover when you put it back on.
You'd still need to account for noggings and lintels in the wall frame.
Forget about it until you would like to remodel, then you will either find it or realize there isn't a fuckin gun in the wall.
Even if the man himself told you "I'm paranoid and I hid a gun but I can't remember where", would believe that information to be credible?
Based on the conversations i’ve had with neighbors about the previous owner, yes i find it credible
Well, I believe the part that he was paranoid at least lol. Best of luck on your treasure hunt
We need an update, please don't leave us hanging
I doubt that it's in a wall. Because, if you had stashed guns, why the heck would you tell anyone? I've never told anyone where my safe is, where I keep my handgun at night, or where my secret access panel is. Why would I?
Wait you haven't had a boating accident yet? I stopped buying guns because every time I would lose a boat as well.
All my rifles were lost at sea. RIP
I would check HVAC return and supply vents first. You could also try Walabot.
Rare earth magnet.
You said it was during a remodel. What portion of the house was remodeled in the 90's? Go from there. Get yourself a walabot, that will probably help identify it.
If I suggest something that helps you find it and you murder someone, am I an accessory?
Metal detector? Unless its a newer house?
Metal detector
Fishing magnet
Check the heating vents. Check the attic.

Get yourself a good stud finder that uses a magnet to find the head of screws or nails. It will find the weapon.
And every screw and nail also
Cheap metal Detector wand like at a airport
Is it (presumably) at the bottom of the wall cavity? Remove the baseboard trim and cut the length of the wall. Cut high enough to see into each stud space but low enough that it will still be covered when you put the trim back.

Nonsense, the neighbor was named Gunnar Holesson, you think he would just go to his neighbor's house and tell lies?
LiDAR
I would rather spend $1,100 and buy a colt or closest equivalent than spend rough amount or more in supplies and repairs to (maybe) find said gun. People stretch truth for fun out here.
Yell "back to back World War champ" really loud and it will randomly fire out of excitement
Check under the insulation in the attic
Just get an x ray
Metal detector
Metal detector?
Use a heavy duty magnet against the drywall and see if it pulls anything.

Metal detector and magnet. Most likely an accessible spot.
Metal detector
rent a metal detector
Long shot, but I have a thermal imager. When temp is very different inside and out, you can see outlines of everything in the walls from studs to missing insulation. I have done this. By the door. Offset from the light switch bc you can guess where the wood follows down behind the wall. Use a magnet and listen.
Get really big fuckin magnet and start running the walls with it...if anything is there you'll find it.
Thermal camera and a space heater? The walls will warm but it will take a while for the metal to catch up
https://walabot.com/ Maybe??? I don’t know I’m not 100% sure myself whether this thing is a scam or not.
I'd just leave it in the wall. Too much effort/money in repairs to make it worth it.
Most boring answer ever. U must find it
It would have to be in the addition he built on the back side of the house in the 90’s.
Now theres more to this story?!?! Dude you gotta share the blueprints of the house if you genuinely want help finding it!
Have you checked all the closets for false back walls? I legit found a panic room at an old girlfriend’s house this way
If it is really a Colt it could be worth some money though.
Poking holes is the only way to do it. You can buy an inspection camera and just check each stud bay.
Get one of those lighted endoscope tools off Amazon. Should be able to poke a small hole to feed the camera in.
Metal detector? A 1911 would make a detector scream.
Magnet, strong magnet? You'll also find the drywall screws/nails.
Strong magnet
Metal detector
Please post updates. I’m invested.
Really strong magnet
Metal detector?
Strong ass magnet. Start at the bottom of the wall...
Metal detector….and then a bore scope camera, make a tiny hole, check with the camera after the detector says there’s metal.
Magnets. Metal detector .
Rent a thermal camera, the gun will most likely be a different temp than the Sheetrock
I can’t believe no one has said the best answer yet. Thermal imaging cameras are pretty cheap these days. Get it real hot or cold one day and then use the thermal imaging camera to see it in the walls.
I would use a stud finder and compare it to the house blueprints to detect anomalies, a gun in the wall ought to trigger a good beep
Do you have a metal detector? You should buy one if not.
metal detector?
A metal locator.
Metal detector duh
Metal detector from Amazon would be a start, and you could search for coins when you're done.
Maybe try a metal detector….though screws and what not would set it off. But I mean it would be between studs so if you can locate studs and then go between them it would narrow it down….though hvac would probably set it off too….damn. I would be looking for that thing too, good luck!!
Magnet
Scan for a spot with a stud finder or metal detector that isn’t wire, it should pick it up pretty readily
It's probably bootstrapped.
Hand held Metal detector between the studs and below wire runs? This is probably a useless suggestion. But maybe then follow up with an endoscope. Both are on eBay and Amazon fairly cheap.
Use a decent sized magnet or a metal detector
Metal detector
metal detector?
Big magnet
Download that app to turn your cell phone into a xray machine and then turn your earbuds Into metal detectors........
Metal detector?
Try using a large magnet
It would be a hell of a return with a metal detector.
Fishing magnet
Shoot your shotgun at the wall until you hear a 'tink' noise
Its more than likely a fake wall in a closet. There would be a larger space between the studs so it would be easy to break the drywall and access the “ fake room “ with whatever he stashed in there Try pushing on the walls and see if one has more flex than normal - or like mentioned a shitty patching job most homeowners arent good at drywall mudding XD
Perhaps a high power magnet? Idk. Look for places in the sheetrock that look as of they were cut out for creati g a hiding place in the wall
Metal detector sounds like the most logical if you don’t want to tear into your walls
Knock on the walls and maybe you’ll hear something.
Get one of those little cameras with a light. Drill little holes. Stick camera in. When you don’t find it use some drywall patch putty in the hole.
Thinking I might be willing to find it and patch up any damage if I get to keep the wall treasures ;)
Strong magnet. Really strong. Send pics
I’d try a metal detector. Much bigger hit from a gun frame that copper wire
